[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1798868] Re: Compiz Crashed with SIGSEGV [Radeon]
** Description changed: + SEE WORKAROUND AT END OF POST + Symptoms: On login, the desktop takes a long time to load, and when it does, everything blinks. It is possible (but difficult) to open a terminal and execute commands, through the right-click desktop menu. I first noticed the issue in mid-July of 2018. System: Acer 5100 Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit) Graphics card: VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS482M [Mobility Radeon Xpress 200] Believed to be mesa-related, as symptoms very similar to bug #1741447 and #1735594. I have been informed by a mesa developer that my issue is different because that bug affects Intel GPUs. This system has a Radeon GPU. Log files are as attached to bug #1795709. That bug was declared invalid by Apport because it says I don't have the necessary debug packages installed. However, I could not find the debug packages in the repository, so that is why I am submitting this report manually. Many thanks for any help. + + Edit 29/12/2018: + WORKAROUND + This bug is still present. However, I present a workaround. It is aimed at relatively inexperienced users like me. It guides the user through downgrading/rolling back affected packages to the most recent known working versions. + 1. Navigate to /var/log/apt in a file explorer. Open the logs until you find the offending mesa updates. In my case, the updates were installed on 15/07/18. + 2. Copy and paste the log into a text file on your desktop. Close the log. + 3. In the text file, do a ctrl+F search on "mesa" to highlight all instances of mesa-related packages. Keep these lines and delete the others. Each line should have this kind of format: + libgles2-mesa:amd64 (17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1, 18.0.5-0ubuntu0~16.04.1) (exact package name/version numbers may differ). The first number in brackets is the version of the package that you had before, the second number is the version it was upgraded to. You should end up with a list of such lines. + 4. The earlier versions of these packages can be downloaded from Launchpad. I don't know how to find them using links/searches, but the URLs look like this: + https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/amd64/libgles2-mesa/17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1. You will have to alter the url according to your architecture, package name and package version required. + 5. You will see a page with a download link on the right-hand side for a .deb file. Make a new folder on your desktop called "mesa-install" and download the .deb file there. + 6. Scroll down, and on the left, you will see any dependencies of this package. If any of them say " (=version number)" then you must make a note of these packages on your list of packages to download and install. If they have a ">=" sign, or no version number given, ignore them. + 7. Repeat steps 4 - 6 for all the packages on your list, placing the .deb files in the "mesa-install" folder. + 8. MAKE SURE ALL IMPORTANT FILES ON YOUR SYSTEM ARE BACKED UP. + 9. Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T). + 10. Type "sudo dpkg -R --install /home//Desktop/mesa-install/ + Replace " with your username. This command installs all .deb files in that folder. + 11. Reboot PC. + 12. Log in to a Unity session. Rejoice in the fact that it now works (hopefully). Assuming it is now working, you need to make sure that the packages you downgraded are not subsequently upgraded automatically by Ubuntu. Ignore any offers of automatic updates until you have completed all the steps. + 13. Open a terminal and type: + sudo apt-mark hold + where "" is the name of the first package you downgraded. Press enter, enter password, etc. You should receive confirmation that the package has been held. + 14. Repeat step 13 for all packages on your list. + + Good luck to all others who have faced this problem, and fingers crossed + for a bug fix! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1798868 Title: Compiz Crashed with SIGSEGV [Radeon] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/1798868/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1741447] Re: Unity / Compiz in a crash loop after login, after mesa updates of 2018-01-04
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1735594 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1735594 I can confirm I have what I believe to be this bug in 16.04. All packages updated to current. Have also downloaded latest 16.04 LTS release .iso and run it off a USB drive. Same symptoms. Originally, the issue was confined to Firefox, which crashed on many websites. The error related to "r300_dri.so". I disabled WebGL and this fixed the problem. However, as of mid-July, I have the same problems as other users (flashing icons at login, etc.). My logs tell me I installed a mesa update on 15/07/18. Acer 5100 Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit) Graphics card: VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS482M [Mobility Radeon Xpress 200] I have tried to force a version downgrade of libgl1-mesa-dri in Synaptic, but the only option it gives me is a really old version - I just want to roll back to, say, February. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1508870] Re: Font corruption (gets bold) when scrolling in Eclipse
I think this is not related to the Intel graphics driver (I'm having the same problem with a nvidia video card). Workarounds that worked for me: 1. Turn off antialiasing (fonts will be extremely ugly) OR 2. Add this to eclipse.ini: --launcher.GTK_version 2 So it looks like a GTK3 problems. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1508870 Title: Font corruption (gets bold) when scrolling in Eclipse To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eclipse/+bug/1508870/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1095686] Re: xorg needs to be updated to allow quantal xserver stack to be installed
How does one use or apply this fix? AIUI this is the same problem described here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/287797/xserver-xorg-lts-quantal-will-remove-many-packages I have installed the xserver-xorg-lts-precise metapackage but this has not installed anything else as I am currently running the Precise X stack. The above seems not to be a fix. AFAICS, what it does is conveniently allow one to /recover/ from the problem -- it does not prevent the installation of the Quantal X stack from removing loads of necessary components, it just makes it easier to revert back from the Quantal X stack to the Precise X stack. Do I understand correctly? If so, it is not a fix. It does not enable one to upgrade an installed 12.04 or 12.04-1 system to 12.04-2, i.e. install the 12.10 versions of X.org. /That/ is the bug that is really being reported here AIUI. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1095686 Title: xorg needs to be updated to allow quantal xserver stack to be installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1095686/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914713] Re: virtual display memory too small, primary display resolution incorrect
resolved by performing these steps: Re: remove xrandr 1.2 and let ati setup my screens I ran into the same problem last week and was just trying to remember how I did it because a coworker wanted to know. So for your and his benefit... Edit /etc/ati/amdpcsdb In the section labeled [AMDPCSROOT/SYSTEM/DDX] add this: Code: EnableRandR12=Sfalse Also, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the Device section add: Code: Option EnableRandR12 false Hope that helps. thanks to ToeBee at the Ubuntu forums. then. run catalyst control manager in administration mode and set desktops to single desktop (multiple display(s)) - should be the bottom option. You then need to reboot to save changes. At the terminal type: sudo aticonfig --dtop=horizontal and follow the prompts. You should get an error message. After this you can then change to a multi display desktop by rebooting and changing settings through the catalyst control center. Not sure all the above is needed, but they are what i did to resolve the issue. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New = Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/914713 Title: virtual display memory too small, primary display resolution incorrect To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/914713/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914713] [NEW] virtual display memory too small, primary display resolution incorrect
Public bug reported: Occurs when adding a secondary display to the system. Both screens have been set to there standard resolution. When applying changes the following error message occurs: required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(3600, 1080), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1920, 1920) I am looking to create an extended desktop. The system does not pick up on all graphics cards properly, i.e. does not recognise the two secondary graphics cards. It seems like the system is attempting to create one screen width wise and two screens vertically based on the size of the requested display compared to the actual requested size. The main monitor should be 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz and the second monitor that is being added should be 1280x1024 @ 60Hz. The primary monitor, with secondary turned off looses 45mm of screen space widthwise and 26mm screen space vertically. It is centered the display is 24 inches from bottom left to top right. It would be first a benefit to get the secondary display working regardless of display size. When reducing resolution of the secondary display as much as possible it will accept the changes but display the secondary desktop in a small box embedded into the desktop on the primary monitor. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549727] Re: [10.04] Touchpad stops working after login
I just upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 to 11.04 Natty and hit this issue. The solution that worked for me seems a bit simpler than some of the ones offered earlier so hopefully this will help someone. Hit Alt-F2 Type gconf-editor and hit return Browse to desktop/gnome/peripherals key Look for your touchpad - mine looked like SybPS@47@2... Uncheck the disable while other device exists option Bingo! Presumably the problem was that Thinkpads have two built-in pointing devices. While the solution turned out to be simple, it took me a good hour to figure it out and the earlier comments in this thread helped me to start looking in the right place. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 718767] Re: [i945gme] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x00007272)
Here's the requested dmesg output. The only difference made by updates is the mouse pointer now moves, though everything else is frozen. I've noticed that leaving the machine alone means it won't crash; I've mostly been using it for Web surfing, this is the activity I've been doing every time it's crashed so far--wouldn't read anything into that, however, since that's the machine's workload the majority of the time. The last crash happened when browsing /r/programming on Reddit (so I doubt Flash could have been related). Aside from this, the crashes appear to be random. The machine is still in a crashed state so, if you're quick, I can run any commands you'd like/gather more files. ** Attachment added: dmesg.txt https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/718767/+attachment/1861287/+files/dmesg.txt ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/718767 Title: [i945gme] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x7272) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

How was the bug reporting tool crashing? That sounds bad. It was very confusing, multiple dialogue boxes and I kept just pressing 'Report problem' on all of them until I got this bug report (I think the other reports were the same as this). Did you have an actual system freeze, or did the error pop up but you didn't spot any obvious symptoms to go with it? The errors appeared after a reboot, the system has been freezing randomly with 11.04, but in this instance I cannot remember whether the reboot was simply because of a kernel update or because I had to hard reset. I'll leave the bug status as 'Incomplete' for now, since I'm not sure of the details. Next time it happens I'll record exactly what happens and re-open. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/718767 Title: [i945gme] GPU lockup 1d5b69ea (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x7272) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 386532] Re: [Jaunty 9.04, Radeon X600] Extending desktop across two monitors works intermittently
I've tested using the latest Karmic LiveCD (20090910), however as the versions of xserver-xorg-video-radeon and such in the PPA are the same as the ones in the official repos I did *not* add the PPA above to the live session's sources.list. The bug has changed, in that instead of dual-screen working intermittently it now doesn't work at all. Here are the steps I'm using to reproduce: 1. downloaded Karmic daily LiveCD (20090910), checked md5 sum of .iso file, rebooted using LiveCD, tested Disc for errors before booting into the live session; 2. run gnome-display-properties; 3. un-check 'Mirror screens'; 4. drag monitors, so iiyama is on the left, Philips on the right; 5. click [Apply]; 6. the following message appears: Monitor Resolution Settings has detected that the virtual resolution must be set in your configuration file in order to apply your settings. Would you like Screen Resolution to set the virtual resolution for you? (Recommended) [No] [Yes] 7. choose [Yes], then click [Ok] on dialog requesting the user logs out and in again; 8. log out, X restarts, desktop reloads; 9. notice that the desktop has returned to mirrored state; 10. re-run gnome-display-properties, notice that settings applied on last run were not saved and that the 'Mirror screens' check box is checked again; 11. start from (1) again, and the same sequence will repeat, including the question about setting the virtual resolution in the configuration file; Note: step (4) doesn't actually need to be completed, 'Mirror screens' can be un-checked but the monitors not moved. Am still including that step as it was something I did on almost every attempt at getting gnome- display-properties to work. Another note: on first run gnome-display-properties does add a virtual resolution to xorg.conf (which I am assuming is the 'configuration file' the dialog was referring to), it just ignores it on every subsequent run. ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/31635998/Xorg.0.log -- [Jaunty 9.04, Radeon X600] Extending desktop across two monitors works intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386532 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Dear MrAuer, unfortunately, you should open a new bug report. Since I have disabled UXA then my Jaunty system seems to be fine - that is there have been no more crashes yet. I have been using the alpha 4 of Karmic at the moment to see if my bug is present there - as I feel finding it there is more important that finding if UXA was the problem on Jaunty. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 386532] [NEW] [Jaunty 9.04, Radeon X600] Extending desktop across two monitors works intermittently
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Xorg version: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 Ubuntu version: 9.04 After restarting (either the computer or Xorg), then logging-in, the desktop does not always expand across both the monitors hooked-up to the ATi X600 graphics card. Instead the left screen is mirrored on both monitors. Also, it seems possible to move the mouse into where the desktop should extend (if that makes sense!) Both monitors are set to 1600x1200 resolution, configured by gnome- display-properties. Crazy stuff I've tried to fix this: 1. Using xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.12.99+git20090611.d095bb31-0ubuntu0tormod2 and xserver-xorg-video-radeon - 1:6.12.99+git20090611.d095bb31-0ubuntu0tormod2 from Tormod Volden's PPA (https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa?field.name_filter=field.status_filter=publishedfield.series_filter=jaunty) I still have these installed at time of filing this bug report. Obviously, I'm using the open source ATi drivers, since the X600 is no longer supported. 2. Tried using a Jaunty Live CD with the instructions under 'Testing with a live CD/media' at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge but it didn't work*. * In fact: both stock Ubuntu Xorg and the bleeding edge packages initially failed in a completely different way to what's described in this bug, however I believe that is a different problem, so will try to describe it in a separate bug report. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 386532] Re: [Jaunty 9.04, Radeon X600] Extending desktop across two monitors works intermittently
Attaching .xsession-errors Interestingly it seems that loading Compiz is failing and falling back to Metacity. Am going to try restarting to see if the desktop extending works when Compiz works. ** Attachment added: .xsession-errors http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27840962/.xsession-errors -- [Jaunty 9.04, Radeon X600] Extending desktop across two monitors works intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386532 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

That last comment may have been a red herring, after restarting the computer the desktop has extended across both monitors but Compiz has failed with the same error. -- [Jaunty 9.04, Radeon X600] Extending desktop across two monitors works intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386532 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
