[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 686216] Re: Brightness is all the way down at login screen on HP Pavilion dm4
From the Fedora bug report: I have an HP Pavilion DM4-1060US. If I remove rhgb quiet from the boot line, it appears that the blank screen begins when the kernel initially configures the console framebuffer. Once the full X server starts via gdm, display is visible. Similar to Description above, adding nomodeset to the kernel command line causes the boot messages to remain visible, although X cannot start because it depends on kernel modesetting in order to operate. The Fedora reporter also tried Ubuntu 10.10, and attached many log files, which may be useful to his report. Contrary to what he says, though, and in key with what the Ubuntu bug description says, using Fn+F3 to increase brightness is enough to see Plymouth on my laptop (a dm4-1170sf). And maybe it's useful to restate that this bug only affects Plymouth: when X is started, brightness is always OK. Still happens with kernel 2.6.38rc5, and with xorg-edgers PPA enabled, FWIW. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/686216 Title: Brightness is all the way down at login screen on HP Pavilion dm4 ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 683648] [NEW] i915 driver is in really bad shape in Maverick
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel [Sorry for the silly title. ;-)] The Intel driver in Maverick (2.12.0) is almost unusable for i915 because of redraw issues. Damaged areas don't seem to get repainted as needed, which mostly happens with scrolling areas (web pages, text processing, this kind of small use cases...). I've personally solved the issue by moving to xorg-edgers PPA since the release, but for most i915 users, Maverick will be a no-go. I know that fixes were committed upstream quickly after Maverick was released, which made all glitches go away. I'm not sure they are present in 2.13.0, though. So I don't know what should be done, but from i915 owner's POV, I don't think Maverick can be worse. Feel free to close this as Won't Fix if you consider this as too messy, but OTOH if you need some testing of package, I can do it. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- i915 driver is in really bad shape in Maverick https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/683648 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575724] [NEW] /etc/dbus-1/system.d/xserver-xorg.conf allows D-BUS interfaces on all objects
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg In Lucid (xserver-xorg1:7.5+5ubuntu1), /etc/dbus-1/system.d/xserver- xorg.conf reads: busconfig policy context=default allow own=org.x.config.display0/ allow send_destination=org.x.config.display0/ allow send_interface=org.x.config.display0/ allow own=org.x.config.display1/ allow send_destination=org.x.config.display1/ allow send_interface=org.x.config.display1/ allow own=org.x.config.display2/ allow send_destination=org.x.config.display2/ allow send_interface=org.x.config.display2/ /policy /busconfig If I'm not mistaken, this is plain wrong, because the 'send_interface' lines will allow any sender to talk to any destination. From e.g. bug 318753 (The D-Bus policy needs checking!): *IMPORTANT* you MUST include send_destination on ALL allow or deny tags. Omitting it is a SERIOUS bug! !-- !! SERIOUS BUG !! -- allow send_interface=x.y.z / This allows any service to receive method calls of the given interface, not just your own service! It also implicitly allows any service to receive method calls with no interface specified, in case they match this interface! Using the above means you are potentially allowing exploiting of a different service. DO NOT DO IT! So I'd say the file should be changed to: busconfig policy context=default allow own=org.x.config.display0/ allow send_destination=org.x.config.display0 send_interface=org.x.config.display0/ allow own=org.x.config.display1/ allow send_destination=org.x.config.display1 send_interface=org.x.config.display1/ allow own=org.x.config.display2/ allow send_destination=org.x.config.display2 send_interface=org.x.config.display2/ /policy /busconfig Not sure this as actual consequences currently, but better check this. You may have a look there and see whether that seems to be the same bug, but the best would be to get Apport upload necessary information to a new report, and explain there why you don't mark it as a duplicate of this one. Often, this kind of X crashes seem to come from a kernel bug; so best would be that Apport detects a kernel oops and report it that way... -- [i945gm] Xorg assert failure: X: ../../src/i830_batchbuffer.h:79: intel_batch_emit_dword: Assertion `pI830-batch_ptr != ((void *)0)' failed. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447159 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

That's a very annoying bug I've been tracking for some time. I had already reported it separately some time ago, and provided upstream with some additional debugging information there. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 365994] Re: [i915] X freeze due to end of aperture kernel issue
Yes, the freeze still exists in Karmic, but it comes from another bug. I'm marking this one as Fix Released for Linux, since a fix was released via Intel X.org/Linux developers. I've continued tracking the problem upstream, and you can have a look at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26974 if you are interested. I'm not sure were the real problem happens in your log. The (EE) messages are not fatal IIRC, I've been seeing them in working environments.
