I have no idea how the staging PPA fixes this, but can confirm the
latest unity+compiz updates have fixed it too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-09-04 Thread Michal Bližňák
I've installed 304.43 on my Ubuntu 12.04 (Gnome-Shell) with Nvidia 8800
GT and experienced no crashes for whole week so it looks like this bug
is really fixed in this driver release.

Although, between this bug being a problem and it apparently being
resolved, compiz 0.9.8.0 was released to quantal. That includes the GLES
work which is a very large change. Maybe that did the trick and is
working around the original problem in Mesa.

I have exactly the same problem (screen freezes for a second or two,
then goes black, then the lightdm login screen appears and I have to log
into a new session. Happens at apparently random times, several times a
day, generally when doing very light tasks) but I have intel graphics

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045719] [NEW] Display port monitor detected, but no signal sent

2012-09-04 Thread Stéphane Glondu
Public bug reported:

I have two monitors: one connected via VGA, and one connected via
DisplayPort. When the X server starts, there is a signal on both
monitors. But when the monitor on DisplayPort is switched off, then back
on, the monitor no longer detects signal. However, the monitor is
detected: dm and GNOME react to the new monitor and it appears in xrandr
output.

The signal comes back after restarting the X server. This makes me think
it is a software problem, or at least it could be solved in software.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1037483] Re: Needs NVIDIA driver 304.43

2012-09-04 Thread Flames_in_Paradise
re: nvida-settings-updates (Precise)

Well, yes, thanks. It's slowly climbing up in the unapproved queue
to the approved queue. Hopefully soon. All devs seem to be pretty busy
on the Quetzal

Will be happy when it arrives in done because it's a jump of 2
versions.

@Alberto: Never mind the XServer-Version. I did a fresh install, there's
always some space left on the HDD. btw I can still remeber the ENVY
days. The nvidia-driver-update strikes me, because i've ordered a newer
graphics card to join the testers when Quantal becomes beta.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 985820] Re: [nvidia 295.40] Xorg freeze or compiz freeze

2012-09-04 Thread A. Scheuer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 982485 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982485

Hi!

Well, I have a problem which seems similar: compiz freezes often at
destop change (I use the cube rotation), and may be (most of the time)
unfreezed by switching to the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) then back
(Ctrl+Alt+F7).

However, this happen on a first DELL with a NVidia video card (and there
was no problem with 11.10), but also on a recent one with an Intel card.

As a consequence, this has nothing IMHO in common with bug #982485.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045813] [NEW] Touchpad primary button not working SONY Vaio VGN-CS11S with nvidia-current

2012-09-04 Thread Khlood Elsayed

3) What is expected to happen is when one installs nvidia-current and
restarts, the touchpad continues to work as it did with nouveau.

4) What happens instead is the primary button does not work. The same
problem occurs using an external mouse. The cursor may still be moved
around with the touchpad or the external mouse, and the secondary button
works as well.

With the nouveau drivers the touchpad stops working after a period of
inactivity or of high graphic output (ex. usually flash content in
Firefox). Hence, this mouse problem is correlated to an X driven
problem. This problem in nouveau was also present in Precise.

All attachments are provided when nvidia-current was still installed and

Same here. Ubuntu 12.04 and Gnome-Shell with Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT. No
crashes since I have installed version 304.43 of Nvidia drivers. To
avoid the crash before, the only way was using version 295.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045845] [NEW] 12.10 guest crash on login when using 12.04 qemu-kvm with cirrus driver

2012-09-04 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

On a 12.10 amd64 host with the 12.04 LTS qemu-kvm package (due to bug
#1040033) using the cirrus (ie, the default qemu-kvm driver) with an up
to date 12.10 guest (machine='pc-1.0'), lightdm starts fine. If I
proceed to login, X crashes. If I upgrade qemu-kvm to 1.1~rc+dfsg-
1ubuntu10, I am able to login fine.

I don't know why the crash file wasn't uploaded. That said, this happens
every time and is easy to reproduce.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045845] Re: Crash on login when using 12.04 qemu-kvm with cirrus driver

2012-09-04 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I'm going to add a qemu-kvm task as well. While X shouldn't crash, there
might be a problem with the cirrus functionality.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045813] Re: Touchpad primary button not working SONY Vaio VGN-CS11S with nvidia-current

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045899] [NEW] Maximum number of clients reached

2012-09-04 Thread Lawrence D'Anna
Public bug reported:

After repeatedly using nitrogen to set my background picture, the X11
server ceases to accept new connections.

xlib reports Maximum number of clients reached.

nitrogen does not show up in ps or xlsclients.

xlsclients reports only 18 clients.

I filed it under xorg because even though nitrogen triggers the problem,
it seems that the actual problem is a resource leak in the X11 server.

2012-09-04 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Serge, regarding fixing bug #1040033, indeed. :) However I'm quite sure
that LTS users will not be able to test/use 12.10 if this bug isn't
fixed in SRU for qemu-kvm or Xorg in 12.10 is fixed.

To avoid any misunderstandings: The Verification is not needed for the
Quetzal but for Precise. The guys with Quetzal do have both packages
alreday, and they donT need the SRU-Verification as it is in
Development.

Would installing xorg-video-abi-12 concurrently with xorg-video-abi-13

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046089] Re: back up

2012-09-04 Thread Dave Lentz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045845] Re: 12.10 guest crash on login when using 12.04 qemu-kvm with cirrus driver

2012-09-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Please collect a full backtrace on this crash - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance.

** Description changed:

On a 12.10 amd64 host with the 12.04 LTS qemu-kvm package (due to bug
#1040033) using the cirrus (ie, the default qemu-kvm driver) with an up
to date 12.10 guest (machine='pc-1.0'), lightdm starts fine. If I
proceed to login, X crashes. If I upgrade qemu-kvm to 1.1~rc+dfsg-
1ubuntu10, I am able to login fine.

I don't know why the crash file wasn't uploaded. That said, this happens
every time and is easy to reproduce.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033222] Re: NVidia driver in Quantal not compatible with X.org/kernel

But they won't work, so it makes little sense, and is even dangerous, to
show them when they don't work. ubuntu-drivers-common quite deliberately
hides them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033222] Re: NVidia driver in Quantal not compatible with X.org/kernel

2012-09-04 Thread Doug McMahon
I have to disagree - they work fine, have seen no recent complaints can use
them here with no issue as are many others.
(for reasons totally unrelated to nvidia-current performance.compatibility i
choose to use nouveau

The package list for nvidia-current has this for Depends
Depends: x11-common (= 1:7.0.0), make, sed ( 3.0), dkms, linux-libc-dev,
libc6-dev, linux-headers-generic | linux-headers, patch, acpid, libc6 (=
2.2.5), libgcc1 (= 1:4.1.1), libx11-6, libxext6, libxv1, libxvmc1, zlib1g (=
1:1.1.4), xorg-video-abi-11 | xorg-video-abi-12 | xorg-video-abi-13,
xserver-xorg-core (= 2:1.10.99.901)

The changelog -
nvidia-graphics-drivers (304.43-0ubuntu1) quantal; urgency=low

  * debian/rules:
- Add support for X ABI 13.
clipped
Fixed a bug that caused pre-release versions of
X.Org xserver 1.13 to crash when certain GLX
operations were performed, such as when starting
  Firefox.

It seems here that ubuntu-drivers-common reads - xorg-video-abi-11 |
xorg-video-abi-12 | xorg-video-abi-13 and stops at xorg-video-abi-11

Symptoms are that desktop freezes for a second or two, then all
applications are killed and we're returned to the login screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033242] Re: X server crashes

2012-09-04 Thread Erno Kuusela
This started happening frequently enough that I broke out the xorg sources and
figured out how to associate
the crash address to a line number. (*)

It's crashing at the line where it's dereferencing client-osPrivate, I'd guess
there's a missing null check of client-osPrivate at the start of AttendClient,
since many other functions in os/connection.c do a null check on that one but
AttendClient doesn't.
Of course it still might be a can't-happen situation for some implicit reason
and something bigger is going wrong...

(*)
install dbg version of xorg core package, get source and start build far enough
to apply patches, then
use print function-name in gdb to get address of function, and apply the
