[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1157120] Re: nvidia-settings-xxx : link group nvidia_settings_conf is broken (possible reason to being unable to use driver)

2014-05-07 Thread Orkun
I've the same problem but driver is nvidia-331.67 and there was 331.20
version of driver but when I updated kernel group at last Monday (I
think upgraded from 3.11.0.19 to 3.11.0.20 but I'm not sure) with apt-
get -y dist-upgrade it removed most of the xorg components after
upgrade I've reboot my laptop but desktop didn't come after i remove
nvidia-drivers and installed nvidia-current, nvidia-331.20 and 331.67
respectively and uninstall them again recpectively :| after i've install
ubuntu-desktop, xserver-xorg and desktop came again without nvidia
drivers. I tried again installing 331.67 then it's installing
successfully but when I run nvidia-settings it's giving an error message
which is You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit
your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as a root), and
restart the X server. but I've tried 9 or 10 times it's not working.
But I can run cuda deviceQuery, cuda samples, nvidia-smi [with or
without -a] these are working well. Can it be unity 2d problem this mean
nvidia-settings is not work correctly with unity 2d?

log out or restart the computer for it to work again.

The problem seems to be connected to unity. If I run a KDE session I
wasn't able to reproduce the problem, but unity just freezes after
running a while without me actively doing anything with the box (audio
was running).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-05-07 Thread Nicolas-mailhot-laposte
(In reply to comment #75)
 Nicolas,

Where does the need to *have* a key for nbsp come from?

Because unlike in English most French punctuation symbols require a
space (sometimes a short space) before. And if it's not a non-breakable
space apps will perform line breaks at the wrong position and you'll end
up with orphan sumbols at line starts

Online
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espace_ins%C3%A9cable

Actual authoritative reverence (highly recommended if you want to work on any
system with French inputs or outputs)
http://www.amazon.fr/Lexique-r%C3%A8gles-typographiques-lImprimerie-Nationale/dp/2743304820

Lack of non breakspace on French layouts on some OSes is such a basic
problem OpenOffice/LibreOffice had to hardcode a nbspc combo but that
does not help when writing in you MUA, your browser, your IM client, etc

 Isn't a compose
combo more appropriate and less error-prone?

Compose is not appropriate for basic symbols you need to write pretty
much any correct sentence in the target language. And adding a specific
input method for one symbol just because some people can't live with the
modifier ISO chose for level 5 is disproportionnate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1315156] Re: nvidia-331 selected but nouveau loads

2014-05-07 Thread Rebecca Palmer
I've found out how /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-331_hybrid.conf disappeared:
nvidia-331's postrm explicitly deletes it, but as it's a conffile
reinstalling nvidia-331 doesn't put it back. However, having it present
doesn't fix the main bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1315285] Re: [AMD Richland + Mars] Unable to switch graphics

2014-05-07 Thread Alberto Milone
Both GPUs are used by default. If you attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and
/var/log/gpu-manager.log we can see what's going on.

In any case I wouldn't expect to find any options in the AMD panel to
switch between the two GPUs. That's only available on Intel+AMD systems.

it solves the issue on both tablets and non-tablets. Maarten's work is

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1317046] [NEW] Extensive flicker on NVIDIA since yesterday's update

2014-05-07 Thread teledyn
Public bug reported:

I did an apt-get upgrade yesterday and rebooted, and since then my
desktop windows flicker on changes enough to make the system difficult
to use. For example, pop-ups on chrome will flicker between two spots
over and over and continue to flicker so long as I am typing (happening
right now on each keystroke typing here, fragments of a Chrome plugin
notification will alternate positions on each keystroke).

Also in chrome, changing tabs will cause the previous and next tab to
flicker alternating rapidly for a moment before the new selection is
set. This effect happens changing any windows so it isn't peculiar to
Chrome. I noticed also that on rebooting after the upgrade, the
settings for my two monitor display had been reset to the defaults.

Prior to the update, the window manager was working fine.

However, for most French people, standard Right-Ctrl key is more important
than Nbsp.
Especially for left-handed people who use left hand for the mouse and most
letters, and right hand for Shift, Ctrl and AltGr. A notable exception is
Alt which only exists on the left.

Anyway, it's written Ctrl on the Right-Ctrl, so it MUST behave as a
Ctrl.

Put nbsp where you want, but give us back the Right-Ctrl.

  Nicolas,

Where does the need to *have* a key for nbsp come from?

Because unlike in English most French punctuation symbols require a
space (sometimes a short space) before. And if it's not a non-breakable
space apps will perform line breaks at the wrong position and you'll end
up with orphan sumbols at line starts

Lack of non breakspace on French layouts on some OSes is such a basic
problem OpenOffice/LibreOffice had to hardcode a nbspc combo but that
does not help when writing in you MUA, your browser, your IM client, etc

  Isn't a compose
combo more appropriate and less error-prone?

Compose is not appropriate for basic symbols you need to write pretty
much any correct sentence in the target language. And adding a specific
input method for one symbol just because some people can't live with the
modifier ISO chose for level 5 is disproportionnate.

Woow, calm down guys. What's disproportionate is the reaction here!
*before* the change this report introduced, and which many of us are
trying to get reverted, *both* nbsp and nbspc were easily available:

nbsp AltGr+Shift+Space
nbspc Ctrl+Shift+Space

Reverting the change this report introduced would get this behavior.
Please understand we just want to get nbspc moved back where it *was*
(or for me, anywhere on a 1-4 level), not removed or anything. Also,
realize that currently there is only *one* Level5-specific symbol, and
that's nbspc, so we basically have a key only for that.

2014-05-07 Thread Daniel d'Andrada
I confirm that the Qt from
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-x/+archive/x-staging does
XISelectEvents on the master pointer (instead of the touchscreen slave
device, as previously) and that the resulting behavior of the xserver is
good. Ie., touch ownership mechanics work properly and mouse pointer
emluation from touch events keeps working as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1283938] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 blank screen after wakeup from sleep

2014-05-07 Thread Neill Currie
Problem solved for me:
Lenovo Ideapad s10-3 with fresh install of Lubuntu 14.04.
Wouldn't suspend from the shutdown menu, nor would it standby/suspend when the
lid was closed.
I installed xscreensaver, made sure it was set to activate after 0 mins,
inserted an entry for xscreensaver under menupreferencesdefault applications
for lxsessioncore applications, and hit reload. Rebooted to make sure, but
it now suspends from menu, and when the lid is closed.
Under /etc/default/grub I took out a nomodeset start code, but that probably
hasn't had anything to do with this as the symptoms are replicable either way,
and also fixable either way.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1315156] Re: nvidia-331 selected but nouveau loads

2014-05-07 Thread Rebecca Palmer
Found how nouveau was being loaded while blacklisted: it's in the
initramfs and nvidia-331_hybrid.conf wasn't.

This can be fixed by updating the initramfs (sudo update-initramfs -u,
assuming the kernel you are currently running is the one you want to use
nvidia-331 with), but my system also seems to have forgotten that
nvidia-* needs the text-only splash screen (bug 1063969), causing it to
drop into a low resolution graphics mode. This can be worked around by
disabling the splash screen entirely (remove splash from the kernel
command line in /etc/default/grub then run update-grub).

** Description changed:

After upgrading to Trusty, I briefly used the nouveau driver to check
whether bug 1243557 still existed; after finding that it did, I switched
  back to nvidia-331.

However since then, frequently (50% but not always), the system loads
nouveau first, then fails to load nvidia-331 because of this:

  Apr 30 08:00:29 lap14 kernel: [ 17.789267] nouveau [
DEVICE][:01:00.0] BOOT0 : 0x0d9160a1

  Apr 30 08:00:29 lap14 kernel: [ 17.789271] nouveau [
DEVICE][:01:00.0] Family : NVD0
  [...]
  Apr 30 08:00:32 lap14 kernel: [ 21.574983] NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine
was not called for 1 device(s).
  Apr 30 08:00:32 lap14 kernel: [ 21.574987] NVRM: This can occur when a
driver such as:
  Apr 30 08:00:32 lap14 kernel: [ 21.574987] NVRM: nouveau, rivafb, nvidiafb
or rivatv
  Apr 30 08:00:32 lap14 kernel: [ 21.574987] NVRM: was loaded and obtained
ownership of the NVIDIA device(s).

+ WORKAROUND: at a text terminal:
+ sudo apt-get purge nvidia-331
+ sudo apt-get install nvidia-331
+ sudo update-initramfs -u
+ sudoedit /etc/default/grub
+ #remove 'splash' from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, and save with the default
name

2014-05-07 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jennifer Cash, could you please execute the following via a terminal and post
the results:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Regarding your comments
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1309153/comments/4 :
I also want to note that I started having these symptoms while using 12.04
(but only since about January, I ran 12.04 up to that point with no issues).

Could you please comment further to your setup:
+ What version of 12.04, 12.04.1, 12.04.2, etc.?
+ Were you using the nvidia proprietary drivers? If so, which version?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1309153] Re: 10de:06fd [HP Z400 Workstation] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!

2014-05-07 Thread Jennifer Cash
'sudo dmidecode -s bios-version' gives
786G3 v03.57

'sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date' gives
07/15/2013

I believe that I was running 12.04.01 LTS, but I'm not sure how to verify that
at this point.
I can say for sure that I was using the software updates that were released
using the default Software Updater.

I think that I was using the nvidia propietary drivers. At one point I
had 304.88 as the driver. I know that I updated to a later version (I
think 331) at some point in February or March.

On 2014-05-06T15:52:38+00:00 Daniel d'Andrada wrote:

It happens on Ubuntu running on laptop with a touchscreen.

Scenario:

- There's a small window whose client called XISelectEvents on it for
the touchscreen slave device with
mask=XI_TouchBegin|XI_TouchUpdate|XI_TouchEnd (client[5290,
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qmlscene qml-demo-minimal-client.qml]
in the logs).

- compiz and nautilus (which handles the desktop background) have
selections and/or grabs on the master device

Actions:

1- user taps the qmlscene window. Touch events are reported to both
qmlscene (from the slave device) and to compiz (from the master device).
compiz rejects the touch sequence and it's not delivered to anyone else

2- user now presses on the desktop background. TouchBegin,
TouchOwnership and further TouchUpdates are sent to compiz.

3- compiz rejects the touch sequence. TouchPuntToNextOwner fails to
emulate a pointer and pass it to nautilus as it still thinks that touch
1 is active. And as per pointer emulation rules, only the oldest active
touch is used for touch emulation. From the logs, the lines are:

[ 9223.917] (II) TouchPuntToNextOwner: touch 2
[ 9223.917] (II) - Not all older pointer emulated touches have
been seen yet. Oldest touch(client_id=1, active=1, pending_finish=0,
emulate_pointer=1).

4- user lifts his finger

So that scenario on touch 1 clearly left xserver in an inconsistent,
buggy, state.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1286372] Re: In Lubuntu, Synaptics touchpad double-tap to open works badly

2014-05-07 Thread John Hupp
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1286326 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1286326

It seems that the synclient MaxDoubleTapTime setting (or setting
MaxDoubleTapTime in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d\50-synaptics.conf) does
not govern the Synaptics double-tap.

Instead, the Synaptics touchpad is responding to a GTK2 setting.in which
the default double-tap time is 250 ms.

To change that per-user (and there is probably a global setting somewhere --
wish I knew where), create ~/.gtkrc-2.0 with the content like:
   gtk-double-click-time=400
though values up to 1000 are sometimes suggested.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-05-07 Thread Remi
I'm at a loss as to what to do to help find a solution for everyone.

fr-oss is a great layout with many useful improvements over fr-latin9,
but the missing ControlR is a deal breaker. I'm personally back to using
the default fr layout and I'll advise users to do the same if they
want their ControlR back.

@Ubuntu users listening in through Launchpad: use whatever control panel
you have to select a layout that doesn't have the words Alternative or
variante.

Cheers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1283938] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 blank screen after wakeup from sleep

2014-05-07 Thread Yasser López
Maybe they are actually several bugs. And I don't know if this is
important but when I wake my laptop from suspend:

1) No matter if I have xscreensaver installed or not, the screen keeps as if it
was off and everything else seems to be working.
2) I can wake my laptop with ANY KEY.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1317316] [NEW] Ubuntu 14.04 intermittent screen or window freeze

2014-05-07 Thread timelf123
Public bug reported:

Having the same issue as everyone else in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1184451

CTRL-F1 and then back to CTRL-F7 works sometimes.

Either the whole screen freezes (clock stuck, mouse/kb frozen --
requires a force reboot) OR a single window freezes for 5-30 seconds
while other processes are working.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1289860]

2014-05-07 Thread Gquigs+bugs
Closing cause I switched video cards.. and it seems like the system
requirements for NS2 were higher than an HD 3870 anyway.
