[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1049460] Re: [Intel HD4000] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x01000000 IPEHR: 0x01000000

2012-10-25 Thread Edward Donovan
For what little it's worth, I haven't experienced this crash again, but
after a bumpy period I stopped running concurrent X sessions. X
stability has been much nicer in general, though, since the time when I
reported this, during a period when several releases were described as
"Merge from unreleased debian git". Thanks.

2012-10-25 Thread Jon Eliot
Thank you,
I will certainly do this if and when the problem reappears. Now on
12.10, and things are slightly different.

No problem with boot, but serious trouble that is superficially similar
to the boot problems on resume from suspend with 2 X sessions active.
The same popups, but now they mean business :-).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069574] Re: Intel graphics card driver update causes black screen

2012-10-25 Thread Travis Glenn Hansen
I don't personally own this laptop, but I just finished helping a
relative and here is what I've found.

1. In his setup it's a kernel update, using the older kernel works. Can you do
the same? (3.2.0-24-generic vs. 3.2.0-32-generic)
2. It appears to be the exact same issue with 12.10. He can't even boot to a
12.10 install media.

I will attach the 2 dmesg from both kernels.

This seems to be the root of the problem. You need
linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic and linux-headers-generic as well, and
they are indeed on the default image:

  http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.10/ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.manifest

So this looks like a bug during installation. Perhaps ubiquity removes
the kernel headers for some reason? Can you please attach
/var/log/installer/syslog?

The proxy can certainly play a role in here, but as the kernel headers
are already in the live system and thus should be copied to the
installation, it does not need network access to get them.

> 5- sudo apt-get install nvidia-current. Results in this (notice the

Ah, I see the problem: nvidia-current depends on
"linux-headers-generic | linux-headers", the intention is that you can
also run e. g. the -lowlatency flavour and build against
linux-headers-lowlatency instead. However, linux-headers-3.5.0-17
provides "linux-headers, linux-headers-3", which is a bad thing to do
as they are incomplete! Only linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic should
provide linux-headers (and does). Andy, what do you think about this?

Thanks,

Martin

Public bug reported:

Installing fglrx driver results in no desktop on fresh install of ubuntu
12.10 64 bit, and generates crash reports. I installed using software
sources and manual install by command line. the lightdm login screen
will show and allow me to log in and thats it, no unity desktop after
that, I can get gnome fallback because I installed gnome shell. On a
side note the install of 12.10 has been by far the most frustrating I've
experienced in 3 years.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 997470] Re: apport-gpu-error-intel.py keep crashing for 4-5 times on every reboot

2012-10-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
apport-gpu-error-intel.py is just a script that gets run when udev
detects a GPU fault. I am not able to reproduce any of the problems
people are reporting, but probably that's because I do not get GPU
faults on my hardware.

The fix I uploaded is to stop installing the udev rule that triggers
running /usr/share/apport/apport-gpu-error-intel.py

See `man udevadm` for tips on examining your udev rules. I can't find
on my systems anywhere that this script is being hooked in. But perhaps
in certain corner cases it's still present. You can use udevadm to
identify where it's hooked in. If it shows up there, let me know what
you find, and that may give me more clues on how to fix this better.

If you don't care to have a proper fix, and just want to eliminate the
behavior on your system locally, just delete /usr/share/apport/apport-
gpu-error-intel.py and it should stop bothering you (at least until your
system updates and re-installs that file).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071564] [NEW] ATI video driver circles round login screen

2012-10-25 Thread Andrey Barrientos M.
Public bug reported:

As suggested by SteVe Cook (yorvyk) in this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
sis/+bug/1034812 ("SiS video driver circles round login screen"), I have
opened a new bug.

As stated in that bug: "Login screen just flicks on screen then screen
goes blank before login screen flickers back on and of for ever more."

The same behavior is happening with an integrated ATI Rage Pro (AGP 2X
and 4M memory) graphic card in a Dell OptiPlex GX1 using Lubuntu 12.10
Quantal Quetzal. After upgrading from 12.04, it doesn't enter in the X
system, and the system tries to change to the graphic mode
unsuccessfully in a loop indefinitely. Previous this upgrade the system
was working fine.

I don't attach the xorg.log because it wasn't present in the system and
this computer doesn't make use of xorg.conf. However I've attached the
dmesg and lspci. It is using the latest Lubuntu kernel.

I appreciate any help given in this subject and thank you for the time
and effort solving this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 899669] Re: Screen Corruption and crash after Gnome Shell login

2012-10-25 Thread joatmor
I have been having a very similar issue with Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome
Shell. I am not entirely sure but I think that I have now fixed it by
replacing my video card. The old one was an ATI X1300 with 128 megs and
the new one is an ATI HD4650 with 512 megs. I suspect that the old card
was only marginally able to keep up with the systems's demands while the
new one has no issue. Meanwhile, you can do an ALT-F2 and then type r
and return to restart the Gnome Shell. Until I was able to replace my
video board that worked for me every time. Hope that helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series

2012-10-25 Thread lachoneus
HP Envy 15 3033cl Radeon HD 7690M, same issue. Was working fine with
Ubuntu 12.04, did a distro update to 12.10, through the console.
During boot it would automatically drop to the console, no GUI
whatsoever. Tried re installing from a clean install, like many others
here, and have been unable to get it to install correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071474] Re: [Dell Studio XPS 1340] DisplayPort does not work

2012-10-25 Thread Daniel Manrique
The XPS 1340 that fails has this combination of NVidia GPUs:

[21.888] (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 9400M G (C79) at PCI:3:0:0
(GPU-0)
[27.000] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-1): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 9200M GS (G98) at PCI:2:0:0

(GPU-0)
[27.531] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-1): NVIDIA GPU GeForce G210M (GT218) at PCI:2:0:0

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071474] [NEW] [Dell Studio XPS 1340] DisplayPort does not work

2012-10-25 Thread Daniel Manrique
Public bug reported:

On this system the VGA and HDMI ports work fine, but displayport
doesn't. Nothing happens at all when I plug in the displayport external
screen. The screen is a Dell P2210, it was tested to work fine on two
other systems (including another XPS 1340 with a different set of video
chips).

Let me know if any more info can be useful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2012-10-25 Thread Martin Weber
I had this bug sporadically, too. I cannot reproduce it, though. Usually
pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1, logged in on console and killed X. Now I have tried
to do the

sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse

This worked! I am using two mice with Kubuntu 12.04, namely the builtin
AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad and Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M555b. The
problem appeared in different applications, e.g. firefox or when
unlocking the screensaver on KDE.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071442] [NEW] Dell Latitude E5430+12.04 - X Freezes

2012-10-25 Thread Roger Eduardo P. de Almeida
Public bug reported:

I couldn't determine yet what is causing the problem or how to reproduce it.
But my Dell Latitude E5430 with 12.04 just freeze from time to time (normally
once in two days).
The screen, mouse and keyboard just freeze( I can't turn the caps-lock light)
If some want me to run any command to give more information let me know.

thks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1043513] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in memcpy() via cirRefreshArea() under KVM virtual machine

2012-10-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
Bug 1056511 has a proposed fix posted to it; if you suspect this might
be a dupe of that bug then it would be worthwhile to test that patch.

Bug 1053702 (and bug 1045845) is another recent cirrus crash that was
fixed about a month ago. If you've not reproduced the crash in October
it is possible that was the cause of the problems.

In either case, please set this as a dupe accordingly. If the crash
still occurs with latest quantal please post a fresh backtrace - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 941708] Re: system crashes (freezes) while LibreOffice is running

2012-10-25 Thread Ringelkrat
I tried to execute the reporting procedure from [1, 2] and especially
[3]:

Nothing has been logged in kern.log during occurrence of the crash. The
last logs were from the reboot process, which was necessary after the
crash. The messages before were logged long before the system froze.

Xorg.0.log seem to be reset at reboot. Thus I can not tell if something
has been written there before the final freezing.

When the system crashes (freeze), I can not switch to a terminal (via
CTRL+ALT+F1). Thus I can not save a trace dump. But I noticed, that I
can still move the mouse, although the rest of the screen is frozen. At
the moment I have no second machine available, which I could use to
inspect the "sick" machine via ssh.

I did a memtest just in case, which passed (1/1).

I future I might use the following commands while using libreoffice:
sudo tail -f /proc/kmsg &> kmsg &
tail -f /var/log/syslog &> syslog &
tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log &
To log further details, if it helps. But as I said, I do not use libreoffice
this often, thus it might take a while until I deliver this data. Remember that
this issue does only occur while using libreoffice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071395] [NEW] Xorg freeze when unplugging AC power

2012-10-25 Thread Pablo180
Public bug reported:

This is happening very frequently. I use dual external monitors with my
laptop. When the laptop battery has charged, I unplug the AC cable. This
results in both screens going black for a second or two and then
resuming. However, every so often, approximately 1 in 3 times, the
screen is frozen when it returns. I see the desktop but nothing is
clickable, the mouse moves but I cannot select anything.

Pressing CTRL + ALT + F1 and attempting to restart Unity, always fails,
although I do sometimes get the keyboard back (i.e. I can open a
terminal via the keyboard and enter commands, but the result is the same
- the desktop proper does not re-appear). The only solution is to kill
Xorg or a hard reset.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071389] [NEW] nvidia-current conflicts with fglrx (both cards present)

2012-10-25 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

I have primary AMD FirePro GPU for graphics and a secondary headless
nVidia GTX 560Ti for OpenCL. In Ubuntu 12.04, it was possible to install
both nvidia-current and fglrx alongside, and after adjusting alternatves
for libGL.so, Xorg would happily use the first card, and nVidia was
available for OpenCL computations.

Since quantal, nvidia-current is conflicting with fglrx. While I can
imagine this is intentional (most users won't ever need to install
both), it is nevertheless a packaging bug.

Please provide at least a workaround on how to install both drivers
simultaneously.

Version informations attached automatically (I hope).

2012-10-25 Thread Хаджиев

Using a Dell Vostro 3350 and have the same problem.
While waiting for a better solution, you can always switch off one of the GPUs.
Still will at least make your fan to stop running at full speed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2012-10-25 Thread Cloudane
This makes using Ubuntu on a modern MacBook very tricky (it's almost
impossible with a trackpad that size NOT to have a stray finger or thumb
interfering so it does all sorts of weird and wonderful things). It's
pretty much the one thing holding me back from using Ubuntu on it for
extended periods.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1063969] Re: No Plymouth Splash on Latitude E6420

2012-10-25 Thread emptythevoid
Do we know if nvidia is looking to rectify this problem on their end? I
know its a minor thing, the boot screen, (and I agree, system stability
always wins) but I think it's one of those small bits of polish that
need to be there if possible.

What else did you do? Did you install "nvidiabl" or any other module?

Just wondering, as this issue seems to be the last big issue for me on
