[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2062082] [NEW] 24.04 Wayland vs Nautilus performance problem
Public bug reported: Apologies if I have misfiled this bug - this is a report of an issue affecting Wayland in Ubuntu 24.04 beta. Using 24.04 beta logging in with Wayland. Nautilus has very significant performance issues. Doesn't happen when logging in with Xorg instead of Wayland. Opening Nautilus windows - including normal windows navigation, and the file download location dialogue in things like Chrome - extremely slow. Takes approx. 10 seconds to process user double clicking to open folder. Attempting to drag folder across screen usually doesn't work, or takes a very long time. Not very skilled at debugging, but programmes like Gimp, which has its own built-in folder explorer for choosing a location to save an image, do not have this problem. Ubuntu 24.04 with X does not have this problem. No performance issues have been noticed with folder navigation, stat'ing files etc. over the command line. It is only nautilus and Wayland that give me this issue, so I suspect it is not an issue with my SSD. The following output was observed when starting nautilus over the command line: /home/me/ $ nautilus . ** Message: 23:43:50.560: Connecting to org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files libEGL warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen After approx. 10 seconds, the folder opened on screen. I double clicked on a sub directory, and it took about 9 seconds to open. I have attempted to show that this is not an issue with my SSD here: /home/me/ $ date; cd workspace/; touch foo.txt; ls foo*; cd ../; date; Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024 foo.txt Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024 As you can see, no unusual slowdown was observed. Obtaining the following setting for my bug report, I note that the 'Settings' GUI utility is among the areas affect by my very significant system slowdown. I have copied some details about my system including its graphics card in case that helps. # System Details Report --- ## Report details - **Date generated:** 2024-04-17 23:59:54 ## Hardware Information: - **Hardware Model:** ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING - **Memory:** 32.0 GiB - **Processor:** AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X × 16 - **Graphics:**zink Vulkan 1.3(NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (NVIDIA_PROPRIETARY)) - **Disk Capacity:** 2.0 TB ## Software Information: - **Firmware Version:**2006 - **OS Name:** Ubuntu Noble Numbat (development branch) - **OS Build:**(null) - **OS Type:** 64-bit - **GNOME Version:** 46 - **Windowing System:**Wayland - **Kernel Version:** Linux 6.8.0-22-generic ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 24.04 Package: xorg 1:7.7+23ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 6.8.0-22.22-generic 6.8.1 Uname: Linux 6.8.0-22-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_modeset nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.capabilities.gpu0: Error: path was not a regular file. .proc.driver.nvidia.capabilities.mig: Error: path was not a regular file. .proc.driver.nvidia.gpus..09.00.0: Error: path was not a regular file. .proc.driver.nvidia.registry: Binary: "" .proc.driver.nvidia.suspend: suspend hibernate resume .proc.driver.nvidia.suspend_depth: default modeset uvm .proc.driver.nvidia.version: NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 545.29.06 Thu Nov 16 01:59:08 UTC 2023 GCC version: ApportVersion: 2.28.0-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 BootLog: Error: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/boot.log' CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CompositorRunning: None CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Wed Apr 17 23:44:47 2024 DistUpgraded: 2024-04-11 13:09:51,904 DEBUG migrateToDeb822Sources() DistroCodename: noble DistroVariant: ubuntu ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, including running git bisection searches GraphicsCard: NVIDIA Corporation GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti] [10de:1c82] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: NVIDIA Corporation GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti] [10de:1c82] InstallationDate: Installed on 2024-04-11 (6 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 23.10.1 "Mantic Minotaur" - Release amd64 (20231016.1) MachineType: ASUS System Product Name ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 PATH=(custom, no user) SHELL=/bin/bash TERM=xterm-256color XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-6.8.0-22-generic root=/dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-ubuntu--lv ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to noble on 2024-04-11 (6 days ago) dmi.bios.date: 03/19/2021 dmi.bios.release: 5.17 dmi.bios.vendor: American Megatrends Inc. dmi.bios.version: 2006 dmi.board.asset.tag: Default string dmi.board.name: ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING dmi.board.vendor: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. dmi.board.version: Rev X.0x

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2020604] Re: After Mesa upgrades, Chrome won't show graphics
OK just a question about pinning since we would prefer to minimize changes to user systems. When we follow the instructions from Steve's message on: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed which sets the pin priority for proposed to 400, the page says to run a simulated apt upgrade to verify that no packages are scheduled for upgrade. However when we try that we see 11 upgrade-able packages. We can get that number to 0 if we set the pin priority to something less than that of /var/lib/dpkg/status, i.e., to something less than 100. But is that correct? If we comment out all the pin restrictions we see 44 proposed packages scheduled for upgrade. Is that because some of the proposed packages aren't controlled by /var/lib/dpkg/status? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2020604 Title: After Mesa upgrades, Chrome won't show graphics To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/+bug/2020604/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1976563] [NEW] All text and images in Gnome Shell are corrupted
Public bug reported: See attached screenshot. The corrupted text and images are only appearing in the Ubuntu desktop environment (like the login screen, dock, and the bar at top of the screen). Applications like Nautilus, the Terminal app, and Chrome are not affected. Maybe an Nvidia issue? I'm going to restart my PC which will probably fix the issue. ** Description changed: I often have to forcibly power down my PC because of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1970808. Well, the most recent time I did that, when the computer restarted, the resolution is stuck on 1024x768 even though I am on a 1920x1080 monitor. I restarted my PC again and it is still stuck on the low resolution. This Ask Ubuntu answer (https://askubuntu.com/a/1167437/1589552) did allow me to force my resolution to 1920x1080, but a few things still seemed off: - The display settings page in the Gnome settings app still showed my display as "unknown display" and did not have any options for changing the resolution. - A WebGL-based application I use for work was very slow compared to normal. I reverted the change to my Grub config and now I'm back to 1024x768. I have an Nvidia GTX 1060 connected to a 1920x1080 monitor via HDMI. Let me know of any other information I can provide that would be helpful. Also let me know if there is a workaround other than reinstalling the OS. + Edit: I have a Windows dual boot on this PC, with Windows installed on a + separate SSD. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1781754] [NEW] Ubuntu BIONIC needs libinput10 1.11.1-1 to get decent synaptics support
Public bug reported: I have had quite some issues with the touchpad on my 2013 DELL XPS 13 since installing 18.04. It worked fine on previous versions. Typical observations: - lag - cursor movements being interrupted - more lag - single/double tap not being detected consistently - did I mention lag? Long story short: I understand 18.04 moves support for this touchpad from the synaptics driver to libinput. libinput10 1.10 apparently does not work well for this hardware, and adding the xserver-xorg-input- synaptics package did not bring back the good experience entirely. After looking into https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104990 I decided to install the libinput .deb from Cosmic (current 1.11.1-1) which required libinput-bin as well. After installing both, the touchpad works as expected. Bionic is LTS, and these XPS machines have been a commercial reference for Ubuntu. I'd suggest to backport this solution to Bionic. I'm not sure HWE will bring it but even then impact for new installations could already be big. ** Affects: libinput (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libinput in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1781754 Title: Ubuntu BIONIC needs libinput10 1.11.1-1 to get decent synaptics support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libinput/+bug/1781754/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371853] Re: Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour
Hi Christopher. The BIOS I have is already an F8 version variant and I would like to keep the variant. Further, I have not had this problem in the 6 years of owning the hardware until 14.04. So further to Darren's comment it seems very likely that this is a recent software issue. I noticed the problem as soon as I upgraded to 14.04, definitely before 19th September, but I did not upgrade on launch date. I should add that although the problem commonly happens every 10 minute or so, there is sometimes a period of hours without problems and sometimes it happens on every click. I also have an Xbox 360 wireless connector. I will try removing it to see if that is causing some sort of conflict. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1371853 Title: Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1371853/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371853] [NEW] Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour
Public bug reported: This problem began with the 14.04 upgrade. The mouse has always worked normally until then. Approximately every 10 minutes - and possibly triggered by Alt-Tab window switches/opening new windows - the mouse behaviour becomes rather strange. Primarly, left-clicks are not registered properly to the topmost window. They usually appear to go through to the window below and it's not possible to switch focus to a new window (or any other window). Mouse movement is unaffected and clicking on the original window (which has grabbed the focus) seems to work. The Unity bar pops out but is not clickable and rapidly re-hides. Sometimes individual window elements are not usable even if the main window itself is. Examples: * In Thunderbird, left-pane account/folder selection works, but does not perform the corresponding update to the message list/preview panes when the folder selection changes. * dialogues are popped up where parts of the dialogue respond to clicks but other parts do not. Commonly, the dialogue title/menu bar is not responsive (it cannot be moved/closed). Sometimes right-clicking will restore focus to the appropriate window/area. Sometimes not. Unloading and reloading usbhid and hid_logitech modules does not help. Restarting will fix the problem temporarily. I've found that switching to a console and back will fix the problem temporarily too (Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F7). Several very similar bugs exist for wireless headsets, mice and quite often Logitech (although of course this is just a common brand) from before 14.04, but for me this was never a problem previously. They are being closed as expired even though they still exist in 14.04. Bug #993655, Bug #1006156 and Bug #1337586 are examples. It is not 100% clear to me if this is an xorg bug, but this is what was being suggested in those tickets. The combination of module reloading not working with console switching working (reinstall handlers?) does suggest X is involved. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1176232] [NEW] Race Condition: Moving A Window Between Virtual Desktops and Switching Virtual Desktops
Public bug reported: To replicate: 1. Enable multiple desktops. I assume that you will also have the keyboard shortcuts enabled. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+ Arrow Key will move a window to a desktop in that direction; Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Key will move your current display to a desktop in that direction. 2. Make a full screen window. 3. Move that window to a different desktop (ie, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Right). 4. Before the window has finished moving to the new desktop, move your view back to the old desktop (ie, Ctrl+Alt+Left) If you timed it correctly, the window will be frozen between the two desktops. The problem persists even if you move the window between desktops. You can fix it by sending it to one side (Ie, Ctrl+Windows+Left). I am running an updated Raring build on a cheap Asus Eee PC. I have a computer science background if you have any questions that would help debugging the issue. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399727] Re: Display preferences don't reverse from bad mode forcing xorg.conf edit
** Description changed: Installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a friends Amilo L7320GW. LCD not recognised, so I ended up with just the top left 1280x800 of a 1600x1200 virtual screen. It thought it was displaying the full 1600x1200. However, when I tried to set 1280x800 resolution it still seemed to still think it was displaying on a 1600x1200 screen and the display was very corrupted. (i.e. the horizontals were out of sync, strange wrapping, etc, like the worst interlacing feathering ever! - and even stranger, the mouse pointer was unaffected and completely out of sync with all of the 'interlace feathered' dialogue boxes I could just about make out) The Display dialogue then KEEPS this bad setting by default! It should REJECT it if not confirmed within the time limit, that's the whole point of confirming right? - How do I reject the mode if I can't see or aim at the damn dialogue box! + How do I reject the mode if I can't see or aim at the dialogue box? So, I was FORCED to edit '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' to revert this - a scary enough proposition to me, let alone my friend. I eventually discovered that in Section Screen I needed my SubSection Displays to have both 'Virtual' and 'Viewport' set to '1280 800'. My initial xorg.conf was basically empty, so I guess setting a resolution was leaving the virtual resolution at the 1600x1200 size dictated by the lack of a useful monitor probe. (assumes monitor must cope with the highest resolution card is capable of, it would seem) Maybe assuming Virtual/Viewport should match when monitor is 'unknown' would be safe way to do things, in the absence of a full blown 'tell me what resolution the monitor is' dialogue? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/399727 Title: Display preferences don't reverse from bad mode forcing xorg.conf edit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/399727/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41994] Re: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off
Ah, sorry, done a little more testing. It stays off indefinitely (without input) if the lid is open. But, if I run it after closing the lid, it still wakes randomly. This means that it must be receiving some imaginary input when the lid is closed to wake it. My biggest problem is that some imaginary input wakes the laptop. Ignoring all input while the lid is closed would solve the problem. However, without a mouse connected I can't provide any input with the lid closed anyway, so this doesn't bother me as much as not waking on imaginary inputs. I remember trying to debug this before, and the input is non-existent. The screen wakes because the X server is no longer idle, but using xev reports no input being received. It is interesting that this only happens when the lid is closed. Perhaps this bug should be split into two parts. Firstly, a bug, that imaginary input is received randomly when the lid is closed. Secondly, a wishlist, that the screen should not wake on input while the lid is closed. Fixing either of these would satisfy me. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to x11-xserver-utils in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/41994 Title: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/41994/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Yes, that will work, however we'll need to be careful about not leaking in the decorator in that case. That will probably involve compiz creating a session window as well for the decorator, which isn't a difficult task -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927168 Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in memmove() from drisw_update_tex_buffer() from dri_set_tex_buffer2() from drisw_bind_tex_image() from __glXBindTexImageEXT() from TfpTexture::enable() from enableFragmentOperationsAndDrawGeometry() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/927168/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
