X screen blanks after timeout, but backlight remains on forever. xset
dpms force off has no effect. vbetool dpms off does turn off the
backlight. Using nvidia proprietary driver, xset dpms force off turns
off backlight but then has other issues (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-331/+bug/1268151 )

Curiously, and possibly related, xset s activate (via ssh and/or using
sleep 1) has no effect. It does not blank the screen.

Possibly related, from Xorg.0.log:

[27.193] (II) NOUVEAU(0): No DPMS capabilities specified

version: nouveau from kernel 3.16.6-gentoo.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

2014-11-17 Thread Celian
Can confirm that upgrading to 3.14 according to the instructions written
here has seemingly fixed the issue for me:

http://www.webupd8.org/2014/10/how-to-install-gnome-314-in-ubuntu.html

Everything seems very responsive right now, vlc, rhythmbox, chrome,
firefox, gedit and terminal.

Cannot say however what other consequences this may have had..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1278223] Re: Mouse Flickering after adding 3rd Monitor

2014-11-17 Thread Ian Mann
UBUNTU 14.04LTS Desktop

Three displays, two NVIDIA graphics cards, not the same type of card,
two different ones.

Two monitors on one card, 1 monitor on another card HDMI.

The two monitors on the one card are the ones that exhibit cursor
flicker with the default drivers out of the box.

If I add NVIDIA driver, the two monitors on the one card work fine, no
flickering, but I cannot set up third monitor to run!

I also noticed the flickering is more prevalant if I am playing a catch
up TV video in a browser. I think the video stream makes the problem
worse. If I PAUSE the video, the flickering cursor reduces
significantly. One I start the stream again the cursor flickers
significantly.

Hope this helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1393412] [NEW] Touchpad freezes XServer when using multifingers

2014-11-17 Thread Fethi DILMI
Public bug reported:

On MSI GT60-20C with Ubuntu 14.10, the touchpad freezes the XServer when
combining LeftClick + Tap, or multifinger taps.

As a workaround, I was partly initializing the XServer by performing a
Ctrl+Alt+F1 then a Ctrl+Alt+F7. The touchpad continues to work after
this.

I tried to dig deeper into the problem, so when the XServer freezed
again, I continued to move the cursor to a known place, I performed
after my Ctrl+Alt+F1/F7 combination, and found the cursor in a different
place after freezing. This actually means that when the XServer freezes
it only stops rendering the place of the cursor.

I got an idea, and installed Gnome Pointing Devices; I changed the
settings of Vertical/Horizontal scrolling and the problem seemed to
disappear up till now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-11-17 Thread Bryan
Hi Pierre. Unfortunately I don't know what is going on here. The only
thing I can think of is that maybe some dev packages are missing,
although this is not how I would expect that kind of failure to look.
What I can say is that the code your compiler is complaining about was
not something I changed. Perhaps try building a vanilla version of the
driver first (download the source from
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/x/x7driver.html#xorg-
synaptics-driver).

Once that is building correctly, go back and try my modified version.
There should be more people able to help you get the vanilla version
building. I hope you are successful.

Bryan

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working

2014-11-17 Thread JB
Bug affects me too. I have installed Mint on a Dell Latitude E7440. Mint
16 (based on Ubuntu) worked perfectly for a few months (even if mouse
was very sensitive) then the left button started not responding. Now it
responds for a few minutes when I log in and then start not to work
anymore. Plus, sometimes random click seem to occur and it seems that
the left button is always engaged, resulting in selection of everything
(files etc) I go over. I have tried to install a more recent version of
Mint as well as Unbuntu and none of those work. Not a hardware pb as
similar pb with external mouse and mouse + touchpad work perfectly on
Windows on the same comp. I am stuck and cant use linux only software
that I need for my work. Bug is of high priority at least to me :{

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1175910] Re: ubuntu does not finish booting to login

2014-11-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Martin Wolf, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Raring reached EOL on
January 27, 2014.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Just to clarify, a bug in the upstream fglrx would only be supported by AMD, as
it's not from a Ubuntu repository. However, if one uses the one that came with
the Ubuntu repository, then this is supported here in Ubuntu. Hence, is this an
issue in a supported release with the repository version? If so, could you
please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging
information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 1175910

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes
button for attaching additional debugging information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173492] Re: XRandR cannot set scaling mode

2014-11-17 Thread Dave Long
In my case the root cause of this issue was corrupted firmware rather
than problems with XRandR (X11-xserver-utils). The machine in question
had been running lm sensors 3.3.2 which was discovered to potentially
cause firmware corruption in Sept 2013.

The issue was immediately resolved following a re-flash of the BIOS on
the T60 in question.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1340739] [NEW] Video tearing when rotated second screen is set

2014-11-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a dual monitor setup - one regular, one rotated.

All seems to be well on the regularly oriented monitor, however on the
rotated one, there is significant video tearing when dragging windows -
which is worse when done vertically.

I have tried with 14.04, and I am using Haswell HD4600.

Unfortunately the problem renders me unable to use Ubuntu, as smooth
scrolling is important for my work. Any pointers very much appreciated.

Another instance from someone else:

2014-11-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
manfromthezoo, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect 1340739

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes
button for attaching additional debugging information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1354841] [NEW] Screen corruption (characters are drawn as black squares)

2014-11-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Sometimes, the characters are rendered as black squares (cf attachment). I
couldn't find any event in the systems logs that could explain that.
I can stop the bug by changing the anti-aliasing options in the system
settings (enabled / disabled, level of hinting) and restarting the
applications, but the squares can come back later on, and I have to repeat the
operation.

The bug almost exclusively happens with firefox and thunderbird, though
krunner is also affected (but not other kde apps). I'm not using many
GTK applications, but I can also see the bug with unison.

It used to happen in 13.10 as well, and upgrading to 14.04.1 hasn't
improved the situation

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1393412] Re: Touchpad freezes XServer when using multifingers

2014-11-17 Thread Fethi DILMI
** Description changed:

I got an idea, and installed Gnome Pointing Devices; I changed the
settings of Vertical/Horizontal scrolling and the problem seemed to
  occur less up till now.
+
+ EDIT: It happened again, I was watching a video, the video continued to
+ play but the compositor stopped rendering the screen. I am running the
+ proprietary driver of NVidia on my OS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1381296] [NEW] Dragging app between workspaces freezes system

2014-11-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If I start Firefox in, say, workspace 2 and I drag it to workspce 1, the
system freezes.

The only way out that I have discovered is to use ctrl-alt-f1 to get a
pseudo terminal, log in, then execute shutdown -r now

This happens often. Workspaces work fine if I do not attempt to drag
apps between workspaces.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1381296] Re: Dragging app between workspaces freezes system

2014-11-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Alan Westhagen, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please run the following command in the
development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg 1381296

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes
button for attaching additional debugging information.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-11-17 Thread Cihan Altinay
Bryan,
Would you mind posting a patch file so that we can apply to distribution source
packages? That would make it easy to migrate your changes to other versions of
the driver...

Cheers!
