[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2040037] Re: Xorg crash

2023-11-08 Thread BertN45
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1861609 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1861609

I try it again, this error has nothing to do with bug #1861609. In 2020
I was running Xubuntu 20.04 and Virtualbox 6.1. This error only occurs
in Xubuntu 23.10 and it does not occur in the development edition of
Xubuntu 24.04.

I will add journalctl -b as attachment and indeed it is related to
vboxguest.

nov 08 13:15:51 VM-Xubuntu-2310 kernel: vboxguest: loading out-of-tree module
taints kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2040037] Re: Xorg crash

2023-10-20 Thread BertN45
** Description changed:

The first login of my Xubuntu 23.10 VBox VM fails. The second login seems OK,
but all programs I start at login are started twice, like e.g conky. It results
in 100% cpu load on one core.
- The system displays an error message for ~2 seconds and it says something
like: "VBoxclient can't connect to X server".
+ The system displays an error message for ~2 seconds and it says something
like: "VBoxclient can't connect to X server".
The error also occurs on a fresh install.
+
+ Some additional info:
+ - The login loop also happens on Ubuntu 23.10 VM when started with Xorg, but
here it keeps looping.
+ - A comparable error occurs on Ubuntu Unity 23.10 VM, on the first screen no
login box will be presented. On the second boot the login screen is presented
and the login seems normal.
+
+ Note that the same Vbox release 7.0.12 has no issues with flavors of
+ 22.04 LTS nor with 20.04 LTS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1988488] Re: Screen freeze before the login screen on VirtualBox (if the third party software option was selected)

2022-10-04 Thread BertN45
I moved all my applications to virtual machines, I use 6 VMs for that
purpose. One VM is dealing with all multimedia apps and I need all
codecs there. That is, why the Host OS is a minimal install of Ubuntu
22.04 LTS, so without any Apps except Firefox.

I can live with my Xorg workaround for 2 reasons:
- Normally I prefer LTS releases and I used the other releases only a few times
in the last 10 years for better drivers or new ZFS functionality;
- I can use Xorg instead of Wayland, since I don't really need 22.10 and for
now I installed it mainly out of curiosity and trying to ensure my use case is
still OK;

Note, that all YouTubers promote to install that third-party software.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1947187] [NEW] Running in xorg unreadable firefox password request

2021-10-14 Thread BertN45

If I use xorg and Firefox asks for the master password that small window

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1947185] [NEW] Wayland does not initially display conky output

2021-10-14 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Starting Ubuntu with wayland does not initially display the .conkyrc
file. Only after a change in that file, conky restarts the display and
.conkyrc is displayed. Conky has been started according to the system
monitor. I doubled the time before starting conky, but that did not
help.

If I change the display to xorg, .conkyrc displays directly as expected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1757493] [NEW] Login loop using virtualbox with 3D acceleration

2018-03-21 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Since Tuesday 20-3-2018 Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 has a login loop. Before
that date everything worked fine. The login loop occurs in a Virtualbox
guest while 3D is enabled for the display.

On the same data Ubuntu 18.04 refused to show the login screen, but I
will file a seperate bug report for it. In its last display it said it
started the Display Manager, but no login screen was displayed. Maybe
the bugs are related.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1751191] Re: Using Vbox with 3D enabled, creates strange stuttering

2018-02-22 Thread BertN45
** Description changed:

- It looks that the sequence of frames displayed at the screen is mixed up. The
display goes back say ¼ a second and that gives a very strange effect. You type
a letter, that letter is erased afterwards and reappears after ¼ of a second.
See the ATTACHED video. You see the same type of going back a number of frames
in e.g. YouTube videos, which gives a jittery effect.
- The problem only occurs if I have 3D acceleration enabled in Virtualbox and
it occurred with both Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10 hosts. It only occurs at Ubuntu
16.04 guests, the problem does not occur in Ubuntu 17.10 nor in other Linux
distros including Ubuntu Mate and Xubuntu. I use Virtualbox 5.2.6 with Guest
Additions 5.2.7 as recommended by Oracle on their website.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1751191] [NEW] Using Vbox with 3D enabled, creates strange stuttering

2018-02-22 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

It looks that the sequence of frames displayed at the screen is mixed up. The
display goes back say ¼ a second and that gives a very strange effect. You type
a letter, that letter is erased afterwards and reappears after ¼ of a second.
See the ATTACHED video. You see the same type of going back a number of frames
in e.g. YouTube videos, which gives a jittery effect.
The problem only occurs if I have 3D acceleration enabled in Virtualbox and it
occurred with both Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10 hosts. It only occurs at Ubuntu 16.04
guests, the problem does not occur in Ubuntu 17.10 nor in other Linux distros
including Ubuntu Mate and Xubuntu. I use Virtualbox 5.2.6 with Guest Additions
5.2.7 as recommended by Oracle on their website.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-13 Thread BertN45
1) Agreed, I will file another bug report.

2) I did already provide that information to you in the original bug-
report using Vbox Guest Additions (VGA) 5.2.4. It did take a lot of time
to produce it, because the system took 10-60 seconds to react to any
mouse click.

Remember the problem occurs only in Ubuntu Gnome, both in 17.10 and
18.04. I tried 17.10 with VGA 5.1.30, 5.2.4 and 5.2.7. I tried 18.04
with VGA 5.2.4 and 5.2.7.

I can't use 5.2.6 for testing, see the next statement on the Download page of
the Virtualbox website:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-12 Thread BertN45
1)
One month ago I upgraded Virtualbox from 5.2.4 to 5.2.6. While I was upgrading
Vbox Guest Additions in my VMs to 5.2.6, I detected that that 5.2.6 Guest
additions introduced a serious boot/login problem for all my VMs. So as a
work-around I kept all my VMs at Guest Additions 5.2.4. I reported that problem
to Oracle here:
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17463
In that long discussion between various persons about the problem, other
work-arounds had been proposed too. I detected yesterday that other people used
"beta" 5.2.7 to solve the problem.

2)
We are dealing with 2 separate problems:
- one is the boot/login problem of the Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.6, reported to
Oracle one month ago. That problem occurs in all my VMs and all my distros. My
work-around was stick to Guest Additions 5.2.4.
- the other is the window maximising problem with Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.4
reported to you only occurring in Ubuntu Gnome 17.10 and 18.04. Work-arounds
are stop using 3D acceleration, if you do not need the performance improvement
of that 3D acceleration. If you need the performance improvement of that 3D
acceleration use any other distro, since the problem only occurs in Ubuntu
Gnome.

3)
I detected today that Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.7 was available. So I thought
maybe I get lucky and it also solves the window maximising problem, so I tried
it. It did not solve that problem. All the time my Host remained at Vbox 5.2.6.

4)
I removed virtualbox-guest-x11. I did not realise, that it was the Ubuntu
version of Vbox Guest Additions. I always install Vbox Guest Additions through
its ISO file, since it then also nicely removes the currently installed
version. In general Ubuntu is a full release behind with respect to Virtualbox.
Ubuntu's current Vbox release for Ubuntu 17.10 is 5.1.30, while Ubuntu 18.04
uses Vbox 5.2.6. I tried your advice at Ubuntu 18.04. That installed Vbox Guest
Additions 5.2.6, so it is completely understandable, that the login problem
reported to Oracle a month ago reappeared.

As Ubuntu you have learned I think four things from this confusion:
- Avoid Vbox Guest Additions 5.2.6 in Ubuntu 18.04. Stick to Vbox 5.2.4 or push
Oracle for 5.2.8.
- I would talk to Oracle about the quality of their regression testing in the
light of your new philosophy with respect to more integration of the Vbox Guest
Additions as reported by e.g. OMG Ubuntu.
- Maybe you should only update the host versions in your repository and leave
the update of the Guest to the current Oracle mechanisms. They store the
correct guest ISO file somewhere in the Linux file system of the host and make
it available to the guest through the Host devices menu "Insert Guest Additions
CD image". They warn you about outdated guests through notification, but leave
the upgrade decision to you. I love that mechanism.
- You still have a separate "windows maximising" problem in Ubuntu Gnome.

I will download the 5.1.30 Guest Additions ISO file and try that one in
Ubuntu 17.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-12 Thread BertN45
1. The host is using 5.2.6. I kept the guests at 5.2.4, because 5.2.6
did freeze during login or did enter a login loop dependent on the
distro. I filed a bug report with Oracle and many persons had the same
issue during login. The beta version 5.2.7 did solve the 5.2.6 login
issues.

Today I also tried the 'beta' version of 5.2.7 with Ubuntu 18.04 with
respect to maximising the window, but without success.

2. I did keep Guest additions 5.2.4 installed for all distros, but I do
not remember how 5.2.2 behaved. Probably I was still using Ubuntu 16.04
for both host and guest during that time.

3. I only have the window maximising problem with Ubuntu Gnome 17.10 and
18.04, but NOT with Ubuntu Mate 17.10; Xubuntu 17.10; Peppermint 8 nor
with Linux Mint 18.3.

4; That package had not been installed, but after installing that
package and 1 or 2 dependencies, the system hung during reboot directly
after starting the Gnome Display Manager. It looks like the bug of point
1 had been re-introduced, but now for both 3D enabled and 3D disabled. I
will try to remove the package again through ctrl+alt+F2 or restore a
back-up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1748729] Re: Xorg freeze

2018-02-12 Thread BertN45
For me the problem is kind of important, since I moved all my work to
specialised Virtual Machines;
a. one for the normal office and web browsing work,
b. one for banking and other financial apps,
c. one to try out new and unknown apps,
d. one to try out Ubuntu 18.04.

The work around I use now, is:
a. Peppermint 8 with 3D acceleration;
b. For banking I can live with software rendering and Ubuntu 17.10;
c. Xubuntu 17.10 with 3D acceleration.

I would politely propose to increase the priority of the bug, since I
expect, it will be relatively simple to solve. Besides a desktop that
freezes, if you maximise a window, looks a little bit like the past of
e.g. Ubuntu 6.06 :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1748729] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2018-02-11 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

I run Ubuntu 18.04 in Virtualbox 5.2.6 with as host OS; Ubuntu 17.10 with the
propriety Nvidia driver 340 as suggested by Ubuntu.
The screen almost freezes completely as soon as I maximise any window in the
guest OS Ubuntu 18.04. Any mouse click takes 10-60 seconds before the system
reacts to it. It took a long time to generate this bug-report.

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 17.10, while Guest OSes Ubuntu Mate
17.10, Xubuntu 17.10, Peppermint 8 and Windows 7 and 10 work without any
problem.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1078139] Re: Conky window not transparent but black

2012-12-17 Thread BertN45
I am using exactly the same conky file on Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 on the
same hardware and there the windows are transparent. The same file on
13.04 gives the black background, that is a regression!

Besides slightly simplified files (no temperature readings) work in
VirtualBox with e.g. OpenSuse 12 and on an old P-III laptop with
Lubuntu, both as expected producing transparent windows. I know these
use other drivers, but you started this discussion by using nvidia in
the argument to dump the bug report on Intel.

I do not file a bug report, because I need a work around, but because I
think something is wrong. If you are not sure whether it is a real bug,
investigate before you take a decision :(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1078139] Re: Conky window not transparent but black

2012-11-16 Thread BertN45
The conky window background is black. I had the same problem in the first month
after the 12.10 release. I am using the same Conky file ".conkyrc" for 12.04
and 12.10 on the same computer and there the conky window is transparent as it
should be.
I'll attach the .conkyrc file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 913551] [NEW] Top bar with applets not respomding in dual screen mode

2012-01-08 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

I have a dual screen, display 1 (22") above screen 2 (15"). When I use
the lower screen 2 for the quest operating system in full screen mode,
the applets in the top bar of screen 1 cannot be used as long as the
active window is the full screen mode of the quest OS. A maximise window
of the quest does not cause the same problem.

Small problem, but somewhat annoying, since sometimes you have to start
another program and make the window of that program the active window.

Maybe the info can be used to correct thiss annoyance in 12.04.

ProblemType: Bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 913547] [NEW] In dual screen mode starting programs the windows does not appears

2012-01-08 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

I have a 22" inch external screen 1 above a laptop 15" screen 2. It works more
of less, except when I start a new program:
- the display is full with other windows, because then a new window is put on
the LEFT of display 1 or partly so that only the right part of the window is
displayed. This often happens with Nautilus, Terminal and others.
- with Evolution (full screen by default?) the windows is always put completely
at the left of display 1 and with ALT+F7, I have to drag the window to screen 1.

It looks that the system, while looking for the best spot to put the
windows, assumes that screen 2 is on the left, but it is at the bottom.
The added information should show the Evolution window at the left of
screen 1.

Hi

I am sorry my system died in one of the many power breaks, it worked
however nicely with xubuntu 11.04 and before with ubuntu 10.10. It is a
HP desktop with a special powersupply, no spares here.

Good luck

Bert

2011-04-07 Thread BertN45
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 715096 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/715096

I doubt whether this bug has anything to do with Skype crashing the
system. this error occurs directly after booting and my system crashed
on almost every input made, besides it is a different chip. The
situation is getting worse with every update. Now the system freezes
directly after booting and the display is completely garbled.

The HP d530 SFF has been a very popular machine and HP sold millions of
them especially to businesses, but they are hitting the second hand
market now and I bought mine for 45 euro. It is a pity it does not work
with Ubuntu. It does not work with Gnome nor with Unity, but I switched
to xubuntu/xfce and there it works like a Swiss watch, including the
transparency for the windows and windows decorations. Once in a while I
will recheck the ubuntu flavor, since it is still installed.

I am not very experienced with ubuntu. As a user I have used it now as
my main/only OS for 2 years, but I have not yet very much knowledge
about the internals of Linux. However I know this type of complexity,
because I designed and wrote parts of OSes for main frames and 16-bit
minis also supporting vector based graphical radar displays back in the
70/80-ties.

I am a pensioner and I have some time to spend. So what kind of
information do you need and how can I help to get it?

One things I need to know is how to enable/force a crash dump , most
Internet sides explain how to do it from the command line, but that does
not help with a frozen system and garbled display. The system does not
even react to the power off button anymore. You really have to press it
for 4 seconds.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747487] Re: [i865] GPU lockup (IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-04-04 Thread BertN45
The bug did only occur once after a fresh install of the xubuntu
desktop. I never had the problem again and I am using xubuntu daily. I
will be switching to xubuntu. I like the new interface, the efficient
resource usage and ubuntu does not work on my Intel 8286SG integrated
graphics controller.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747487] [NEW] [i865] GPU lockup (IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-04-01 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have tried xUbuntu resulting in this error after logging in to the
desktop. Gnome and Unity are completely unusable with this i865 GPU.
Gnome completely freezes and only power off helps. Unity does not even
start. I will continue to try xUbuntu, see what happens here. In
Ubuntu 10.10 everything worked perfectly also the 3D effects of Compiz.
Can't you re-use the driver of Ubuntu 10.10 for 11.04?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 746396] [NEW] [i865] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000010 PGTBL_ER: 0x00000029 IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-03-31 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The crash occurred after a number of other crashes related to the Intl
8286SG GPU. It looks like support for it has been seriously compromised
compared to 10.10 where it worked without problem also in 3D mode.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726911] Re: [i865] GPU lockup 261cbc4c (IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-03-31 Thread BertN45
The problem has been introduced in 11.04. In 10.10 I could use the
8286SG GPU without any problem, it nicely operated in 3D mode and it
turned the cube as expected. In 11.04 it does not recognize the 3D
capabilities and use the gnome desktop but that one is not usable
anymore.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 715096] Re: [i945gm] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-03-31 Thread BertN45
It kooks like the software for intel 8286SG is getting worse. In 10.10
everything works fine and compiz works in 3D mode using e.g. the Cube.
In 11.04 the hardware is not recognized as 3D and the system hangs or
freezes almost constantly, sometimes the screen is also distorted. The
problems occur in all Ubuntu login modes. The system is completely
unusable.
