[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1076776] Re: 12.10: Default background after logon

2013-02-02 Thread Graham
Also, Parted Magic 2013.01.29 is now showing this corrupted screen
whereas previous versions have been fine. Going by the changelog, this
may be due to the updated Xorg packages (see link below).

What I realised later was that Sitosfe was hitting the bug in libdrm-
intel that was causing it to fallback to swrast. After applying that
patch, you also need libdrm-intel-2.4.41 or just
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/drm/commit/?id=fdda97007b1dbf95beb16a0e3510fd36c89e8c33

Paul, can you update libdrm and see if the bug returns?

Finally I got some time to test that patch too. I checked out branch
`debian-unstable` from the Debian packaging Git repository [1] (based on
release 2.19.0)

commit 8ab872522ae0891b8fb52fbb31db52d581c3efa3
Author: Julien Cristau
Date: Sun Sep 16 20:47:05 2012 +0200

Upload to unstable

and applied the following patch on top of it.

commit f49c3cacd25ffb78ccfff49b001ba89375044145
Author: Chris Wilson
Date: Thu Jan 10 19:14:21 2013 +

intel: Throttle harder

Limited testing shows that the glyph corruption is gone. Unfortunately
performance seems to be slower too. That means for example maximizing a
window it does not happen instantly and I can see how it is redrawn. So
basically the same behavior with `"DebugWait" "true"`, if I remember
correctly.

No I'm not able to reproduce this using totem.
My system never experience this issue before.
Never experienced freeze in Raring developement.
Describing better, initially I've noted the freeze of Unity, but X was working,
then after some seconds, Unity and compiz wasn't working (launcher and windows
borders disappeared as showed in the attached screenshot).
Also I've noted this in .xsessionerrors:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990617] Re: Shift + Fx key combination doesn't work

2013-02-02 Thread Gertjan Halkes
I had the same problems using both GTK+ 2 and 3 programs. This is a bug
in the GTK+ libraries, which has been solved in later versions. See the
following commits:

GTK+ 3:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=314b6abbe8d8daae1e2de50b15cc9b6553af1f3d

GTK+ 2:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?h=gtk-2-24&id=1533e67ae40d938a6ee805eab5581922f4b97459

Ubuntu 12.10 uses GTK+ versions 2.24 and 3.6, which already include
these patches. Please apply these patches to the GTK+ libraries in
Ubuntu 12.04, such that GTK+ programs which use shift+function key in
their key bindings are useful again.

Public bug reported:

On my laptop, Acer Aspire 7520 with a Geforce 8400m G graphics card I
can't get the nvidia driver working correctly: this driver crashes my
system (brings it to a total freeze, not abililty to start another
session or reboot) totally at least 3 times a day.

With Nouveau drivers it seems to work fine, but after some time, I get
artefacts in programs, on the desktop and the unity bar. It gets
unusable very fast.

Restarting X solves the problem, but causes (obviously) a restart of all
running apps.

I have added x-edgers ppa instead of the regular source, but this brings
only a very slight improvement (at least so it seems),

Well, I have includes a screenshot of my messed up desktop.

I have seen that this was a problem in the past as well (found some bug
reports for plain vanilla debian).

Precise: Remove any and all fglrx*-updates and fglrx*-experimental
packages THEN install fglrx. Trying to do both together gives your
computer a fit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1113454] Re: Artefacts with nouveau driver

Forgot to mention that I'm using Ubuntu 12.10. This is a fresh install
as upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 made my computer completely useless
(almost immediate freeze with nouveau or nvidia drivers).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1005573] Re: Apport should not present the user with non-actionable information

This is very annoying to end users! Just like Windows crash reports, totally
useless.
Let's make all this transparent and automatic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1113667] [NEW] Raring video crash during install, old intel 82845G Brookdale chipset

2013-02-02 Thread Stan Young
Public bug reported:

old intel 82845G Brookdale chipset.
During Raring install, I tried the Install option from the install screen. When
asked if I have 5.4 GB hd space for install, I select continue... system drops
to a black and white text screen, system locks, must turn off the machine and
start over.
I am using LUBUNTU now to send this report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1113678] [NEW] X server starts with brightness at lowest possible level (off!) in raring

2013-02-02 Thread Mike Heald
Public bug reported:

On my Leveno Y580, when the display manager starts, the screen
brightness is set to the lowest possible level. On this laptop, it means
the backlight is totally off, so you get nothing on screen at all.

Turning up the brightness with hotkeys works, but this has to be done on
every boot, and it appears to the user that the display is not working
at all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1113331] Re: Graphics driver fails to load following upgrade

2013-02-02 Thread Ken Sharp
No, I'm in Precise and had fglrx-updates installed. Ran a dist-upgrade and now
it doesn't work.
Purged that and installed fglrx and the problem has gone away.

The older version of fglrx-updates added... I don't know but it reported
my graphics card correctly when using glxinfo, fglrx doesn't.

2013-02-02 Thread FEDENOOIJ
Public bug reported:

Upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10
All looked fine. No problems. Worked quite fast.
Tried to suspend from menu top right.

Since that suspend command machine very very slow.
Command screen cannot be closed as soon as I click the X at left upper side.
Then whole machine frozen.
Cannot work with this system as it is to slow and after some time the machine
does not respond at all. Have to reboot manually by pressing more then 4
seconds on start button of the machine.
Have searched many sites on internet for solution but could not find it.
In case you want to forward an email to me: email address is:
fedeno...@hotmail.com
Awaiting your answer.
Best regards,

I applied the commit you mentioned on top of

libdrm (2.4.40-1~deb7u2) sid; urgency=low

and rebuilt the package. Unfortunately I think there is no difference.
The glyph corruption is still gone but it is also still slow, so swrast
still might be used.

How can I check, what is used, without `glxinfo` installed? I could not
spot anything useful in `/var/log/Xorg.0.log`.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745608]

2013-02-02 Thread Chris Wilson
Basically inspect 'sudo perf top' for pixman functions. There is a slim
chance you trigger bug 59711 (as in I have no idea what that is
about...) and end up with something in the Xorg.log.

It's a Denial-of-Service. There's a limited address space for mmapping
of buffers, so that if the client does leak, eventually we will not be
able to map a new buffer and it will remain blank. (KDE is full of such
examples, or at least one sufficiently common one.)

We've harden the kernel to recover as much of that space as possible,
but that is limited by the guarantees given by the userspace API. On the
other side, it is possible to use alternative fallback methods if the
mmapping fails, that hardening is present in SNA. Nevertheless, the
side-effects will remain unpleasant until the source of the bug is
found.

This report shows that you have an unofficial version of the libdrm-
nouveau1a package installed from a ppa. You will need to downgrade to an
official version if this package first, then upgrade the system.

** Changed in: libdrm (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-02 Thread BotonChou
Same problem bothers me almost every hour.

Here is my situation and what I found.

CPU: i7-2600
GPU: AMD HD 7850 Gigabyte (using FGLRX driver)
Motherboard: ASRock Z68 pro 3
RAM: 8GM
2TB HDD + 120GB Intel SSD
Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-36-generic

No other TTYs can be started "using Ctrl + Alt + F1, F2..."
, and mouse and keyboard was locked too.

Bu ,"Everything" seems to be keep running while the screen freeze.
I can still listen to music through USB while the screen freezes.
And today i found i can even remote log in using Macbook Air within the LAN.
I can 'ls', 'vim', and 'ls -tnl /var/log'...
I couldn't find anything happened at the time.
and I EVEN tried 'sudo reboot' !! It WORKED for me !!

I think the only three things freeze and crashed is "screen", "mouse",
"keyboard"
(I re-plug my mouse usb and insert again, nothing happened...)

For anyone annoyed by this problem, try remote login and sudo reboot to
avoid hard reboot, and I hope this could rule out some possibilities
when debugging. Thx.
