2018-07-12 Thread Till Kamppeter
I upgraded from Bionic to Cosmic by editing /etc/apt/sources.list
replacing all occurences of bionic by cosmic and then running

sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade

After some time the error occured and I cleaned up with

sudo apt install -f

and completed the upgrade with another

sudo apt dist-upgrade

which this time completed without errors.

In the end I did

sudo apt autoremove

to finish up.

So the error occured only once and after cleaning up I could complete
the upgrade.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1242881] Re: Greeter shows in secondary monitor mode when only one monitor

2013-10-21 Thread Till Kamppeter
The mouse starts off on the ghost screen on to left of the real screen
having the login facility there. I move it a longer distance to the
right and it enters the real screen, making the login facility flipping
into the real screen. Then I can actually log in.

The live session is unusable though, with the mouse I can spot the ghost
screen on the left, but as I cannot work blindly with a mouse I cannot
pull the windows into the visible screen.

Note that my PC has no VGA connector (only HDMI and DisplayPort), so
there must be a bug in the X driver for the Intel GPUs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1228570] Re: Login often fails

2013-10-04 Thread Till Kamppeter
I am also logging into my Thinkpad Twist via SSH (with -X option to be
able to use X apps) and indeed this influences whether I can log in. If
I am able to log in directly on my laptop's screen, I am able to log in
again and again as long as I do not log in via SSH. If I log in via SSH
from another machine while I am logged in on the laptop's own screen and
then log out on the laptop's screen I cannot log in again on the
laptop's screen. To be able to log in again, I have to log out of the
SSH session and log in again via SSH, after that I can log in again on
the laptop's screen.

My .Xauthority file is most probably the culprit. The laptop's screen is
DISPLAY :0, the SSH session has DISPLAY :10 (see DISPLAY variable in
terminal). The .Xauthority file has up to three lines. Most is
unreadable binary data, all contain till-twist (the host name of the
laptop) near the beginning, some binary bytes, a number, some more
binary bytes, MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1, and more binary bytes. In a healthy
(I can log in from the laptop's native screen) .XAuthority all lines
have different numbers, usually 0, 10, 11 in arbitrary order, or there
are only two lines, also with different numbers out of 0, 10, and 11. A
broken (I cannot log in) .Xauthority contains two lines with the number
10 and one with 11.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1231376] [NEW] Let touch screens be used under the Wacom driver

2013-09-26 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist which is a convertible with touch screen.
In tablet mode it should be possible to easily rotate the screen
oprientation so that it can be used in both landscape and portrait mode
and even without needing to care which edge is at the bottom and which
at the top. See bug 1216065 for further information.

To be able to easily rotate the touch screen coordinate system to match
the screen content, the touch screen should be run under the wacom
driver. In addition, the Wacom driver adds some more gestures to the
touch screen.

At least on my Thinkpad Twist the switchover is easy. One only needs to
add |Atmel to the MatchProduct line in the InputClass section with
Identifier Wacom class in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-wacom.conf.
See also the attached file.

For a quick test (which survives updates and can easily be undone), copy
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-wacom.conf to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-wacom.conf and edit this file. Restart X by
rebooting or restarting lightdm.

What gets added:

- Touch coordinate system rotation (bug 1216065)
- Right-click emulation by holding a finger on the place where the right click
should happen and then tapping anywhere else with a second finger, after that
sliding the held down first finger to the desired entry of the context menu and
releasing there.

What gets lost:

- The three-and four-finger gestures described on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multitouch. Bug 1227214 needs to get fixed.

Yes, the right-click gesture of comment #7 comes from the Wacom driver.
If I remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-wacom.conf again (or the Atmel in

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1212736] Re: Touch screen: Right click should be emulated by long press, like under Windows 8 and Android

2013-09-18 Thread Till Kamppeter
The right click on the touch-operated Ubuntu Desktop is not completely
unimplemented. Besides the possibility of using the right-click
emulation of Onboard one can right-click by holding one finger on the
place where one wants to right click, and while holding the finger down
tapping with another finger on an arbitrary place of the touch screen
and after that sliding the held down first finger through the context
menu to the desired item and releasing there, which leads to the item
being selected. It works on the standard (in my case Unity) desktop and
even in XBMC.

This gesture is rather awkward and far from intuitive to find without
any instructions (see the time between this comment and my creation of
the touch screen/convertible Blueprint to which this bug is linked),
especially also where Android and Windows 8 use a long press as right
click, and the Ubuntu Desktop is usually installed as an alternative
operating system on machines which are originally supplied with Windows
or Android and so conserving operation schemes from these systems makes
switching over to Ubuntu much easier.

Also note that the right-click emulation of Universal Access only
reveals the right-click menu after releasing the button, whereas under
Android or Windows 8 the menu already pops up while long pressing. The
latter gives the user the feedback that he has pressed long enough, and
as it is also established as standard (two other operating systems use
it) we should do it this way.

One important missing feature is an easy-to-do right click. The right-

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1167301] Re: 8086:0166 [ThinkPad Twist S230u 3347] REGRESSION: Mirroring display works only with 1024x768 (4:3) whereas my laptop has 1366x768 (16:9) external monitor 1920x1080

2013-09-05 Thread Till Kamppeter
Yes, I have found out already that in the mainline I have to check 3.8
as newest good and 3.8.1 as oldest bad kernel release. Currently I am
doing a doing a GIT bisect between these two. According to the estimates
by git bisect I am currently building for the third-last stage,
finishing in 20 minutes from now (18:00 CEST), after that I have to do
more two steps of 40 minutes build time each, arriving at the result at
~19:30 CEST.

Steps so far:

3.8: GOOD
3.8.1: BAD
GIT 442b43c: BAD
GIT 8ed82bb: GOOD
GIT 97ec241: GOOD

Using git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-

The final result of my bisect is actually what I guessed in the previous
comment (see output below). The patch (also below) is simple and one can
easily see that undoing it would solve the problem.

It seems that some monitors (including my monitor) report that they are
non-continuous frequency but in reality they are. The simplest way to
fix this bug is simply to undo the patch to support such buggy monitors,
the correct fix would be an exception list with the monitors which
support resolutions which they do not report.

There should perhaps be a possibility to override this manually by a
run-time configuration bit so that for all monitors the non-reported
resolutions get listed.

If bit 0 of the features byte (0x18) is set to 0, then, according to
the EDID spec, the display is non-continuous frequency (multi-mode)

listed in Base EDID and certain Extension Blocks.

For more information, please see the EDID spec, check the notes of the

notes on the tables of the section that explains Display Range Limits

The extra modes in reality work with the monitor, and they give extra
chances to find a best match between laptop screen and external
monitor/projector.

Anyway, I will continue the bisect to confirm ...

The last good kernel was 3.8.0-8.17 and the first bad kernel was
3.8.0-9.18. The changelog between the two releases is rather small but I
do not really have an idea which change could be the culprit.

See

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.8.0-9.18

I tried to bisect commits with git, but the two tags Ubuntu-3.8.0-9.18
and Ubuntu-3.8.0-8.17 are non-linear, so git bisect does not find the
path between them.

Perhaps the debdiff or the changes described by the changelog items need
to get investigated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1212736] [NEW] Touch screen: Right click should be emulated by long press, like under Android

2013-08-15 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist convertible ultrabook (Intel Core i7).
The tablet mode (touchscreen-only operation, keyboard folded away) get
continuously working better.

One important missing feature is an easy-to-do right click. The right-
click emulation button in Onboard is a rather awkward solution, as
Onboard only shows up when selecting a text input field.

I suggest to emulate the right-click by a long press on the screen. It
is done in Android this way, too, and works very well for me.

Note that the long-press right-click functionality in Universal Access
in the Control Center only works with a mouse and not with the touch
screen (another bug).

I am using Saucy 64-bit and the standard Unity desktop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068994] Re: button1 gets stuck after a while

2013-08-13 Thread Till Kamppeter
This is fixed in the X version in the x-staging PPA. Will this fix make
it into Saucy (and so make tablet mode of convertibles usable)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068994]

2013-08-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
I did further testing over longer time and no stuck button. Its seems
that with the current X from the x-staging PPA and the current Onboard
from the onboard PPA the problem is solved.

I have tried a Quantal live CD now and there the bug does not show. The
external monitor mirrors the image of the internal monitor in exactly
the same resolution as the internal monitor, 1366x768.

I have also run xrandr and the external monitor reports back many more
modes than under Raring or Saucy:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1199447] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2013-07-09 Thread Till Kamppeter
The missing Unity was caused by an update which uninstalled Unity. After
installing Unity again I have a correct desktop again. I do not know
whether the crash was caused by missing Unity (but then X should error
and not crash).

Another touch problem: If I run Chromium browser and try to drag and

2013-05-01 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have more experience with the onboard-aided right click (same running
under Val;grind or without Valgrind):

Touch-clicking the right-click key on onboard makes it turning grey.
After that doing one touch click on the desktop background does nothing.
A second touch click on the background makes the right-click menu open
and onboard disappear.

Right-clicking in Chromium does not work. The second click only makes
onboard disappear but does not pop up the right-click menu of Chromium.

2013-05-01 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have set up running X under Valgrind now. I have installed

xserver-xorg-core-dbg
valgrind
xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg
xserver-xorg-video-modesetting-dbg
xserver-xorg-input-evdev-dbg
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-dbg
libdrm2-dbg
libdrm-intel1-dbg

ThenI have installed Maarten's script, made it executable, and linked
it. After that I have restarted X via

sudo restart lightdm

X is mnuch slower now, probably due to Valgrind's work.

First observation under Valgrind:

onboard pops up when touch-clicking an input field, but onboard is non-
functional. Independent whether I touch-click the keys or use my
external mouse, the keys do not react. No changes of the key's color, no
character appearing in the input field. Also right-clicking does not
work as one cannot operate the right-click button.

Also with 1.14 XBMC behaves as in comment #39, not reacting to touch

put into the lower right corner of the screen when touch-clicking an

coordinates of the lower right corner.

With LibreOffice Writer I can reproduce the crash reliably. Right after
login I touch-click its icon in the Launcher, get the dialog to recover
the document of the previous session, I reject, and as soon as I click
Yes to confirm, X crashes, and X crashes fast enough so that
LibreOffice does not clean up the document which I have rejected. In the
next session I will get asked again.

If you cannot reproduce the crash as you do not have a broken document,
try starting a new document and then kill -9 LibreOffice. On the next
session it should ask you for recovering your document.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015183]

2013-04-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
Daniel, Peter, I am using the the full GIT branch touch-grab-race-
condition-56578-v2 which is 1.14 and here I have no problem with Sugar's
Paint application (rgbPaint, am I right?). I can paint both with an
external Bluetooth mouse with the left button held down and with my
finger on the touch screen of the Lenovo Thinkpad Twist.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015183]

2013-04-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
Daniel, on my 1.14 I do not see any problem, also when testing with xev.
Both with the external mouse and my finger on the touch screen I see
ButtonPress events when I press and hold the mouse button or when I put
my finger onto the screen and I get ButtonRelease events when I release
the mouse button or take my finger from the screen. This works all
correctly for me.

2013-04-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
Another touch problem: If I run Chromium browser and try to drag and
drop one of the tabs using the touch screen, the left button gets stuck
down and it does not get even unstuck if I continue working with the
external Bluetooth mouse. I can only kill the session.

It also happens sometimes that X crashes but without any message in
/var/log/syslog.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015183]

2013-04-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
Also with 1.14 XBMC behaves as in comment #39, not reacting to touch
clicks. Looking more deeply into XBMC's behavior, the mouse cursor is
put into the lower right corner of the screen when touch-clicking an
arbitrary place, perhaps all touch clicks are registered with the
coordinates of the lower right corner.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015183]

2013-04-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have set up running X under Valgrind now. I have installed

xserver-xorg-core-dbg
valgrind
xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg
xserver-xorg-video-modesetting-dbg
xserver-xorg-input-evdev-dbg
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-dbg
libdrm2-dbg
libdrm-intel1-dbg

ThenI have installed Maarten's script, made it executable, and linked
it. After that I have restarted X via

sudo restart lightdm

X is mnuch slower now, probably due to Valgrind's work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015183]

2013-04-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
First observation under Valgrind:

onboard pops up when touch-clicking an input field, but onboard is non-
functional. Independent whether I touch-click the keys or use my
external mouse, the keys do not react. No changes of the key's color, no
character appearing in the input field. Also right-clicking does not
work as one cannot operate the right-click button.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015183]

2013-04-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have more experience with the onboard-aided right click (same running
under Val;grind or without Valgrind):

Touch-clicking the right-click key on onboard makes it turning grey.
After that doing one touch click on the desktop background does nothing.
A second touch click on the background makes the right-click menu open
and onboard disappear.

Right-clicking in Chromium does not work. The second click only makes
onboard disappear but does not pop up the right-click menu of Chromium.

Finally I succeeded to make X crashing again, I opened several programs
(Firefox, Chromium, Thunderbird, Calculator, digikam), did some clicks
in them, and closed them again. Then I opened LibreOffice Writer via the
Launcher and got a window asking to recover a previous document which
was not correctly closed. I rejected and when I answered the question
whether I really want to reject with Yes, X crashed.
