Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1512066] Re: Desktop screen and icon corruption
If I may take the opportunity to show examples of corruption taken as screenshots prior to reverting to 15.04. At present I am trialing mint as a second resort. I will attempt the recommendations. Like hundreds if not thousands who dislike windows in any format, I changed to Ubuntu 10.4 many years ago, and progressed through upgrades as they became available. It is only since moving from 14.10 that these corruptions began. Best Regards. and thank you for the response Geoff On 7 November 2015 at 14:11, Christopher M. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1512066] [NEW] Desktop screen and icon corruption
Public bug reported: This is now the 3 rd time to reinstall 15.10. Previously the 15.04 version has been re-installed. Under 15.04 the problem (bug) was restricted to the desktop background image in that after a few days and new updates loaded the screen became corrupted with the appearance of a view like looking through opaque reed glass. The blame was put on 'Variety' which was in use. Peter Levi terms this problem a 'low key bug'? It makes no difference whether 'Variety' is in use or not As the problem (bug) only affected the desktop background then it was workable. The new release of 15.10 was hoped to iron out the problem, but once again after receiving updates corruption began, and is much more severe in that icons become distorted when the mouse passes over them sections of text work become a. invisible or b. distorted to be unreadable. To date I have re-installed 15.10 four times. Everything is stable until I begin to accept updates. and the corruption begins. I have brought up this problem before since 23 rd October. I cannot be the only individual suffering from this problem. I have two machines and the results are the same on both. I have changed monitors to no avail. The programme was re-installed yesterday and is stable without any updates. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371401] Re: randomly freezing
Summary === I think I am affected by this same bug, I have all the above systems and get hard lockups with Linux kernel 3.16 every 5 - 15 minutes. Attempted upgrading to (x)ubuntu 14.10 to see if this improved stability and laptop crashed so badly during the upgrade that it broke grub and had to be recovered with ubuntu boot-repair. This alowed the system to boot and I was able to complete configuration with dkpg --configure -a --pending System still crashes every few minutes when running (x)ubuntu 14.10 and about 50% of the time crashes before even reaching the login screen. If I'm lucky attempting to swich VCs will resolve things but the system always crashes eventually and has to be powered off by holiding the power button for 10 seconds or via the magic sysreq key. No other key cominations work. Hardware I also have an Asus laptop with an Nvida card which is what led me to this bug report, the following hardware is present: * Laptop model Asus G750JS (ASUS-NotebookSKU) * GK104M [GeForce GTX 870M] * 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (i915 - not used) * BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter * QCA8171 Gigabit Ethernet BIOS/DMI information == I tried flashing the latest BIOS from (http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ROG_G750JS/HelpDesk_Download/) but it didn't fix anything. Running the commands listed above gives: $ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date G750JS.208 07/17/2014 Driver info This problem occurs with both the nouveau and nvidia drivers: rc nvidia-331-updates 331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4 (removed by "additional drivers" application) ii xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.11-1ubuntu2 Workaround == This configuration is rock solid on kernel 3.13. I was able to boot to a previously installed kernel (3.13.0-44-generic) and the system performs as expected and is stable. Debug info = I was able to take a photo after the ubuntu system upgrade crashed (attached). The system has been generating a bunch of problem reports too so I've been clicking the submit button. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953919] Re: corrupt boot splash and terminal console with nvidia driver
I have found a workaround that works at least for me. I appended "vga=792 nomodeset" to the kernel arguments, and I provided an /etc/X11/xorg.conf specific to my setup. Incidentally, my graphics card is a GeForce4 and not a GeForce3 as stated earlier. For the instance where I was seeing a blank screen with just a cursor, it was sufficient to append "nomodeset" without the vga argument, resulting in a low- resolution console and tty 1-6 screens. For the instance where I was seeing black and white stripes and blocks, it was necessary to provide both vga and nomodeset arguments. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/953919 Title: corrupt boot splash and terminal console with nvidia driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/953919/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953919] Re: corrupt boot splash and terminal console with nvidia driver
I have the same problem using the nvidia driver (actually nvidia-96) with a GeForce3 card and a recent installation of Ubuntu 12.04. While booting up, the grub menu works fine, but after that, the screen goes blank with just a cursor. The lightdm login screen comes up with less than full resolution, but that's no big deal. The X session itself works fine. However, the tty 1-6 screens are blank with just a cursor, just like the boot console screen. I have a second 12.04 installation on another partition of the same hardware, which was upgraded from previous versions of Ubuntu. Booting from this partition, I have the same problem, except that the console and tty 1-6 show a low resolution screen with just black and white stripes and blocks, just like the original poster described, instead of blank with just a cursor. I have no idea when the problem started, because I had been using the nouveau driver for a year or two before now. I have tried using drm_kms_helper, but I haven't gotten it to work yet. /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/edid contains correct EDID data from my firmware/edid file, but /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/modes remains empty and the driver provides incompatible modes. I was also getting the low graphics mode problem when using Ubuntu 12.02.2 with Virtualbox. I've tested the updated libpciaccess package with Virtualbox in two ways: 1) I installed the package into a live session running on Virtualbox. 2) I built the package into a custom Live image which I ran on Virtualbox. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1105389] [NEW] Arrandale GPU hangs occasionally after libdrm2 upgrade to 2.4.39-0ubuntu0.1
Public bug reported: After yesterday's upgrade of libdrm-intel1, libdrm-nouveau1a, libdrm- radeon1 and libdrm2 to 2.4.39-0ubuntu0.1 on Ubuntu 12.04, my Arrandale GPU has started to hang occasionally. I am having the same trouble with an i915. My system is stock everything (upgraded from maverick to natty) except running the PAE kernel and the "ubuntu classic" gdm session. A freeze sometimes occurs within about five minutes of booting up and logging in, but doesn't happen at all if the session survives longer than that, as it usually does. I don't use Firefox, so it's not caused only by that. A freeze can happen randomly even when just popping up any menu. Then it restarts the session using tty8 and doesn't crash again. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 713867] Re: Live-CD and Installed Ubuntu freeze on boot with GeForce 210 / Nouveau
I agree this is a show stopper for a lot of people. I have never had any issues with my system using NVIDIA until I switched my setup to how I described above. Before that I was using a VGA to DVI converter but then i noticed the weight of the VGA plug was pulling down on the port and I couldn't allow that. I was so sure I had found the culprit to all the black screen on install problems. But I still think I will find what I reported actually effects alot of people. Just not you. not trying to stear you away from the open source drivers but im curious what the 270 nvidia drivers will do for you as you said you have issues with the ones immediately available to you threw ubuntu as well. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings Then go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and make sure "Nvidia current" (you should already have this selected we are just making sure it is still. before we did the steps above it was using the 190 something version driver probably. Now it is using the 270 version. If current version is selected then restart (this is driver I am using after all issues with install) when pc comes back up you can check which driver is being used by running cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version do you have any of the above issues with this driver? also please copy and paste the output of cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version like i said im not trying to stear you away from the open source version. I just want to report if all issues are resolved using latest closed source driver. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/713867 Title: Live-CD and Installed Ubuntu freeze on boot with GeForce 210 / Nouveau ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661235] Re: live-cd boot does not work with nvidia ion (ZOTAC GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi) nor with GeForce 210
Also i think its trying to display gdm not freezing. You just cant ctrl alt del out of it because it brought down your keyboard. Once gdm loads the keyboard would normally be brought back up. You should notice, or at least it did for me the keyboard lights shutting off right after plymouth finishes. After about 2 or 3 minutes it will restart on its own. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/661235 Title: live-cd boot does not work with nvidia ion (ZOTAC GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi) nor with GeForce 210 ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 713867] Re: Live-CD and Installed Ubuntu freeze on boot with GeForce 210 / Nouveau
The cut and paste below was my comment on your other bug. So i just wanted to include it. This bug posting though explains exactly what was happing to me right down to the blinking _ in the upper left and freezing, however for me it also kicks off the display completely and am presented with a no connected device message on my screen. The reason why there is nothing you can do to get out of it (exept powerdown the pc or wait as after a few minutes it will restart itself) is because at the time the display crashed it was also brining down your keyboard. The keyboard would normally be brought back up right after display did not load the keyboard did not boot up. You will notice when this happens by all the keyboard lights going out. I came to this conclusion after realising in a working install environment the keyboard is brought down and back up right before gdm kicks in. # CUT/PASTE my comment on bug #661235 # You wouldn't by any chance have a dual display set-up or be using a non VGA connection are you. Even if your are not check your bios and see if dual display is enabled (Advanced Chipset in my bios). I found if it is enabled and set to primary video AUTO or PCI-E and you are using a (in my case) HDMI connection the install will fail. I think it was auto. Unfortunately I forgot to document that one. But I have documented that PCI-E did work, so its not clear to me why auto would fail and PCI-E would work when they both were using the PCI-E connection. This might have just been a mishap but after trying to install so much once it got installed I did not want to try to recreate problem. Can someone verify? 3. (HDMI Connection and a VGA to DVI Adapter Connection) Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - Auto ---> WORKS (displays on flatscreen) Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - PCI-E ---> WORKS Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - VGA---> WORKS So to me it appears this driver does not work properly with the BIOS having Dual Display Enabled.
