[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1053959]
Hi Chris, I'm afraid I don't understand the protocol/library/guarantees well enough to interpret what you're saying with 100% confidence. The behaviour that I'm seeing is not consistent with one app DOSing itself. Chromium goes black, I restart Chromium (with the same tabs open), it's still black. I kill and restart the X server, restart Chromium again (with the same tabs open), and now it works again (for ~8-24 hours until the same thing happens again). I think you're saying that individual clients are allowed to allocate pixmaps out of the (very) limited mmaped space that is video RAM for this card and shared between app apps. And it's possible for a client to leak this space (it seems that maybe AWN or some of its applets does this), which eventually results in a DoS for other X apps (gnome- terminal, chromium) and makes the desktop unusable. My view is that if clients can do this, it represents a violation of X's responsibility to maintain stability of the desktop for all clients, in a way that doesn't seem to be consistent with the behaviour of X's behaviour with any other graphics driver. If clients can quite easily exhaust that resource, I don't think they should be allowed to allocate it at all. Why does the X server allow clients to allocate direct mapping pixmaps? What if the X server managed the graphics card's mapped memory, and decided for itself which pixmaps are actually mapped into the limited space available? One of the reasons that I prefer X over for example Windows is that it has always tried to protect itself against badly behaved apps crashing the desktop. If that is no longer the case, it annoys me quite a bit. Do you think this is a deeper bug in X that needs to be fixed? Cheers, Chris. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1053959 Title: Corrupt display after a while (after resume?) on intel graphics To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1053959/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1115358] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in raise()
Perhaps xserver reading xorg.conf adds just enough delay to resolve the race condition. So my bet is that what's in your xorg.conf doesn't actually matter. Try putting a 1 sec sleep into your lightdm config as described in the above bug and remove your xorg.conf, and I bet it'll work then too. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1115358 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in raise() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1115358/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

And, can you try seeing if doing those steps again cause it to crash in the same way again? ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium => High ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1112699 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in RRSetChanged() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1112699/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1115358] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1111446] Re: [nexus7] Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in in ??()
The EQ overflowing just means the GPU wasn't taking commands, that's a pretty generic error message when the display system fails. Unfortunately the retracer isn't providing symbols to tell us where it crashed. Perhaps the next action for this is to repro the crash and connect to it with gdb manually to collect a stack trace. Install -dgb packages until all the stack symbols are shown, so probably xserver-xorg-core-dbg, libdrm*-dbg, maybe mesa dbg. If the error is in the video driver, you'd need tegra dbg symbols but since that's proprietary I don't think we have them. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446 Title: [nexus7] Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in in ??() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-nexus7/+bug/446/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

@Ken: the next step is figuring out why the kernel module doesn't build. Step 1 - This procedure should "reset" your graphics configuration: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Quantal_Installation_Guide#Removing_Catalyst.2Ffglrx Step 2 - Reboot, and you should be back to the default open-source radeon driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1115177] Re: X fails to start - [drm] failed to set drm interface version
Ah actually, a bit of googling for the error message showed that this is probably https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdrm/+bug/982889 Essentially, lightdm tries to start up X before the kernel drm driver has finished initializing. Or, perhaps, it is in a race condition with plymouth (disabling splash in the kernel boot command can test this to verify or disprove). >From dmesg: [ 18.208298] [drm] Initialized nouveau 1.1.0 20120801 for :01:00.0 on minor 0 >From Xorg.0.log: [18.207] Initializing built-in extension DRI2 So, it looks to me like DRI2 was initialized before the Nouveau DRM was ready. For some workarounds, see the above bug link. I'm not sure there is much we can do on the X side, I think we would need to make sure X is not started until the kernel has reported DRM ready (I was under the impression we already had such a check in place, but given that bug 982889 is still open, maybe not?) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1114520] Re: Graphical Wine applications fail to load
@Steve: the main version of fglrx should not change after Ubuntu is released (i.e. fglrx-installer should remain at 8.960 for Precise and the only updates to it should be packaging fixes). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999645] Re: Freeze with unity 3d (12.04)
This bug, or one very similar, also affects me. The freeze only occurs when using dash. The mouse pointer still moves but nothing responds and the rest of the screen including clock, pannel, dash, all programs, etc are frozen. HOWEVER, Ctr+Alt+F1-7 still work to open other tty's. The quick workaround that works for me is to kill compiz like so. 1) Press Ctrl+Alt+F3 2) Log in to a terminal 3) type ps -A | grep compiz and make note of the process id (pid) 4) type kill (pid) replacing (pid) with the process id of compiz for your session eg. kill 1274 5) Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 You should be returned to your desktop which will be missing a panel, dash, etc. These will automatically reload in a few moments. P.S. The following command could be substituted for steps 2 and 3. I have made it into a bash script called killcompiz sudo kill $(ps -A | grep compiz | awk '{ print $1 }') -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/999645 Title: Freeze with unity 3d (12.04) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/999645/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1111853] Re: Smooth (per-pixel) scrolling unavailable on X230 touchpad
** Description changed: - This is the same hardware as in #1042069, but is a different issue. + This is the same hardware as in bug 1042069, but is a different issue. Two-finger and edge scrolling work correctly in both horizontal and vertical directions. However, there doesn't appear to be any smooth/pixel scrolling: scrolling actions still register as "clicks" of the mouse wheel and there don't appear to be any smooth-scrolling axes. It should be noted that I'm using the workaround in comment #5 in the above bug (copied below), but smooth scrolling is not present without the configuration either. It may just be a detection issue: I haven't booted Windows on this laptop since I purchased it, but per-pixel scrolling did work there, and it worked on my previous laptop with a Synaptics touchpad. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1115177] [NEW] X fails to start
Public bug reported: Fresh install of 13.04 dev on this desktop machine with an Nvidia graphics. Nouveau only shows the "system is running in low-graphics mode" dialog and doesn't allow reconfiguring. Nvidia-current drivers give a desktop but X crashes very often. 12.04 worked just fine on this setup. So I consider this a regression.
