It appears a number of people are reporting the same kernel error or
similar with docks in bug 1550779. And one other user also mentions "HP
840" but an older model.

The problems are close enough that I think the best next step is to
treat this as a duplicate of bug 1550779 until further progress is made
there in teasing out multiple issues as appropriate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1848123] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2019-10-14 Thread vinibali
Public bug reported:

Hello there!

I have an HP 840 G5, with an external docking station (HP USB-C Dock G4). All
the input and output devices are connected to this docking station"
- display on Displayport (x2)
- ethernet
- keyboard
- mouse
After I turn on the machine in the morning (probably from S3 sleep), it just
blinks the displays for a few moments, than it turns to black for seconds and
this is an endless loop. If I reconnect the docking station I can get back one
of the displays to life, but the other one remain in sleep state.
In the meanwhile after each of these problems, the intel_pstate driver seems to
fail, all the processors cores are clocked to 3.6GHz.
If I reboot the machine, both the screens are usable again and the intel_pstate
driver is able to change the freqency.
Kernel version 5.0.0-23 was not able to lower the frequency at all, I had to
use the ondemand scheduler.
I found these lines for about 5 days in a previous dmesg log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 23545]

2019-10-14 Thread Martin-peres-n
Hi,

Freedesktop's Bugzilla instance is EOLed and open bugs are about to be
migrated to http://gitlab.freedesktop.org.

To avoid migrating out of date bugs, I am now closing all the bugs that
did not see any activity in the past year. If the issue is still
happening, please create a new bug in the relevant project at
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm (use misc by default).

Sorry about the noise!

That is fine. The screen glitching might be a symptom, but if it still persists
after a patch then I'll create a new report exclusively for the screen
glitching.

2019-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Can you please attach a photo of the original problem (the black screen)
without using nomodeset?

Please also log in to the text console there and record the kernel log:

  dmesg > blackscreendmesg.txt

Then attach the file 'blackscreendmesg.txt' to this bug.

We would like to see photos and logs from the 5.3 kernel trying to boot
without nomodeset.

Interactive use of python shouldn't invoke apport! On my 19.04 system
typing "foo" on the python3 interpreter ends up in this huge ugly mess
for no reason:

2019-10-14 Thread Alberto Milone
How can I reproduce the problem?

I tried the following using a clean chroot:

1) I removed the "restricted" section from my /etc/apt/sources.list, and
updated the apt-cache (or installing 418 it would be impossible)

2) I installed the 418 driver (using the nvidia-driver-418 metapackage). It is
the 418.74-0ubuntu0~18.04.1 version which I copied from
ppa:oem-solutions-group/nvidia-driver-staging into the following PPA, for easy
access (since it was superseded in the original PPA):
https://launchpad.net/~albertomilone/+archive/ubuntu/nvidia-select

3) I re-added the "restricted" section in my /etc/apt/sources.list, and
updated the apt-cache.

4) I did a dist-upgrade, and I could not reproduce the problem, since
the upgrade from 418 to 430 went smoothly.

Every time i boot with kernel 5.3 I can see the services loaded (I disable

I switch to tty1 and the pc runs well, the I reboot to kernel 5.0.

Does the machine even boot kernel 5.3 successfully?
