For clarity I am not actually using a dock, I just have the external
monitor plugged in to the laptop, and it does not suspend when I close
the lid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1415958] Re: Laptop + external display does not suspend on lid close

2015-03-31 Thread Colin Law
I am pretty sure that a couple of years ago the gnome guys decided that the
laptop should not suspend if an external monitor is plugged in (which was a
change to the previous strategy). I think that by popular request this was
reverted back to suspend (possibly only in Ubuntu, I don't know). I am sure
there was a bug for this but I can't find it. Now it has apparently changed
again.
I can see that for some it makes sense to not suspend, but for those who use
the laptop in a dock with both displays active it is annoying to have to use
the menus to suspend. I would have thought it more appropriate to have the
default stay as it has been for many years. Ideally there could be an
additional option in the settings to allow a choice of lid closure actions when
there are two displays. Currently the option is to suspend or not. It does
not say suspend, but only if there is no external display connected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1415958] Re: Laptop + external display does not suspend on lid close

2015-03-02 Thread Colin Law
In fact I see from my bug #1384454 that Utopic with kernel 3.16.0-23 and
with 3.18.0-031800rc1 both suspended ok with external screen (though
they did suffer from windows moving workspaces as in that bug).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1415958] Re: Laptop + external display does not suspend on lid close

2015-03-02 Thread Colin Law
In terms of the kernel version I don't know exactly as I do not suspend
very often, but I never saw the problem before upgrade from Utopic. I
have just tried booting into a live Utopic image which was the release
candidate on 17th Oct 14 and uname shows 3.16.0-22 and it suspends ok
there. Perhaps it is not purely a kernel issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1415958] Re: Laptop + external display does not suspend on lid close

2015-03-02 Thread Colin Law
It is the same situation with v3.16-utopic. Closing the lid with ext
monitor connected causes windows to move to ext monitor but does not
suspend.

I have discovered another symptom that may possibly be related. With
any of the kernels and with the external monitor not connected, closing
the lid does nothing during the first four minutes after booting. After
that time it suspends ok (ext monitor not connected). If closed during
first four minutes then nothing happens, but if left closed it does
suspend after that time has elapsed. Since discovering this I have gone
back and checked the other kernels again and waited till it will suspend
with no ext monitor and re-confirmed that it does not suspend with the
ext monitor connected.

As a matter of interest are others seeing suspend ok with external
monitor?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1415958] Re: Laptop + external display does not suspend on lid close

2015-03-01 Thread Colin Law
Just in case it is relevant, when I upgraded to BIOS 1.18 I ran into bug
#887793 (Kworker constantly taking about 100% CPU) worked around as in
comment 114 there (echo disable
/sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe13). This suspend bug was still seen
before and after the workaround. Before disabling gpe13, top showed
kworker hogging one of the cores and there was no sign of Xorg near the
top of the cpu usage list. After implementing the workaround Xorg re-
appeared as normal with a few % of processor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1415958] [NEW] Laptop + external display does not suspend on lid close

2015-01-29 Thread Colin Law
Public bug reported:

Running up to date Vivid on laptop with external display, closing the
lid does not suspend even though suspend is selected in the power
settings for lid close. The display flashes and apps move to external
display. Syslog shows no attempt to suspend.

With no external display connected the laptop suspends as expected.

In the logs the lid was closed on Jan 29 15:04:00 and opened at 15:04:30
There are messages of the form
i915 :00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
in syslog at that time but I suspect they may be a different issue.

Not sure whether xorg is the correct package for this, hopefully someone
will redirect if appropriate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1224732] Re: Custom default keyboard shortcuts don't work

2014-07-06 Thread Colin Law
@Martin, I am not going to get involved in an argument, I am only trying
to help. I suspect the reason this bug is no longer getting attention
is that the devs looked at it months ago and since the bug as described
(custom shortcuts not working) was no longer showing itself they have
lost interest and unsubscribed from the bug. My suggestion to open a
new bug describing succinctly the problem you are seeing was not for my
benefit it was for yours. A new bug, referencing 14.04 in particular,
and if confirmed by others, is more likely to get attention than
continuing to flog away at this one.

2014-02-06 Thread Colin Law
I am seeing similar problems (though less severe) with fglrx
13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 on ubuntu 12.04 with HD3300:
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS780D
[Radeon HD 3300]

$ fglrxinfo
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such
operation)

Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12

It was ok with fglrx 8.960

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1222602] Re: [regression] [gen3] Mesa 9.2 makes Unity unusable on Atom class hardware and 943/945 graphics controllers

2013-11-08 Thread Colin Law
@Danny, this bug caused the Dash to take tens of seconds to appear and
some other graphics to be slow, however the basic operation of the
machine was little affected. Your problem appears to be different so I
suggest reporting a new bug.

2013-10-07 Thread Colin Law
Olibaf: the new driver is a great improvement, but it is still not good
enough I am afraid. For example, with the new driver the Dash still
takes about 4 seconds to show, coming up in several steps. With the
workaround setting MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=1.4 it comes up in about
than 0.5 seconds. Before the new driver and without the workaround the
Dash took tens of seconds to come up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 28052] Re: Improve mouse sensitivity and acceleration settings

Could someone clarify here, is all the above saying that it is known
that the mouse sensitivity setting does nothing and that to make it do
something is a wishlist item rather than a bug? Seeing this on 11.04

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 864010] Re: lightdm segfault in libglib

2011-10-05 Thread Colin Law
I am seeing the same symptom after login with a black screen and stuck
mouse pointer in the middle of screen (well actually at mid point of
virtual screen as I have dual screen setup) and similar messages in the
logs. For me it is intermittent, maybe one time in 5.

@Dave, you say that you can recover by restarting lightdm, can you
explain how to do this? I cannot even get a terminal with ctrl alt F1,
though when I click the power button it does power down normally after a
few seconds.

This bug has been identified and fixed. Anyone experiencing similar
problems on a fully up to date system is seeing a different bug. They
should report it as a new bug after checking there is not another
existing bug that matches their symptoms.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 619663] Re: [maverick] Non-mirrored dual-screen gives narrow display on secondary monitor

2010-11-01 Thread Colin Law
I think the flickering displays is a different issue. This bug is about
only seeing a narrow window on the second monitor, the total image width
being limited to 2048 pixels. That bug is fixed I believe. I think
those seeing flickering windows had better look for a different existing
bug or report a new one.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663159] [NEW] Logout when switching user - X server error

2010-10-19 Thread Colin Law
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu desktop 10.04 all up to date.
Login as user A, switch to user B. Switch back to user A causes user A to be
logged out and the login screen is shown.
In xorg.0.log.old I see

(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch
(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch
(II) intel(0): No memory allocations

Fatal server error:
Failed to submit batchbuffer: Bad file descriptor

May related to bug #576336 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/576336) as I also get a crash when
closing VT after ctl-alt-f1, though I have not managed to see the above
error in that situation.

I can now confirm that I can also replicate fully bug #576336 with the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 644359] Re: Dual head problem - can't use both monitors fully

2010-09-22 Thread Colin Law
For clarity I should probably have stated in the text that this is an
issue on 10.10 Beta, though this can be seen from the diagnostics.

Following further tests I can now confirm that this appears to be an
issue with the total width of the virtual display being too large
(possibly 2048?). All is well if I have resolutions of 1024x768 on
both displays or 800x600 and 1024x768. The problem appears if I try
1280x800 and 1024x768 for example.

I have Visual Effects set to None, though setting to Normal seems to
have no effect on the issue.

Hopefully Maverick will not ship with this bug unfixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 644359] [NEW] Dual head problem - can't use both monitors fully

2010-09-21 Thread Colin Law
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a laptop with external monitor and when I use System,
Preferences, Monitor to configure dual head mode with the desktop
extended across the two displays (with monitor to the right) with
resolutions 1280x800 on the laptop and 1280x1024 on the monitor (the
native resolutions) the desktop only extends half way across the
external monitor and only 3/4 of the height. I believe it may be
clamping at total width 2048 and only using 800 of the available 1024 on
the external monitor.

To make matters worse, when I log out and back in I get only a reduced
width display on the laptop and nothing on the monitor. I have to
revert to mirrored mode and start again to get the external monitor
back.

I have dual boot with 10.04 and when I boot into 10.04 the dual head
display works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 55270] Re: Double-click timeout is not applied to X

2009-12-02 Thread Colin Law
I had this problem with jEdit on 8.10 and the workaround
(*multiClickTime: 400) in /etc/X11/Xresources/X11-common worked for me.
I have now updated to Karmic and the workaround no longer works.
Neither did putting it in ~/.Xdefaults. I found that I had to put it in
~/.Xresources for it to work.

jEdit 4.3pre18, Sun java 1.6.0_15
