[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 987720] Re: Xorg freeze - black screen after splash screen

2012-04-25 Thread Ilja Sidoroff
I've tried debuggin this, but haven't been very successful -- using 3.0
kernel as a workaround doesn't work anymore. Purging nvidia-drivers
(with apt-get purge) resulted largely unusable system: booting with
nouveau (with 3.2 kernel) splash screen was corrupted, however I got the
drumroll sound but with black screen. 3.2 recovery mode gave me kernel
error "EDD Information not available" and the booting was halted.

I tried to downgrade to .33 driver but couldn't find way to do it. I
tried manually installing (dpkg -i) nvidia-current-
dev_280.13-0ubuntu6.1_amd64.deb which was the latest package before
295.40, but the package had dependency issues and wouldn't install.

When installing/uninstalling drivers, jockey would also sometimes
complain about failed install so I mainly used apt-get for the job (is
there something else jockey does besides listing the options and
installing/uninstalling them?)

However, I can confirm that my monitor is the source of problems. I was
forced to use another monitor at some point, which worked fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 987720] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2012-04-24 Thread Ilja Sidoroff
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 12.04 (beta), my Apple cinematic display hasn't been
working correctly. Booting and splash screen works normally, but at the
end of the boot the screen goes black. This doesn't happen all the the
time -- I managed to boot correctly once, another time I got to gnome
login before then screen froze.

My current workaround is to boot older kernel (the one used in 11.10,
3.0.x). Since this is my work machine, I haven't had time to debug more
thoroughly, so I don't know if the problem lies in nvidia drivers,
kernel or x.org.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 969121] Re: Cannot boot Live CD with Nvidia GTX 550Ti

This is completely unrelated to this bug. 'nomodeset' effectively
prevents nouveau from loading, hiding the issue. This bug is about
nouveau in Precise kernel (well, for other reasons in Oneiric too), not
about the Nvidia blob. 'nomodeset' has no effect on the Nvidia
proprietary driver, because it doesn't support kernel based mode setting
anyway.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 969121] Re: Cannot boot Live CD with Nvidia GTX 550Ti

2012-04-13 Thread Ilja Sekler
This is a kernel bug
which says that all 3.2 and 3.3 kernels will crash as soon as the
nouveau kernel module is loaded. I don't know if other NVIDIA cards of
the NVC0 generation are affected as well.

The good news, not noted in the upstream bug: the issue is resolved in
3.4rc2 at the latest. Verified on Fedora 16.

Ubuntu 12.04 is already in the kernel freeze phase prior to the release,
so the OOTB experience will likely remain broken for all users with a
GTX 550 Ti. The workaround is to prevent nouveau from loading and to use
vesa instead.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2010-04-30 Thread Ilja Pavkovic
TJ, the same crash happened again, had to REISUB my system and again
found both entries in the log files (NMI issue and EQ overflowing)
within the last 5 minutes. That somehow relates.

same for me on a thinkpad z61m with ati x1400. Also in the

setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT
Apr 23 14:57:12 kernel: [14685.638506] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason

on the PCI bus.
Apr 23 14:57:13 kernel: [14685.638513] Dazed and confused, but trying to

may or may not be related.
