[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1243642] Re: .Xmodmap not automatically loaded on start

2016-02-23 Thread Timo Aaltonen
this annoys me enough so that I want at least a somewhat hacky thing
installed by default..

usecase; remap a single key on US layout kbd so that I can use FI still
being able to get "<>|"

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557829] [NEW] 1002:9613 [Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5959] overheats computer

2016-02-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Lucid Lynx 10.04 AMD64 Beta 1

xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2

AMD AthlonTM X2 Dual-Core QL-65 @ 2.1GHz (running stock speed, Cool 'n' Quiet
working, cpu frequency regulation in kerenel is working, idles @ 1.05GHz but
temperature still goes up)
AMD M780V Chipset
ATI Radeon 3100 IGP (RV610)
720P video native support (I suppose that means hardware implemented)

Laptop (Toshiba L305D-S5959) overheats when running open source driver.
Idles at around 70°C at room temperature of ~22°C, have BIOS set to
shutdown at 95°C to avoid hardware damage. Computer will shut itself off
due to temperature under moderate load such as viewing flash video in
Firefox on hulu.com. This has been repeated at least 3 times.

Running the proprietary fglrx driver 2:8.721-0ubuntu7 (with no other
software changes), the computer idles @ 45°C (20°C cooler) at room
temperature of ~22°C. Watching video on hulu.com does not cause
overheating issues.

This is something that could damage computers. If it's under warranty
but Ubuntu is found on the hard drive the manufacturer will probably
void the warranty. I certainly don't want Ubuntu to get that kind of
reputation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560056] [NEW] [RV770] Lucid beta 2 unbootable from LiveCD/LiveUSB

2016-02-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I downloaded the beta 2 ISO from the servers and made a LiveCD for fresh
install of 10.04. The boot process is carried out until near the end,
the purple plymouth screen goes away and then all I get is flickering
screen with lines running across it. I did a few things like "nomodeset"
and "pci=nomsi" but nothing does. The later one sends the monitor into
power saving mode and the only way out is a hard reboot.

I tried to drop to the terminal when the screen starts to flicker and
ran

#dmesg | grep drm

and there are error messages related to my graphics card. Seems like for
some reason the GPU is being reset every few seconds. See the screen
shot attached for the exact error messages.

I'm trying to boot Lucid on system which includes:

Interl i5
ATI Radeon HD4730
4GB RAM
Dual monitor

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1470862] Re: When using fglrx module, the virtual consoles are blank and useless

2016-02-23 Thread Derick Eddington
Hi, This problem is still present in Xenial Xerus daily-build (I'm using
the MATE flavor).

I found that by changing, via update-alternatives, the x86_64-linux-
gnu_gl_conf and i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf link-groups back to the Mesa
choices, with the fglrx (or fglrx-updates) package still installed, and
then rebooting, the virtual consoles now work and lsmod shows that the
fglrx module is still being used (and the radeon module is not).

So I guess this shows that the OpenGL configuration that uses fglrx is
somehow related to the problem, and that the fglrx module is capable of
having working virtual consoles.

Just to note, after changing those alternatives:
- My x86_64-linux-gnu_gfxcore_conf alternative is still the choice for
fglrx-core.
- My OpenGL is Mesa of course and is much slower (unusably slow, as usual) than
using fglrx for OpenGL.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1545834] Re: Session exits when removing external monitor

2016-02-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Szilard Novaki, please follow these instructions to have apport report a new
bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. First,
execute at a terminal:
cd /var/crash && sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y
dist-upgrade && sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in
/etc/default/apport and restart. Now reproduce the crash, then open a terminal,
navigate to your /var/crash directory and file your report with:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. By
default, this sends the crash to the Ubuntu Error Tracker
infrastructure, which is different than Launchpad. For more on this,
please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ErrorTracker .

However, if after doing this you would still like to have a crash report posted
to Launchpad, for example to ease triage and add others to your report, one
would need to open the following file via a terminal:
sudo nano /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

and comment out the line:
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

by changing it to:
# 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

Save, close, and file the crash report via:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/FILENAME.crash

Where FILENAME is the actual name of the file found in the folder.

However, this report is being closed since the process outlined above
will deal with this issue more efficiently.

Also, please do not attach your crash report manually to this report and
reopen it.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1526079] Re: Mouse cursor sometimes becomes invisible

2016-02-23 Thread Stephen Eisenhauer
Could you share a little technical background on how the BIOS could
affect what seems to be a problem manifested either in X or the Intel
display driver? I'm not saying it couldn't play a role, but it seems
extremely likely that the problem lies in one of those places.

I've been unsuccessful so far in attempts to update the BIOS, as Lenovo
makes this process somewhat more difficult for users without Windows.

The problem happened again today; While moving the cursor from monitor
to another, it disappeared, and now it is only drawn on the external
display. I can still hover/select/click things on the primary display,
but the cursor is not drawn graphically. I would still greatly
appreciate any suggestions for things that I can do when this does
happen which would help narrow down what is happening and lead me closer
to a repro.

2016-02-23 Thread foobar
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to 4.2.0-30 today, and X11 won't start; get simple login:

I have to downgrade to 4.2.0-25 to get any work done.

Sorry for the long response time.

I proceeded to upgrade my laptop to version A09, rebooted, launched
Chrome, and X froze immediately as described above. :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1547599] Re: legacy nvidia drivers fail to work with latest kernel

2016-02-23 Thread Darko Veberic
after some more digging the problems might be related to the fact that
the disk partition table was left in the hybrid GPT/MBR format and thus
the mac is booting in the efi mode. according to
http://www.rodsbooks.com/ubuntu-efi/ this might cause limited support
for nvidia graphics card and related bios rom problems. in other words,
the mac is not booting in the bios compatibility mode.

since ubuntu is the only operating system on the machine, i will
reinstall it by wiping the disk and using a dos partition table. this
should force the mac to boot into the bios mode. unfortunately, since
ubuntu 16.04 desktop dvd does not boot via the optical drive, i have to
use ubuntu 15.10 server cd and then do-release-upgrade since 16.04
desktop does not fit into a standard cd.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1548845] [NEW] [FFe] mesa 11.2.0

2016-02-23 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Public bug reported:

Mesa 11.2.0-rc1 was released yesterday. The release schedule towards
11.2.0 final is as follows:

"The plan is to have one release candidate every Friday, until the final
release on March 11th 2016."

which means there will be two release candidates before the final. First
point release will happen two weeks after, so we can have that too in
16.04.

The main motivation is better support for Intel Kabylake and AMDGPU
driver stack.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1545834] Re: Session exits when removing external monitor

2016-02-23 Thread Szilard Novaki
Finally, I made some progress, hope it helps you.

I've checked the daily image, this is what I've found:
 * In the default config, there removal of default external monitor is handled
correctly.
 * Then I arranged my displays as I use it every day (see attached image)
 * The unity-settings-daemon has crashed after disconnecting the external
monitor (apport popped up, but I did not file a new bug).

So I thought that I have the same thing with 14.04 too, but maybe I have
disabled reporting errors for settings-daemon earlier. I've found a file
called ~/.apport-ignore.xml, and yes, it contained the settings daemon.
I removed it from ignore and now I have crash file around the time of
monitor removal, and its the crash of settings daemon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589485] Re: Ignores physical display size and calculates based on 96DPI

2016-02-23 Thread Berte
Hi All,

I'm jumping in this thread because I think this 'bug' is the source of
many scaling issues.

I'm the owner of a 13" laptop with a 3200x1800 native resolution. As
recommended elsewhere, I set the scale factor to 2 and most applications
are readable now. However, readable is does not mean correct.

Using 3 different tools, I get 3 different DPI. See below:

>get-edid | parse-edid
Section "Monitor"
Identifier ""
ModelName ""
VendorName "SDC"
# Monitor Manufactured week 0 of 2014
# EDID version 1.3
# Digital Display
DisplaySize 290 170
Gamma 2.20
Option "DPMS" "true"
Modeline"Mode 0" 361.31 3200 3248 3280 3316 1800 1802 1807 1816
-hsync -vsync
Modeline"Mode 1" 361.31 3200 3248 3280 3680 1800 1802 1807 2045
-hsync -vsync
EndSection

=> The above info results in about 280 DPI.

>xrdb -query | grep dpi
Xft.dpi:192

>xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
screen #0:
  dimensions:3200x1800 pixels (846x476 millimeters)
  resolution:96x96 dots per inch

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1547599] Re: legacy nvidia drivers fail to work with latest kernel

2016-02-23 Thread Darko Veberic
this bug post is only about MacBookPro3,1.

in ubuntu 15.10 the nouveau driver did not work but nvidia drivers did.
now, in ubuntu 16.04, the nvidia drivers also do not work.

just to see why nouveau fails i uninstalled all nvidia packages and
purged dependencies. while booting without splash the output in the
console stops at the message "fb: switching to nouveaufb from EFI VGA"
and the dmesg has some more:

fb: switching to nouveaufb from EFI VGA
Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x25
nouveau :01:00.0: enabling device (0002 -> 0003)
nouveau :01:00.0: NVIDIA G84 (084700a2)
nouveau :01:00.0: Invalid ROM contents
nouveau :01:00.0: bios: unable to locate usable image
nouveau :01:00.0: bios ctor failed, -22
nouveau: probe of :01:00.0 failed with error -22

i never really tried to get nouveau working with 15.10 so i cannot tell
whether this is a regression or not.

do you want me to file a separate bug report on nouveau on
MacBookPro3,1?

This started because my brightness keys stopped working, laptop won't
boot correctly, kernels fail, slow sluggish pulling up any page, even
terminal, and when I shut laptop , not shut down, it will reboot itself
instead of hibernating. Then purple page pops up and I have to go into
a recovery mode to get in, will not go to sign in page but straight to
desktop. Hp255 Unbuntu 14.04 Remember please that I am a new born baby
with ubuntu (came from Windows) and would need step by step
instructions. Thanks don't mean to be a pain!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1535394] Re: Xorg crashes at certain wiki pages via firefox

2016-02-23 Thread Saren Taşçıyan
I need to shrink my file system, install second Ubuntu OS (besides the current
Ubuntu and Windows 7 installation) and I won't be able to reproduce my setup
(all the applications and configurations). Among those, I have configured
custom keyboard with support for greek letters, I changed hardware accelaration
from SNA to UXA:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/607232/ubuntu-14-04-gui-text-and-pictures-displaying-problem-like-a-virus?rq=1

Maybe these are the root of the problem. If it is possible, I would like
to debug the issue on my current setup (with debugging tools or
configuring for detailed logs etc.). Since, this is my work computer, I
don't want to mess around too much.

If this is the only way to proceed, I may try the daily build in the
future as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1547864] Re: libinput doesn't handle EV_KEY event with a value of 255 (BUTTON_CANCLED), to support Android home buttons

2016-02-23 Thread Alan Griffiths
"Cancelled" would appear to be a behaviour that is "out there" - so
adding it to libinput & Mir is a natural solution.
