There are other advanced methods, e.g. combining temporal information with spatial information, that you find in the nvidia proprietary implementation for example. To bump that issue a bit. We are running self made packages by wsnipex (https://launchpad.net/~wsnipex) since more than 6 months now. Trusty would bring everything (kernel, mesa, etc.) to be in really good shape for OSS radeon with vdpau. If you need some background information or even want to see it in action, have look here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=174854 It would be really nice to have that relevant package included in trusty by default.
