[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2062082] [NEW] 24.04 Wayland vs Nautilus performance problem

2024-04-17 Thread Sam Bee
Public bug reported:

Apologies if I have misfiled this bug - this is a report of an issue
affecting Wayland in Ubuntu 24.04 beta.

Using 24.04 beta logging in with Wayland. Nautilus has very significant
performance issues. Doesn't happen when logging in with Xorg instead of
Wayland.

Opening Nautilus windows - including normal windows navigation, and the
file download location dialogue in things like Chrome - extremely slow.
Takes approx. 10 seconds to process user double clicking to open folder.
Attempting to drag folder across screen usually doesn't work, or takes a
very long time.

Not very skilled at debugging, but programmes like Gimp, which has its
own built-in folder explorer for choosing a location to save an image,
do not have this problem. Ubuntu 24.04 with X does not have this
problem. No performance issues have been noticed with folder navigation,
stat'ing files etc. over the command line. It is only nautilus and
Wayland that give me this issue, so I suspect it is not an issue with my
SSD.

The following output was observed when starting nautilus over the
command line:

/home/me/ $ nautilus .
** Message: 23:43:50.560: Connecting to org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files
libEGL warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen

After approx. 10 seconds, the folder opened on screen. I double clicked on a
sub directory, and it took about 9 seconds to open.

I have attempted to show that this is not an issue with my SSD here:

/home/me/ $ date; cd workspace/; touch foo.txt; ls foo*; cd ../; date;
Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024
foo.txt
Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024

As you can see, no unusual slowdown was observed.

Obtaining the following setting for my bug report, I note that the
'Settings' GUI utility is among the areas affect by my very significant
system slowdown. I have copied some details about my system including
its graphics card in case that helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2020604] Re: After Mesa upgrades, Chrome won't show graphics

2023-06-08 Thread Sam
Following Timo's instructions, aptitude upgraded those two packages
(along with three additional packages aptitude auto-selected) on one
test system:

[UPGRADE] libegl-mesa0:amd64 22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.2 ->
22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.3
[UPGRADE] libgbm1:amd64 22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.2 -> 22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.3
[UPGRADE] libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.2 ->
22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.3
[UPGRADE] libglapi-mesa:amd64 22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.2 ->
22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.3
[UPGRADE] libglx-mesa0:amd64 22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.2 ->
22.2.5-0ubuntu0.1~22.04.3

Rebooted and tested Chrome. No immediate issues, graphics work. Will
keep testing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2019869] Re: nvidia-dkms-390: better support for kernel 6.2

2023-06-06 Thread Sam Colegrove
I can install nvidia-390 and it works on my Kubuntu 23.10 laptop
monitor, however the external monitor is not detected and does not work.
If I remove Nvidia 390 as well a bumblebee-NVIDIA, the external monitor
works without a problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2020604] Re: After Mesa upgrades, Chrome won't show graphics

2023-06-05 Thread Sam
OK just a question about pinning since we would prefer to minimize
changes to user systems. When we follow the instructions from Steve's
message on:

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

which sets the pin priority for proposed to 400, the page says to run a
simulated apt upgrade to verify that no packages are scheduled for
upgrade. However when we try that we see 11 upgrade-able packages.

We can get that number to 0 if we set the pin priority to something less
than that of /var/lib/dpkg/status, i.e., to something less than 100.
But is that correct?

If we comment out all the pin restrictions we see 44 proposed packages
scheduled for upgrade. Is that because some of the proposed packages
aren't controlled by /var/lib/dpkg/status?

Yes, the mouse cursor does get frozen.

The bug occurred and I was able to ssh into the computer. I've attached
the results of `ps auxw` as you requested.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1976563] [NEW] All text and images in Gnome Shell are corrupted

2022-06-01 Thread Sam Magura
Public bug reported:

See attached screenshot.

The corrupted text and images are only appearing in the Ubuntu desktop
environment (like the login screen, dock, and the bar at top of the
screen). Applications like Nautilus, the Terminal app, and Chrome are
not affected.

Maybe an Nvidia issue?

I'm going to restart my PC which will probably fix the issue. I'll edit
this if the issue persists after the restart.

Edit: To anyone investigating this issue, I recommend looking at some of
the other issues I've reported recently. It seems like they could all be
connected somehow, with Nvidia as the common thread.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1975650] Re: Display stuck in low resolution

2022-05-24 Thread Sam Magura
** Description changed:

I often have to forcibly power down my PC because of this bug:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1970808. Well, the
most recent time I did that, when the computer restarted, the resolution
is stuck on 1024x768 even though I am on a 1920x1080 monitor. I
restarted my PC again and it is still stuck on the low resolution.

This Ask Ubuntu answer (https://askubuntu.com/a/1167437/1589552) did
allow me to force my resolution to 1920x1080, but a few things still
  seemed off:

  - The display settings page in the Gnome settings app still showed my display
as "unknown display" and did not have any options for changing the resolution.
  - A WebGL-based application I use for work was very slow compared to normal.

I reverted the change to my Grub config and now I'm back to 1024x768.

I have an Nvidia GTX 1060 connected to a 1920x1080 monitor via HDMI. Let
me know of any other information I can provide that would be helpful.
Also let me know if there is a workaround other than reinstalling the
  OS.

+ Edit: I have a Windows dual boot on this PC, with Windows installed on a
+ separate SSD. I booted into Windows and everything seems completely
+ fine. This provides further evidence that this is a software issue, not
+ a hardware one.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1975650] [NEW] Display stuck in low resolution

2022-05-24 Thread Sam Magura
Public bug reported:

Also let me know if there is a workaround other than reinstalling the
OS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2021-11-12 Thread Sam Osborn
The permanent fix described by
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/1568604/comments/261 works for me.

sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel*
sudo reboot

Note the poster of this fix has a follow up comment about the broader video
driver removal also causing issues with Chrome, but I use Firefox so I havent
seen any other issues removing just the intel driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1896627] Re: Windows flicker when being resized with the mouse (Xorg sessions)

2021-02-26 Thread Sam Lane
After updating Ubuntu Budgie 20.10 today (5.8.0-44-generic #50-Ubuntu) I
notice this doesn't happen for me anymore. It is possible that it just
hasn't happened yet, but prior to today, I could reliably reproduce this
every time by resizing a window for a few seconds until flickering
started. I can't make this happen anymore, so fingers crossed...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1876991] Re: Touchpad started appearing both as a touchpad and as a mouse input devices after upgrade to 20.04

2020-10-04 Thread Sam Hudson
I am also having a very similar problem on my Dell Inspiron 5390 runnin
ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. The output from running xinput reads:

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointerid=4[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ DELL091F:00 27C6:01F0 Mouse id=10 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ DELL091F:00 27C6:01F0 Touchpadid=11 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Video Bus id=6[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=7[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Sleep Button id=8[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Integrated_Webcam_HD: Integrate id=9[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Intel HID events id=12 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Intel HID 5 button array id=13 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Dell WMI hotkeys id=14 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=15 [slave keyboard (3)]

After booting the laptop up I have no problems with the touchpad, I also
noticed that after a cold boot if i run "xinput test 11" and "xinput
test 10" only device 11 (touchpad) registers any inputs. However, once i
suspend the laptop and then wake it the touchpad loses lots of functions
(basically functions like a mouse no gestures work) and right click also
becomes middle click. If i again run both of the xinput tests again the
only device that registers inputs is now device ID 10 (the one labelled
mouse)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2020-09-06 Thread Sam Shiell
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 160264 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160264

I have this exact bugg on Kubuntu 20.4 LTS.

It's not the same as #160264 as (like other people here) I get a black
screen, not a white one.

No response from any Fn+Fx keys, only fix is a hard boot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1497806] Re: Mirrored display broken in Xubuntu

2019-04-21 Thread Sam Fite
I am using xfce 4.12 on Ubuntu 18.04 and am having a similar issue.
However, on startup, my laptop screen is mirrored on the intended
external monitor just before I reach lightdm. xrandr detects the monitor
however running 'xrandr --output <> --same-as <>' results in no effect
with no error messages or anything. When viewed through xfce4-settings-
manager, the external monitor shows up but is grayed out and is labeled
'(disabled);

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1781754] [NEW] Ubuntu BIONIC needs libinput10 1.11.1-1 to get decent synaptics support

2018-07-14 Thread Sam Van den Eynde
Public bug reported:

I have had quite some issues with the touchpad on my 2013 DELL XPS 13
since installing 18.04. It worked fine on previous versions.

Typical observations:
 - lag
 - cursor movements being interrupted
 - more lag
 - single/double tap not being detected consistently
 - did I mention lag?

Long story short: I understand 18.04 moves support for this touchpad
from the synaptics driver to libinput. libinput10 1.10 apparently does
not work well for this hardware, and adding the xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics package did not bring back the good experience entirely.

After looking into https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104990 I
decided to install the libinput .deb from Cosmic (current 1.11.1-1)
which required libinput-bin as well. After installing both, the touchpad
works as expected.

Bionic is LTS, and these XPS machines have been a commercial reference
for Ubuntu. I'd suggest to backport this solution to Bionic. I'm not
sure HWE will bring it but even then impact for new installations could
already be big.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1511301] Please test proposed package

Greetings!  Thank you for the prompt reply and request to run some code for
testing.  I am a total beginner and am trying to get away from Windows, so I
really don´t know what to do in Ubuntu.  Is there  a way to access a
blow-by-blow instruction as to what and how I should do?

Thanks for the prompt reply, Jamie!!  I have been a Windows user since version
1 they reply you sent me might as well be in Urdu, unfortunately.  Besides I am
a total beginner here.  Is there something in the contents that I should do, or
will the Canonical people eventually write some code in order to overcome this

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1656620] Re: Discoloration in some XFCE icons and window borders

2017-02-02 Thread Sam Rosewood
Does somebody know will this bug affect to Ubuntu 16.0.2 that will be released
in a week
(http://news.softpedia.com/news/ubuntu-16-04-2-lts-delayed-until-february-9-due-to-serious-boot-regression-512445.shtml)?
Or they have a time to fix it?
As I know, it will include new mesa etc.
I checked Lubuntu 17.04, this bug affects it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1590359] [NEW] intel_pipe_config causes UI lockup

2016-06-08 Thread Sam Martin
Public bug reported:

Unsure what causes this, but noticed a couple of issues recently that
cause temporary or persistent GUI lockups. I can usually get to a
different TTY to look at whats going on and find log entries like below
in the syslog. They often seem to occur in batches. So far most times
the UI will return to a functional state eventually (sometimes moments,
other times minutes).

Let me know if/what else is needed to diagnose etc.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371853] Re: Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour

2014-11-15 Thread Sam Brightman
There were a couple of kernel updates after the previous comment on
14.04 and then I didn't see the issue for several weeks, including
initially after 14.10 upgade. Today I can frequently only get one left
click before it stops working.

This is the first reboot since installing 3.16.0-25.33 and did not see
the behaviour on 3.16.0-24.32 before that. I don't see any xorg/unity
changes in the same time. I tried to find suspicious differences:

2014-11-15 Thread Sam Brightman
Christopher, I've already replied to that comment. The BIOS version is
clearly not the issue. Further, the bug is confirmed by another user.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371853] Re: Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour

2014-09-24 Thread Sam Brightman
Darren reports experiencing the *same* issue and correlates a possible
cause which matches the setup of the original reporting. I think it's
rather premature to dismiss that as a separate bug. Bugs are anyway not
scoped to individual people). I will report back if the problem occurs
again with the additional hardware unplugged.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371853] Re: Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour

2014-09-23 Thread Sam Brightman
Hi Christopher. The BIOS I have is already an F8 version variant and I
would like to keep the variant. Further, I have not had this problem in
the 6 years of owning the hardware until 14.04. So further to Darren's
comment it seems very likely that this is a recent software issue. I
noticed the problem as soon as I upgraded to 14.04, definitely before
19th September, but I did not upgrade on launch date.

I should add that although the problem commonly happens every 10 minute
or so, there is sometimes a period of hours without problems and
sometimes it happens on every click.

I also have an Xbox 360 wireless connector. I will try removing it to
see if that is causing some sort of conflict.

I have a very similar-sounding issue with Logitech wireless mouse (no
headset). Periodically loses click handlers or something with very
closely related symptoms. Try switching to console and back (Ctrl-
Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F7).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1371853] [NEW] Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour

2014-09-19 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

This problem began with the 14.04 upgrade. The mouse has always worked
normally until then.

Approximately every 10 minutes - and possibly triggered by Alt-Tab
window switches/opening new windows - the mouse behaviour becomes rather
strange. Primarly, left-clicks are not registered properly to the
topmost window. They usually appear to go through to the window below
and it's not possible to switch focus to a new window (or any other
window). Mouse movement is unaffected and clicking on the original
window (which has grabbed the focus) seems to work. The Unity bar pops
out but is not clickable and rapidly re-hides. Sometimes individual
window elements are not usable even if the main window itself is.
Examples:

* In Thunderbird, left-pane account/folder selection works, but does not
perform the corresponding update to the message list/preview panes when the
folder selection changes.
* dialogues are popped up where parts of the dialogue respond to clicks but
other parts do not. Commonly, the dialogue title/menu bar is not responsive (it
cannot be moved/closed).

Sometimes right-clicking will restore focus to the appropriate
window/area. Sometimes not.

Unloading and reloading usbhid and hid_logitech modules does not help.

Restarting will fix the problem temporarily. I've found that switching
to a console and back will fix the problem temporarily too (Ctrl-Alt-F1,
Ctrl-Alt-F7).

Several very similar bugs exist for wireless headsets, mice and quite
often Logitech (although of course this is just a common brand) from
before 14.04, but for me this was never a problem previously. They are
being closed as expired even though they still exist in 14.04. Bug
#993655, Bug #1006156 and Bug #1337586 are examples. It is not 100%
clear to me if this is an xorg bug, but this is what was being suggested
in those tickets. The combination of module reloading not working with
console switching working (reinstall handlers?) does suggest X is
involved.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1359960] [NEW] i386 apps use wrong libGL

2014-08-21 Thread Sam Segers
Public bug reported:

I'm having issues with the propertary ATI drivers and i386 apps. FI
steam and the ubuntu-emulator. I get no HWA.

It seems to be a problem with the existance of both
/usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 and /usr/lib/i386-linux-
gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0 the first is from fglrx-updates and the second
is from libgl1-mesa-glx:i386

If I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib32/fglrx the issue is gone

/etc/ld.so.conf.d contain the following files:

fakeroot-x86_64-linux-gnu.conf x86_64-linux-gnu_EGL.conf
i386-linux-gnu.conf x86_64-linux-gnu_GL.conf
i386-linux-gnu_GL.conf x86_64-linux-gnu_mirclientplatform.conf
i686-linux-gnu.conf x86_64-linux-gnu_mirplatformgraphics.conf
libc.conf zz_i386-biarch-compat.conf
x86_64-linux-gnu.conf zz_x32-biarch-compat.conf

with x86_64-linux-gnu_GL.conf containing the link to the propretairy
driver libGL but i386-linux-gnu_GL.conf contains the libgl that is used
before the ATI one.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1333597] Re: I don't know what is going on

2014-06-26 Thread Sam
Had you read my accompanying comments on the bug about me only having
used Ubuntu for 2[TWO] weeks, and that I am NEW to this OPERATING
SYSTEM, you wouldn't have sent me the reply that you did.

Never mind, I will return to WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM, even though it is
buggy, but at least they do not send replies like yours.

Nicolas Sampson.

Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1176232] [NEW] Race Condition: Moving A Window Between Virtual Desktops and Switching Virtual Desktops

2013-05-03 Thread Sam King
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1. Enable multiple desktops. I assume that you will also have the keyboard
shortcuts enabled. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+ Arrow Key will move a window to a desktop
in that direction; Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Key will move your current display to a
desktop in that direction.
2. Make a full screen window.
3. Move that window to a different desktop (ie, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Right).
4. Before the window has finished moving to the new desktop, move your view
back to the old desktop (ie, Ctrl+Alt+Left)

If you timed it correctly, the window will be frozen between the two
desktops. The problem persists even if you move the window between
desktops. You can fix it by sending it to one side (Ie,
Ctrl+Windows+Left).

I am running an updated Raring build on a cheap Asus Eee PC. I have a
computer science background if you have any questions that would help
debugging the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399727] Re: Display preferences don't reverse from bad mode forcing xorg.conf edit

2013-03-01 Thread sam wytoski
** Description changed:

Installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a friends Amilo L7320GW.
LCD not recognised, so I ended up with just the top left 1280x800 of a
1600x1200 virtual screen.
It thought it was displaying the full 1600x1200.

However, when I tried to set 1280x800 resolution it still seemed to
still think it was displaying on a 1600x1200 screen and the display was
very corrupted. (i.e. the horizontals were out of sync, strange
wrapping, etc, like the worst interlacing feathering ever! - and even
stranger, the mouse pointer was unaffected and completely out of sync
with all of the 'interlace feathered' dialogue boxes I could just about
  make out)

The Display dialogue then KEEPS this bad setting by default!
It should REJECT it if not confirmed within the time limit, that's the whole
point of confirming right?
- How do I reject the mode if I can't see or aim at the damn dialogue box!
+ How do I reject the mode if I can't see or aim at the dialogue box?
So, I was FORCED to edit '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' to revert this - a scary enough
proposition to me, let alone my friend.

I eventually discovered that in Section Screen I needed my SubSection
Displays to have both 'Virtual' and 'Viewport' set to '1280 800'.

My initial xorg.conf was basically empty, so I guess setting a
resolution was leaving the virtual resolution at the 1600x1200 size
dictated by the lack of a useful monitor probe. (assumes monitor must
cope with the highest resolution card is capable of, it would seem)

Maybe assuming Virtual/Viewport should match when monitor is 'unknown'
would be safe way to do things, in the absence of a full blown 'tell me
what resolution the monitor is' dialogue?

Hmm, nope. I've removed UnityMTGrabHandles::glDraw from the description
as we're just painting a regular old tfp texture from xcomposite. This
sounds like some kind of weird problem in the driver.

Can the reporters run nvidia-bug-report.sh ? It should be in your PATH
by default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41994] Re: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off

2012-09-23 Thread Sam Bull
Ah, sorry, done a little more testing. It stays off indefinitely
(without input) if the lid is open. But, if I run it after closing the
lid, it still wakes randomly. This means that it must be receiving some
imaginary input when the lid is closed to wake it.

My biggest problem is that some imaginary input wakes the laptop.
Ignoring all input while the lid is closed would solve the problem.
However, without a mouse connected I can't provide any input with the
lid closed anyway, so this doesn't bother me as much as not waking on
imaginary inputs.

I remember trying to debug this before, and the input is non-existent.
The screen wakes because the X server is no longer idle, but using xev
reports no input being received. It is interesting that this only
happens when the lid is closed.

Perhaps this bug should be split into two parts. Firstly, a bug, that
imaginary input is received randomly when the lid is closed. Secondly, a
wishlist, that the screen should not wake on input while the lid is
closed.

Fixing either of these would satisfy me.

Yes, that will work, however we'll need to be careful about not leaking
in the decorator in that case. That will probably involve compiz
creating a session window as well for the decorator, which isn't a
difficult task
