[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812]

2012-11-06 Thread Nick Andrik
Just to add something as a reply on comment #114:

Ubuntu has applied this patch already since 06 Jan 2011 all versions
till nowadays, as you can see in the changelogs here:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/xserver-xorg-core
Select Ubuntu Changellog and then search for 208_switch_on_release.diff.

Even after almost two years, there has been noone to file a bug report
that this change breaks anything. I believe this is quite a good
indication that Ilya's patch is already safe enough.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47958 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/47958

Now there is no /etc/gdm/Xsession. So is it not appropriate to adopt the
workaround as proposed in #21 ?

work so I had to go install the correct generic headers and re-install
the driver. PTL, I was not a novice and I knew how to fix this. This
exact same thing happened YESTERDAY on my TWO other ubuntu/nvidia
computers AND my friend's ubuntu/nvidia computer. This bug is a
significant problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

Following the AMD decision to change to a new driver support model for
Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 series cards as per
  http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-
  radeon_linux.aspx , fglrx-installer installs non-working drivers.
-
- NOTE: All AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0 chips are affected.
- This includes some FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain
- RadeonHD5x00 mobility parts which are rebadged RadeonHD4x00 parts. If unsure,
please consult
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

I suggest the addition of an fglrx-legacy package to install the AMD
legacy drivers for users with older cards or patch the current code base
  for use with these cards.

Public bug reported:

This is my first bug report so bear with me.

the Intel graphics that come with my Intel Processor.

I installed the workaround provided by Nick Andrik located here:

Upon reboot I experienced low graphics mode when i expected to be able
to boot into Ubuntu normally. This is coming from a fresh install of

2012-11-06 Thread Simon Strandman
I'm using the one from the repos (9.000-0ubuntu3) now. I also tried
12.11 beta from amd.com and it works too! I don't think 12.8 works on
quantal due to the newer xserver but when I used precise I got 12.8 from
amd.com.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068341] Re: No way to specify correct dependencies for dkms packages

2012-11-06 Thread Falk
Hi,

I'm sorry to add to the buzz on this bug.

I did a new clean install on 12.10 and tried the gui preferred way with
no luck.

But with some workarounds as mentioned in this bug every thing worked.

apt-get install linux-headers-generic

Then at work when I updated the system things borked again to my big
surprise?

Again, no problem with some cli work, for those of us who are used to work that
way.
But, this is a really important regression in this release imho..
Ordinary users should not have there computers broken with an routine update.

That's what we are proud of in the ubuntu community. It's always good to do an
apt-get update; apt-get upgrade..
Things just works..

So I think, that this bug should be looked at some more, before
categorizing it as a wishlist to dpkg..

Or are there only a few hw settings that gets messed up with this
problem?

--
Regards Falk

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1072672] Re: Mouse freezes from time to time. The touchpad as well as external mouse.

2012-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
2046, thank you for your comments. Regarding them
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1072672/comments/14
 :
add 1: I'm on 3.6.2-030602-generic and have removed the 3.7.0-030700rc2 So
what you want me to do is to install new mainline kernel and try it and send
the apport-collect -p linux 1072672, right?

No. What is requested is you boot into a Ubuntu kernel. For example, using
Quantal mine is:
uname -a
Linux moniker-PC 3.5.0-17-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 9 19:32:08 UTC 2012
i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

not a mainline one, and then perform apport-collect -p linux 1072672 .
Otherwise, the apport-collect will not gather the desired information.

add 2: all the test (text files) I have committed where from the
3.7.0-030700rc2 kernel.

Thank you for clarifying.

add3: nope, it's better then the mainline kernel which has unstable the whole
Xsession. In other words the problem is still present. btw I have found a post
of a guy who runs the Arch linux on the same hardware as I have without
problem.
http://zenforyen.wordpress.com/2012/07/16/experiences-with-thinkpad-l530-on-arch-linux/
 I also found this thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1076954 where they speak about the
same issue and one guy on the end mentioned: ...After a full upgrade (back to
3.2.12), everything seems to work fine with Vt-D off (including virtual box).
Turning Vt-D back on in the BIOS recreates the problem. Thanks for posting your
solution I have enabled the Intel virtualization in my BiosAccording to
this http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTAzNzk it might be a
problem. I'll try to switch the virtualization off and let you know after some
time if it freezes or not.

Please test toggling the VT-D off in BIOS and report back if this
changes anything.

Thank you for your understanding.

Mine is stuck at level 2 and never drops, which is a waste of power
since my desktop lives in flatland.

I hear tales of it getting a bit juddery at level 0, but it would be
nice to drop to level 1 without resorting to editing the Xorg file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968265] Re: Resuming from sleep leaves Xorg using 100% CPU and unable to turn on the screen

2012-11-06 Thread Simon Strandman
For me it's fine if this bug is closed since my issue is solved. But I
guess other might have the same issue? There is a very similar bug
(#881526) btw and they might also be helped by a fglrx backport. But
feel free to close this one!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068404] Re: 1002:6760 Switchable graphics on Radeon HD 6400M not working again

2012-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

After installing the latest fglrx-updates package on Ubuntu 12.10
(fglrx-updates_9.000-0ubuntu3_amd64) I have the same issue that was
present before AMD fixed switchable graphics on PowerXpress 4.0 cards
(such as my HD 6470M coupled with the intel HD Graphics 3000 of my intel
Core i5-2430M). The X server has a segmentation fault and the low
  graphics mode is activated.

As per Nick Andrik, this is a version regression of xserver-xorg-video-
intel from 2.20.2 (working and in below mentioned PPA) and 2.20.3. The
  regression commit is http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
  intel/commit/?id=05dcc5f1699ba90fc14c50882e8d4be89bc4a4f9 .

I've also seen this issue for a while now. Using NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
and Intel graphics card Optimus setup with Bumblebee and proprietary

SwapBuffersRegionNOK: invert rectangles on y axis

The EGL_NOK_swap_region2 spec states that the rectangles are specified
with a bottom-left origin within a surface coordinate space also with a
bottom left origin, so this patch ensures the rectangles are flipped
before passing them on to dri2_copy_region.

Fixes piglit's egl-nok-swap-region test.

(cherry picked from commit 0a523a8820e8a2549ac1c7887eb1892b228af44b)

this commit introduced regression.

KWin uses EGL_NV_post_sub_buffer to do partial updates. But it looks
like dri2_swap_buffers_region(), which this commit changed, is called by
both eglSwapBuffersRegionNOK() and eglPostSubBufferNV(). So this commit
fixed one entry point and broke the other.

@Christopher Penalver:

Your comment-less removal of a useful part of the bug description after
the confrontations already occurred in this bug is frankly rude. I shall
add it back with additional notes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Max Bowsher
** Description changed:

Following the AMD decision to change to a new driver support model for
Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 series cards as per
  http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-
  radeon_linux.aspx , fglrx-installer installs non-working drivers.
+
+ NOTE: It is mostly agreed that all AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0
chips are affected - if your board's chip is a member of these families, you
should consider this bug report to most likely apply to you. This includes some
FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain Radeon HD5x00 mobility
parts which are rebadged Radeon HD4x00 parts. If unsure, please consult
+ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units.
However there seems to be some question surrounding some FireStream parts
containing R7xx chips, which may still be supported by the main Catalyst driver
releases.

I suggest the addition of an fglrx-legacy package to install the AMD
legacy drivers for users with older cards or patch the current code base
  for use with these cards.

temporarily broken systems. It is not recommended for production systems or
novice users that are not comfortable with basic console/non-GUI recovery. USE
AT OWN RISK.
  WORKAROUND: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/fglrx sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get -y upgrade sudo apt-get -y install fglrx-legacy

This workaround will downgrade X to 1.12 and install the AMD legacy
  fglrx 8.97 (Catalyst 12.6).

** Description changed:

  Xorg crashes far too easily.

Just now it crashed while running disper -s (as a command shortcut).
This is not systematic. Often I run disper -s or -S without xorg crashing.

Other times xorg crashed without doing anything particular.

I experience more than a couple of xorg crashes a week, this is
  unbelievable.

Linux is known for its supposed stability. This should be on of the
topmost priorities in Ubuntu (and any linux distribution). A xorg crash
is a DISASTER, one can loose hours of work. Xorg must be rock-solid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1073933] Re: Xorg is tremendously unstable

2012-11-06 Thread matteo sisti sette
It just crashed again when running disper -s. (I run it with a
keyboard shortcut).

I can't believe this hasn't been given importance critical yet.

By the way, isn't it a deep design flaw in the very foundation of the
whole system architecture the fact that a crash of the x server implies
killing all running applications, log out the user and loose all the
current user's unsaved data

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Max Bowsher, thank you for your comments. Regarding them
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1058040/comments/42
 :
Your comment-less removal of a useful part of the bug description after the
confrontations already occurred in this bug is frankly rude.

Dave Lentz's additions to the Bug Description are unhelpful. Wikipedia
is not a primary source of information about AMD's graphics cards. For
more on this please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-
installer/+bug/1058040/comments/39 .

I shall add it back with additional notes.

Please do not re-add this information to the Bug Description.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

Following the AMD decision to change to a new driver support model for
Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 series cards as per
  http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-
  radeon_linux.aspx , fglrx-installer installs non-working drivers.
-
- NOTE: It is mostly agreed that all AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0
chips are affected - if your board's chip is a member of these families, you
should consider this bug report to most likely apply to you. This includes some
FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain Radeon HD5x00 mobility
parts which are rebadged Radeon HD4x00 parts. If unsure, please consult
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units.
However there seems to be some question surrounding some FireStream parts
containing R7xx chips, which may still be supported by the main Catalyst driver
releases according to AMD's website, though bug 1075035 contains as yet
inconclusive evidence counter to this.

I suggest the addition of an fglrx-legacy package to install the AMD
legacy drivers for users with older cards or patch the current code base
  for use with these cards.

  Output for fglrx 9.00 [1]:
  # lspci|grep VGA

   WARNING !!!
The following workaround has produced mixed results and left some users with
temporarily broken systems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1075792] [NEW] Slow Unity performance in 12.10 Quantal Quetzal

2012-11-06 Thread Austin L.
Public bug reported:

My ThinkPad T43 works quite well with Ubuntu 12.04, but with a clean
install of 12.10, Unity is slow (I can type in the Unity Dash Home and
then count the seconds as my letters slowly appear in sequence),
sometimes freezes (when I close an application, the icon becomes faded
in the Dash but doesn't disappear, and the application window just stays
on the screen but I can't interact with it), and text develops little
lines through it after suspend and resume (this was also present in
12.04 and can be fixed with a modification to the xorg.conf... something
about debug-wait... but it would be nice if I didn't have to make that
change on the whole batch of T43's I'm going to sell).

Help appreciated :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

Following the AMD decision to change to a new driver support model for
- Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 series cards as per
- http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-

I suggest the addition of an fglrx-legacy package to install the AMD

temporarily broken systems. It is not recommended for production systems or
novice users that are not comfortable with basic console/non-GUI recovery. USE
AT OWN RISK.
  WORKAROUND: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/fglrx sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get -y upgrade sudo apt-get -y install fglrx-legacy

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Max Bowsher
@ Christopher Penalver:

Why are you so very determined to make this bug's description LESS
useful for users?

I have a FirePro V5700 [RV730] which is affected by this. The
nomenclature HD2000-4000 doesn't identify this card at all. The chip
information is vastly more useful in identifying whether a given card is
likely to be affected, yet you insist on deleting it even after I
expanded the wording to document the interesting ambiguity of the
FireStreams.

I'll put my revised wording in my comment here, since you deleted it
from the description:

--
NOTE: It is mostly agreed that all AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0 chips
are affected - if your board's chip is a member of these families, you should
consider this bug report to most likely apply to you. This includes some
FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain Radeon HD5x00 mobility
parts which are rebadged Radeon HD4x00 parts. If unsure, please consult
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units.
However there seems to be some question surrounding some FireStream parts
containing R7xx chips, which may still be supported by the main Catalyst driver
releases according to AMD's website, though bug 1075035 contains as yet
inconclusive evidence counter to this.
--

As for your reluctance to refer to Wikipedia: if AMD actually provided
an official source thsat would be great. Since they don't bother,
Wikipedia is a good second best.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Marking Triaged Wishlist, as the issues surrounding this bug report have
been identified by the Ubuntu X team as per
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2012-November/001234.html .
Marking Wishlist as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance as this
is a bug that would only be fixed on a outside-contribution basis in
that AMD would need to update the legacy 12.6 driver to support XServer
1.13.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Jonathon Fernyhough
Gentlemen; please. This is a minor disagreement that is distracting from
the main issue. We know that AMD have not yet released drivers for a set
of older cards that work with Quantal (or more specifically, xserver
1.13). Let's focus on that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Max Bowsher, thank you for your comments. Regarding them
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-
installer/+bug/1058040/comments/44 :

Why are you so very determined to make this bug's description LESS
useful for users?

What I am determined to do is make sure the the information provided in
the Bug Description is accurate, and not misleading. Citing Wikipedia is
not helpful on Launchpad, especially in light of how it contradicts
AMD's own website, as discussed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-
installer/+bug/1058040/comments/39 .

I have a FirePro V5700 [RV730] which is affected by this.

You may not be in fact affected by this, but in an even more unfortunate one
off case. As per
http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.3%3b2.4.5%3b2.4.7product=2.4.7.3.3.3contentType=GPU+Download+Detailostype=Linux+x86keywords=items=20
, the last release specific for your card:
AMD Proprietary Linux x86 Display Beta Driver 8.801 Beta 1/23/2011

However, the Bug Description link
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-radeon_linux.aspx
 discusses the following hardware:
AMD Radeon HD 4000 Series
AMD Radeon HD 3000 Series
AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series
AMD Radeon HD Series AGP
AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4000 Series
AMD Mobility Radeon HD 3000 Series
AMD Mobility Radeon HD 2000 Series

The nomenclature HD2000-4000 doesn't identify this card at all.

The Bug Title could be less ambiguous. However, the Bug Description, as
noted above, does clear up what is covered. Despite this, I'll edit the
Bug Title to clear this ambiguity up.

The chip information is vastly more useful in identifying whether a
given card is likely to be affected

The information quoted from Wikipedia is not useful and is misleading.

even after I expanded the wording to document the interesting
ambiguity of the FireStreams.

No ambiguity exists on the FireStream models noted in
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalystSoftwareSuiteVersion1211BetaReleaseNotes.aspx,
and as discussed in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-
installer/+bug/1058040/comments/36 .

As well, it would be demonstrably more helpful if you could please file a new
report so we can track your hardware via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg

For more on this, please see the Ubuntu Bug Control and Ubuntu Bug Squad
article:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue

and Ubuntu Community article:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette

When opening up the new report, please feel free to subscribe me to it.

Please note, not filing a new report may delay your problem being
addressed as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071101] Re: nearly every other boot I get Low Graphics Mode message.

2012-11-06 Thread DAP
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1058040 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058040

I'm not so sure that this is a duplicate of that bug. I did not have the
proprietary drivers installed when I upgraded. This bug should have
nothing to do with the proprietary drivers.

I think this is a race condition durring boot. The last two boots were
sucessfull I think because I was continuously moving the mouse. The last
20 or so boots failed unless I disconnected the HDMI cable.
