For others that read this bug comment, see:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack
for information on xserver-xorg-lts-raring.
I installed via:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-lts-raring
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-lts-raring

Short lived euphoria...

Loading up memory (opening SeaMonkey, Firefox, Konquer, Chromium, Opera,
and VMPlayer w/WinXP guest) created the issue again. Attached
screenshot.

@Timo: thanks Timo.
Yesterday I switched to xorg-edgers that seems to be working. Later today

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise

2013-01-04 Thread NoOp
Updated my kernel today:

3.2.0-36-generic-pae #56-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 2 22:09:45 UTC 2013 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux

and it was very nice not to have to run NVIDIA-
Linux-x86-96.43.23-pkg1.run on reboot. Simply installed the kernel
update, rebooted and 96.43.23-0ubuntu0.1 activated worked w/o issues.
I'd tag this as fixed.

@Dave: thanks. Upstream (Debian) have as well:

 Published on 2012-09-19 === Sept 19 - two days after the 'Certified'
nvidia release.
Changelog
nvidia-graphics-drivers-legacy-96xx (96.43.23-2) unstable; urgency=low
https://launchpad.net/debian/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-legacy-96xx/96.43.23-2

Currently I'm installing from the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.23-pkg1.run,
but it's a PITA rebuilding it every time a new proposed kernel comes
out. I've not tried the Debian version (yet).

error. Now that I've reinstalled libvdpau, I suspect that the next
reinstall of 96.43.23 will show the same.

However, I do see these:

Reinstalling all of my mesa packages borked my DRI:

Reinstalled 96.43.23 got DRI (and GL vertex buffer object) back.

@Flames: PEBAC? Were you trying for PEBKAC or similar?

I realize what vdpau is used for. However:

$ apt-cache depends mplayer | grep libvdpau

@giardia: libvdpau1 error now appears on the 96.43.23 that I did. This is due
to reinstalling libvdpau1 before the reintall:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise

2012-09-16 Thread NoOp
12.04 32bit 3.2.0-31-generic-pae:

GL_RENDERER   = Quadro4 900 XGL/AGP/SSE2
GL_VERSION= 1.4 (1.5.8 NVIDIA 96.43.23)

Prior to modifying the xorg.conf (created by: 'sudo nvidia-xsconfig then
modified by 'gksu nvidia-settings' my ~/.xsession-errors was continuously being
flooded with:
/usr/bin/compiz (core) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
warnings.

I modified the Screen settings in the xorg.conf to include:
Option AddARGBGLXVisuals True
Rebooted (just to be sure) the messages are gone.

glxgears w/nouveau:
4005 frames in 5.0 seconds = 800.934 FPS
4248 frames in 5.0 seconds = 849.541 FPS
4240 frames in 5.0 seconds = 847.968 FPS
3910 frames in 5.0 seconds = 781.843 FPS

glxgears w/96.43.23:
13895 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2778.148 FPS
14700 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2937.791 FPS
14096 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2818.622 FPS

The good news is that it does install work (after removing nouveau)
glxgears is now comparable to my 11.10 install (see my comment #88 for

GL vertex program:yes
GL fragment program:  no
GL vertex buffer object:  yes
GL framebuffer object:no
GL version is 1.4+:   yes

Unity 3D supported:   no

But that's not really a problem for me as I run gnome-shell instead of
Unity it's just nice to get actual video performance back! Thanks
Aaron Plattner (nvidia). Now if we can get jockey updated to include
96.43.23 I'll be happy(ier).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread NoOp
While I know that glxgears is not a reliable benchmark, the following
demonstrates the issue between nvidia-96 and nouveau. I have two
machines with the same hardware, and both use an nVidia Quatro4 900 XGL.
Both are running as non-Unity (gnome-classic) both are set to use
compiz identical (I can easily rotate the desktops w/Ctrl-Alt-mouse
flib between w/Ctrl-Alt-rightarrow etc). The difference is that one is
running 11.04 w/nVidia-96, the other is 12.04 w/nouveau. Running
glxgears on each one results in:

Glxgears on the on running 11.04

Quite a difference in performance between the two.

 That said: I fully realise that Ubuntu can't release an updated nvidia-96
until nVidia does. And from following this nvidia forum thread, it doesn't look
like it will be anytime soon:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179489
  http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179489page=6
So for those of us that require nvidia-96, my suggestion is to follow the nvida
forum thread instead of creating a forum here.

2011-11-05 Thread NoOp
Just simply logging in via a remote terminal, the remote allow/refuse
window is blank. Window decoration is apparent. No difference if using
Ubuntu, Ubuntu Classic, Ubuntu Classic (No effects). Note: I'm using
nvidia-96, so Unity is not possible in 11.04 (only Unity 2D w/11.10).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-08-31 Thread NoOp
Boot issues apparently not related to nvidia-96 proposed
(96.43.20-0ubuntu1~natty1). I temporarily resolved the boot issue by adding
'nopat' in grub2 per:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/537218
[ Failed to allocate video memory nvidia-current on lucid]

Workaround:

$ gksu gedit /etc/default/grub

modify:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=nopat

save.

$ sudo update-grub

reboot.

I've cold-booted rebooted multiple times now each time works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-08-30 Thread NoOp
I've just finished upgrading a system from 10.10 to 11.04. Initially I
couldn't get compiz 3D working with the new nvidia-96 driver
(96.43.20-0ubuntu1~natty1 ). However after modifying my compiz settings
to match those on this 10.10 machine (with the addition of turning on
OpenGL) and rebooting all is working again (Ubuntu Classic). Video card
is:

  *-display
description: VGA compatible controller
product: NV25GL [Quadro4 900 XGL]
vendor: nVidia Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@:01:00.0

resources: irq:16 memory:fd00-fdff
memory:d000-d7ff memory:dc78-dc7f memory:fe9e-fe9f

I'm able to do Cube Reflection and Deformation, Wobbly Windows (tested
turned back off), Desktop Cube, Rotate Cube, etc., etc. Thank's Alberto!
Now I can go ahead and upgrade this twin machine. My Compiz settings
(only showing items that are checked):

General:
- Commands
- Compsite
- Gnome Compatibility
- OpenGL
Desktop:
- Desktop Cube
- Rotate Cube
Effects:
- Cube Reflection and Deformation (I have the added plugins for this)
- Wobbly Windows
- Window Decoration
Image Loading:
- jpeg
- svg
Utility:
- D-bus
- Mouse position polling
- Session Management
- Regex Matching
Window Management:
- Place Windows
- Windows Rules
- Move Window
- Resize Window

Hope that helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-08-30 Thread NoOp
Added note to comment #103: Unity is now working with that NV25GL
[Quadro4 900 XGL] and 96.43.20-0ubuntu1~natty1.  It's a little wonkey as
the left panel sidebar doesn't hide when a window should cause the
sidebar to hide. But it is working.

Thought that perhaps it is due to my install of unity-2d, so I purged
unity-2d* and restarted the system (soft-boot). Now having issues with
gdm (virtualbox 'Shared Memory Available' halt) so having to use login
in Recovery mode startx to start. Purged virtualbox rebooted. gdm
works again. Can start from the gdm screen, choose 'Unity' and 'Ubuntu
Classic' starts. Compiz settings are screwed up, so I reset them to
those of #103 (Desktop Cube, Rotate Cube, etc., has been unset. Window-
decorator is crashing. Very odd. The odd part is that I was able to get
Unity (standard not 2D working) via Recovery mode, so this indicates
that the issue _may_ be with Unity/Compiz setup configs. I'll have to
try to troubleshoot more tomorrow; in the interim, perhaps Alberto can
have a look give me some logs/tests that I can do tomorrow?

Scratch the last... I think it was unity-2d that was starting somehow.
Back to standard 'Ubuntu Classic' - compiz settings are reset all 3D

Understand. Thanks. I would however like to install on Maverick so that

the holdup on my upgrades). I'll try the driver directly from nVidia.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users

2010-12-02 Thread NoOp
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 546578 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546578

@David Tombs: This issue is nvidia specific to lucid. Using:
$ apt-cache policy nvidia-96
nvidia-96:
  Installed: 96.43.18-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 96.43.18-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 96.43.18-0ubuntu1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 96.43.17-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/restricted Packages
resolves the issue for me as noted in comment #13. Upgrading to
96.43.19-0ubuntu1 also works.

I have not modified my xorg-server (which is the package is 546578 is
filed), I have *only* changed my nvidia-96 driver to resolve the issue:

$ apt-cache policy xorg
xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.4
  Candidate: 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.4
  Version table:
 *** 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

So what specifically is your reasoning for marking this bug as a
duplicate of 546578?

2010-11-24 Thread NoOp
 @NoOp
 That's because you removed nvidia-common (which is what Jockey uses to do
 hardware detection with nvidia).

 In other words I think things are ok. A one-line change in Jockey didn't
 cause that.

Ah. Got it. That makes sense. Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-11-23 Thread NoOp
Works w/32-bit - partially:

VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV25GL [Quadro4 900 XGL] (rev a3)
2.6.35.23-generic

$ apt-cache policy jockey-common

Testing procedure:
1. Uninstalled Derik's repository installs (purged nvidia* (sudo apt-get
purge nvidia*) and jockey-common jockey-gtk) and reinstalled jockey-common
jockey-gtk 0.5.10-0ubuntu5.2 proposed.
2. Rebooted w/o nvidia in low graphics mode - perhaps because I purged nvidia*?
3. System|Administration|Additional Drivers - jocky does not find the nvidia-96
drivers.
4. Reinstall nvidia-96 manually: sudo apt-get install nvidia-96... reboot.
System|Administration|Additional Drivers shows nvidia-96 proprietary driver is
activated  currently in use.
5. System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects|Extra - works (basic wobbly
windows etc). System|Administration|NVIDIA X Server Settings works.
6. Install compiz-settings-manager. System|Preferences|CompizConfig Settings
Manager - cube rotate cube works.

The only part that bothers me is the initial failure of jockey to
recognize offer to install the nvidia-96 driver. While this may
possibly be related to my purging nvidia*, jockey should (IMO) still
detect the card following the clean reboot. So, until someone can
explain why it does not: nvidia-96 96.43.19-0ubuntu1 works, but jockey
0.5.10-0ubuntu5.2 does not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-11-22 Thread NoOp
@Martin  Alberto: I'm not seeing jockey_0.5.10-0ubuntu5.2 yet:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jockey
Should I wait for jockey to be upgraded in proposed before testing, or go ahead
and use Darik's version? IMO it would be better to test with Alberto's so that
we can verify both (nvidia-96 jockey 5.2) at the same time.

 My computer already got Alberto's nvidia-96 from maverick-proposed, but
 it won't get jockey from maverick-proposed if it is published with a
 regular debchange increment.

 Do this to disable the PPA and get the official jockey release if/when
 it becomes available in maverick-proposed:

   $ sudo apt-add-repository --remove ppa:dajhorn/nvidia-96
   $ sudo apt-get update
   $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall jockey-common jockey-gtk

Aleady did that - thanks :-) I'm just waiting for jockey to build before
I test together. Thanks again Darik for the early PPA build(s).

Shows up in Jockey properly, cannot enable desktop effects

Afterwards I am able to set desktop effects. However none of the compiz

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-11-10 Thread NoOp
Got it working; had to remove the driver via jockey, reinstall compiz,
re-enable the driver via jockey, reboot re-enable 'Visual Effects -
Extra', and reset the compiz settings via the compiz settings manager. I
now get the expected compiz bells whistles (rotating desktops etc.,
etc). Thanks Darik. Perhaps Ubuntu could assign this to you for final
packaging?

 Then to enable effects I just followed the instructions from the

 /etc/X11/xorg.conf and save a backup somewhere. Then just add the two
 lines below to xorg.conf anywhere under the Screen section. Option
 AddARGBGLXVisuals True Option DisableGLXRootClipping True

However, several days following nVidia's fix/update
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-96/+bug/626974/comments/71)
and no action from Ubuntu.

Loading the driver manually will cause it to break with kernel updates.
The driver needs to be fixed in Ubuntu so that those of us with older
nVidia cards can upgrade/install properly.

You do realize that bug #573101 is nvidia-173 related and *not*
nvidia-96? Further, there are no '96 drivers in nvidia-graphics-drivers
and nvidia-96 does not (yet) work in Maverick 10.10. This bug report is
filed in the proper package and is nvidia-96 specific.

 @NoOp bug #573101 is both 96 and 173 related, there is a package with 96

 package's changlog indicate that a patch has been added to cure hangups
 which are the symptoms. I didn't realize though that 96 does not work in
 Maverick as you indicated (by the way this report regards lucid not
 maverick) and I didn't test if 96 from maverick works with lucid. Sorry
 for that.

 Bottom line. Does 96 from maverick work in lucid preventing the hangup?

96 doesn't work in Maverick at all at this time due to incompatibility
issues with X server 1.9, so there is no way to test. See:

1. While logged in as user A, System|Log Out username|Switch User

I'll try with nouveau as well (removing nvidia-96), but I seem to recall
that I'd tried nouveau previously and all worked... I'll test again.
Thanks again for testing Pat.

 Currently running the Nouveau driver. This time there is no high CPU
 use. I did not have to kill Xorg but I did sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart
 to get my screen back. So it is some issue with the logout transition. I
 can help test more tomorrow if needed. I will check back here after
 work.

This may be due to an existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. For me if I
removed nvidia-96 and rebooted, I only got a black screen. I had to ssh
into the machine and mv it and then restart gdm. The nouveau driver
wouldn't kick in until I did. My xorg.conf was as mentioned in comment #2.

Try the noveau driver with no xorg.conf (after purging nvidia*) see if
you still get the same problem.

Thanks very much for the confirmation PatG. So we can possibly rule out
GDM being the cause 96 as the issue. I just reproduced on a gnome

can't seem to kill Xorg (even using 'sudo su'). Starting stopping gdm
makes no difference either. Tried from the main user account the test

@Stefan: given that you are running an nvidia card, your issue may be related
to mine. I've filed a separate bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-96/+bug/585685
Have a look at that see if perhaps it may be caused by your nvidia-173
driver. If so then it's something common between the -96 and -173 drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585685] [NEW] Logout after switch user causes black screen and disables keyboard and mouse

2010-05-25 Thread NoOp
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. While logged in as user A, System|Log Out username|Switch User
2. Login to user B, ensure all is working properly and logout from user B.
- screen goes black
- keyboard no longer works
- mouse no longer works

100% reproduceable.

However, I can:
1. ssh -X into the machine w/o issue. I can bring up gui's from the affected
machine (i.e., gnome-system-log, vino-preferences, etc).
2. remote login to the machine via VNC and get a screen; however I then get
multiple tserver instances have to kill it. Remote login to the machine using
NX w/o issue.
3. reboot the machine from the remote ssh.

Attempts to resolve:

1. Ensured that the problem exists with enhanced graphics turned off
(System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects|None)
2. Ensured that the problem wasn't related to gnome-screensaver as per similar
reports (purged gnome-screensaver, installed gnome-screensaver 2.30.0-0ubuntu2
etc).

Workaround:
Remove nvidia-96 and reboot. All switching between users then works properly.
Reinstall nvidia-96 and the problem occurs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-05-24 Thread NoOp
I am exeriencing the same issue - with the exception that both the
keyboard and mouse go dead as well. If there is another bug report the
more closely matches my symptions, please advise.

3. reboot the machine from the remote ssh.

Attempted to use 'apport-collect 546578' to supply additional info, but
response was that I wasn't a subscriber to this bug (I am) and the
report was a duplicate (it isn't). So I'll manually add the bits that
may be relevant:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516520] Re: login fails with nvidia driver 96

2010-04-17 Thread NoOp
Replicated again when upgrading a another 9.10 system to 10.04
w/nvidia-96. Purposely had not set that machine to autologin the same
issue occured. Workaround is basically the same as before by adding a
custom.conf file to /etc/gdm to enable autologin:

1. When gdm is looping see if you can get into a console (wait for it to
settle after attempting to enter your password the first time (black
screen, gdm background, then frozen gdm login display again): Ctrl-
Alt-F1

2. Once into the console, login with your username and password. Then cd
to the /etc/gdm folder:

$ cd /etc/gdm

3. Now create a custom.conf file if you do not alread have one using
nano:

$ sudo nano custom.conf

Enter the following (substituting your regular username in the place of
username:

[daemon]
AutomaticLogin=username
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
DefaultSession=gnome
TimedLoginEnable=false
TimedLogin=username
TimedLoginDelay=30

Now use Ctrl-o save the file (leave it's name as custom.conf) and then
Ctrl-x to exit from nano.

Note: you can do the same by using 'sudo nano /etc/gdm/custom.conf' but
it may be more convenient to cd into the /etc/gdm folder first so that
you can use 'ls' and 'cat custom.conf' etc., later if you wish without
having to add the path in the commands.

Added Note: if you by chance already have a custom.conf on the system
already just change

AutomaticLoginEnable=false

to

AutomaticLoginEnable=true

4. Now, back at the console prompt ($):

$ sudo stop gdm
$ sudo start gdm

That _should _ get you into the desktop. Leave autologin enabled until
the bug is fixed.

FYI: I was simply thanking Martin for all the time effort spent
working on this bug. So I've no idea what you are going on about.

If you read the *original* description of this bug report the *symptoms*
are the same. Electhor marked it as invalid 2010-03-05, Saša reopened
2010-03-21. 553200 wasn't opened until April 1st, and while there was
some speculation that the video driver may have created the problem,
(comment #67) it wasn't until Chris Thomson pointed out that disabling
the nvidia driver correct his problem that I tried the same with the
same results. comment #88 later pointed to 55320. Unsubscribing now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver

2009-07-12 Thread NoOp
When you use metacity composting you are not enabling any 'Extra'/additional
visual effects. As others have already reported, this is the issue. Simply
turning off additional visual effects isn't an answer or solution, it's a poor
workaround. Vino seems to think that they have resolved the issue:

This bug has also been fixed for 2.26.2:
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/vino/commit/?h=gnome-2-26id=f5260a2ad0ad9f3b1c673f6a52a938abd2a58dbb

For jaunty:
$ apt-cache policy vino
vino:
  Installed: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.26.1-0ubuntu1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Has anyone tried vino 2.26.2 to see if that works?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 325881] Re: [jaunty] Numlock always on inside X, cannot be disabled, big issue for laptop users

2009-05-26 Thread NoOp
Sorry for the noise. Looks like this might be the NX server issue that
I'd reported in this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/92482
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/92482/comments/40

I had upgraded all of my NX software yesterday tested by logging into
the A21m - so I think it's the NX causing the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 92482] Re: NumLock gets enabled unexpectedly on my laptop

2009-05-26 Thread NoOp
Same problem today on Jaunty (2.6.28-12-generic) as I reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/92482/comments/40
I had upgraded all of my NX software yesterday tested by logging into the
A21m and the issue is back. The NX acts as a remote keyboard.

On interesting result is that if I am in terminal and I Shift-NumLk I
get no numbers at all, but I see the cursor move down and one space to
the right each time that I press the 'h' key (number 3). If I keep
pressing the key I can get the cursor to move all the way off the
screen. If I press the 'k' key (number 2), the cursor moves directly
down (vertical) one space. So toggling the Shift-NumLk is somehow
setting to keyboard mouse control.
