[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1325940] Re: Desktop sometimes comes up with undisplayable screen resolution
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu ** Description changed: Hello, the PC from which I'm sending this report sometimes fails to boot into the desktop properly (which desktop environment doesn't seem to matter). In the failure case the following happens: - The Plymouth Ubuntu splash gets displayed, but it looks distorted. Flickering horizontal artifacts are shown all over the screen, it looks a bit like a CRT Television with low signal. - When the desktop is loaded (via autologin), one can see short glimpses of its wallpaper, but after a few second the screen becomes black and remains that way. The monitor _does_ seem to receive a signal though. - It is possible to switch to TTYs and to use them, but they show similar artifacts like the Plymouth logo. - If I query the display information on the monitor's OSD when the screen is distorted, it reports a resolution of 1681x1050 or 1683x1050, which is 1-3 pixel bigger than the native horizontal resolution of the 22" LCD screen. Switching between different resolutions via entering 'xrandr --size 1024x768' blindly, followed by 'xrandr --size 1680x1050' brings up the native resolution properly. This does not happen on every boot, only in ~10-15% of the cases. I was not able to find any pattern so far in the occurence of this bug. The only thing I observed is that it _never_ happens when Windows XP is started, thus my assumption is that the bug is related to the xserver- xorg-video-radeon driver. I tried to specify the correct resolution explicitly on the kernel command line(adding video=DVI-I-1:1680x1050 ) but this has no positive effect. The monitor is connected via DVI. Below is a video attached that tries to show how the TTYs look when this bug occurs. Notice the abnormal blue lines, which are constantly flickering. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1010794] Re: Graphics/text corruptions in some applications with nouveau drivers
Hello Steve, I'm a bit confused, from my point of view the fix for this bug has been in Quantal since end of last November, and I had verified the fix at that time (see comments 191 - 193). Also testing again would be a bit hard since I'm on Raring since its release and I currently don't have a partition with Quantal on my system anymore. However, if it is really necessary, I could try to test with booting from an USB stick and selectively installing the respective updates. @Christopher BIOS update is a risky operation that I would rather like to avoid. In addition, the only change noted for that particular update is Support Xpress BIOS Rescue function, so it seems to me that this update will just add that described functionality and not fix any possible bugs (at least there is no hint that it contains any bugfixes) and thus could not have any positive effect on this bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168708] [NEW] Noveau driver isn't loaded anymore since kernel 3.2.0-39
Public bug reported: Hello, on this machine, since the newest kernel updates the Nouveau driver doesn't get loaded anymore (the graphic card is a Geforce 2 MX). The unfortunate consequence is that the screen resolution is limited to 1024x768. The last kernel version where the Nouveau driver works is 3.2.0-38 . If I run 3.2.0-39, 3.2.0-40 or the Quantal kernel 3.5.x, the Nouveau kernel modules are obviously not loaded during boot (the output of 'lsmod | grep nouveau' is empty). If I inspect the log files like /var/log/kern.log or /var/log/dmesg, I can't find any reference to the Nouveau driver and no possible hints why it wasn't loaded. I did some further testing after installing the current daily image (only possible by booting the usb stick with nomodeset). It seems to depend on the boot options if the system comes up properly with Nouveau drivers (and KMS). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1040495] [NEW] Graphical corruptions with Nouveau driver makes Quantal unusable
Public bug reported: Hello, since a few weeks I effectively can't run Quantal anymore due to strong graphical corruption when using the Nouveau driver (I have a Geforce GT430 card). To reproduce, I just have to boot a daily live image from a USB stick. The followings happens (as shown in the camera screenshots I'm gonna attach): - The boot logo (shown by Plymouth) is distorted - Then for some seconds a very weird looking corrupted screen appears - Then the desktop has loaded, but shows only corruptions instead of the wallpaper - The dock on the left screen side is shown correctly, but it's not possible to start/use any application - The mouse cursor isn't shown, due to shades of tooltips you can sometimes guess where the cursor might be This is a regression from Precise and early Quantal, where Nouveau drivers worked much better. To report this bug, I had to boot the daily live image with the nomodeset option. Even the new software-rendered Unity desktop you get in this case is barely usable due to heavy repainting issues, but that might be another bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1010794] [NEW] Graphics/text corruptions in some applications with nouveau drivers
Public bug reported: Hello, there are several serious graphic and text corruptions on Quantal with nouveau drivers (which are used by default). To reproduce: - Boot a Quantal live system or a fresh installation - Start software-center. - Move the mouse in its window or click anything. Result: Text and some graphics become massively corrupted (See also attached screenshots and short demo video). I have seen this kind of corruption so far in software-center, ubiquity- slideshow (during installation) and one time on filename text field of gtk-filechooser. Booting the system with nomodeset seems to make the problem go away, as well as installing the propritary Nvidia drivers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 909926] Re: corrupted graphics on unity login
I am also seeing this and can confirm that it appears with both Nouveau and Nvidia propritary drivers. For me it is a bit of less serious, since the corrupted screen content goes away after a few seconds and the Unity desktop is shown properly afterwards. I also took a photo with my camera of the screen during login (directly after entering my password) which I'm attaching here. Note that the screen obviously shows a random dump of previous content of the graphic card memory, some parts even contain screenshots of my previous Oneiric session where I downloaded the Precise daily image and prepared my pen drive (three or four reboots ago!). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855414] Re: Unity dash becomes very slow/laggy when opening certain webpages (Launchpad) in Firefox
A bit of errata: I took this report as chance to watch the behaviour in Natty more closely, and I have to admit that the described slowness/lagginess of the dash can also be seen in Natty, allthough a bit better than in Oneiric.
