I tried use the kernel linux-image-3.2.0-32-generic-pae, it's OK. I mean
I only changed the kernel, so I think linux-image-3.2.0-39-generic-pae

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Cairo-dock-team] [Bug 1127281] Re: Artifacts when scrolling

2013-04-05 Thread Fabounet
I think we should first report a bug the Intel drivers devs, because if I'm
not mistaken, it only happens to people having an Intel graphic card.
Then, it would be useful to test with another WM than Compiz (so for
instance Gnome-shell or Metacity, or even KDE).
Also, does Opera use GTK ? it could also be a common point.

2013/4/4 Matthieu Baerts matt...@gmail.com

 @Dmitry: thank you! :)
Is it maybe possible to quickly test the latest Raring daily build in
order to know if we have to remove this feature only for Ubuntu Precise
(and if there is a bug in the video drivers)?

@fabounet: or maybe should we remove the use of XCompositeRedirectWindow
for everybody? (I didn't find so much details about this function :-/ )

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-04-05 Thread Felix
OK, i know, this bug should be stopped posting to but i could kind of
workaround it:

A PC i am responsible for was crashing with 12.04 and 12.10 every hour
nearly. What solved it for me:

1) Updated to raring ringtail (upcoming 13.04), kernel 3.8.x. (Why is raring
THAT stable right now? It works really well here! But pls keep in mind its
pre-beta. Though with this crashes here, you should be good to go for an
upgrade ;-) )
2) Updated firmware on the harddrive (a SSD in my case)
3) flashed new bios (ASROCK mini itx mainboard h61m-itx)

In case you follow the steps, choose 3) 2) 1), cause updating the
frmware on the SSD might erase your data.

It was a rage-upgrade (PC was close to forced death), i did not have
the patience to update one-by-one to see what was the reason.

Good luck everyone, the Linux here is now rock solid again!

2013-04-05 Thread Oliver Grawert
oh, and i wonder if instead of breaking xinit for the users that use it
by dropping the dep or demoting xterm to x-terminal-emulator if we could
probably just get away with not shipping it at all on the desktop
(indeed that gets us in debugging hell where users are asked to run
startx to produce a log etc, but we could just document that you have to
install xinit in such cases)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999191] Re: X crashes with gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11

2013-04-05 Thread G.C. Hassink
My former note that the system is stable now is not correct.
Meanwhile I was able to file a new report by executing the following in a
terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg
It was filed under https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1161102
So please ati radeon xpress 200m users subscribe to that bug if you have it.
My current workaround is using Unity-2d. It is stable for days now but a bit
slow on the graphics unfortunately.

Well, in the meantime I did create a new bug report for the freezes with

#1161088

I did re-use this bug as those Sandy Bridge i915 drm hangs system

same bug on Ubuntu 11.10...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1164761] Re: Unity interface freezes very often (i915 video driver)

2013-04-05 Thread Răzvan Sandu
Thanks ! :)

@Chris Wilson
There is no problem for me to MANUALLY collect the necessary files or logs
(without apport).
Please tell me what exact files do you need for debugging (or point me to a
piece of documentation that does so).

Best regards,
Răzvan

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1164761] Re: Unity interface freezes very often (i915 video driver)

2013-04-05 Thread Chris Wilson
Start with /var/log/Xorg.0.log after the hang but before rebooting (try
switching to a virtual terminal, or remotely logging in). That should
mention a GPU hang, and so /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state is
the key bit of information for post-mortem debugging.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1104529] Re: Screen brightness does not work properly on samsung chronos 7

2013-04-05 Thread Luis Sanjuán
FWIW

Mine is a different Samsung machine (NP900x3d), my Ubuntu version is
12.10. I've tried with/without acpi_backlight=vendor .

More precisely this is my current boot command line:

luis@sams9:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-26-generic root=... ro quiet splash
i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 vt.handoff=7

(The i915* options are my own customizations)

The output:

* with acpi_backlight=vendor added (Fn key combination does not work):

[ 5.613] (--) intel(0): found backlight control interface
/sys/class/backlight/samsung

* without acpi_backlight=vendor, as it is in the referred /proc/cmdline
(Fn key combination works):

[ 5.097] (--) intel(0): found backlight control interface
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0

The weird thing is that acpi_backlight=verdor worked when BIOS was in
UEFI mode. I've changed this to CSM mode after some research about the
infamous firmware bug:

http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/22855.html

Unfortunately I cannot provide more info for the UEFI mode.

The main advantage of using the samsung interface is that the minimum
brightness threshold is lesser than in the native acpi_video interface,
the former allows to dim completely the screen with the corresponding
gaining in power saving.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1164876] Re: KDE daemon crashes on wakeup from suspend

2013-04-05 Thread Oliver-henshaw
This fix is mainly important for
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=310317 - the xserver bug may also
help trigger the crash bug linked above. Ubuntu 13.04 has sufficiently
new xorg-server packages to have the fix, it's just 12.10 that needs
attention.

** Bug watch added: KDE Bug Tracking System #310317
   https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=310317

** Package changed: ubuntu = xorg-server (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1164963] [NEW] Inclusion of a patch to this driver

2013-04-05 Thread Adam Rees
Public bug reported:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTA5Mzk

Aparently the patch mentioned in the link has been included in 12.10,
however I am restricted to 12.04. Can the patch be applied to the
package and applied to 12.04?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Until you actually test with more recent drivers, then you are not going
to gain any traction with me investigating whether this a bug in the
users of XComposite versus a bug in the driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1165067] [NEW] Multiple monitor configuration fails in 13.04

2013-04-05 Thread jasonmartens
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 beta 2, and on reboot unity froze.
After some trial and error, I was able to narrow it down to my dual-
monitor configuration.

Using the attached monitors.xml configuration, the display will freeze
after logging in from lightdm. However, if I remove monitors.xml, then
follow this process I can get a working dual-screen configuration for
the session, that then breaks the next time I reboot.

1. Launch the Displays utility
2. Switch the HDMI1 (dell 22 monitor) off
3. Change the resolution from the default 1680x1050 on the HDMI3 monitor
(samsung 23) to 1920x1080.
 - This causes the screen to become distorted, but you can still sort of see
what's going on
4. Pick a lower resolution than 1920x1080 and apply it
5. Switch back to 1920x1080, this time it works
6. Turn the HDMI1 monitor back on, at it's default resolution

At this point, the system is working with both monitors at their native
resolution.

This is some kind of regression from 12.10, since it worked fine there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1165080] [NEW] Ubuntu 12.04 X fails to start after kernel 3.2.0-39 update

2013-04-05 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

Since kernel 3.2.0-39 update X.org fails to start with with following Fatal
Server Error:
[18.148] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[18.148]
Fatal server error:
[18.148] no screens found

Everything works as expected when I boot back to the 3.2.0-38 kernel
(previous version)

I have a Dell Presision M6700 with the AMD Radeon HD 7800M Series
graphics card.

I was using the ATI/AMD proprietary FLGRX Graphics driver (post-release
updates)
In testing I have switched the the ATI Fire GL driver and the (**experimental**
beta) driver with no change.

I have attached the X.org log for both the broken 3.2.0-39 configuration
and working 3.2.0-38 configuration.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1163492] Re: mouse speed too fast at lowest level

2013-04-05 Thread gja
UnreportableReason: Please work this issue through technical support
channels first.

I have been looking through the support channels and all I could dig up
was:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1457356
http://superuser.com/questions/10200/how-to-set-the-mouse-speed-very-low-on-ubuntu
http://askubuntu.com/questions/134323/cant-slow-down-the-pointer-speed-enough

So there are definitely others who experience this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1124328] Re: *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC:7]

2013-04-05 Thread Dave Vree
There is a workaround for this issue which is to leave one of the
monitors unplugged until after login. It's lame, but it will allow one
to boot and then work within a multi-monitor setup. I get this error
with Intel Video 4000 when driving two monitors via HDMI and VGA
simultaneously.

** Description changed:

Temporarily disabiling semaphores seems to eliminate the problem. E.g.:

  $ sudo -s
  # echo 0 /sys/modules/i915/parameters/semaphores

  [Workaround]
  1. Edit your /etc/defaults/grub file.
  2. Change this line:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

  to

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash i915.semaphores=0

  3. Then run

  sudo update-grub

  4. And reboot

If you indeed have this bug, that should stop the lockups from happening.
If it doesn't, then file a new bug report.
+
+ Side Effects: Rendering throughput is dropped by 10% with SNA, or as
+ much as 3x with UXA. OpenGL performance is likely to be reduced by about
+ 30%. More CPU time is spent waiting for the GPU with rc6 disabled, so
+ increased power consumption.

When I only start 'xinit', I still get the same exact issue, so from
that I can deduct that this is most likely a problem with openchrome
exclusively.

I'm going to contact the openchrome project about this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1165194] [NEW] [sandybridge-m-gt2+] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x23002000 IPEHR: 0x0b140001

2013-04-05 Thread Bernie Hoeneisen
Public bug reported:

When using Firefox the system first hangs from time to time. Usually this
happens while scrolling.
After a while the system does not just hang, but the whole system freezes
completely; so that a hard reboot is needed.

May be related to Bug #1162073

Another side effect I observed is that certain letters (e.g. 'I') are
displayed in a strange way (firefox).

2013-04-05 Thread Seth Forshee
I've built a quantal kernel with the patch mentioned on the
freedesktop.org bugzilla. Please test to see if it resolves the issue.

http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/lp1041790/linux-3.5.0-27.46~lp1041790v201304052041/

Compiler issues are preventing me from building for raring atm, but I'll
post a raring build as soon as I am able to do so.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 896922] Re: Lenovo L520 - psmouse.c: touchpad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync and stops working for seconds

2013-04-05 Thread Jakub Orlowski
For me it first appeared on quantal, it was absolutely fine before! Using
Lenovo 3000 N100
Maybe it is a different bug and maybe its some consequenceof this one:

It is as if windows were losing focus for the pointer. i can move and click,
but the click would not have any effect, or affect the window behind. Could it
be an Xorg problem aswell?
temporary fix is to switch to virtual console and back, but it can happen up to
multiple times within a minute which is quite nasty. Sometimes it clicks
randomly, left right or center mouse-button (i.e. left and right at the same
time) or makes the pointer jump visciously.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1155431] Re: Quod Libet display disappeared after update

2013-04-05 Thread Christoph Reiter
This is a python-gobject-2 bug introduced by the fix in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pygobject-2/+bug/1129309

It's only in combination with QL 2.5 which isn't in Ubuntu. 2.5.1 has a
workaround and will be released soon.
Possible workarround: use the QL unstable PPA.

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) = quodlibet

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1165232] [NEW] Openchrome (1:0.3.1-0ubuntu1) crash system after start X

2013-04-05 Thread Rodrigo Miguel
Public bug reported:

When you start Ubuntu / Xubuntu / Lubuntu 12:10 or 13:04 (Beta), the
system hangs before loading the graphical environment (system freezes
with the screen totally black).

My video device:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN896/VN896/P4M900
[Chrome 9 HC] (rev 01)

The Ubuntu installation is only possible using the parameter xforcevesa
in GRUB from Live CD / USB. After installation you need to configure
xorg.conf to load the VESA driver and to start with the correct
resolution.

Bugs have been reported:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58409
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53307

Fixed:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53307#c21

I compiled the version of Git and solved the problem. I would ask that
the fix was included in the repositories.
