I'm using Intel HD3000, KDE 4.9.2, Mesa 9.0 and it's much slower than with mesa 8.0.4 in KWin with OpenGL backend and with VSync enabled, and you can see tearing. Not sure if this mesa or kwin bug. Arch Linux Intel HD Graphics 3000 KDE 4.9.2 MESA 9.0 The tearing seems to occur only in one area, about 1/5th of the way down the screen. It is as if the first 5th of the screen is updating slower. Downgrading Intel-DRI and libgl to 8.0.4 fixed the issue. Tried TearFree option in Xorg.conf and that gets rid of the tearing but makes the graphics unusably slow using KWin/OpenGL. They both use mesa 9.0 and kde 4.9.2, and the tearing happens in the top and bottom 1/5th parts of the screen. Going back to 8.0.4 solves the issue. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070427] Re: Nvidia proprietary drivers can't be installed via software center or any other easy, GUI way
What kernel headers did you have installed before? The correct kernel headers are installed by default for all Ubuntu architectures, to prevent exactly this. Also, nvidia-current has a dependency on "linux- headers-generic | linux-headers", so it should either pull -generic if you did not have any installed, or use an existing one if you have another flavour (like linux-headers-server). ** Package changed: ubuntu-drivers-common (Ubuntu) => nvidia-graphics- drivers (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Summary changed: - Nvidia proprietary drivers can't be installed via software center or any other easy, GUI way + fails to build due to missing kernel headers -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1070427 Title: fails to build due to missing kernel headers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/1070427/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070427] [NEW] Nvidia proprietary drivers can't be installed via software center or any other easy, GUI way
You have been subscribed to a public bug: The system in question is a Dell XPS 1340. It needs proprietary drivers because it's unable to suspend with the Nouveau drivers. Steps to reproduce: - Install Ubuntu 12.10 from USB stick - Open software-center - Go to Edit -> Software Sources - Go to the Additional Drivers tab - Select the first offered NVidia driver (nvidia-current) - Click on "apply changes" Expected result: - Nvidia module built and installed. - Nice build log in /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-current/304.43/build. Actual result: - Since linux-headers-generic is not installed, the module fails to build and upon rebooting most desktop elements will be absent. - /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-current/304.43/build is empty. - Here's the apt terminal log: Log started: 2012-10-23 11:45:29 Selecting previously unselected package dkms. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 922733] Re: Inappropriate response to GFX card problem
Shortly after my original post, I reinstalled Ubuntu because I could not figure out how to remove the proprietary video driver that may have contributed to the problem. Indeed, I was then able to get my video display to work again. But, about 3 or 4 months ago I ran into a blink blank problem and posted a new bug that may be related to this one: Bug #1044885. I posted this comment on Bug #1044885: 1. My PC's mother board has an ATI Radeon graphics chip. It blinked and blanked only when it recognized the monitor as a Dell 17". It did not blank when it recognized the monitor as Unknown. This happened occasionally after an update/upgrade. When that happened, I resisted updates. But, Ubuntu was smarter and would "upgrade" spontaneously. 2. In the belief that I might have a h/w problem, I added a new grapcs card: Zotac Nvidia GeForce GTX. The blinky blank problem became more pronounced and my on-board graphics ceased to provide VGA output. 3. I have replaced my Dell 17" monitor by my wife's LG monitor which is recognized by Linux as a Goldstar Company Ltd 23", 1920 x 1080 dispaly (VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)). The blinky blank problem is as bad as with the Dell 17" monitor. The problem is: - not the monitor - not the graphics hardware - not Ubuntu, as it seems I am the only person with this problem I am at a loss. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/922733 Title: Inappropriate response to GFX card problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/922733/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series
Christopher, This has been an issue for me since 10.04, so this bug has existed for 2.5 years. I recently just reinstalled Ubuntu and have the most upto date system. Now compiz is taking ~15% of my cpu. When can we expect this issue to be looked at and fixed, and not be put at the bottom of the pile? Or heck tell me how I can turn off compiz. If I remember the last time I looked at how the driver works, it uses a different way of managing the displays (I have had a lot of problems with dual monitors and ati drivers in the past. The driver doesn't use Xrandr to manage resolutions etc. it uses another library that I can't think of the name of at the moment. I think this is the problem, unity is not backward compatible with the library. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1068661 Title: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/fglrx/+bug/1068661/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070531] Re: fglrx drivers broken after upgrading to quantal
THREE bugs at once?! My usual luck! :) Let me answer you step by step: 1) I understand. I marked myself as affected and subscribed to that bug. I hope it gets solved soon, since the fglrx-legacy workaround didn't work for me; 2) Ok, so let's keep this as a bug in fglrx-* using HD 5400. Unfortunately, the bios shipped with my notebook really sucks. There's no other word I could use to describe it. I can't change ANYTHING from the BIOS, that's why I meant to play around with switcheroo, but to no avail. 3) Thanks for the tips! The possibility to switch governor totally slipped out of my mind. Though, I can only think of it as a temporary workaround. The main reason why I think it overheats it's because it's keeping both VGAs active. Should I file a new bug report to address my issues while using two cards simultaneously? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070531] Re: fglrx drivers broken after upgrading to quantal
Montblanc, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, you have unintentionally fell into at least 3 bugs at once: 1) Regarding your HD 4200 card in Quantal, you would be suffering from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1058040 . You are welcome to go to that report and mark yourself affected. 2) A bug in fglrx-* using HD 5400. 3) A bug while using two cards simultaneously. For now, this bug report can only focus on 2) as your HD4200 has a known bug in Quantal. Hence, could you please comment to if you have a way to disable the HD4200 card in BIOS or another method? Regarding your overheat problem, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/HighTemperatures#Working_around_overheat . ** Changed in: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Description changed: I'm using a HP Pavilion G62 that switches between two ATI cards: a HD 4200 and a HD 5400. After upgrading from Precise to Quantal, the resolution is very low, no compositing is available, Unity fails to load, no window decorations are present and I just get the cursor, a wallpaper and desktop icons (same as bug #1068661 ). Many people are experiencing (almost) the same issues with HD 6xxx and HD 7xxx branches too. - - My bug report could end here, however, I'm adding more information just - for completeness: - - I thought that since the Radeon HD 4xxx branch is now legacy - (unsupported) I had to install fglrx-legacy drivers from - ppa:makson96/fglrx (even if my secondary card is supported) which also - downgrades the X server, but it didn't work: I just got a black screen - and Xorg segmentation faults, no matter which xorg.conf is used (I tried - with Quantal's default and 'amdconfig --initial -f'). + I thought that since the Radeon HD 4xxx branch is now on the new driver + support model, I had to install fglrx-legacy drivers from + ppa:makson96/fglrx (even if my secondary card is under the original + support model) which also downgrades the X server, but it didn't work: I + just got a black screen and Xorg segmentation faults, no matter which + xorg.conf is used (I tried with Quantal's default and 'amdconfig + --initial -f'). I'm using the open source ati drivers now, which suffer from overheating. I can't get more that 30 minutes of uptime. - I also have the feeling that my system can't switch between the two VGA - cards (as in bug #1021024 ). That could explain the overheating that I'm - experiencing since forever (though with the open source ati drivers it's - gotten even worse, as I said before) or why fglrx is failing to detect - my cards / load properly. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1061073] Re: Desktop effects are slow and desktop corruption using mesa 9

Fair enough, I downloaded the i386 versions of libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1 -mesa-glx, libglapi-mesa and libglu1-mesa packages and installed them with dpkg -i. Unsurprisingly, libgl1-mesa-* remained unconfigured due to unsatisfied dependencies. I ten fired aptitude, who promptly suggested the removal of the 3 libs. @jfernyhough : I'm glad that there at least is a PPA to fix it. Until AMD updates its driver, I would say that the makson PPA is in fact the most optimal solution we have. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058040 Title: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/1058040/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070531] Re: fglrx drivers broken after upgrading to quantal
** Description changed: - Provide details about the issue. + I'm using a HP Pavilion G62 that switches between two ATI cards: a HD 4200 and a HD 5400. After upgrading from Precise to Quantal, the resolution is very low, no compositing is available, Unity fails to load, no window decorations are present and I just get the cursor, a wallpaper and desktop icons (same as bug #1068661 ). + Many people are experiencing (almost) the same issues with HD 6xxx and HD 7xxx branches too. + + + My bug report could end here, however, I'm adding more information just + for completeness: + + I thought that since the Radeon HD 4xxx branch is now legacy + (unsupported) I had to install fglrx-legacy drivers from + ppa:makson96/fglrx (even if my secondary card is supported) which also + downgrades the X server, but it didn't work: I just got a black screen + and Xorg segmentation faults, no matter which xorg.conf is used (I tried + with Quantal's default and 'amdconfig --initial -f'). + + I'm using the open source ati drivers now, which suffer from + overheating. I can't get more that 30 minutes of uptime. + + I also have the feeling that my system can't switch between the two VGA + cards (as in bug #1021024 ). That could explain the overheating that I'm + experiencing since forever (though with the open source ati drivers it's + gotten even worse, as I said before) or why fglrx is failing to detect + my cards / load properly. As you can see, switcheroo is enabled: + + $ grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-3.5.0-18-generic + CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO=y + + but I haven't got any /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo . + + Please, just tell me if you need more information. + + + $ lspci |grep VGA + 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] + 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series] + + + $ sudo lshw -C display + *-display +description: VGA compatible controller +product: RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] +vendor: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI +physical id: 5 +bus info: pci@:01:05.0 +version: 00 +width: 32 bits +clock: 33MHz +capabilities: pm msi vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom +configuration: driver=radeon latency=0 +resources: irq:18 memory:d000-dfff ioport:8000(size=256) memory:f230-f230 memory:f220-f22f + *-display +description: VGA compatible controller +product: Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series] +vendor: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI +physical id: 0 +bus info: pci@:02:00.0 +version: 00 +width: 64 bits +clock: 33MHz +capabilities: pm pciexpress msi vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom +configuration: driver=radeon latency=0 +resources: irq:45 memory:e000-efff memory:f210-f211 ioport:7000(size=256) memory:f212-f213 + + + $ lsb_release -a + No LSB modules are available. + Distributor ID: Ubuntu + Description: Ubuntu 12.10 + Release: 12.10 + Codename: quantal + + + $ uname -a + Linux ace 3.5.0-18-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 19 10:26:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux + + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: fglrx 2:9.000-0ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-18.29-generic 3.5.7 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-18-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx wl ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu4 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, bailer, detection, composite, opengl, decor, place, imgpng, compiztoolbox, snap, vpswitch, resize, regex, gnomecompat, move, mousepoll, grid, wall, session, unitymtgrabhandles, animation, expo, workarounds, fade, ezoom, scale, unityshell] CompositorRunning: compiz CurrentDmesg: [ 23.428471] r8169 :03:00.0: eth0: link down Date: Tue Oct 23 22:08:10 2012 DistUpgraded: 2012-10-19 19:21:19,811 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: quantal DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: bcmwl, 5.100.82.112+bdcom, 3.5.0-17-generic, x86_64: installed bcmwl, 5.100.82.112+bdcom, 3.5.0-18-generic, x86_64: installed fglrx, 9.000, 3.5.0-18-generic, x86_64: installed GraphicsCard: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] [1002:9712] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:143c] Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series] [1002:68e0] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:143c] InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release amd64 (20101007) JockeyStatus: kmod:wl - Broadcom STA wireless driver (Proprietary, Enabled, In use) [auto-install] kmod:fglrx - ATI Fire GL (Proprietary, Enabled, In use) kmod:fglrx_updates - Video driver for
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953860] Re: X11 development packages not multiarch in 12.04
I believe this bug is affecting me, and it prevents me from compiling for 32bit+64bit on Precise Pangolin. My issue is the "libxt-dev" and the "libxt-dev:i386" packages are incompatible, so I cannot install both at the same time. The same happens with "libxp-dev" and "libxp-dev:i386". This incompatibility didn't happen in the past. I was able to install support for compiling for 32bit and 64bit on Maverick Meerkat, with no problems, and it worked fine. I need to compile for 32bit and 64bit... is there some workaround available? Can I force install these incompatible packages, or is there some risk of breaking anything? What would you recommend me to do? Is it my best bet downgrading to Maverick? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015297] Re: Screen partially darkened after suspend and resume in Xubuntu
And amazingly I do have a workaround! Well, for AMD/ATI users at least. If you have the proprietary AMD drivers installed, open up the Catalyst Control Center and switch over to the "Color" screen. Tweak the "Gamma" setting (make sure "All(locked)" is selected under "Select Color Channel:") and the screen should pop back into full brightness. Hit the reset button for that slider (off to the right-end of it) and it should stick. I'm not sure if this is applicable to Nvidia users, or users without proprietary drivers. Nvidia users should definitely try this if they have their proprietary drivers and have access to their equivalent of AMD's CCC (don't remember what it's called for Nvidia cards). Non- proprietary driver users should look into installing Redshift (run "sudo apt-get install gtk-redshift") to graphically tweak the gamma settings. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1015297 Title: Screen partially darkened after suspend and resume in Xubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pm-utils/+bug/1015297/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015297] Re: Screen partially darkened after suspend and resume in Xubuntu
Here comes another "me too" message. I'm experiencing the same bug. Dell Studio 1558 (AMD Radeon HD standalone graphics adapter) with (K/X/L)ubuntu 12.04. I'm currently using proprietary drivers. This bug had occurred on this machine before (I think in 11.04 or 11.10), but I figured it was a one-time bug. Now it's happening again for no discernible reason. Like others, it's happening when opening the laptop's lid (in my case to resume, though it sounds like it's not limited to resuming). Mouse is still at full brightness. I haven't tried logging off yet (my screen's still dimmed right now); I'm putting that off so I can save all my work. I don't think the card specifically is the issue (since it's affecting AMD and Nvidia chipsets alike), but I'm going to test things like compositing and what not to see if I can force some kind of workaround.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070481] [NEW] memory corruption in xorg-server when closing acpid
Public bug reported: [IMPACT] * If acpid is closed before server is shutdown (for example with shutdown -h now, or stop acpid) a memory corruption will occur, because the acpi handler frees itself from a linked list before the next entry is taken. This will cause a reliable in valgrind, and in the worst case can cause the X server to shutdown uncleanly, or corrupt silently. * the fix is simply taking the next member before calling the handler in xf86WakeUp [TESTCASE] * Start X with valgrind --free-fill=fe * stop acpid * Server crashes [Regression Potential] I don't believe there's much potential for regressions, since the code is called from few places, and I do not believe any of the handlers depend on the specific order in which they're called. Potentially suitable for precise too. [Other Info] I originally wanted to get this in before quantal release, but lost out due to time, but this would be more involved than converting the offending function to use nt_list_for_each_entry_safe. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570151] Re: mouse stuck jumping between screens
My particular occurrence of this bug has nothing to do with virtual machines, it seems to be an X server or nVidia driver issue, since it even occurs at the login screen, and with any dm (lxdm, gdm, lightdm, kdm...). My mouse does not bounce between the two screens as in the videos, it "wraps around" the screen instead of going back over to the screen it came from. The reason I think this is a similar bug is because it seems to be related to the nVidia driver, a multihead setup and problems going between screens. My particular machine has 24GB of RAM but I don't see any unusual memory usage when the mouse gets "stuck" in the screen. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570151 Title: mouse stuck jumping between screens To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/570151/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570151] Re: mouse stuck jumping between screens
@andrew: I may be wrong, but I think you are experiencing a different bug. Does your mouse cursor behave like the video in comment #15? Nobody has reported seeing this bug since Oneiric, and it went away for me when I upgraded my Natty X server to the version used in Oneiric. So, I believe this bug was fixed in Oneiric. If you are experiencing this exact same bug, that's unfortunate and surprising news.
I want to note that I have not experienced this issue in awhile. That could be because of one or all of these things: 1) The problem has been solved in the software (unlikely) 2) I have not been using a Virtual Machine (could be tied to #3) 3) I have noticed that my memory usage is relatively low lately (with both actually memory and cache added together). This tells me that it may have been a memory issue making something crash due to the lack of available memory.
