[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1533702] [NEW] Only 2 monitors detected via laptop docking station

2016-01-13 Thread JGJones
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.04
Linked to this bug - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1382462

Laptop is a Dell Precision M4800.

Dell docking station is used, and this docking station comes with 2 x
DVI, 2 x DisplayPort and 1 x VGA ports.

I have 2 x 1980x1080 monitors - one is using DVI and the other on
DisplayPort and both are detected fine.

I also have a "spare" 20" monitor that is 1680x900 and only take VGA and
this is plugged in.

The laptop is configured to disable the use of Intel GPU and to use
Nvidia GPU at all times.

With nvidia-settings installed:

On the login screen - all 4 displays are on (including laptop) although
going to the VGA/laptop screen cause the screen to "scroll" with the
cursor.

After login - after much work which resulted in just the two HD monitors
showing output and is configured via nvidia-settings. It only detects
two displays.

BUT going to the Display Settings - it shows all 4 screens and any
attempts in using this can break things, Display Settings also freeze on
every action for a short period of time.

On a whim I decided to uninstall nvidia-settings to see how it might
affect things.

Display Settings now works without issues and it show only two detected
screens - it does not detect the laptop screen or the VGA screen.

What I expected:

All 4 displays to be working but at a minimum all 3 external displays to
be working, the laptop screen would be a bonus

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1382462] Re: 10de:0dfa Desktop/windows painted incorrectly in dual monitor configuration

2016-01-12 Thread JGJones
I have this problem with two HD monitors plugged into the DVI ports on
the docking port.

I have a 3rd monitor in the VGA port and on login screen - all 4
displays are showing (including laptop) although moving mouse around
does cause some issues.

After logging in - I have two monitors (both HD, in DVI ports), and
laptop/VGA is off.

I fixed my issues simply by removing nvidia-settings (sudo apt-get
--purge remove nvidia-settings) and doing the rest in Display Settings.

When I had nvidia-settings installed, I often had issues:

1. nvidia-settings will only show two detected monitors (in DVI ports)
2. Display Settings will show 4 displayers (VGA and laptop included) however
attempting to change any settings in this cause a lot of problems (ie - it'll
freeze for a period of time, mess up the displays etc. After much pain I
managed to disable laptop and VGA via this and it worked then)

However after I removed nvidia-settings:

Display Settings work just fine and show two monitors only (both DVI)
and work perfectly.

So it appears that nvidia-settings is somehow conflicting with Display
Settings in this particular case. My solution was simply to just
uninstall nvidia-settings and it works.

I hope this works for others - if you could confirm the same thing?

Thanks!

2015-08-11 Thread JGJones
Sorry, commented in the wrong area :S - I get a freeze exactly as
described here but it happens whenever I use VLC - but I'm not using
Intel GPU but nvidia so it doesn't fit in here. Please ignore.
