[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1302359] [NEW] Regarding screen freezing a dimming
Public bug reported: This screen dimming problem has been around Gnome Ubuntu-based distros forever, at least since around 8.x. You can search and see how far back it goes. Today, I am using ArtistX 13.04 and looked for a solution again. It still exists, I see. The dimming/freezing has no set pattern when the problem will strike, although using a browser frequently exhibits the symptoms. It drove me nuts enough that I gave up on Ubuntu years ago. Apparently, I was able to sent in an xorg report, so I hope that worked for you. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883319]
For well over a week I've been first testing the success of panning for various combinations of gfxcard, monitor and fb size in servers prior to the changes resulting in this bug report and then same for installations to which I've updated using the 94929 patch applied by Tobias Klausmann in the openSUSE build-service. Initially the only recording I did of my testing I reported here. After while I began recording in the form of screenshots accompanied by the Xorg.#.log associated with each one. These are available for perusal at http://fm.no-ip.com/SS/Xorg/ . Among them is one instance of a scaling test, 1.2x1.2 applied to a 1440x900 screen. The largest fb size I tested was 3840x2400. The newest gfxchip used was a Intel 4000 series (G41). Others used are nv11, G84, rv200, rv250, rv380, i865G, i915G i945G. The highest resolution used was 1920x1080. Total success pairs there currently is 31, of which 14 are pre-bug and 17 are server 1.16rc1. KDE3 KDE4 dominate the DEs represented. A few are IceWM and Lxde. The only outright failure so far was on i945G and 1.16rc1 on both openSUSE 13.1 13.2, but after another system/xorg updates round those inexplicable failures apparently solved themselves. Among the overwhelming number of successes are many instances of various forms of painting and mouse pointer trouble among the configurations with the largest panning areas that always goes away if panning is disabled. However, such problems are common to both old servers and DEs as well as current ones. The painting problems don't show up in any of the screenshots. Except for the comment 44 reported failure of xorg.conf* to produce expected results, WRT to bounds and sizes at least, the 94929 patch seems to be doing what it needs to do. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/883319 Title: xrandr --scale restricts area in which mouse moves To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/883319/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Public bug reported: my computer randomly freezes after i've updated from ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04. it happens mostly when i've cold-booted between ~5 minutes and 5 hours runtime. no input seems to work any more, i only can press reset. apport doesn't recognize the crash it seems. once it happened while watching a video, the sound continued, but everything else was frozen. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU
This does not appear to be exclusive to the nouveau or xorg. I've been able to reproduce it at the console by plugging in display port without X11 running. I open htop, everything looks fine. Then I plug in the display port cable and the CPU immediately shoots up to 100%. I've also loaded the intel driver (rebooting into macOS, selecting integrated driver and confirming it is running with vga_switcheroo once i reboot back into linux), and i get the exact same behavior. Note, booting with the displayport cable attached will cause the system to hang during initialization, I guess because the kworker takes 100% of the CPU. I've also had this happen with the proprietary nvidia driver loaded. This doesn't seem to have anything to do with the graphics driver, but rather the kernel itself is having a hard time with the thunderbolt port managing the display port connection. Oddly enough, this issue doesn't happen 100% of the time for me. I've had days where it didn't happen at all, and days where it is non stop. I'm running out of ideas on debugging this one, other than that the problem is almost certainly in the kernel itself, and is probably related to sketchy thunderbolt support since this never happens with just normal HDMI output. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1248256 Title: [MacBookPro10,1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1248256/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

It has happened twice so far on a recent install of Lubuntu 13.10 with a synaptics touchpad. Only changes from default touchpad configuration: syndaemon -d -t (disable touchpad tap and scroll when typing) synclient LockedDrags=1 HorizTwoFingerScroll=1 The most recent scrolling lock occurred when a PDF was loaded in Document Viewer that put some strain on the system and made it unresponsive, during which time two-finger scrolling was performed. Well I'd much prefer to use just a normal HDMI monitor, but i work at a Mac shop and i'm stuck with a cinema display... I guess the price of the cinema display might be inhibitive? How many people really buy macs to run linux on them? My guess is that this is why this bug is rated so low here. I'm setting up a debug kernel to take a look at what is spawning the kworkers later tonight based on http://engineernabendu.blogspot.ca/2013/10/tracking-linux-kworker- threads.html but I'm getting close to tossing my hands up and buying an HDMI monitor myself... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1248256 Title: [MacBookPro10,1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1248256/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

the same issue exist with my hdmi out as well... we want to use display port as hdmi has the limit of the 1080p resolution... the monitor i connect with is 2560 x 1440 http://tinyurl.com/l5bavcq ... the MacBookPro11,3 is 2880x1800 (not that i use it at that, 1600x1200 seems good enough)... perhaps it has to do with the higher resolutions as we ready for these 4k displays... i also have noted that an irq thread is null in htop and using higher then normal cpu... something like : irq48/null just below the kworker thread... and definitely thank you Dale... i can build a fedora kernel in an env and i can apply patches to test... i have no idea though about where to look in the kernel code or how to help debug... that is beyond me but can look around... where is the thunderbolt code in a vanilla kernel? cheers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU
FWIW, I've got a Dell Monitor and bug #1020221 is reporting this issue on a ThinkPad, so I don't think it's exclusively an Apple-hardware problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1034132] [NEW] [MacBook2, 1] Touchpad cursor moving in steps
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I'm on a MacBook2,1, running a fully updated Ubuntu 12.04. When using the internal Touchpad (appletouch driver), the cursor only moves horizontally or vertically. When dragging a diagonal line, the cursor will move in steps, basically rendering the builtin touchpad unusable. This issue is also described in a forum thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=813884page=6 WORKAROUND: In precise, in the second post on page 6 describes a solution. In the linux kernel, in appletouch.c, change the following two defines and recompile: Original: #define ATP_FUZZ 16 #define ATP_THRESHOLD 5 New: #define ATP_FUZZ 0 #define ATP_THRESHOLD 3 I tried this and can confirm that the touchpad is now fully usable. However, recompiling the kernel takes several hours and *all* of the disk space on my laptop. Doing this on every kernel update is just not practical. I would therefore like to ask that this be applied as a patch to the default ubuntu kernel. At the very least, please make an optional package containing the patched appletouch driver that can be selectively installed by people having this issue. ddalley, unfortunately neither your Bug Description, or the Bug Title make clear what is specifically the problem. Could you please re-word it? As well, as per http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4021#bios an update to your BIOS is available (FD). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .
