[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1468834] Re: lightdm does not source .xsession

2015-06-25 Thread Derek Martin
I don't follow the reason for closing this... It seems like maybe you're
thinking I said this bug is all wrong, but it's not. The point is that
instead of *sourcing* $HOME/.xsession, the Xsession system script should
*exec* it if it exists, completely bypassing the rest of the system
Xsession script. The debian manual I linked to actually describes that
behavior. The point is, Ubuntu appears to ignore it entirely.

2015-06-25 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Now it sounds as if you are mostly talking about the use of ~/.profile.
But sure, the lack of cross-distro standards is sad. That's true for
other things but config files, btw.

Anyway, I noticed this comment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1468832/comments/7

So closing this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1465479] Re: Palm detection does not work on synaptics touchpad

2015-06-25 Thread gobble
I found the resolution to this bug lies in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-settings-daemon/+bug/1351772
I wonder why the issue is not yet resolved if it is so easy to fix? A new user
should ideally get a flawless experience out of the box on newly purchased
hardware rather than spend weeks frustrated about simple things. No wonder that
Windows rules the market.

Please close this bug report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1468834] Re: lightdm does not source .xsession

2015-06-25 Thread Derek Martin
It may well have, but it's a change that's bad. For what it's worth,
the Debian manuals still document this:

  https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-
reference/ch07.en.html#_customizing_the_x_session_classic_method

I've been a member of the Linux community for 20 years--Take comfort in
the fact that these shell scripts have often changed rather arbitrarily
over the years on many different distributions, and the owners of those
changes seemingly do not understand the consequences of the changes they
have made.

This stuff was designed this way for a reason... It's supposed to make
it easy for the user to customize their X window system session
regardless of what shell they use or how they have their environment set
up. This change is one of several that actually work against that goal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1468834] Re: lightdm does not source .xsession

2015-06-25 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
To me it looks like lightdm does the right thing in /usr/sbin/lightdm-
session.

According to the files in /etc/X11/Xsession.d, which belong to
x11-common, the intended behavior seems to be to not source ~/.xsession.
Which standard protocol are you referring to? Are you possibly mixing it
up with ~/.xsessionrc, which is sourced by lightdm if it exists?

2015-06-25 Thread Steve Beattie
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fails to start after installing the hardware enablement stack on precise due to missing symlink after purging old xserver-xorg

2015-06-25 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Hmm, this may have been fixed now in the upcoming 14.04.3 LTS HWE
upgrade, can anyone confirm?

That is, after purging the configuration files of -utopic packages, the
link /etc/X11/X is removed but system continues to work.

I upgraded by temporarily enabling trusty-proposed updates and sudo apt
install --install-recommends libgles2-mesa-lts-vivid libglapi-mesa-lts-
vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-vivid libegl1-mesa-lts-
vivid libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-vivid:i386

2015-06-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
foobar, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a bug report so we are closing it. We understand the difficulties you
are facing, but it is better to raise problems and general inquiries you
are having in the support tracker at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are
software bugs. You can also find help with your problem in the support
forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking
at http://askubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org. For help on
reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1466235] Re: Xorg crash

2015-06-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
akeraj ali, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

As per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-
support/product/inspiron-15-3542-laptop/drivers an update to your
computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A06). If you update to
this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it
change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status New.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1465892] Re: xorg 1:7.7+7ubuntu4

2015-06-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Mohamed El-Defrawy, thank you for taking the time to report this and
helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, this report didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs . We'd be grateful if you would
then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. The behavior you expected, and
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thank you for your understanding.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1468664] [NEW] Libreoffice crashing the whole session in 15.04

2015-06-25 Thread Patrik Bubák
Public bug reported:

I've looked around but couldn't find any bug post related to this issue,
so I'm posting a new.

Libreoffice is known to crash the entire session on certain AMD
configurations, mine happens to be one of them.

AMD A6-6310 APU w/ AMD Radeon R4 and R5 M230 graphics.

Libreoffice worked perfect on 14.04.2 last time I checked, on 15.04 it's
unusable due to the crash.

Whenever it happens I get a drm;radeon_acpi error stating "could not
find backlight controller" and the whole session crashes.
