[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1992235] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: Updated to 22.10 beta last week. When I return after screensaver activation, the display freezes. Sometimes the greeter fades in a little bit, sometimes it is just the background image. Every time, I can move the mouse and the cursor changes when hovering over the password box (or where it would have been). I can type my password and the session unlocks. I know this because the greeter process is gone, and the mouse cursor now changes as if it were my desktop (input boxes, buttons, etc) but the display still has never updated. This has happened about 5 times now, but reproducing it could be hard because it only seems to happen after an idle period when the screen locks itself. Manually locking/unlocking the screen works fine. Switching off the monitors with "xset dpms force off" also doesn't seem to trigger it. There doesn't appear to be anything useful in the log files, but I think apport has attached them anyway. Happy to do any debugging necessary. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1956263] [NEW] Situationm
Public bug reported: I have been using ubuntu for nearly ten years, but have only recently started taking things seriously. My particular issue is that every now and then I have a screen blinking problem. I have done a bunch of research, and it points to the grub configuration. I have downloaded and installed grub customizer. But I am not sure what all the options are and am afraid of messing anyting up. Not sure that coming here will help, or how I can pay for any help. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1882527] [NEW] mysql timeoutsec results in killing mysql process
Public bug reported: MySQL on 20.04 has TimeoutSec set to 600 (IIRC) in the systemd script. This has the effect of killing the MySQL process if this timeout is reached. IMHO this is a Very Bad Idea. A database server process should only be force killed by a user action. I would prefer that the server had unlimited time to cleanly shutdown and startup (eg if recovering). Our DB is about 500GB with some very large tables (for us at least) eg. 250GB and we've had more than a few unfortunate delays as a result of delayed startup caused by recoveries because MySQL was killed prematurely. Because MySQL 8.0 has reduced the default logging level, it was not clear to me that the process was being force killed. I believe the MySQL team are of the same view as me per https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=91423: ``` [12 Jul 2019 15:57] Paul Dubois Posted by developer: Fixed in 8.0.18. On Debian, long InnoDB recovery times at startup could cause systemd service startup failure. The default systemd service timeout is now disabled (consistent with RHEL) to prevent this from happening. ``` ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1882527 Title: mysql timeoutsec results in killing mysql process To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1882527/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1783404] [NEW] unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000230
Public bug reported: About a week and a half ago I would lose rendering of the desktop randomly while under a Wayland session. I would have the last displayed images on my monitor, mouse movement worked, video and audio still workedd, but visual feedback was lost when clicking on items in the browser or last app opened. Spacebar would work fine to pause a video, or media keys to stop the music player. I've been trying to hunt down the reason until I realised that I might be running under Wayland instead of Xorg. I changed the configuration option in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to disable Wayland and enabled debugging and restarted. I was away from my desk earlier when I logged, in a few minutes later the screen went black, as if it went into power saving mode. Unlike the Wayland sessions I wasn't able to get to any TTY's. Upon restarting I noticed the following, which wasn't present in the previous journal under Wayland (see attached - to large for description field). At this point, this seems to be occurring randomly. I'm happy to help with debugging if need be. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1741925] Re: Unity launcher disappears on mouse-over launcher
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1735594 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1735594 Answers: Do you have an additional monitor connected? NO What is the display resolution you use? 12??X800 Do things still crash if you change the resolution to something smaller than the native NO Thank you for your direction. In attempt to narrow the failure down I examined the two visible symptoms: 1. Mouse-over the launcher causes the launcher and the task line at the top to disappear 2. There appears to be a recovery time of 10 to 30 seconds and then the launcher and all reappear The most likely culprits appear to be: 1. Mouse software; I assume that is part of the Lunux kernel. I was unable to find any information on the Ubuntu software stack or architecture so I could not identify the process(es) used for the mouse. To evaluate mouse malfunction I (a) tried both the laptop’s mouse-pad and a USB mouse with no difference in behavior and (b) did a mouse-over of some Linux apps where the button or widget reacts to a mouse-over; the mouse-over behavior worked as expected. My conclusion is that the mouse and the mouse code is behaving properly. 2. Launcher code; without a software stack the name of the process is unknowable. Doing a query in the System Monitor gave a likely “api-spi-bus-launcher” (see that attached image, “Launcher properties 2018-01-09 12-44-12.png”). An strace on that pid sudo strace -p 1488 -b execve -o launcher.txt [sudo] password for bruce: yielded restart_syscall(<... resuming interrupted poll ...>) = 1 read(3, "\2\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 16) = 8 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN}], 2, -1) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) read(3, "\2\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 16) = 8 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN}], 2, -1) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLIN}]) read(3, "\2\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 16) = 8 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN}], 2, -1 I do not know how to read strace output. The “restart_syscall” line looks suspiciously like an error recover execution. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1728651] [NEW] System hangs after iwlwifi firmware crash
Public bug reported: Since upgrading to Kubuntu 17.10 my HP EliteBook 820 G3 hangs at unpredictable times. I have experienced probably 20 hangs. Once the system is hung no mouse movement, NumLock toggle, VT switch, Ctrl+Alt+Del, SysRq keys, SSH attempts have any effect whatsoever. Any audio playing is stuck looping in the hardware buffer. The system is really stuck. Only the keyboard backlight is still responsive. The only correlation I have noticed is that the system only hangs if WiFi is enabled. This morning I experienced two hangs in ten minutes necessitating reboots. Having disabled WiFi the system has been stable since ~1100 (~5 hours). Often, I see a iwlwifi hardware reset in the logs before the system dies: /var/log/syslog:Oct 30 11:49:30 fry kernel: [ 6529.550751] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x8200. (apport has hopefully uploaded the full log, please lmk if not). Sometimes the message doesn't make it into the logs, and ext4 truncates the file at the next mount. There seems to be no correlation with any messages immediately before the wifi chip dies. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm at home or at work. I have wired ethernet at work simultaneously with wifi, but the wifi provides IPv6 so I would imagine most traffic uses wifi, so it's hard to say whether there's any effect of the traffic load on the probability of failure. Here is a sample of the firmware load: /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.604743] iwlwifi :02:00.0: enabling device ( -> 0002) /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.611790] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-8000C-33.ucode failed with error -2 /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.611930] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-8000C-32.ucode failed with error -2 /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.620028] iwlwifi :02:00.0: loaded firmware version 31.532993.0 op_mode iwlmvm /var/log/syslog.5.gz:Oct 24 15:37:26 fry kernel: [7.650972] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8260, REV=0x208 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8260 (rev 3a) Any help appreciated. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1307114] [NEW] Blank screen after resume if lid closed
Public bug reported: I have a Lenovo G570 laptop (Intel Sandy Bridge graphics). If I suspend via the user interface, then resume by pressing the power button, everything works. However, when closing the lid to suspend, I observe the following sequence: 1. Close lid, wait a few seconds for suspend. 2. Open lid. Laptop starts up, light-locker screen is visible. 3. Type password into light-locker, hit enter. 4. Screen goes blank. It is totally black i.e. it seems that the backlight is off. Moving the mouse, pressing keys or trying to change the brightness with the keyboard shortcut does not bring back the display. I can get a console by C-A-F1 and then restart lightdm to get a working display again. Penalver christopher.m.penal...@gmail.com To: brucey...@live.com Subject: [Bug 1048874] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __libc_message() loading modesetting module - corrupted double-linked list Date: Tue, Jan 7, 2014 03:14 Adam Bruce, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1236353] [NEW] Xmir crashes on plugging in external
Public bug reported: I just plugged in an external monitor to my X301 and Xmir ?? appeared to crash and then restart with the external correctly recognised. I was able to use displays to change the location of the external and launcher placement and am typing this message now using the configuration. I had to log back into Ubuntu and restart my apps after plugging in the external. Also, unplugging the external worked fine - reconfigured to laptop display only with no problem. Most of the time I'm not sure but a few examples of positive proof. I had several bios chips in my computers get out of whack. Pulling the pins and allowing them to reset worked a few times but eventually he did something that caussed the bios chip to fail. Second, one time I was trying to put a stop to it. I named my new encrypted hard drive and the system This disk fights fascists. Eventually it got hacked into. But I thougt it failed because I loike to play with my system and sometimes I push it beyond its limit so the OS gets a kink in it and fails. So about six months later mjy wife's computer was having problems. So I wsa taking a look and lo and behold someone had named one of her disks. the following: tHIS dISK fIGHTS fASCISTS. So I knew positively it was a cracker then., I take it that they were trying to send me a message that they were using her Windows computer to break into mine through Samba and getting the output to go to her disk as they could easily hack windows. Another time they went into the SSL certificates and wrote ntoes about how easy it was to crack SsL. Another time I was listening toa a Woody Guthrie song on youtube about a famous massacre of union members. The Ludlow massacre I think. So the army or national guard was going in and were killing the strikers in the 1930s. Soi about the time Guthrie started going into how they were shaving to pull guns on the army or national guard, this banner went accross the scren detailing how I was listening to violent songs. I suspect that was some idiot at Homeland security. Who else would get worked up about a song sung by a dead guy named Woody Guthrie who wrote a very famous patriotic song that the kids sing in school. I was hospitalzied thirty years for paranoia and anxiety and tthew way the US goverment is acting reminds me of that time. The only difference between then and now is that then when I was hospitalized, it was abnormal to think the government was spying on someone. Tnus I spent a few weeks in a mental ward. Now, if you don't think they are spying on you, then you truly are crazy. I hate what some of the sorriest Americans have let happen to our country., I don't know who is hacking me and harssing me, but if you know of any group or organization that could keep this from happening anymore I might avoid a tri0p to the hospital again. Because this cracker is reallygetting to me and making my life miseragle. I dln't do illegal things, I am not violent, I have been married nine years to my wife.. I occasionally watch a little run of the mill porn. But someone is attacking me. I have one person I suspect who was in a group therapy session with me who was really mentally ill and he thought I insulted him. He claimed he did security work and if I had to name one susectit would be him. But I don't know why thiis happened. I did not check to make sure I got a good download so this could be aa man in the middle download. Any help you can give I would appreciate. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1181712] Re: I don't know the difference between bugs and my system cracker
I just noticed that my comcast mail account was hacked into. Since my wife has had three knee surgeries in the past year, we have not been anywhere other than here at home. So any access to that account from an IP address other than our own was hacking. Comcast advises that this did occur and I am awaiting paperwork to set in motion attempts to prosecute as well as sue the intruder or intrudres. Since I practiced law for many years and worked for a gentleman who was a former Presdent of the American Trial Lawyers ASsociation, I have contacts who can steer me to the best lawyers in the business who will go after deep pockets if there are any. If the intruder can be identified, I will be vigorously prosecuting both criminally and civilly. Hopefully no Ubuntu associate was involved in this breaking into my email account. Thankks for what little you did to help, and your finding the nit to pick with my insistence that I had been repeatedly hacked as well as stalked and harassed. Fortunately Pennsylvania has strong laws to protect internet users. Good day. \ Bruce Perry On Sun, May 19, 2013 at 7:36 PM, RQuarry 1181...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: The bug description needs to detail what caused the issue. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1181712] Re: I don't know the difference between bugs and my system cracker
I certainly didn't think that bug was surveillance. In fact, they haven't been around in quite a while. But it has happened and it's pretty obvious when it did happen. ] But I've decided to deal with it in a better way. George Orwell once wrote that the most hated man in England was Nosey P)arker. If you don't know who Nosey Parkeris, you need to read more Orwell. Ninetten Eighty Four is a good starting place you know,, but surely it couldn't happen here. But Nosey Parker has a lot to say these days. In fact he recently created a twitter unit. https://twitter.com/noseyparkerunit You might also find him blogging one day on badattitudes.com/MT He used to spend a lot of time there, or so I heard, but he used a pseudonym so I don't really know who he was when he was there. On Tue, May 21, 2013 at 6:12 PM, Bruce Perry bruceharrispe...@gmail.comwrote: What you say may be true on a micro scale, but on a macro scale,,, such as when the person goes into my SSL certificates area and leaves notes talkng about how useless SSL is and he knows how can beat it, (and I don't have a clue as to whether he changed the security of the whole machine any more than you are from me telling you this story and expecting yout to immediately believe it. , But then maybe the only way to find tut if this is dangerous is to fhnd and locate the guy. We are putting everyone at risk by ignoring it in light of my very careful decision not to mention this except to my wife for years. I have thought many times that some of it was just coincidence. But eventually coincidence falls to reallism. The most telling thing happening was my wife's disk drive just by happenstance getting the name that mimmicked my own Woody Guthrie parody making an analogy between a guitar and the personal compouter. But someone had to break into my wife's computer to do that. I'm so clueless about a lof of this that I forgot the pasword on my windows machine and couldn't get any of the supposedly foolproof products out there to get into the Window machine by braking in and getting the pasword. But I've been trying to educate myself by reading many of the documents in the iinnards of the Ubuntu operating system.. As a lawyer, one of the things you have to look at is the totality of the evidence. There is overwhelming evidence of someone who enjoys cracking into my machine and may possibly be doing it on a larger scale. Frankly I don't have much of a clue, but if we were playing the game Clue, my money would be on the guy who was in therapy with me moaning and groaning about how he was treated at work, and he left the impression it was a sensitive job involving monitoring computers. And I was somewhat rude to him at that meeting, not my usual persona burt the guy needed somone to tell him the problem wasn't all ihis coworkers. This was a group therapy session after all. Maybe one of them, or a small group of them might be treating him badly but not the whole organization. Maybe his boss was a jerk and that was al it was. I've had to deal with that and when it happens, it's not so bad because everyone shares in the misery. Ignore it if you want to but when this person causes major harm all I can say is that I finally did my part. Part of me fi8nds taling like this distasteful as my years of public defending made me realize that often the innocent person is a supsect for a long time. And have only just a very. very small amount of confidence that he is the guyl. In fact, the odds are he isn't. But I[m not asking anyone to go after this guy. All I want is someone to note if some person is getting in my machine who is not at my ip address. Because my wife is essentially a shut-in and I yhave to bbe here to take care of us. So we don't log into our accounts from anywhere here but at this ip address. She uses Windows and I use Linux and my bet is that they are entering my computer through her Windows machine. I need to learn how to make a complete, independent firewall that logs everything and some advice on what computer program can see anomolies in the IP address and where and what foreign IP addresses are going when they enter here. I{'ve been hoping he goes away for years. But then something happens that has the clear mark of a malicious human's handiwork written all over it after a week, or a month, or 6 weeks or whatever goes by, and there he is again. , have had too many of those incidents such that , I can't ignore it anymore and just chalk it up0 to my paranoia and a coincidence or series of coincedences . And after years of having to endure it, I have come to realize it's not a lof of people and it's not the odd but but explanable curious happenings. It's one person stalking me. And I have no clue who it is and no reason to make it up. It's embarrassing to tell my life story. And yes, I do suffer from paranoia but it is controlled by medication, although

Public bug reported: Error message and I report it to you. then request for what happens, then request for how often, then request to give you sensitive materials with the iformation to report, then it does the same request over and over even after reporting the problem. Then the OS will pause and another error message and around and around again. Then if freezes up. If I do not consent to reporting the errors the OS will function but eventually starts to hesitate and then freezes up. This seemed to start after I tried to back up to connical free backup and the process got shut down by the computer timing out after one hour. This has been going on now for at least a week. I'm getting lockups a few times a day now on 12.10. From the syslog today I got: Mar 25 15:30:29 hostname kernel: [22367.850510] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung Mar 25 15:30:29 hostname kernel: [22367.850880] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off I also got this message prior to the above error messages: Mar 25 15:18:45 tank kernel: [21664.359940] ACPI Error: No handler for Region [CMS0] (880159a31558) [SystemCMOS] (20120320/evregion-376) Mar 25 15:18:45 tank kernel: [21664.359956] ACPI Error: Region SystemCMOS (ID=5) has no handler (20120320/exfldio-306) Mar 25 15:18:45 tank kernel: [21664.359970] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.EC0_._Q33] (Node 880159a3cde8), AE_NOT_EXIST (20120320/psparse-536) I have installed acpi-rtc-dkms_1.0_all.deb as this fixed the above ACPI Error last time. What is worse is that apport seems to be failing at submitting the data as I have the dialog box about a gpu hang popup four or five times within two to three minutes. I choose the desired frequency and then click next and it starts all over again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1135473 Title: [sandybridge-m-gt2 mesa] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a02 IPEHR: 0x0b140001 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1135473/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160037] [NEW] Since I updated to 12.10 Nvidia crashes DEL E6410
Public bug reported: I updated from a very stable 12.04(LTS) to a unreliable 12.10. Cannot get nvidia driver to load even when following following instrucions: Before switching to the nvidia drivers you need to install linux-source and linux-headers. After the source is installed, try switching to the nvidia drivers. Here is how: Switch to a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1). Login as your username. Install linux source (sudo apt-get install linux-source) and headers (sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic). Uninstall nvidia driver - this depends on which version you installed (sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current or sudo apt-get remove nvidia- current-updates or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304). Reinstall nvidia driver (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates). If it successfully installs, restart the computer (sudo shutdown -r now).
