2014-04-04 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Martin: did you try with a clean session, or tried to enable the
effects? Just logging out / in doesn't do anything.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1302359] [NEW] Regarding screen freezing a dimming

2014-04-04 Thread ddalley
Public bug reported:

This screen dimming problem has been around Gnome Ubuntu-based distros forever,
at least since around 8.x.
You can search and see how far back it goes. Today, I am using ArtistX 13.04
and looked for a solution again.
It still exists, I see.

The dimming/freezing has no set pattern when the problem will strike,
although using a browser frequently exhibits the symptoms. It drove me
nuts enough that I gave up on Ubuntu years ago.

Apparently, I was able to sent in an xorg report, so I hope that worked
for you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 883319]

2014-04-04 Thread Felix Miata
For well over a week I've been first testing the success of panning for
various combinations of gfxcard, monitor and fb size in servers prior to
the changes resulting in this bug report and then same for installations
to which I've updated using the 94929 patch applied by Tobias Klausmann
in the openSUSE build-service. Initially the only recording I did of my
testing I reported here. After while I began recording in the form of
screenshots accompanied by the Xorg.#.log associated with each one.
These are available for perusal at http://fm.no-ip.com/SS/Xorg/ . Among
them is one instance of a scaling test, 1.2x1.2 applied to a 1440x900
screen. The largest fb size I tested was 3840x2400. The newest gfxchip
used was a Intel 4000 series (G41). Others used are nv11, G84, rv200,
rv250, rv380, i865G, i915G i945G. The highest resolution used was
1920x1080. Total success pairs there currently is 31, of which 14 are
pre-bug and 17 are server 1.16rc1. KDE3 KDE4 dominate the DEs
represented. A few are IceWM and Lxde.

The only outright failure so far was on i945G and 1.16rc1 on both
openSUSE 13.1 13.2, but after another system/xorg updates round those
inexplicable failures apparently solved themselves.

Among the overwhelming number of successes are many instances of
various forms of painting and mouse pointer trouble among the
configurations with the largest panning areas that always goes away if
panning is disabled. However, such problems are common to both old
servers and DEs as well as current ones. The painting problems don't
show up in any of the screenshots. Except for the comment 44 reported
failure of xorg.conf* to produce expected results, WRT to bounds and
sizes at least, the 94929 patch seems to be doing what it needs to do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1302574] [NEW] computer randomly freezes with screen coruption (Radeon HD 5750, IOMMU enabled)

2014-04-04 Thread abma
Public bug reported:

my computer randomly freezes after i've updated from ubuntu 13.10 to
14.04.

it happens mostly when i've cold-booted between ~5 minutes and 5 hours
runtime.

no input seems to work any more, i only can press reset. apport doesn't
recognize the crash it seems. once it happened while watching a video,
the sound continued, but everything else was frozen.

I didn't find something when doing normal work that always triggers
the crash.

But it crashes always, when i run qvdpautest:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1299499] Re: kwin crashes on desktop startup with wobbly windows enabled

2014-04-04 Thread Matt Ruffalo
I had reverted to a btrfs snapshot once I saw KWin crash, so this
morning I added the PPA and did an aptitude full-upgrade. This updated
my kernel to 3.13.0-22 (as well as ~500MB of other stuff) and I am very
happy to say that KWin is working perfectly.

Thank you very much, Timo!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1302406] [NEW] External monitor not found when connected a second time

2014-04-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The second time an external monitor is plugged in during the same
session, it is not automatically found.

Steps to reproduce:
 * Connect a screen to the laptop with a HDMI cable. Make sure it shows up as
an extensions of the current screen (not mirroring it)
 * Disconnect the screen
 * Connect it again (without rebooting the computer)
 * This time, the screen will not be found

Workaround:
 1. Open settings/displays, and the screen will be identified. You don't have
to press ”apply” or anything, just opening the settings is enough.
 2. Reboot the computer before attaching the external monitor the second time

Occurs in:
Ubuntu 13.10 and Ubuntu 13.04

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread Dale Hamel
This does not appear to be exclusive to the nouveau or xorg. I've been
able to reproduce it at the console by plugging in display port without
X11 running.

I open htop, everything looks fine. Then I plug in the display port
cable and the CPU immediately shoots up to 100%.

I've also loaded the intel driver (rebooting into macOS, selecting
integrated driver and confirming it is running with vga_switcheroo once
i reboot back into linux), and i get the exact same behavior.

Note, booting with the displayport cable attached will cause the system
to hang during initialization, I guess because the kworker takes 100% of
the CPU.

I've also had this happen with the proprietary nvidia driver loaded.
This doesn't seem to have anything to do with the graphics driver, but
rather the kernel itself is having a hard time with the thunderbolt port
managing the display port connection.

Oddly enough, this issue doesn't happen 100% of the time for me. I've
had days where it didn't happen at all, and days where it is non stop.

I'm running out of ideas on debugging this one, other than that the
problem is almost certainly in the kernel itself, and is probably
related to sketchy thunderbolt support since this never happens with
just normal HDMI output.

2014-04-04 Thread Brendan
Dale,

Thank you for the excellent work reproducing and tracking down this bug.
What do you think the next step should be? Is there an appropriate place
to file this as a bug against the kernel?

I'm honestly surprised it doesn't seem to be affecting more people. Are
there really so few people using external monitors over display port?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1302753] [NEW] Mouse pointer (touchpad) gets stuck

2014-04-04 Thread Plurtu
Public bug reported:

Similar to xorg Bug #991707, cursor position sometimes gets stuck and
any touchpad input only results in scrolling. It has happened twice so
far on a recent install of Lubuntu 13.10 with a synaptics touchpad.

Only changes from default touchpad configuration:
syndaemon -d -t (disable touchpad tap and scroll when typing)
synclient LockedDrags=1 HorizTwoFingerScroll=1

The most recent scrolling lock occurred when a PDF was loaded in
Document Viewer that put some strain on the system and made it
unresponsive, during which time two-finger scrolling was performed. When
the computer responded the cursor was locked and scrolling permanently
enabled. The computer had been suspended and resumed prior to this
happening.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread Dale Hamel
Well I'd much prefer to use just a normal HDMI monitor, but i work at a Mac
shop and i'm stuck with a cinema display...

I guess the price of the cinema display might be inhibitive? How many people
really buy macs to run linux on them? My guess is that this is why this bug is
rated so low here.

I'm setting up a debug kernel to take a look at what is spawning the
kworkers later tonight based on
http://engineernabendu.blogspot.ca/2013/10/tracking-linux-kworker-
threads.html but I'm getting close to tossing my hands up and buying an
HDMI monitor myself...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread page p
the same issue exist with my hdmi out as well... we want to use display
port as hdmi has the limit of the 1080p resolution... the monitor i
connect with is 2560 x 1440 http://tinyurl.com/l5bavcq ... the
MacBookPro11,3 is 2880x1800 (not that i use it at that, 1600x1200 seems
good enough)... perhaps it has to do with the higher resolutions as we
ready for these 4k displays...

i also have noted that an irq thread is null in htop and using higher
then normal cpu... something like : irq48/null just below the kworker
thread...

and definitely thank you Dale... i can build a fedora kernel in an env
and i can apply patches to test... i have no idea though about where to
look in the kernel code or how to help debug... that is beyond me but
can look around... where is the thunderbolt code in a vanilla kernel?

cheers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread Brendan
FWIW, I've got a Dell Monitor and bug #1020221
is reporting this issue on a ThinkPad, so I don't think it's exclusively an
Apple-hardware problem. You might be correct that it's a somewhat unusual setup.

I'm happy to help out, but I am a total novice when it comes to kernel
debugging. Let me know if there's anything I can contribute.

Though it's just a wrapper for:

http://lxr.free-
electrons.com/source/drivers/gpu/drm/drm_crtc_helper.c#L884

Theory:

For some reason, it is constantly toggling between DRM_MODE_DPMS_ON for
some reason.

Maybe we should report this bug against nouveau and probably the intel
drivers as they will likely have better connections to kernel
developers.

least, I can no longer reproduce it with the last given known recipe.
I'll mark this as Incomplete for now and reopen later if necessary.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread Dale Hamel
My (assumed) kernel trace:

http://lxr.free-
electrons.com/source/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nv50_display.c#L2201 -
attempts to create the display here:

http://lxr.free-electrons.com/ident?i=nouveau_connector_create

Later on in the function there is some display port related code...
wonder if it has anything to do with this.

http://lxr.free-
electrons.com/source/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nv50_display.c#L1944

anyways, nouveau_connector_create is what is scheduling the job that
keeps looping. I bet we could at least come up with a junk fix that will
stop the loop (probably with hilarious unintentional consequences)

Oohh!! Found something very interesting in this log:

drm:drm_helper_hpd_irq_event is being fired a lot, which is likely the
cause of the kernel workers?

2014-04-04 Thread Dale Hamel
The main thing I've been able to gleam is that the bug first appeared in
3.9, so I'm going to try rolling back to 3.8.13 (and earlier) to see if
that resolves the issue. It would be awesome to be able to bisect the
exact point when this issue was introduced.

Another possible (but hilarious fix) is to comment out a line as
suggested here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76732#c22

Haven't tried that one yet, but 3.8-rc6 should be clean as it is before
0a0afd282fd715dd63d64b243299a64da14f8e8d, which is the first bad commit.

I can confirm 3.8-rc6 resolves this problem.

So, if rolling back your kernel is an option I would suggest trying

Hope all this helps guys!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1034132] [NEW] [MacBook2, 1] Touchpad cursor moving in steps

2014-04-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm on a MacBook2,1, running a fully updated Ubuntu 12.04. When using
the internal Touchpad (appletouch driver), the cursor only moves
horizontally or vertically. When dragging a diagonal line, the cursor
will move in steps, basically rendering the builtin touchpad unusable.
This issue is also described in a forum thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=813884page=6

WORKAROUND: In precise, in the second post on page 6 describes a solution. In
the linux kernel, in appletouch.c, change the following two defines and
recompile:
Original:
#define ATP_FUZZ 16
#define ATP_THRESHOLD 5

New:
#define ATP_FUZZ 0
#define ATP_THRESHOLD 3

I tried this and can confirm that the touchpad is now fully usable.
However, recompiling the kernel takes several hours and *all* of the
disk space on my laptop. Doing this on every kernel update is just not
practical. I would therefore like to ask that this be applied as a patch
to the default ubuntu kernel. At the very least, please make an optional
package containing the patched appletouch driver that can be selectively
installed by people having this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1302359] Re: Regarding screen freezing a dimming

2014-04-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
ddalley, unfortunately neither your Bug Description, or the Bug Title
make clear what is specifically the problem. Could you please re-word
it?

As well, as per http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4021#bios
an update to your BIOS is available (FD). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

- This screen dimming problem has been around Gnome Ubuntu-based distros
forever, at least since around 8.x.
- You can search and see how far back it goes. Today, I am using ArtistX 13.04
and looked for a solution again.
- It still exists, I see.
-
- The dimming/freezing has no set pattern when the problem will strike,
- although using a browser frequently exhibits the symptoms. It drove me
- nuts enough that I gave up on Ubuntu years ago.
-
- Apparently, I was able to sent in an xorg report, so I hope that worked
- for you.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1302359] Re: Regarding screen freezing a dimming

2014-04-04 Thread ddalley
Hi, Christopher:

I thought I was adding to a conversation already in progress, so I don't
know why a new bug was started.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1184451

Apparently, that didn't happen the way I thought it would. I had no
intention of starting something new, so please merge my post into the
thread above.

In the meantime, I will try to do the BIOS update and see if it affects
anything, but it won't happen quickly.

Donald

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1006156] Re: Mute button on USB headset steals and holds on to mouse focus

2014-04-04 Thread Karl Tomlinson
Why not use the existing bug, which already has some analysis and possible
solution?
It sounds like the same bug.

Comment 6 and 7 seem to suggest that nothing would happen if a new bug
report were filed, anyway.

2014-04-04 Thread Brendan
For Ubuntu users, the relevant kernel packages are available here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

I haven't tested any of them yet, but I will try rolling back to a 3.8.X
kernel next week.
