This change has been applied in quantal and as a direct result has made boot splash unusable for all users when the nvidia drivers are installed (bug #1063969). This thread is so long. Solution is to not use 12.04, rollback to 11.10 and save yourself a bunch of time. I'll give 12.10 a spin, but will be keeping 11.10 on hand if tat still as these problems. Yes I have installed fglrx manually (the legacy version), only did this after Unity was not starting directly. This bug only happened after the upgrade from 12.04. I use lubuntu and xubuntu DE and on lightdm i cannot type password the screen "reset" at very first char input of user password and cycle to login again. I can login by choosing "other" and by setting user (not changing user, there only one user defined on this system) and by putting the password (no lightdm-reset in this way) Cannot switch to pseudo terminal with ctrl+alt+F1 due wrong resolution or some related to xorg. @Rocko in #44 Modifying the xorg.conf worked for me, and it's a less aggressive workaround that downgrading the drivers while we wait for the next nvidia release, and is easy to revert if it doesn't work anyway. This Video card is listed on the Certified hardware, one would think it is supposed to work pretty well. http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/component/pci:1002:9715-VIDEO/ http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/component/pci:1022:9601/ The Motherboard and chipset may have variances but 12.04 worked, 10.10 worked, so... I think it is reasonable to suggest something broke between that point, and the latest 12.10. Other than AMD punting support for slightly not brand new products, I can't see what it it. Public bug reported: Hi, I recently obtained a mainboard called ASUS P5VD1-X. This is a little "odd ball" of a mainboard. It contains an AGP 8X Slot (AGP 1.5V) and a PCI Express Gen 1 x16 Slot (x16 connector, x4 link). Both AGP and PCI Express are connected to the Northbridge chip, VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra. PT880 Ultra is one of the last VIA Technologies chipset that supported Intel platform. A perfect mainboard to do hardware compatibility validation against number of cards and Linux. I updated the BIOS to the last release version (Revision 0704). The problem is, booting will stop after displaying Unity GUI default background wallpaper image under Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit. It won't get to displaying launch bar with icons on the left side of the screen or a title bar on the top part of the screen. Note that I observed the same exact problem with XFX Radeon HD 5450 512 MB DDR3 SDRAM graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 5450, Cedar PRO). This bug doesn't seem to occur on Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA chipset-based mainboards for some reason. (Boot gentoo live-dvd with -nofb option) 4) With ubuntu and the xorg-edgers PPA, the corruption is present using both the "uxa" and "sna" AccelMethod options in xorg.conf 5) Sometimes, switching to a VT and back will clean up the image for a moment (i.e. until something moves) Also, after glxgears crashed with the error above, most applications were readable. Things also became better with the Cirrus driver and VMs. After being able to login I noticed that my KVM VM (which runs on a rather power efficient, iow not too fast, machine) still has occasional crashes of this type. And there you can see (and have to wait) every graphical "goodness" like fading in and out or docking. While the host I run the Xen VM (which uses the same cirrus emulation) runs rather smoothly (because it has more CPU power) and I think I did not see any crash, yet. That somehow leads me to believe this could be a problem (in the cirrus case) of the communication between X driver, llvm-pipe and the emulated card being overrun in some way. Not sure how this relates to the nouveau case. I would not think the X driver could be too fast for the 3D pipe in hardware.
