[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2010-11-22 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I am no longer using the stock Lucid driver because it was unusable for
me. There is good news for the current upstream Mesa 7.9 and 7.10 ati
drivers though. They seem to work without a hitch, although a little
slower. This bug can be marked as fixed at least for me. The problem
Tiago is having seems unrelated to the problems I was having.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-11-18 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I found the answer. Apparently the implementation of projectedTextured
that WoW uses is broken in the 64bit drivers right now. It is already a
known issue. The workaround is to set projectedTextures to 0 in the WoW
Config.wtf file for now. This worked for me.

2009-11-15 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Paul: What version of wine are you using?
Did you try an OLDER 32bit LiveCD and update wine to latest (while running on
the CD). The current implementation on 2.6.31 kernel with 7.6 Mesa has many
problems including 3D freezing on my setup. I had to use 7.7.0-devel or try
intrepid to get good results. I also had to take ownership of the .wine user
folder for the LiveCD ubuntu user. Jaunty also has serious freezing issues
with the stock kernel and Mesa 7.6 and ATI video.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-11-14 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
One last post. I have tested the ATI OSS drivers on the Intrepid 32bit
Live CD and they worked great. Even better than Karmic. The
performance was also good and all textures showed up normally. I am
certain that the 64bit ones on that distribution still did not work for
me. So the problem seems to be with the architecture. The drivers for
the ATI R300 series in 64bit have obvious problems with 32bit 3D access.
I suspect it may be a failure to restore some 64bit register before
running the 32bit code.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-11-13 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
It would seem that there is a notable difference in how the 32bit version of
the driver and the 64bit version operate and even what media acceleration is
reported to be supported in glxinfo. I understand that if you are running
64bit you will have all those features automatically, but it is still nice to
see it there. I wonder if there might be a bug here. It seems that your card
supports TCL and you still suffer that problem, so it's isn't TCL causing it
then. I also noticed that you are using an Intel chipset motherboard; mine is
ATI/AMD chipset based, so that eliminates the motherboard as well. You aren't
even using ubuntu kernel sources. That leaves the only commonality being the
ATI video and 64bit arch.
Have you tried a 32bit LiveCD to see if it still has the problem. I haven't
had an opportunity to do that yet. I am downloading a desktop LiveCD of Karmic
to test it out. We may be noticing a strange bug that is brought on by the
64bit arch. If that is the case, I may be leaving the 64bit world soon.
There has been no advantages for my hardware and plenty of regressions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-11-13 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Well I have the answer.
It appears to be either a bug with the way wine implements its 32bit to 64bit
3D rendering or with the way the ATI drivers handle 3D requests from 32bit
programs. I suspect the latter, because I was able to run wine on 64bit with
proprietary drivers before, and running wine in a 32bit Live CD seems to work.
The rendering is terribly slow on the Karmic CD, but all the graphics renders
properly.
I also noticed that the glxinfo reports all the media acceleration features in
32bit mode, but not in 64bit mode. I will try the Jaunty 32bit CD as well to
see if the rendering speed is any better there. It would seem to indicate that
there is definitely an architecture problem with 64bit ATI OSS video drivers at
least for the R300 series. I'm not sure this would affect everyone, but most
definitely two cases with built-in laptop video have been reported so far.
Both using the R300 series driver.

Bryce, I think this should be reported upstream. What is the proper
channels?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-11-11 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I have received no feedback since I posted this last month. My curiosity is
whether this may be a weak ATI OSS video driver implementation issue exposed by
a 32bit/64bit conflict. The wine layer technically runs everything in 32bit
mode on a 64bit architecture running 3D against a 64bit driver which is a very
complicated situation to say the least.
Paul: What is your arch? 64 or 32 bit?
Please post the output of:
uname -r
uname -m
lspci
glxinfo

Once we have this info we may be able to figure out where it's going
wrong. In the mean time, I will test a 32bit live CD on my laptop to
see if that may bypass the issue. If the live CD works it may be a
problem with the OSS video driver's implementation of 32bit 3D rendering
in 64bit mode. If not, I suspect that it may be related to embedded
Mobility chips and an incomplete implementation of software TCL. I
remember that the closed source drivers on their final release for my
hardware finally started working properly, but until that driver they
also would not work right I'm just not sure what changed. i know the
9600 [RV350] is a desktop card which has hardware TCL, but my laptop
does not. I am curious to know whether or not your card has hardware
TCL Paul.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] [NEW] Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-10-19 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

While using wine version 1.1.31 from WineHQ repositories to load World
of Warcraft using the ati open source drivers all textures are
improperly rotated on the RS480 200M chipset such that the game is
unplayable. I know these drivers work fine on other chipsets. I have
loaded WoW just fine on the Radeon 9600 RV350 chipset and it is fully
accelerated and playable with all tectures showing normally. This
affect seems to also come with seriously degraded 3D performance.
Please let me know if you need further info. I will try to get a screen
capture to attach.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-10-19 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Attached is the image of what the screen looks like. There are also a number
of errors that come up constantly with:
err:d3d:state_undefined Undefined state.

It seems as if the GL state becomes lost somewhere along the way, so
none of the textures have correct coordinates.

This problem has pervaded every version of open source driver I have
tried over four editions of Kubuntu, but the latest closed source binary
(that supports r300 chipsets) worked fine. However, the recent closed
source drivers which support the newer kernels and xorg server don't
support r300 anymore. If it worked fine on the closed source driver and
it works fine on the open source driver of another ati chipset, it
should theoretically work on this chipset too, unless something is left
unimplemented.

In case the wine log may help here is the output:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 347569] Re: [RS482] low performance due to removal of _tnl_ProgramCacheInit()

2009-09-23 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I haven't tried that, but as I understand it, they are tightly
integrated and it's the DRM module that is crashing the system anyways,
not the radeon driver piece, however the driver DOES need to be updated
to solve the problem too. The radeon package only contains the xorg-
driver loadable module, which provides the DRM piece access to provide
the DRI interface for X programs. We need the DRM piece updated as the
current one is buggy. The old one mistreats non-TCL cards and misuses
the CPU, and the current one crashes often on TCL cards. I just don't
see being able to quickly pass a whole DRM/driver upgrade process as
this will affect everyone on all systems. BTW the driver/drm on that
site is mainly for radeon, so I'm not sure how the upgrade would affect
Intel/nv/nouveau drivers.

I have been testing these new drivers and DRM on a TCL enabled card and
they are stable and functional without needing any upgrade to Mesa. I
have had a crash running WoW on wine, but that was after playing for
hours in D3D mode. I couldn't even get into the world at all before
with the current drivers without kernel locking the system. The crash I
experienced only took down wine, not X, so it was more likely a wine
problem. If we could possibly pull these patches for the radeon branch
of DRM alone that would be great, but I think considerable core DRM
updates exist in this newer version which may prevent it. One more
thing to note: I noticed that if I run the 2.6.30 kernel with these new
modules the system runs fluidly and when I ran 2.6.28 I received random
freezing which would resume after a few seconds until one time I
received a total hard lock (numlock no longer worked). So there is a
problematic kernel portion involved in this too. I am running on ext4,
so that may be the problem there. This was in WoW of course, but I
expect similar results in any other intense 3D apps.

All OpenGL apps/games I've tried work just fine (extreme tux racer, warzone
2100, blender).
Oh, and for a real teaser, WoW runs at 10-20 FPS in a busy area in wine D3D
mode on my Radeon 9600 without needing to disable any extensions (I could not
get opengl mode to work unfortunately). All other 3D apps are equally fluid
and nice. It's not a superb card by any stretch of the imagination, so likely
all radeon cards should see impressive improvements. Still need to test
non-TCL cards though for the original problem of this thread. My non-TCL
laptop has been upgraded to karmic so this driver is not necessary anymore for
it. It runs fine.

The caveats are that I noticed a few graphical anomolies in wine d3d
with the texture handling, but nothing that causes tremendous harm. It
was working better than I've ever seen on OSS radeon drivers.

Correction to above. WoW OpenGL mode for wine works just fine with
these drivers with a few minor glitches: disappearing text inside
buildings and classic white minimap problem, but the D3D mode performs
equally well with less problems. The current drivers just hard lock the
system.

I regret not testing these changes more. They seem to increase hard lockups
for 3D activity considerably. After updating the drivers and dri to the
versions supplied by an independent ppa utilizing an updated driver from
upstream, no lockups occur anymore. The ppa comes from here:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406731] Re: Screen corruption when changing focus xserver-xorg-video-ati

2009-08-29 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Ok, this driver is amazing. All I can say is WOW! And it takes a LOT
to impress me.

I did have it crash the desktop once while loading virtualbox minimized
and unminimizing it, but that may have been virtualbox that did that
since I think that may have happened with the old driver too.

Everything feels 40% faster, and even glxgears shows a higher fps (I
know that doesn't mean much, but it does correlate). glxgears doesn't
cause the black blanking effect it did before, and I haven't been able
to reproduce the bug mentioned above. It appears that freeciv still
suffers from poor redraw, but I haven't tested it on a different
graphics driver to see if the driver is really the cause. glxgears
shows impressive graphics management where it runs at 30% cpu while
showing in the foreground at 3000+ fps I might add (the old driver
barely made 2200), but idles to 4% when obscured by other windows.
There is a negative side effect to this reduction in that the fps
results goes down, but if a window is obscured, that behaviour is
acceptable to me since the window is not visible anyways and it frees
cpu resources for other processes.

I also required nomodeset on the kernel line before to boot into a
graphical environment without crash. Now I can remove it without harm.
All in all, I vote to move this driver into Karmic as the main driver
for release. Of course, more testing is needed to ensure everyone has
as positive a result as I am having.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406731] Re: Screen corruption when changing focus xserver-xorg-video-ati

2009-08-29 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I am noticing more and more opengl bugs I ran into before which are also
fixed with this driver. There remains only one left, but I don't think
it will ever be resolved. epsxe runs opengl fullscreen in a semi
windowed mode and it flickers badly when desktop effects are on, but
suspending Desktop Effects is sufficient to resolve it. There was an
overlay bug previously with epsxe which required me to overlay a window
on it to see the opengl rendered screen clearly. This is also resolved.

Bryce: Since the latest libdrm update today that pulled in the new
libradeon library I have not experienced the inverted display problem
anymore. Prior to that update the 3.0.4 update of virtualbox no longer
initiated the problem, though glxgears was still causing it until today.
glxgears still causes another problem: the screen goes black until
exited. This may be a side effect of this bug. It is hard to say. I'm
not saying the problem is gone, just that I can no longer reproduce it.

This one was taken by ksnapshot (framebuffer grab) while the screen
corruption was occuring, but as you see it looks like a normal screen.
The program shown here is virtualbox as it consistently exposes this bug
once you open a vm in running state. There are a few other programs
that do that as well. glxgears can also initiate it I have noticed, so
it is most likely 3D overlay related,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406731] [NEW] Screen corruption when changing focus xserver-xorg-video-ati

2009-07-29 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

There is an error where the display will randomly corrupt to a negative
like image when switching focus between windows. Switching the focus
to another window will temporarily fix the problem, switching the focus
back initiates the problem again. This problem increases in frequency
the more windows that are opened. Opening glxgears seems to initate the
problem faster, but the problem happens less often when running in 3D
compositing mode. Running on Karmic with all updates installed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 347569] Re: [RS482] low performance due to removal of _tnl_ProgramCacheInit()

2009-06-11 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I'm starting to wonder if there is another separate driver problem hampering
the RS690 chipset. You did mention that your CPU wasn't being pinned high
anymore. I think that is the main fix that this patch brings, but my chipset
is RS482 Xpress 200M, so it may be a different problem as well. If you had
fglrx drivers installed previously did you run the command:
sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx

In order to make the new drivers function normally the proprietary
drivers need to be purged out first.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 347569] Re: [RS482] low performance due to removal of _tnl_ProgramCacheInit()

2009-06-11 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
590fps is normal on the RS690 chipset with the open source drivers. I
get around 570fps which is similar. So it looks like it is working to
me. My guess is that you are suffering from a power management problem
instead, which may be related to the new video power management code.
Besides that, your configuration sounds like it is functioning normally
to me. If you want faster 3d however, you'll need to initiate
performance mode. Unfortunately, the ondemand power saving mode isn't
smart enough to realize that you want faster 3d graphics, it just looks
at cpu demand. They should fix this problem eventually, but it may be
valid to submit a separate bug report about power management affecting
3d performance. That said, I don't think I experience this problem in
ondemand mode, but I probably don't have the same cpu, system board or
possibly driver that you do and I run in 64bit mode. I have reverted my
configuration to the stock jaunty drivers with the exception of the
patched mesa libraries.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 347569] Re: [RS482] low performance due to removal of _tnl_ProgramCacheInit()

2009-06-10 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Irom: Hmmm... It sounds to me like you are experiencing another issue
entirely. I'm afraid yours might not be resolved until the Radeon-Rewrite code
comes into action. What happens if you use the links above regarding
radeon-rewrite and the new radeon drivers? You will have to undo those changes
if you want other OpenGL apps to still run without freezing your system, but if
that solves your problem for glxgears and desktop effects then you may need to
wait for those drivers. Unless we can pull a patch from upstream. I think this
is the link:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/radeon

If you try this mesa and follow the directions on the page for the
radeon drivers too, to see if that fixes it. Then undo the mesa install
and see if maybe just the drivers alone may fix the issue. Please
report your findings.

Bryce: Thank you for compiling it in your ppa, I will try the new
packages you uploaded right away to make sure the patches applied well.

BTW If you are changing the summary, you can add high cpu to that. It
is a common result everyone experiences.

I have tested the packages in your ppa and they work fine. The speed is
improved in the same way. Desktop effects works, games work. I
haven't tested wined3d yet. My R300 always had graphical glitches in
wine with these drivers anyhow. Now I just need more testers.

2009-06-09 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Irom: Can you give me the output of the following commands at the
command line:

glxinfo | grep direct

glxinfo | grep OpenGL

It also looks like your driconf settings may not be their default
values. Try the default settings first, then experiment from there. It
is strange that glxgears thinks you are running in vsync mode, but your
results don't exhibit that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 347569] Re: [RS482] glxgears low fps

2009-06-08 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
After testing the patch on amd64, I have not noticed any instabilities,
and all GL programs tested so far seem to work normally and much faster.
The whole system is tremendously more responsive and my GLX gears get
double the scores on my Radeon 200M that it was getting with the
unpatched mesa. The results were immediately noticeable upon
installation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 347569] Re: [RS482] glxgears low fps

2009-06-08 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Irom Nike: You should be able to try out the .deb file posted above, but
be warned that it is an untested binary and may break something. If you
installed the jaunty-updates version of mesa, then you may need all the
mesa related packages updated with the patch versions. I am on my
laptop (a 64bit platform) right now and 300kms from home, but I could
assist in compiling a full set of 32bit binaries once I get home, since
my home server is a 32bit OS. I might even be able to compile them
remotely, but I have been having troubles with that computer since I
upgraded it to jaunty (Almost a cliche). It isn't jaunty's fault on
that machine, it has been sick for some time, the upgrade just exposed
its issues.

BTW. I have done more tests with that patch against desktop effects,
games, wined3d, etc. It has been rock solid for me, but my computer has
no TCL. I am uncertain whether a card with TCL would break or not.

Bryce Harrington: I am curious if a personal ppa is in order? Will this
patch get pushed to updates or backports? If not, I am ok to open a ppa
in the mean time for only those with cards that are suffering until the
radeon-rewrite code becomes the norm. In testing this code on my 200M
fairly well with all the 3d pressure of desktop effects with magic lamp
and desktop cube enabled, it hasn't crashed once and has run like a
dream. It is faster than I ever remember my card functioning and the
constant memory leak issues that I used to experience seem to have gone
away. Videos that used to pin my cpu (3d texture mapped) now don't even
make the computer busy at all. 3D video games run faster than I ever
remember them running, and likewise don't tax the computer anymore, and
the general stability of the system seems to have improved. Obviously,
because of the reduced cpu usage my computer consistently runs cooler
and the battery lasts longer. I would like those with TCL capabilities
to offer their experiences too. If it locks up TCL supporting cards, we
obviously can't send the patch to the updates repo, but we can reserve
it only to certain models in a ppa.

2009-06-07 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I also have a 200M chipset on a laptop and have been experiencing the
same troubles. I followed the link that sergks left there and installed
those components, I also installed the newer radeon drivers, but it
messed up my ability to run any GL programs that would run before, GLX
gears runs beautifully however, and so does desktop effects. I will try
using the older driver again to be sure that it isn't as a result of the
new driver alone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 347569] Re: [RS482] glxgears low fps

2009-06-07 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
More on the previous post. It appears that the updated Mesa does fix this
problem, but other programs like warzone 2100 and wine are built against mesa
1.4 libraries and they crash the whole system. The updated radeon drivers
don't seem to have any noticeable effect. In order to implement this fix with
the 1.6 base, just about every Mesa linked 3D program would also need updating.
I doubt this will ever happen, but the fix mentioned above can be applied to
the 1.4.0 branch. The details of the official patch are here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=ed4c6cbe017b4e8bacb7e012d4baaf77a20a2c33

We just need to backport it.
