[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442574] Re: mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed

this one should not be able to break his Ubuntu system by installing a
package with apt-get

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-05-18 Thread Toni Ruottu
http://www.h-online.com/open/features/What-s-new-in-
Linux-2-6-34-1000122.html writes: On some laptops equipped with both
onboard graphics and a separate graphics chip, the kernel can now switch
between the two and switch off whichever is not being used in order to
save power. 'VGA Switcheroo' currently only works on some laptops and
does not offer the ease of use of Windows, as it only switches when X
Server is restarted – something which is not expected to change in the
near future.

Is Ubuntu 10.10 going to support this? Does anybody have plans for the
user interface? I suppose the login screen should be extended with a UI
element for switching between different graphics cards. Is it possible?
Does it make sense?

then switching to Intel at boot time. The system was not able to bootup
until I removed the fglrx package.

right? Your bios doesn't support this?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505560] [NEW] boot fails after changing graphics card

2010-01-10 Thread Toni Ruottu
Public bug reported:

When I installed Ubuntu my system had an ATI graphics card. Once I got
to the desktop I used System - Administration - Hardware Drivers to
install a driver for it. Later I wanted to use an Intel graphics card,
so I disabled the ATI card from bios and enabled the Intel card instead.
When booting up the computer again it failed and got stuck in a text
console. I had no idea, why and I was worried that my Intel card was
broken, as one of my friends had got the card working without any
problems.

About a year later I read that the Intel card would support kernel mode
setting, so I gave it another try, but it was still broken. After
spending quite some time asking about the problem in various places I
finally found out that I should remove some packages related to the ATI
card. I think it was removing xorg-driver-fglrx package that finally
fixed the problem and I was able to use my Intel card.

By filing this bug I'm not hoping for a system that would revolutionize
the graphics card infrastructure of the whole Linux eco system or what
ever, but could you please change the system to a slightly more
understandable direction, so getting a new graphics card (that has been
proven to work in Ubuntu!) to work in Ubuntu would take a one day,
instead of a year. Maybe you could put a notification on first boot with
the new card For your new graphics card to work we have to remove some
stuff related to your old card. Sorry for the inconvenience. Press ok to
continue. Or something along those lines.

** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442574] Re: mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed

2009-11-20 Thread Toni Ruottu
Did you know there is a bug for not being able to switch graphics card on the
fly.
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/312756

I do understand that getting that feature will take some time. However,
it is ridiculous that Windows users can switch their graphics card on
the fly, but Ubuntu users are expected to both install/remove some
software package and alter the graphics card setting in their bios.
Ubuntu provides the user with no hint that you could actually make the
graphics card switching work by removing some package, and even if it
did this would be hard for a regular user to understand. I'm an
experienced user, and I thought for a year that my other graphics card
might be broken.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442574] Re: mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed

2009-11-20 Thread Toni Ruottu
My bottom line is. It should atleast be possible to make video cards
work by switching the actual hardware or by toggling it from bios. I'm
ok with asking the user to install another driver when the new card is
detected. I'm not ok with asking the user remove one driver to make
another card work.

Someone should found a project called One single machete cut to fix
the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 431955] Re: xorg fails with module i810 error (module does not exist

2009-10-20 Thread Toni Ruottu
Errors with my Intel card might have been different from this bug.
However, I got rid of them by removing restricted ATI driver packages.
So, in case some of you have restricted driver packages installed for
other video cards, I'd try removing them for a while, and reporting
back, if this fixed the issue or not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 421442] Re: system freeze on boot with proprietary nvidia drivers 185

2009-09-15 Thread Toni Ruottu
I have the same problem with this card.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44 [Quadro NVS 285]
(rev a1)
Subsystem: nVidia Corporation Device 029d
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at f600 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
Memory at f800 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
Memory at f700 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at fc00 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: access denied
Kernel driver in use: nvidia
Kernel modules: nvidia, nvidiafb

The problem appeared after a recent update. It, how ever, does not
freeze the whole computer but simply the user interface. I'm not able to
do anything locally, but I can open an ssh connection to the computer.
Restarting gdm or executing chvt from the remote shell does not help.
Moving /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.foo seemed to fix the
issue after a reboot, by defaulting to another driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 183913] Re: [RV280] 320x240 screen mode not supported

2009-08-29 Thread Toni Ruottu
I made some tests with *Jaunty*, as that is what I happen to have
installed on my systems.

On Jaunty the bug does not exist for ATI Technologies Inc Mobility
Radeon HD 3650

On Jaunty the problem depicted in my screen shot from 2008-09-04 is
still relevant for Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400/G450 (rev 82)

I don't seem to own an ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
(rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) video card anymore. It must have belonged
to some of the old PCs I got rid of earlier.

I'll update the MGA situation once I update that particular system to
Karmic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 183913] Re: [RV280] 320x240 screen mode not supported

2009-08-29 Thread Toni Ruottu
The confusion is my fault. At some point I just noticed I had been
testing on multiple systems. After that I wanted to find out whether or
not the bug was video card specific. It turns out to be such and Matrox
seems to currently have the error, so concentrating on Matrox in future
will probably make sense. Although I was expecting there to be some
common library for scaling between different resolutions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 183913] Re: [RV280] 320x240 screen mode not supported

2009-08-22 Thread Toni Ruottu
In that case I opt to test it with Karmic once it has been released, and
if it doesn't work I retest it with Karmic+1, when I happen to have that
at hand. I'm not going to take the risk that someone might not work on
it before Karmic, even if I tested it. The time when this gets fixed is
not that crusial for me. How ever, I hope you prevent the bug for
timeouting, since if the bug timeouts I might forget about it for a long
period which would unnecessarily delay the test results.
