[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1875015] Re: Displaylink is extremely slow in Xorg sessions
Hi Jeremyszu, That ppa fixed my issue! Is this going to prevent other upgrades? I am not super familiar with how different ppas for same packages would work. I imagine a later version will be marked as an update and override those updates. Daniel, Unfortunately I tried installing the kubuntu wayland packages and the experience was far worse on the dock. So I switched back to x as I'm a pretty big kde fan (I saw some reports that KDE wayland was a bit half baked as of yet across the web, I'm not really in the know). I might switch to gnome to try it out as it has been some years. When I do that I'll definitely try wayland again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1875015 Title: Displaylink is extremely slow in Xorg sessions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nouveau/+bug/1875015/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1001842] Re: No Audio from HDMI After Switching Monitor Off / On
I was able to work around this problem by using the xorg.conf option "CustomEDID". The goal is to essentially tell the system to pretend that your particular model of monitor/TV is always connected to the port in question. First, run this to determine the name of the video port in question: xrandr -d :0 --auto Then, generate an edid file with the 'get-edid' utility. You can pipe the output into the edid-decode utility to see it, and eventually output it to a file (I used /root/edid.bin). Then add something like this to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, inside the "Device" section: Option "UseHotplugEvents" "False" Option "ConnectedMonitor" "HDMI-0" Option "UseDisplayDevice" "HDMI-0" Option "CustomEDID" "HDMI-0:/root/edid.bin" Where HDMI-0 is the video port name you got from xrandr. If you don't already have an xorg.conf file, you'll need to make one somehow. The "nvidia-xconfig" executable worked for me, but I'm sure it will vary depending on the video card and driver in question. WARNING: I've read that using the CustomEDID option with an incorrect edid file (such as one for the wrong monitor or a different port) can cause hardware damage! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1001842 Title: No Audio from HDMI After Switching Monitor Off / On To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1001842/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1324361] [NEW] Screen blank after resuming from suspend
Public bug reported: I can successfully suspend my Ubuntu session. After hitting the power button on my desktop to wake up, the computer and monitor turn back on ok, but the screen comes up blank. The mouse is present and can move, but there is nothing to interact with. I also cannot switch to other terminal modes with Ctrl-Alt-F2, etc. The only way to recover is to hard boot. I tried booting with both S1 and S3 power management modes set in the bios; S1 does not suspend at all (gives errors) and S3 suspends but does not wake up properly as described. I am running Ubuntu 14.04 with Gnome Shell 3.12.1, but the issue persists with standard Unity Ubuntu as well. I have dual monitors with an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS rev 3 PCI express adapter using nouveau drivers. I am running full disk encryption; home folder is not encrypted. Any advise is much appreciated. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org
I have discovered a useful workaround: Splashtop. It is a much more functional remote desktop solution than VNC or Vino. It has sound. You can play 3D games over it and even Second Life works beautifully. And it's available in the Ubuntu Software Center for free. This really should be the default remote desktop. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 521877]
Retitling this bug, since it affects current X servers as well, though possibly only randr-1.2-capable drivers as mentioned in comment 63 and the immediately preceding comments. This needs fixing. Each time I set up a new system, I end up with incredibly tiny fonts, and I end up having to manaully fix (and hardcode) the DPI to use the correctly autodetected value. The server already has a flag to override DPI with a constant value (namely -dpi). It doesn't need a flag to go back to autodetection, because it needs to do that by default. Nothing needs the X server to hardcode 96 DPI; browsers can already do that if they want to. (Chrome already does so, in a misguided attempt to force a constant ratio between px and pt across all websites. Firefox still seems to respect the system DPI by default, AFAICT.) Meanwhile, having the correct DPI makes fonts have reasonable sizes, and makes 100% zoom in various applications (such as evince) match the physical dimensions of a page. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/521877 Title: [gm45] wrong screen size detected on X200s To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/521877/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 832624] Re: cursor jumping to screen border
On the documentation front, I'd also have to mention that the xinput_calibrator still sets the Swap Axes property if you have a device that needs them to be swapped. I have an eGalax touchscreen (0xeef:0001) with swapped axes that also happens to not always send the valuators for both axes between each pair of SYN events, and I'd be embarrassed to admit how long I've spent trying to track this down. Anyway, I'm attaching a patch that resolves the issue for me. I've used the old_vals valuator_mask as a temporary inside EvdevProcessValuators, so the swap still works when values for both axes *are* available. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772873] Re: Vino does not work with compositing
The free drivers are crap. Ubuntu is a seriously awesome Linux distribution and a lot of people use it to introduce newbies to Linux. We can't put our best foot forward with a broken remote desktop solution because nobody wants to accept responsibility for the problem. If this was a tiny distro like Tiny Core things would be different, but Ubuntu is a multi-national corporation and there's just no excuse for this. You guys need to get together with someone at AMD and work this problem out instead of just throwing up your hands and saying it's AMD's problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/772873 Title: Vino does not work with compositing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/772873/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

No... it affects only older, integrated nvidia cards. My new nvidia card is unaffected, same with my friend's. If it were all nvidia products, people would be knocking down doors at canonical and nvidia, flooding them with complaints. It affects a good number of people, but most fix the problem with an older nvidia driver and a few more with BIOS configurations. Very few cannot walk away with the problem worked around. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 753144] Re: focused, or maximized windows blank
In time, I've learned that the ubuntu devs don't care very much about certain bugs. Take celestia for example: it needs to depend on the textures pack so that the planets other than earth have textures, but in a year and a half or more, nothing has been done. This nvidia bug affects a small percentage of users, and nvidia knows about it, so the ubuntu devs are just going to let nvidia handle it in their time frame. I'm sure that there is a way the blank windows could be worked around by modifying the graphics stack a little, but don't count on it happening. They have bigger bugs to squash most likely. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 753144] Re: focused, or maximized windows blank
In every case thus far, the old drivers did fix the problem. This problem only applies to certain models of older integrated nVidia cards from what we can tell. Unity is not the problem, I don't know why you think disabling that will help. Unity just manages the windows, it doesn't draw them. However, when you disable compiz (and, by extension, all related special effects) the problem has gone away because you are no longer accelerating the graphics with the GPU, if I remember correctly. So, Ubuntu Classic (No Effects) is what you're looking for I believe, but as much as I hate blamestorming, I really do believe this is nVidia's fault and they should fix it. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 753144] Re: focused, or maximized windows blank
Thats a lame reason. This is the first generation of unity for desktop. Of course it will have limitations, but it is still a huge improvement on the old gnome desktop. Use a different notes app or ask around in the ubuntu forums for a workaround on that, but that is the worst reason anyone has yet given.. and i've heard plenty of bad ones. This is the way forward for ubuntu, and it's better than gnome shell from what reviews have said in their comparisons. Same bug applies for me with a new installed Ubuntu 10.10. Nvidia Gtx 460 and core i7. I can reproduce the behaviour mentioned by Reason (killing and restarting gnome-settings-daemon as root). Changing to the the nouveau driver didn't fix the problem for me. Haven't tried the crappy workaround so far. I have reinstalled Ubuntu at least three times with different configurations without success. Also I have a parallel Ubuntu installation upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 which does not show the bug. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 133060] Re: Synaptic touchpad fails to register some of the taps for tap-to-click
Well, the fix worked again, and I now have a patched x64 version of 1.2.2. Thanks again. FYI, on my end the patch applies at line 2090. There isn't even a line 2518 in that file. The difficulty for me (who doesn't really know what he's doing) is tracking where the patch is placed as the driver is updated. Does anyone know if this will ever just be incorporated in the driver itself, or where I should go to request that? Previous posts said it had been fixed upstream, but clearly it hasn't been. Also, it's not an Ubuntu or Debian issue, but a universal problem for this touchpad (I'm assuming the same in the e1405/e1505/e1705) in Linux (same poor functionality across distros). I'm finding that in Lucid (10.04), synaptics 1.2.2-1ubuntu4 is still no better in terms of accurately registering tap clicks, no matter how I tweak synclient settings. If anyone can walk me through a patch of this newer driver, it would be appreciated. I can no longer use my old patched version. the xserver task can be closed, and instead the issue should be raised directly to NVIDIA, ATI, and virtualbox to provide the missing support. If three vendors are having the same problem, then the problem is probably with the Vino server, not with all three vendors' products. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562468] [NEW] No way to save video configuration in Lucid Beta 2
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg In Lucid there is no user-facing way to save the video configuration because of a catch 22. Here is how to replicate: 1. Go to System - Preferences - Monitors 2. Get an error: It appears that your graphics card does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics vendor's tool instead? 3. Click Yes 4. NVidia X Server Settings program is launched 5. Change some settings 6. NVidia X Server Settings can only save to xorg.conf. Go to X Server Display Configuration - Save to X Configuration File 7. Get error because Lucid does not use xorg.conf: Failed to parse existing X config file 8. Click OK 9. Get prompted to specify the location of the file 10. Can't specify the location because it doesn't exist 11. Click Save anyways 12. Get error: Unable to remove old X config backup So the catch 22 is: I can't use Ubuntu's tool to enable my second monitor because my video device isn't supported by it, however I can't use NVidia's tool because Ubuntu Lucid doesn't support xorg.conf. So, every time I reboot I have to launch NVidia's configuration tool and re-configure all of my video settings. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5
I believe one of the problems with this bug's fix is that it can't be nominated for Lucid because the option for Lucid is not available when clicking Nominate. Another problem is that there's not anyone whose job it is to manage the project of fixing this bug. Fixing this problem involves a number of people from different projects to work together because: * The remote desktop solution in Ubuntu uses the VNC backend which can't read from hardware accelerated displays. The VNC project guys would have to fix this and it would probably involve a lot of work. * There isn't currently a solution for remote display of hardware rendered displays that can be easily integrated into Ubuntu. The Ubuntu project coordinators would have to find a useful product for integration. * NVIDIA can't fix the problem because it's not a problem with their display driver or their hardware -- that stuff is all doing its job as it should. While I agree that a fix would be good, the fix isn't so much a fix as creation of an entirely new feature. In the meantime I propose one of these workarounds: * Inform the user when they turn on the remote desktop feature, that it won't work if desktop effects is turned on. * Alternatively, the remote desktop software could be scripted such that when someone connects to a machine that has desktop effects enabled, the effects could be automatically switched off for that remote control session, and then switched back on after disconnect. For those who need remote control of their Ubuntu machines, you'll just have to live without desktop effects until one of the above solutions has been implemented, and I'm speculating that it won't happen for some time because it seems that the Ubuntu project coordinators don't care about the 30% of the user experience that consists of aesthetics enough to work out a reasonable solution. -- Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver
Hi, Doing nothing is not a solution. Either everything needs to work together or something needs to be changed. There are four possible outcomes to this debacle: 1. Do nothing and: a) ...ignore the problem because fixing it would be too hard. b) ...blame someone else (problem with drivers etc) 2. If the Vino server is not going to work with Desktop Effects enabled, there should be a notification when the user enables the Remote Desktop feature telling them that it won't work unless Desktop Effects is disabled. 3. Add a script to the Lock Screen command that shuts off Compiz Fusion and replaces it with Metacity (something like export DISPLAY=:0.0 ; killall -9 compiz.real ; metacity --replace ) -- then add a script to the Unlock Screen command that turns Compiz Fusion back on. 4. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg (This bug report arises from Ubuntu Question 75465 : https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xclock/+question/75465 ) This bug dates to at least 2006. Basically, running xclock -digital should give you a small window with a digital clock. Adding the option -twentyfour is supposed to force the clock to display the time in 24-hour format. Similarly, the option -twelve is supposed to force the clock to display the time in 12-hour format. What actually happens is that xclock's digital output will be the same regardless of the -twelve or -twentyfour flag passed. For me and the original poster of Question 75465, the time is always displayed in twelve-hour format.
