[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-05-12 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
BTW, about the punctuation signs that, in French, requires a nbsp before
them, i.e. ; : ! ? (for perfect typographic correctness, while
usually few people know about this and nobody really cares...) :

Usual word processing programs, such as OpenOffice / LibreOffice, when
configured to the french locale, add these typographically required
nbsps automagically, so people actually do not have to type the nbsp,
which makes the need for an easy entry of these still less of an issue.

Should we follow the slope of stealing a useful right [Ctrl] key for
this, then me might well in the future steal the left one for the dash
- , as in french, we typographically use at least 3 different lenghts
for dashes. As previously, word processing software usually transforms
the normal dash into the typographically correct dash... Nope, all
this mess of quite complex and unusual characters is the very reason for
which meta and compose keys exist in the first place...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-05-11 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
About a short nbsp in french, let's make it perfectly clear that there
must be about a hundred professionnal typographists in the whole country
who care about it - most of them not using Linux BTW - and the rest of
the ~40 million computer users here don't give a shit about a short
nbsp and don't even know what it is, feel perfectly happy with the
correct french they write without it, and many of them just would like
their fscking right [Ctrl] key back.

If a so thin minority of professional typographists that in no way
represent the average french Joe user want this modifier, it's
perfectly OK that they devise their own special layout for their on
needs, but by no means impose it on the rest of us.

Okay, your vote is currently happening on

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1013881

with 4 new entries today (from different people), 100% of them saying :

« PLEASE GIVE US OUR RIGHT [CTRL] KEY BEHAVING AS A [CTRL] KEY BACK !!!
»

To summarize further, AFAIK, there is ONE person in the world happy that
the french right [CTRL] has been broke, 100% of the other french
keyboard users who want their [CTRL] key back,...

...and the rest of the world doesn't use a french keyboard and doesn't
care.

2014-04-21 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Great ! Now the FR right [Ctrl] is B.R.O.K.E.N on Ubuntu 14.04 as well.

Given the number of french Ubuntu users (+ upcoming derivatives) I think
you'll have your vote and survey very soon, just by taking a look at
lauchpad bug entries and new comments on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1013881 - which are not reflected here -
some of the latest ones being very hmmm... vocal.

Sergey, you might want to check Ubuntu bug

There are some other loud voices there that you might consider as
taking part to the vote that you want.

I had in my office 2 peopl that complained about this, this month. Maybe
you could count them as well ?

2014-04-17 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
BTW Sergey, I'm a bit surprised that you want a vote to fix something
that people complain about, when you didn't need any vote to break it in
the first place...

Would you need a vote, I suggest that you put a survey system online by
yourself on any web page that you'd like (so you know the vote is
impartial), and we let people know about it...

If you asks for a vote, it sounds logical that you organize it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-03-19 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Repeating :

1/ Standard French keyboard has NO [CtrlGr] key. It does have 2 normal
[Ctrl] keys bearing the exact same label. The right [Ctrl] key actually
is a right [Ctrl] key and no other modifier or whatever.

2/ There are quite a *lot* of common, daily used by professional IT
staff, keyboard shortcuts or combinations such as [Ctrl]-[Arrows],
[Ctrl]-[PageUp/Down], [Ctrl]-[Home], [Ctrl]-[End], plus all such
combinations adding [Shift], then [Ctrl]-L, [Ctrl]-M...

- All these day-long used combinations can be conveniently played with
2 (or 3) fingers when the right [Ctrl] key actually is a right [Ctrl]
key, and changing this key breaks them all, needing people to start
using both hands for typing what they have typed with 2 fingers for 30
YEARS ! And mistype. And mistype. And mistype.

3/ The issue with Rythmbox looks solved for long, and who wants to break
professional use of a keyboard for a solved bug in a music player ?

4/ Nobody (normal user) I talked to has ever heard about a level 5
story, nor do people give a damn.

5/ Everybody wanting to type non-breakable space in word processors
(LibreOffice...) do it with [Ctrl]-[Shift]-[Space] and don't need a
specifically modified right Ctrl for that.

6/ Breaking right [Ctrl] breaks other apps that specifically request it
NOT to be broke, such as [VirtualBox] - again professional stuff.

Breaking the right [Ctrl] keys on the french keyboard is plain stupid,
period.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-03-19 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Even though I've been an IT professional for the past 3O years, I went
to a large computer store in France over lunch time, to find out if such
thing as a [CtrlGr] key could possibly exist on a french keyboard.

Let me tell you : I couldn't find any.

OTOH, I was surprised to notice that some tablets with removable
keyboards, as well as some ultrabooks with space-saver keyboards, did
not have a right [Ctrl] key at all !

All have a left [Ctrl], left [Alt] and right [AltGr].

The vast majority of times, they have a right [Ctrl] key which is
similar to the left one.

But sometimes there is no right [Ctrl] at all !

This single fact prohibits a standard keymap giving a different
assignation to the right [Ctrl] key, because this key may well not even
exist on a given keyboard ! Thus you cannot rely on it for any feature
that could be positively necessary.

That makes Yet Another Good Reason™ to keep the good 'ole behaviour of
having 2 similarily mapped [Ctrl] keys.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-03-18 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I had yet another good reason to revert to a normal right [CTRL] key
on a Fedora this morning:

I was working in a terminal with several open terminal tabs. Switching
between tabs is made using [Ctrl]-[PageUp] and [Ctrl]-[PageDown] - same
goes with other Gnome tabbed apps, as well as Firefox and Chromium...

If you have a working right [Ctrl] key, switching tabs is easy, you just
need 2 fingers from your right hand.

If you don't have a working right [Ctrl] key, you need both hands.

Having the broken right [Ctrl] key was so annoying at work, that I had
to fix it immediately.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-03-16 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
(In reply to comment #50)
Could someone create poll on some french(belgian) web site, linux-oriented.
 Which behavior would be preferable?

A poll would be pointless as its representativeness would be very hard to
determine.
Most users don't care as long as it works and may not even know there is a
poll somewhere.

The matter is : French keyboard have, and have always had since the PC
keyboards exist (that makes 30 years), 2 similar [CTRL] keys that have
the same printed label and are expected to exhibit the same behaviour.

AND THEY ALWAYS HAVE BEEN SO IN ANY LINUX OR other OS keymaps, and
especially default keymaps - if anybody wants to customize HER keyboard,
then it's HER choice, but by no means a default.

OTOH French keyboard have a left [Alt] key and a right [AltGr] keys
having different labels and expected to have different roles.

This is extremely clear. Both [CTRL] keys should act as [CTRL] keys.
Left one, rigth one, period.

Some softwares - such as Virtualbox - will want to use the left or right
CTRL key for some specific role, and then it's printed in their
documentation and the corresponding key is supposed to exist and be
correctly mapped. It is nonsense to find oneself with a keymap in which
some highly classical and standard key just doesn't happen to exist
anymore just because of a once-upon-a-time existing issue (since solved)
with a shortcut on a music player that nobody cares about !?!?!? You
don't want to break a professional keyboard just because of arguable
choices in a toy !

I spent a couple days extremely disappointed to have a broken right
[CTRL] key on a french keyboard on recent Arch installs, thus being
unable to use VirtualBox properly, and googling around (and let me tell
you that my googling showed me a *lot* of french people are really upset
with this as well) I finally found out that this breakage comes from
this commit :

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-
config/commit/symbols/fr?id=518c769df2e9ce70cb721769a08b81504f243b2a

Let me tell you that this breakage of right [CTRL], assigning it to
ANOTHER function than right [CTRL] is completely inappropriate and
upsetting.

I therefore hereby specifically request this absurd modification to be
reverted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 221112]

2014-03-13 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 576181] Re: Lucid - Screen flickering with ATI Radeon Xpress 1100

2014-01-08 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Thi bug is most probably still there, and most probably still the same
as bug #560104 that has been around, unfixed, for about 4 years (and is
still there), and went thru all future and development releases
without any fix, so the eternal request please test latest development
version without ever fixing anything is just plain ridiculous.

The way Ubuntu bugs get closed is usually when the initial reporter is
either dead or tired of such requests, so the bug in the end gets
expired. Not fixed.

Just my 2 cents.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1063969] Re: NVIDIA does not work with framebuffer drivers

2012-11-15 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
The instructions in bug #1063969 comment #7 allowed me to re-enable
graphical splash on all of the 3 following NVidia configs - and all keep
properly working framebuffer text consoles 1-6 :

- Toshiba Satellite L735-101 : NVIDIA GPU GeForce 315M (GT218)
- Dell Inspiron 9300 : NVIDIA GPU GeForce Go 6800 (NV41)
- Asus M3N78-VM Motherboard with integrated NVIDIA GPU GeForce 8200 (C77)

Works perfectly, so why does this damn NVidia drivers package blacklist
framebuffers ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1042211] Re: [quantal] [regression] [i915] Corrupted display, desktop and menus don't repaint correctly using Mesa 9.0 (8.0.4 works)

2012-09-07 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
This is most probably not the right place for reporting this, bug I can
hardly create a new bug report outside of any working GUI...

Today's (2012/09/07) latest updates on Quantal Beta completely broke
graphics on 2 different Intel Atom netbooks :

- Asus EeePC 1005PE running Quantal Beta 1 AMD64

- Acer eMachines eM355

On both machines, LightDM login screen is OK, but as soon as logged in,
I get a flickering, completely unusable display. Unity doesn't start (or
starts and fails at the same time). No way to launch anything from
there. I'm stuck.

and
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/9.0~git20120821.c1114c61-0ubuntu2/+build/3747157

using dpkg -i *, fixed my EeePC 1005PE (AMD64 arch)

Installing the dpkg -i *_i386.deb only on the eMachines M355 (i686
arch) also fixed it.

Confirming that downgrading :

libgl1-mesa-dri_9.0~git20120821.c1114c61-0ubuntu2
libglapi-mesa_9.0~git20120821.c1114c61-0ubuntu2

libglu1-mesa_9.0~git20120821.c1114c61-0ubuntu2

Fixed both of my 2 machines.

That's a strike ;-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1043171] Re: [Quantal] [Regression] corrupt X11 background (white) on Intel

2012-09-01 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
My symptoms here do not look like bug #1044552 but may, or may not, be
related to bug #104221.

However moving windows around is not what causes most screen corruption
(unless Windows moves and touch the launchbar, then the background isn't
repainted properly).

My symtoms are :

1- Screen background disappears and is replaced with plain bright white
2- Contextual (right-button) menus appear empty (only grey background) but
their textual contents appear as soon as I hover my mouse over them.
3- Hovering my mouse over the launchbar causes text labels to appear (which is
normal) but when they disappear (moving the mouse elsewhere) the background
isn't redrawn so it leaves a white corruption.
4- Possible other problems that I didn't notice yet ?

I could only make a screenshot of problem #1.
I cannot screenshot #2 as the screenshot key is disabled when a contextual menu
is displayed.
I cannot screenshot #3 as the background is redrawn when I press the screenshot
key.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1043171] [NEW] [Quantal] [Regression] corrupt X11 background (white) on Intel

2012-08-29 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Quantal, Asus EeePC 1005PE, Intel display netbook.

Screen background goes plain white instead of background image.

Hovering the mouse and right-clicking on the background causes it to
reappear.

Hovering the mouse on the Unity laucher causes white corruption to
reappear on the background.

This didn't happen before Quantal on this machine, thus this is an
annoying regression.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 713864] Re: Black screen with nouveau on a GeForce 8600M GT, either LiveCD or fresh install

2012-03-24 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Warning ! I have already seen 3 different machines with video cards :

- Nvidia C77 (Geforce 8200)
and
- Nvidia GeForce 315M (GT218)
and
- Another Nvidia which I don't remember

That will not boot Precise at all (and hang on black screen) if nouveau
isn't blacklisted with nouveau.blacklist=1 in grub command line.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 694813] Re: [Maverick] X11 radeon fails badly with [Radeon Xpress 200M]

2011-04-28 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Some issues described in this bug report seems to be better now
(although bug #318325 is still present).

Starting KMail doesn't cause immediate display failure anymore and there
are no other immediately visible issues. However I haven't used this
machine in Natty for long, so some issues may appear after some use (but
that's an old computer I don't use much except as a backup machine
theses days... so I may not notice...)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 694813] [NEW] [Maverick] X11 radeon fails badly with [Radeon Xpress 200M]

2010-12-27 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

System: Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi

Video board :

   *-display
description: VGA compatible controller
product: RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]
vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
physical id: 5
bus info: p...@:01:05.0
version: 00
width: 32 bits
clock: 66MHz
capabilities: pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
configuration: driver=radeon latency=66 mingnt=8
resources: irq:17 memory:f800-fbff
ioport:9000(size=256) memory:fc00-fc00 memory:fc02-fc03

This board used to work *perfectly* in Ubuntu by the old times where the
fglrx driver could manage it, but new fglrx doesn't support old ATI
boards such as Xpress 200M anymore, so I have to use the radeon
driver.

Since :

- Board badly suffers from bug #318325 (so suspend to RAM is impossible)

But more recently, since Maverick, new trouble appeared :

- In normal use, mouse cursor disappears and reappears only after
shitfing back and forth to a text console. Trying « Option SWcursor
» in xorg.conf completely corrupts display from the start.

- The use of KMail (very precisely) causes the display to blink / become
irreversibly black / fail completely

- Trying radeon.modeset=0 in /etc/default/grub causes X to segfault at
startup.

The board now gives usable results only by using « Driver fbdev » which is
highly suboptimal.

- fbdev gives no corruption, sometimes full screen blinks in fulscreen
modes, still suspend is unusable (per bug #318325 )

So the more Ubuntu evolves, the less that video card - that once
perfectly worked... - is usable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560104] [NEW] ATI X display flickers badly after system resume

2010-04-10 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

This is probably a duplicate of #318325 but I didn't know how to submit
my system's ubuntu-bug collected-data without submitting as a new bug
;-)

Furthermore #318325 is more than 1 year old, but still there in Lucid
Beta2, so let's push it up a bit ;-)

Machine: Acer Aspire 3104WLMi
CPU: Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3500+
RAM: 1.5 GB
Graphics: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

Currently running: Lucid Beta 2

Problem description :

- After resuming from suspend to RAM, X display flickers badly and
apparently at random ; image is visible and computer usable - not hung
- but always badly flickering until reboot.

- Shifting back and forth to texte console then to X doesn't help X.

- After resuming from hibernante to disk, display is OK.

= Worth noting that it happens with ati_drv but, in the old days where
fglrx did manage this card (until 8.10 Intrepid if I remember well), it
was OK. This problem appeared as soon as I had to shift to ati_drv for
«fglrx not supporting old cards in new Xorg anymore» :-(

I'll check the workarounds proposed in bug #318325 and comment below.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2010-04-10 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Added new bug #560104 which is certainly a duplicate of the present one,
but creating a new bug was the only way I found to upload my system's
data gathered by ubuntu-bug.

So my machine is Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi, ATI Technologies Inc RS482
[Radeon Xpress 200M]

Suffering from this bug since fglrx doesn't manage this old board
anymore and had to switch to ati_drv.

More info in my bug #560104 .
