[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 941588] Re: [945GM] recurrent font corruption

2012-05-05 Thread David Tombs
Adding

Section Device
Identifier Intel
Driver intel
Option DebugWait true
EndSection

to xorg.conf removed the symptoms, just like in bug 745608.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 941588] [NEW] [945GM] recurrent font corruption

2012-02-26 Thread David Tombs
Public bug reported:

At least once every day I get font corruption on my laptop. The
corruption is blank lines running through certain font glyphs like those
lines didn't paint at all--I can see the background behind them. When it
happens, each corrupt character is corrupt in the same way throughout
the application. Different glyphs can be corrupt in different
applications, and restarting an application will usually fix it (though
forcing a repaint, e.g. through refreshing a page in Firefox does not).

See attached screenshot.

Marcel, thanks for the help but bug 546578 is the same bug as this so we
need to keep it as the duplicate. It's really not a bug in gnome-
screensaver, that was changed just as a workaround.

OK, I'm going to call this an X bug for now. Please execute the
following command, as it will automatically gather debugging
information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 380471

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538346] Re: Display manager in Ubuntu 9.10 not working with dual displays properly

2010-06-24 Thread David Tombs
Hi Simon, I'm sorry for these other issues, I guess they're dual-monitor
related. /This/ particular bug is resolved, though, so if we want to
pursue reports for these other bugs we'll have to find new reports.

As far as the mosaic issue while booting, is this in the extra space
around the screen with the larger resolution? When I boot with two
monitors, the screen with the bigger resolution gets a cropped image
with some random junk in the blank area. Sounds similar to you. I
couldn't find a bug report on that, so if you want to submit your own
(ubuntu-bug xorg), I'll confirm it for you.

The shutdown issue was probably unrelated to the video driver, and the
Unknown Program issue is almost definitely unrelated to the crash
after you were able to logout. If you can reproduce either one, please
do submit a report about it.

Based on what you have told me, I don't think you have to worry about X
crashes during a session. The issues seem to be when starting up or
shutting down the session, which is typically much more error-prone.

Hi Simon, thanks for the update. In the future, please submit such large
texts as attachments to make them easier to read. (You can give them
different descriptions to differentiate with your old log.)

It seems like your configuration is pretty weird. The default nouveau
driver is failing to load because you have some proprietary NVIDIA
leftovers on your system. Could you make sure the packages nvidia-
current, nvidia-173, and nvidia-96 are not installed?

sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current nvidia-173 nvidia-96

Then try again without an xorg.conf and we'll see how it does. Thanks
for your patience.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322921] Re: At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors

2010-06-13 Thread David Tombs
Driver is important because most xorg bugs are actually bugs in the
drivers. Yes, it's possible the underlying issue is the same, but it's
also possible the underlying issue is different, and it's much less
confusing the treat the reports separately if there's any chance that
they might in reality be separate.

It's not like separate reports are going to hinder fixing this bug. I'm
not sure why you're so against it. This is standard operating procedure
here, to avoid fiascoes like bug 197762.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322921] Re: At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors

2010-06-12 Thread David Tombs
Unfortunately, I could not reproduce this using the default nouveau
driver in Lucid, so this really seems to be driver-dependent. I'm going
to split this into separate reports. Simon, I'm going to un-dupe yours.
Francis, please file a report from lucid using ubuntu-bug fglrx.

Thank you both for your patience.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 138087] Re: [RS482] Changing screen resolution garbles display

2010-06-01 Thread David Tombs
It's a bit harder to boot into VESA-only from the LiveCD now. If you
can't run a virtual machine or something, I think your best bet would be
to add the nomodeset kernel parameter at the boot menu, then play with
/etc/X11/xorg.conf once booted to force the vesa driver to be used. (See
my description in bug 586446 for how I reproduced it.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570064] Re: switching between user accounts freezes the system

separate issue? Does it still persist after the latest gnome-screensaver
update (2.30.0-0ubuntu2)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 586949] [NEW] cannot enable visual effects with nvidia-common

2010-05-28 Thread David Tombs
Public bug reported:

I cannot enable Visual Effects on my system, even though nvidia-current
is selected in jockey and Xorg.0.log shows NVIDIA driver in use.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Select nvidia-current in jockey.
2) Open System - Preferences - Appearance
3) On Visual Effects tab, try to select Normal or Extra (as opposed to None).
4) Progress bar will display, after which screen will blink and you get a
dialog box saying, Desktop effects could not be enabled

OK, I'm sorry for all the confusion. Please execute the following
command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a
terminal:

apport-collect 357900

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502485] Re: [Radeon Xpress 200M] white screen after VT switch with VESA driver

2010-05-14 Thread David Tombs
Yep, I can still reproduce this on lucid. Note that I had to use
radeon.modeset=0 boot parameter or else the VESA driver wouldn't load.

Setting back to Confirmed.

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-vesa (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-vesa

I'm currently running X with the VESA driver while debugging a suspend
issue, and came across a freeze in the VESA driver on my hardware.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Boot to login screen (gdm) using VESA driver
  2) Switch to VT1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back to VT7 8 times.
  3) Try to switch to VT1 again, screen freezes and fades to white. Machine
does not respond to ping.

I have tried this over and over again, it always freezes on the 9th
attempt, no more, no less. Also, putting the machine in suspend can
trigger it if I have already switched VT's 8 times, otherwise a
suspend/resume cycle seems to reset the GPU so that I can successfully
switch another 8 times! Pretty weird bug.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information.

PS: Ignore the Xorg log attached by apport, it's from a new session (of
  course).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357900] Re: Epia-M6000 display problems hang

2010-05-09 Thread David Tombs
Well, if you hadn't said anything about cmov I would have thought this
was definitely an xorg bug. It's slightly possible it could be a
processor issue, but I think it's very unlikely that your computer would
get as far as the desktop at all in that case. Anyway, if it really is a
cmov issue, then unfortunately this bug is invalid since you're using
unsupported hardware. So we'll let the xorg guys decide what to do with
this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 569803] Re: upgrade 8.04LTS to 10.4LTS RC results in no keyboard available

2010-04-30 Thread David Tombs
I'm also going to edit your bug description to target the keyboard
issue, I hope you don't mind. Please file a separate report for the
flash issue. Thanks!

** Description changed:

I have upgraded Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit to Ubuntu 10.4 RC without any
  problem.

But when I upgrade Ubuntu 8.04LTS there are problems:
- 1. If flashplugin-nonfree_10.0.1.218+really9.0.262.0ubuntu1_i386 is installed
in 8.04LTS the whole process fails resulting in an unusable system. The package
manager ends up with: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state message.
- I got around this only by removing the above package from 8.04 before the
upgrade.

  2. When I remove flashplugin, then the upgrade process seems to run fine
and results in a booting system. But the system does not accept keyboard
input anywhere. Mouse input is OK and input from onboard keyboard is ok
  also.

both above systems are running on VMware.
