[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879402] Re: [amdgpu] Proper monitor resolution/refresh rate not available

2020-05-19 Thread Philipp
I tried 3 different Displayport cables without success. In Ubuntu get-
edid tells me that there is no EDID information provided. As the monitor
is working properly in Windows I think that Windows is just doing a
better job at coming up with a 1080p modeline on its own. So in my mind
the thing to do now is trying out different modelines until one with the
proper resolution is actually working but I have no idea how to come up
with more modelines other than using cvt 1920 1080.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879402] Re: [amdgpu] Proper monitor resolution/refresh rate not available

2020-05-19 Thread Philipp
I just went into Windows using a cmd-tool called DumbEDID which gave me
information I upload here (note that there are two monitors present and
the MSI is working fine in Ubuntu, I'm referring to the philips at the
bottom of the log). There is some information that is actually
transported like the native resolution, physical size, monitor model and
some frequencies. I'm wondering if I can use this information now to
create a modeline in Ubuntu.

** Attachment added: "The information for the concerning monitor is at the
bottom. The top shows information about another monitor that is working fine."

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879484] [NEW] Lenovo X1 Extreme with thunderbolt docking station causes overheat with concert of fans

2020-05-19 Thread Raoul Scarazzini
Public bug reported:

Hey everyone,
after resolving some of the problems I got after upgrading to 20.04 [1] I'm now
using my Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 with the thunderbolt docking station (and an
HDMI monitor attached).
Everything worked out of the box, except for the increased general heat of the
system (constantly over 70 °C) and the consequent concert of fans that makes
working aside the (closed) laptop almost impossible.
It is really hard to understand if there's a specific process causing the CPU
to be so constantly stressed, and what is more curious is that monitoring the
general status of the system resources (CPU, Memory and so on) there are no
peaks, it shows a normal usage, which is what I do: browser, mail, and some
console. Something I would expect that with 16 cpu and 32 gigs of RAM should
not be a concern.

Both thermald and tlp services are obviously installed and running.

The drm-tip kernel didn't help the case. Did I understand this correctly
that you have identified the driver to be the problem? If so I have to
delegate this two 3 different drivers with which I have this problem:
the already linked amd driver, but also the proprietary and open source
nvidia drivers that I both tested with unsuccessfully. Can you point me
to the right places here?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879333] Re: [nvidia] Black screen on loading latest system update

2020-05-19 Thread mtbdrew
I do have auto login enabled on this machine but after reading the bug
report you mentioned I don't think these are the same at all. In my
situation the display is completely black with no ability to to do any
of this:

"I just updated to the Ubuntu 19.10 beta. After boot, I'm shown the GDM
login screen (which I shouldn't; I have auto login enabled), and logging
in just takes me back to the same user selection screen even though the
password is correct.

If I switch to a TTY and run `sudo pkill gnome-session-binary`, logging
in through GDM starts working again."

I have to ssh in from a completely different machine and run the
commands I mentioned earlier.

Andrew

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879546] [NEW] I'm not able to boot if not in nomodeset mode. OS isn't able to use Intel Graphics card

2020-05-19 Thread Felippe
Public bug reported:

I'm running 18.04 on a Intel. My computer came with Ubuntu installed and
a Nvidia GeForce MX150 Graphics Card, but I've never been able to use
it, as it always freezes my screen. For a year, I've been using the
Intel Graphics Card instead. The problem is, I got my python3
installation really messed up and had to do a Factory Reset to be able
to boot again (as unfortunately I had no backup).

Since I've had this problem in the past, I've been able to more or less
reproduce the steps I've made to get my computer working with Intel
Graphics. Some of them were:

Purge NVIDIA Graphics:

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia*

Install lightdm, as the default manager got my login screen freezing
too:

sudo apt-get install lightdm

Edit grub settings so I could boot in nomodeset at least:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="mem_sleep_default=deep nomodeset"

(I believe this probably wasn't the right place to write nomodeset, but
I'm not the more experienced user and thought I should remove nvidia-
drm.modeset=1 from my boot settings as I didn't want anything to do with
NVIDIA.)

After login with lightdm in nomodeset, I got that the used Graphics Card
is llvmpipe (LLVM 9.0, 256 bits), not Intel UHD Graphics, which is the
desired one.

So I've installed NVIDIA repo again (sudo add-apt-repository ppa
:graphics-drivers/ppa) and also Nvidia settings for being able to prime-
select intel as the Graphics Card.

My desire is to be able to boot with Intel UHD Graphics but without
nomodeset. How should my grub file look like? It's currently like that:

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nosplash quiet nomodeset"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

And this is my lsmod log:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879042] Re: [radeon] Xorg high CPU usage and stuttering on ubuntu 20.04

2020-05-19 Thread David Santinoli
> 1. Is the high CPU usage sustained when you're not doing anything?

No.

> 2. Is the CPU usage only when using a mouse, or does it also occur
when using a keyboard?

In both cases. For example, Xorg's CPU usage jumps to 85% on my machine
when I continuously switch once per second from one terminal window to
another, regardless of the means (mouse or ALT+TAB).

On the other hand, merely typing (albeit fast) into a terminal window
leads to a much lesser usage by Xorg (around 10%).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879484] Re: Lenovo X1 Extreme with thunderbolt docking station causes overheat with concert of fans

2020-05-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The first problem I can see is that this machine is using the 'intel'
graphics driver for the Intel GPU. That's a mistake as it's an old
driver. The Intel GPU should be using the 'modeset' driver. Please
remove the 'intel' driver from your Xorg config files and/or just
uninstall the package 'xserver-xorg-video-intel' and reboot.

If the heat problem still persists then next please run 'top' to confirm
which process is using the most CPU.

Also if the problem persists after that then please run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1879546] Re: I'm not able to boot if not in nomodeset mode. OS isn't able to use Intel Graphics card

2020-05-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We will need to see what the system log looks like without nomodeset.
Please remove that and try booting again. After that, reboot with
nomodeset and run this command to collect the system log of the failed
boot:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

P.S. Please also avoid using nvidia-drm.modeset=1 as we do not support
that -- it will cause additional bugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1877655] Re: [Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140] Trackpad does not work

2020-05-19 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
It doesn't look like a power management issue, somehow the trackpad just
stop responding during a short usage.

Can you please boot with kernel parameter "dyndbg='file drivers/usb/*
+p' log_buf_len=16M" and attach dmesg?
