[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-09-05 Thread Kostas Manetakis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096

I have the same problem on a Fujitsu P3110 netbook with 12.04,Classic-
Gnome (no effects), 256G SSD, no nvidia card. After a fresh install
with 12.04.1, I got the problem a day or so later.

It has been running with no Xorg crash so far after the following
change:

(1) Created a xorg.conf with
sudo X :1 -configure
which creates a xorg.conf.new in the ~ directory. Then,
sudo cp ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
to copy it to the /etc/X11/ directory
(2) Inspecting the xorg.conf I saw that it had created Screen0, Screen1
Screen2 Sections. I removed the Screen1 Screen2 sections. My xorg.conf now
looks as shown below:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 812594] Re: HP USB Graphics Adapter (Displaylink) shows green screen

2012-09-05 Thread Richard Crossley
Hi,

This works with Linux Mint 13 too, which is based on 12.04 although gdm
is replaced by mdm

The file /etc/gdm/Init/Default is replaced by /etc/mdm/Init/Default, so
the xwit command is added in there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-09-05 Thread Stephane
I am really at the end of my patience here, my system is a E350 Sony
laptop (AMD/HD6300), it has happily been freezing continuously for the
past months almost daily, i tried everything, countless kernel
variations, reinstalls, fucked around with Flash, with the thermal.off
flag, manually installed catalyst drivers...this POS keeps freezing...i
have wasted hours of my time on this, which leaves me with a really sour
taste. The other day i was reading on how OSX allegedly killed the Linux
desktop, well no shit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-09-05 Thread Tim Haw
I don't know If this will help identify the bug but I had the same
problem on 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 running unity and gnome. I use this
computer for work so out of desparation I tried Xubuntu 12.04 which
works without any problems on the same system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 795920]

2012-09-05 Thread Stefan Nagy
I add links to two related bugs in the debian BTS:
- debian bug 609903 (HP G62 laptop): LED indicator in the upper left corner of
the touchpad itself.
- debian bug 683762 (HP Folio 13-2000 laptop): LED indicator between the
touchpad and the keyboad.

Apart from that I thought it might be a good idea to add links to the
unfinished patch sent upstream by Takashi Iwai a while ago (review by Peter
Hutterer):
- http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.devel/13437 (patch)
- http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.devel/13607 (review)

I'm affected by this bug on the HP Folio 13-2000 laptop. I'd be glad to
provide more information and/or test revised patches.

issue.

2012-09-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The second monitor (screen) is unstable. Sometimes works ok, but in many
opportunities the screen is in green with some shadows that you identify
the apps.

My graphic card is Radeon ATI 1550.

I have installed the last version of Ubuntu 12.04.

The problem is under Gnome classic or 3, or Unity.

Thank you.

Mario.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046308] [NEW] Week 36 - Nvidia suspend resume issue

2012-09-05 Thread Nice Testhouse
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 precise with ppa:unity-team/sru

Issue: System fails to resume and gets stuck with a screen of random
blocks.(Checked the version of Nvidia under system settings -
Additional drivers and Nvidia version 173 was active).

Action:
#. Ensure unity is running on a machine with a nvidia GPU using the proprietary
nvidia driver
#. Put the machine to sleep
#. Resume the machine from sleep

Additional info - Manual restart solved the above issue.
Changed the version of Nvidia driver from version 173 to recommended version
and repeated the suspend-resume test, this time system was able to resume OK
with no problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046326] [NEW] Ubuntu Slow, crash, sluggish from version 10.04 upwards on i3/i5/i7 machines

2012-09-05 Thread Michael Atkinson
Public bug reported:

This is an attempt to get proper attention to the massive amounts of
people stuggling with ubuntu freezing at random, or becoming very slow
or sluggish. ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/993187 )

Developers won't work on it because the problem is not given enough
detail. This is however a severe issue. Here's my info gathered so far:

Ubuntu will at random points suddenly become very slow and sluggish.
graphics run far behind, keyboard strokes take multiple seconds to show,
graphics are updated in super slowmo mode, or if you're unlucky; the
system dies completely.

This is related to a problem with the interrupt handling. On my own
machine (MSI i7, nvidia card, 16 Gb, 5 sata HDD's) I have had this
problem from 10.04 (when I bough the hware) up to 12.04. I have since
upgraded up to kernel 3.5.3 with varying results. Some suggestions in
posts make the periods between crashes shorter, some days it works fine,
some days it happens every five minutes, but it NEVER goes away.

If you consider this is interrupt related, that makes perfect sense.
Every single 'crash' is marked by an unanswered interrupt. See below
syslog:

Sep 5 15:13:14 Server kernel: [112195.631364] irq 16: nobody cared (try
booting with the irqpoll option)

Sep 5 15:13:14 Server kernel: [112195.631471] Disabling IRQ #16

The problem is massively compounded by the fact that irqpoll and irqfixup
options NO LONGER WORK AT ALL (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/855199https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/855199
 ).

No matter if you switch to Nouveau, diff kernel, or other drivers, the
problem remains is varying severity. Again; logical if there is a
problem with the kernel interrupt handling itself.

So here's the kicker. It is easy to resolve! By forcing a restart of the
interrupt handlers the system INSTANTLY comes back to 100% functional
life:

root@Server:~# service network-manager restart

My theory (for what it's worth; I have programmed assembly for 40 years)
is that there is a multi-threading fault somewhere, which causes the
kernel to miss an interrupt, or to miss allocating it.

There is truly no point in uploading hardware specs and/or software
config to this bug. There are litteraly thousands of different configs
experiencing the same issue. The one thing they have in common though:
Shared interrupts (usually 16) and LOAD on that interrupt (USB (KB+MS),
VGA, ETH) on high speed machines.

I strongly urge the kernel people to accept responsibility for this one.
The problem is getting very much out of hand because it seems to get
worse as CPU power increases. And more and more people are increasing to
I7 etc Hence the massive flood of problems.

I have created a keyboard shortcut that does the service restart and
this works perfectly 100% of the time. If any dev needs more info,
contact me.

I hope this gets some very VERY high level attentions VERY soon. This is
extremely damaging to Linux in general.

Michael

 ).
+ The problem is massively compounded by the fact that irqpoll and
+ irqfixup options NO LONGER WORK AT ALL (
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/855199 ).

  Michael

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: vmwgfx kernel module not loaded by default

2012-09-05 Thread Joseph Salisbury
@Barry,

Was there a prior kernel version that did not have this issue?

I see that the vmwgfx driver is configured to be a module in the kernel config
file:
config.common.ubuntu:CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX=m

Can you also attach your /var/log/syslog file?

One additional request, can you test the latest mainline kernel[0]?

Thanks in advance

Can folks affected by this bug test the latest Quantal kernel? You can
update to the latest kernel for this release by simply running the
following commands in a terminal window:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux

See http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo#radeon-KMS_power-management

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: vmwgfx kernel module not loaded by default

2012-09-05 Thread Tim Gardner
Barry - its not clear if the attached kern.log in comment #11 is after
you've added vmwgfx to /etc/modules. At any rate, that module is getting
loaded about 20 seconds into the boot:

[ 20.863814] [drm] Initialized vmwgfx 2.4.0 20120209 for :00:0f.0
on minor 0

The vmwgfx module is a PCI device driver and should get auto-loaded by
udev when it sees the PCI device ID 0x15ad:0x0405 which I can see from
your lspci.txt:

00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: VMware SVGA II Adapter
[15ad:0405] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Have you made any external updates to VMware or OS/X ?

Also please try 'grep -i vmwgfx /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules*'

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046450] [NEW] Xorg freeze with NVidia GT 610 graphics card under Xen

2012-09-05 Thread Gizmo Chicken
Public bug reported:

I have an NVidia GT 610 graphics card with the nvidia-current
295.40-0ubuntu1.1 driver installed.Video is flawless when booting
directly into the standard kernel. However, when attempting run Ubuntu
12.04 as dom0 in Xen using the 295.40 driver, my screen invariably goes
blank just after seeing the initial Ubuntu splash screen. and always
before the LightDM login screen is displayed.

I'll just add that I have experienced nearly the same issue using the
304.43 driver obtained from ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. However, when
attempting run Ubuntu 12.04 as dom0 in Xen using the 304.43 driver, I
can get to the LightDM login screen, but then my screen invariably goes
blank when I attempt to start Unity from LightDM.

I'll further add that the Nvidia card was installed to replace an older
graphics card (which I no longer have and don't recall the make, but am
pretty sure it didn't have an Nvidia chipset) whose cooling fan had
died. I never had any problems running Ubuntu as dom0 in Xen with that
older card.

In response to comment #85, it's probably not useful for you to test
proposed unless you can reliabley reproduce with the -updates package
_or_ you know that this bug triggers frequently enough that when you
install the new package you know it's fixed because it doesn't crash.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: vmwgfx kernel module not loaded by default

2012-09-05 Thread Barry Warsaw
Hi Tim,

On Sep 05, 2012, at 04:54 PM, Tim Gardner wrote:

I don't remember actually, but I just disabled the /etc/modules entry and
rebooted. I'll attach my full kern.log, but here are some useful information:

% grep -i vmwgfx /var/log/kern.log
Sep 4 11:40:18 resist kernel: [7.393370] [drm] Initialized vmwgfx 2.4.0
20120209 for :00:0f.0 on minor 0

% glxinfo | grep -i open
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x301)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.1-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

% lsmod | grep vmwgfx
(no output)

% lspci | grep -i vga
00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller: VMware SVGA II Adapter

% uname -a
Linux resist 3.5.0-13-generic #14-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 29 16:48:44 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

That kern.log hit is from yesterday, so definitely when I had the /etc/modules
line enabled. No hit from the reboot today, and the use of llvmpipe clearly
shows that the module isn't getting loaded by default.

Have you made any external updates to VMware or OS/X ?

No. I'm still running Fusion 4.1.3 (build 730298) though I am considering
upgrading to Fusion 5.0 which was recently released. Host is running OS X
10.6.8.

Also please try 'grep -i vmwgfx /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules*'

% grep -i vmwgfx /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules*
/lib/modules/3.5.0-13-generic/modules.dep:kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx.ko:
 kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/ttm/ttm.ko kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/drm.ko
Binary file /lib/modules/3.5.0-13-generic/modules.dep.bin matches
/lib/modules/3.5.0-13-generic/modules.order:kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx.ko

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039157] Re: vmwgfx kernel module not loaded by default

2012-09-05 Thread Barry Warsaw
On Sep 05, 2012, at 03:11 PM, Joseph Salisbury wrote:

Was there a prior kernel version that did not have this issue?

Yes, but I can't remember exactly which version this broke on. It definitely
worked all through 12.04 and in 12.10 up until whatever upgrade I happened to
do on-or-about 2012-08-20 (when I filed the bug). I'm pretty diligent about
doing once or twice daily upgrades on this machine, so it couldn't have been
much past when the failure started to occur.

From the bug report, it looks like the failure started happening at about
3.5.0-11.11-generic.

I see that the vmwgfx driver is configured to be a module in the kernel config
file:
config.common.ubuntu:CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX=m

Can you also attach your /var/log/syslog file?

See attached. Note from my previous comment that this is after a reboot
disabling the /etc/modules entry.

One additional request, can you test the latest mainline kernel[0]?

Thanks in advance

[0] http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc4-quantal/

Yep, I'll give those a shot and report back.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-09-05 Thread Kostas Manetakis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096

Xorg crashes again after suspending, resuming and moving one finger
frantically on the touch-pad.

The issue may be related to the one reported on Debian:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/xorg-server/+bug/956071

Tried downgrading the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package to
1.5.99.902-0ubuntu5 as suggested there, but it does not help.

2012-09-05 Thread Flames_in_Paradise
It is beyond my common sense of understanding.

~ 300 shops start selling Ubuntu-preinstalled Laptops in India in 2012
~ 800 shops start selling Ubuntu-preinstalled machines in the asian continent
this year.

A goal is set raise the number of sold machines up to 5%.

And we can' start testing because the nvidia-settings part is missing
overal 3 weeks now since this was reported.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046588] [NEW] Dependency on gesture stack must be updated due to rename

2012-09-05 Thread Chase Douglas
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
The gesture stack has been renamed to Open Input Framework. The dependency on
grail must be changed to libgrail-dev.

[Test Case]
Ensure that the package continues to build and function as normal after
installation. Nothing specific needs to be tested.

[Regression Potential]
Practically zero as long as the package builds. If any issues arise, they will
likely be noticed immediately in the form of crashes due to unresolved symbols.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 912134] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x01840000

2012-09-05 Thread David Monro
Just hit this bug with my thinkpad X201 (Arrandale core i7 M620) after the
following sequence:
xrandr --output HDMI1 --off (its actually a DVI display using a DP-DVI cable
from the docking station)
undock
suspend
get home, unsuspend
Notice that xrandr still thinks I have a 3200 pixel wide display (1920 for the
external monitor, 1280 for the laptop panel). I don't think I've had this
happen before.
Run xrandr --fb 1280x800
black screen, and 'Sorry, Ubuntu 12.04 has experienced an internal error'
dialog after reboot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1041625] Re: X not starting after install [openchrome]

2012-09-05 Thread Walter Lapchynski
it seems that ppc is having a problem with X, too, but i don't think
it's the same problem. furthermore, i don't think any apple computer (i
realize there are other ppc machines out there but they tend to be more
rare) ever had a chipset supported by openchrome. someone correct me if
i'm wrong. but it sounds like lars' ppc problem needs to be made into a
new bug.

Hi Xavier,

It looks like ubuntu 12.10 doesn't have the updated version yet.
Should I build the new version from source code or I can wait for ubuntu

Thanks for support,

It depends on how fast you want to confirm this is actually fixed or
not. I'm not surprised Ubuntu doesn't have an updated package yet, I've
uploaded the new release less than 24 hours ago ;-)

If you want to build from source, you might want to look at this :

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1041625] Re: X not starting after install [openchrome]

2012-09-05 Thread Ron Mitchell
I'm a newbie here, and most of this is going way over my head.

However I've been having trouble with Lubuntu 12.10 (PPC desktop) for
the past few days, right up to today's build (Sept 5).

1) wireless network applet on the lower task bar appears to be dead.
When I click on it, nothing happens.

2) If I click on the Install Lubuntu CD icon, top left hand corner,
the header of a window appears. It's entitled Install:, but all I see
is the header and the outline of where the dialogue box is supposed to
be.

3) If I open PCManFM, the colour scheme is completely seems distorted in
places particularly at the top left just under the tool bar, where the
forward/back buttons are. Horizontally striped colours that make the
buttons almost unreadable.

4) If I try to Quit the Installation, there is another blank dialogue
box with only a red circled exclamation point at the left top and the
words Quit the installation? in the centre, and the usual - + X

All of this with today's build running an an eMac G4 PPC running at 1.2
Ghz - 4 Gig Ram - 80 Gig hard drive.

Should I be filing bug reports, or are these issues already known?
