2023-02-20 Thread Simon Chopin
I'm seeing the exact same error on 450-server, 470-server, 510-server
and 515-server in the glibc autopkgtests

lunar/lunar/amd64/n/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-450-server/20230217_153300_3ba46@/log.gz

There's also other failures on 470, 510 and 515 that might or might not
be related?

followed by

It looks like a failed allocation is not detected, and an illegal unmap
follows.

>From a distant it looks like an application is exhausting the Xserver
memory, en the Xserver is not robust enough to report these problems to
the application program and stay unaffected.

When it is followed by a segmentation error later it sure looks like
memory corruption, due to not detecting the failure return from
glMapBuffer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1970473] Re: [radeon] Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV when using the RADEON driver

2022-07-13 Thread Simon Iremonger
Versions tested against jammy (retrieved via jammy-proposed updates):-
ii xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:19.1.0-2ubuntu1
ii xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:19.1.0-2ubuntu1
Tried these updates alone, tried in combination with other jammy-proposed too.
Tried on previously-crashing radeon system. Tried on intel system.
All ways tested:-
* rotation works
* 3d applications work
* no other errors/issues apparent to me.

I can confirm the same crash happening with 22.04 Xorg and radeon card:-

VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cedar
[Radeon HD 5000/6000/7350/8350 Series]

... when trying to rotate... which always used to work before e.g. in

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1957181] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2022-01-12 Thread Simon
Public bug reported:

When having more than one window open, e.g. Firefox and a terminal and
then to swap between the two. The clicking with the mouse stops working
but it still moves. For instance when I hover over text or not the
cursor does not change. Sometimes I can still click or select text in
the original window but the coordinates of the mouse are not where the
cursor is displayed. Sometimes the keyboard dies too e.g. Alt+F2 does
not work. Killing XOrg (if possible) seems to revert things to a working
state.

2021-09-01 Thread Simon Michalke
I am also affected by this bug. I am running Linuxmint and Cinnamon just
keeps crashing. Most of the times it is the result of clicking a few
things and opening / closing guake at the same time.

Installing the proposed packages does not fix the problem though, I am
still encountering frequent crashes:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1914458] Re: Crash after stylus touch on wacom tablet

2021-03-29 Thread Simon
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1920632 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1920632

This has been marked as a duplicate of bug #1920632 (which it may well
be) - however I am experiencing these crashes on kernel 5.4.0-70-generic
(i.e. the GA kernel for 20.04.2) - is it possible to get the fix from
bug #1920632 backported into that kernel to fix this issue for everyone?
Apologies if I've misunderstood the process.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1855757] Re: [nvidia] Background image corrupted after standby or resume from suspend

2021-03-17 Thread Simon
Ubuntu 20.04 still has this bug with mutter 3.36.7+git20201123-0.20.04.1 amd64
and nvidia-340.
The workaround to set the wallpaper resolution to the screen resolution does
work though! Thanx for that!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1795135] Re: XFCE window buttons are not clickable at the top of the screen

It's "Won't fix" only for the component xorg, because it won't/can't be
fixed in that component.

The fix has already landed in the relevant package (xfce4-panel).

Solved this (and some other issues) for me by installing the mainline kernel
Used the "mainline" script for that
e.g. with instructions from

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1875853] [NEW] Logon screen crashes when Wayland is enabled

2020-04-29 Thread Simon Huwyler
Public bug reported:

When booting, the log on screen shortly appears, but then (after less
than a second) disappears, leaving a black screen with a single
underline cursor.

Uncommenting "WaylandEnable=false" in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf fixes the
problem.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1834784] Re: Xorg freeze

2019-07-01 Thread Simon Preston
Hi.

Everything freezes. The clock on my screen shows the seconds. which has
also frozen. Pressing ctrl-alt-f2 etc, to get to a login prompt doesn't
work. Only a hard reset can clear it.
I have installed the amdgpu pro drivers, supplied by AMD, and will see if
that helps resolve the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

2019-04-24 Thread Simon Ádám
UPDATE:

Solved by disabling bluetooth in bios according to:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1028883/ubuntu-18-04-systemd-udevd-uses-
high-cpu-conflict-with-wifi

It is silent and cool now.

Under the link you can find guys saying that this systemd-udevd 100% cpu
usage is because of the dell bluetooth. Others might have similar issues
with this. There is a probable solution here too if you want to use your
bluetooth too. I didn't try it though.

In summary: blacklisting nouveau, installing nvidia driver and disabling
bluetooth solved the overheat problem for me.

I feel this is a workaround though, and linux shouldn't overheat in any
case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

2019-01-01 Thread Simon Ádám
Ubuntu offered me a security update. It was offering it for a long time
and I didn't want to take it, because I didn't wanted to mess it up. But
installed all, and it messed it up with kernel 4.15: it couldn't install
the 340 nvidia driver I need into the new kernel. It became an endless
loop when ran the new kernel version (4.15). I read somewhere that this
might be because of video driver. I started the last working linux
kernel and activated nouveau. 4.15 kernel started this way, but
overheated in a minute and shutted down.

What I did is: started linux in command line mode and blacklisted nouveau,
downloaded 340 nvidia from nvidia website and installed it manually (without
DKMS, because it didn't work).
Now there is no overheat. Nouveau is the one to blame imo.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1795135] Re: XFCE window buttons are not clickable at the top of the screen

2018-10-24 Thread Simon Steinbeiß
Not sure it's helpful to add all panel-like applications that are
affected by this problem to the bugreport - unless of course you want to
track which applications implemented the same workaround (which seems to
be the only known workaround anyway - if you don't want to intercept
X11's signals manually).

Let me formulate the bug more generally:
All windows with coordinates of 0x0 have issues with xorg believing the cursor
leaves the window because the lower boundaries are not clamped to integers.
Instead the subpixel rendering of xinput2 results in those negative coordinates
I mentioned before. I'm convinced *all* applications have this problem and I've
discussed about the topic with the Gtk+ developers as well. One of the upstream
bugreports even contains a small reproducer that is not a panel at all.

I have written a patch that employs the only known/reasonable workaround
so far for the issue within xorg:
https://git.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/commit/?id=e56e8699e271cea209f5b283421952d9035ad2b5

So obviously this is a known bug and literally every panel-like
application is affected. It also seems there is no good solution so far
apart from the aforementioned workaround of switching away from xinput2
via the environment variable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1760411] Re: I don know

2018-04-02 Thread Simon Quigley
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

2018-03-13 Thread Simon Déziel
Finally found what changed. I updated /etc/fstab to have /proc mounted
with hidepid=2,gid=sudo for added security. This works perfectly on
16.04 but totally breaks on 17.10.

To recap: mounting /proc with "nodev, noexec, nosuid" works but adding
"hidepid=2,gid=sudo" breaks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1753884] Re: session logout after suspend

2018-03-09 Thread Simon
Hey Christopher,

1) When I report the crash files with:

$ ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash

I get a pop saying Ubuntu has experienced an error and asks me to
continue to report it. I'm going to assume that this is part of the
process of reporting it and it's working correctly, and not ubuntu-bug
experiencing a bug while I'm reporting it (it's a bit confusing to me).
But it's not clear to me what the next steps are here (even from that
documentation).

2) The crash created after the crash are:

ls -la /var/crash/
total 50516
drwxrwsrwt 2 root whoopsie 4096 Mar 9 11:12 .
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 Aug 1 2017 ..
-rw-r- 1 root whoopsie 560003 Mar 7 13:16
_lib_systemd_systemd-udevd.0.crash
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root whoopsie0 Mar 9 11:11 .lock
-rw-r- 1 simon whoopsie 1585974 Mar 9 11:12 _opt_atom_atom.1000.crash
-rw-r- 1 simon whoopsie 49568222 Mar 9 11:12
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash

The Mar 9 ones are the ones that appeared after I closed my lid, let the
laptop suspend, and start things up again. I don't think the atom crash
file is always there.

3) I'll try upgrading to 17.10 for now, and then 18.04 when it becomes
the new LTS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1753884] Re: session logout after suspend

2018-03-07 Thread Simon
Christopher, thanks for responding so quickly!

It took me a while to download the newest ISO.

I've been able to narrow it down a bit more as well: the log out only
happens if I have my second monitor plugged in. Sometimes (but not
always) the second monitor will flash the "logged out" screen for a
second or two before going dim. If I unplug the second monitor and close
the lid of my computer I log in and it's still the same session.

I have "Suspend even if external monitor is plugged in" toggled in Tweak
Tools.

1) No, my session is not logged out if I suspend via the GUI with the
lid open.

2) There are! Is it safe to upload that file? I can do so.

3) I'm fairly sure it's happened since I initially installed 16.04

4) With the live USB I don't think I can set up a user account that will
get logged out? When I close the lid of my laptop without the external
monitor plugged in there is no log in screen and I just see the desktop
(even when I toggle that the user is not logged in automatically). With
the external monitor plugged in the desktop just switches. I couldn't
find a toggle for the "Suspend even if external monitor is plugged in"
option. I'm happy to actually try upgrading my machine to 18.04 or
17.10, but that would lose you your test scenario if it ends up working?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1753884] [NEW] session logout after suspend

2018-03-06 Thread Simon
Public bug reported:

This is a new bug report for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/362075

I am running Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS 64-bit + gnome, the standard
installation as downloaded from the Ubuntu website, on a Lenovo ThinkPad
T440s.

When I close the lid of my laptop, my session gets logged out, where I
would expect the lock screen simply to come up.

The workaround suggested in the original bug report (which was for
kubuntu 9.04) suggests to disable the lock screen on resume option, but
I can't find this option on 16.04.

It's also not a super desirable work-around. I want to still have to log
in if I close the lid of my laptop.

you should expect some breakage.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1749472] Re: mesa 18.0.0 will cause rendering errors in Qt applications

2018-02-25 Thread Simon Quigley
That would be the ideal way to do it because the fix is already
installable in the CI Train PPA for the next Qt transition:
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-
service/+archive/ubuntu/3113/+packages

That should be in -proposed before Feature Freeze, if not before then.

Is there a compelling case to get this in *now* and not wait the (maybe)
two days?

block-proposed still belongs for mesa, having it blocked for other
reasons isn't good enough because this bug will break the Kubuntu and
Lubuntu Next desktops.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1668722] Re: 60x11-common_xdg_path uses $DESKTOP_SESSION which needs a sanity check

2018-02-09 Thread Simon Quigley
So it seems that the problem is not that xorg doesn't set
DESKTOP_SESSION correctly, it's that SDDM uses an absolute path for this
instead of just the base name like every other window manager.

I'll fix it in Ubuntu; meanwhile, a bug is filed upstream. Linked here.
