2022-10-18 Thread Erik Meitner
Daniel, when running on Wayland the problem is gone.
I was running xorg because of laptop suspend issues(which are gone now.) I can
continue to assist with this bug, just let me know what you you need me to try.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1989744] [NEW] KB/Mouse use causing short system freezes. Happens after resume

2022-09-15 Thread Erik Meitner
Public bug reported:

Summary:
My laptop gets into a an odd state after resuming from sleep where, depending
on user activity,
the entire system freezes every 20 seconds for about 1/2 second.

This does not happen after every resume. After upgrading to 22.04 was much less
frequent than it was with 21.10. It seems that after some recent update it is
happening
more frequently again. Maybe one every 4 suspend/resume cycles.

Normal operation can be restored by rebooting or sometimes suspending
and waking.

The triggering event is complex:
* The pointer or pointer and keyboard must be actively used
* Just typing with no mouse use will not cause it to happen.
* Just moving the mouse pointer around but keeping it inside the same GUI
element(a
textarea for example) will not cause it
* Typing for more than 20 seconds and then moving the mouse one pixel will
cause it.
* Moving the mouse around constantly for over 20 seconds will cause it to
happen only
if: a key on the keyboard was hit OR the pointer moved over a new GUI
element(window
border, button, even frames in a web page)
* It is not application specific.

The following is usually logged(not always though) when the freeze happens:
==> ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.1.log <==
[1214998.964] (II) event5 - TPPS/2 Elan TrackPoint: SYN_DROPPED event - some

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1871458] [NEW] No display signal if NVIDIA driver and display scaling is active

2020-04-07 Thread Erik Steiner
Public bug reported:

I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 (20200402) with LVM encryption and automatic
logon.
So I enter my encryption password and after the motherboards boot logo it will
login automatically to desktop. I also chose the additional drivers and so
nvidia-driver-440.
Everything seems to be OK until I select a scaling above 100% (e.g. 200%) in
settings. Next reboot, I enter my encryption password. When the automatic logon
process should happen, the monitor turns off and says that no display signal is
available.

Currently I was able to return to a working setup by pressing CTRL + ALT + F4,
login and enter the following commands to remove nvidia-driver and use XORG
instead:
sudo apt purge nvidia-driver-440
sudo apt autoremove
sudo reboot

I am pretty sure that the issue will occur again, if I choose NVIDIA
driver again.

Any thoughts?

EDIT: On Ubuntu 19.04 I had a similar bug: If I started my PC and the
monitor was not turned on, the monitor reported no signal available
after turning it on. I was not able to see the boot-up field to enter my
encryption password. Unfortunately I didn't test, if I were able to
enter my password and logon anyway. Workaround was to turn the monitor
on, before starting the PC.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1799613] Re: In kernel 4.14.59, monitor resolution is detected correctly. In kernels after that, they are not detected correctly.

2018-10-25 Thread Erik Granger
I think that fixed it.

To add `amdgpu.dc=0`, you must edit your grub configuration

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029517/amd-rx480-screen-flicker-after-
update-to-18-04#1032198

>To do this, edit the file /etc/default/grub, for example using

>sudoedit /etc/default/grub
>Find the line beginning GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and add the text
>amdgpu.dc=0 between the double quotes (""). Leave any other parameters as they
>are. For example, you may end up with a line like this:

>GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash amdgpu.dc=0"
>Save the file and exit, and then run

>sudo update-grub
>to write the configuration, and reboot.

After doing this, the resolution is detected correctly and appears
normal in the 4.15.0-38-generic kernel.

2018-07-04 Thread Erik Karlsson
I got the patch working in 4.9.6. But in 4.17.3 the backlight controls
no longer work after suspend.

Wierdly though, the "nvapeek" output is the same after suspend as before:
# nvapeek 0xe100; nvapeek 0xe28c; nvapeek 0xe104 8; nvapeek 0xe280 8
e100: 001c1100
e28c: 0180

e280: 2747
...suspend...
# nvapeek 0xe100; nvapeek 0xe28c; nvapeek 0xe104 8; nvapeek 0xe280 8
e100: 001c1100
e28c: 0180
e104: 72266240 0441474b
e280: 2747

Something else has changed. Will bisect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1756053] [NEW] Thrown out of session into login screen with "inactivity" warning

2018-03-15 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to the 18.04 beta yesterday, which fixed all my problems with
hibernation on my DELL XPS 9350. Most other things have been fine until
ten minutes ago, when I was without warning thrown out (forcibly logged
out) of my Gnome session.

I was typing away on my keyboard in WebStorm when suddenly the screen
went blank and I was back at the GDM login screen. There was a brief
warning on screen about the system going into hibernation (or
standby/suspend - don't remember). When I logged in again, it was a
fresh new session, so all previously existing windows had been closed,
which meant I lost work.

I am not sure where to go about debugging this and providing more
information. `dmesg` seemed pretty normal.

I experienced something somewhat similar on 17.10, where I upon logging
in would create _an additional session_ (I could still see the old
processes in the process list), but this seems to be something
different.

2018-01-15 Thread Erik Hearne
This also affects me.
Fresh install of Ubuntu Mate 16.04.3

AMD FX 8350
GeForce GTX 750TI (using the included nouveau drivers)
2Tb Seagate HDD
16Gb Corsair DDR3

I cannot post anything as it fails after grub and goes to BusyBox.
But I can run dmesg and cannot see anything unusual.

Not sure if this is related but, this is after install failed 3 times on
USB, finally had to install via disk and install without wifi to make it
work. The install would freeze and static would come out the speakers.
That also happened the first time I rebooted and now when I reboot this
error occurs.

seems to break some other unrelated system-dependencies)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1590677] Re: xterm unity launcher icon does not allow opening additional windows

2016-06-10 Thread Erik Auerswald
I can add the needed functionality by placing creating
~/.local/share/applications/xterm.desktop based on
/usr/share/applications/debian-xterm.desktop with the addition of a
"New" action.

There is one glitch: when opening the second xterm, Unity changes the
mouse pointer to indicate activity. I think XTerm does not send the
Unity (or GNOME?) specific message that it has started, thus this
activity indication is active until a timeout expires. Adding
"StartupNotify=false" to the [Desktop Action New] section does not fix
this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1590677] Re: xterm unity launcher icon does not allow opening additional windows

2016-06-10 Thread Erik Auerswald
Thanks for the reply!

I have not checked how this works in Unity. I would have thought that
this is a Ubuntu resp. Unity issue, because it needs some magic to open
a second window via the launcher.

Looking at /usr/share/applications/gnome-terminal.desktop, the [Desktop
Action New] section seems to be used for this functionality. I'll look
into this.

Thanks,
Erik

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1590677] [NEW] xterm unity launcher icon does not allow opening additional windows

2016-06-09 Thread Erik Auerswald
Public bug reported:

The launcher icon for xterm in unity on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS does not
provide a way to open additional XTerms (e.g. the gnome-terminal
launcher icon does). Thus it is not possible to open more than one XTerm
window using just the unity launcher.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1585884] [NEW] xrandr unable to activate displays after docking

2016-05-25 Thread Erik Forsberg
Public bug reported:

I use a Dell Latitude E7440 with an "Dell EURO2 Advanced E-Port II
Docking" docking station.

When docking the laptop into the station, it's impossible to enable the
two screens I have attached to the DVI outputs of the docking station. I
use autorandr, and it reports this:

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig)
Serial number of failed request: 48
Current serial number in output stream: 48
Failed to apply profile 'dock-with-benq' (line 610):
Command failed: xrandr --output DP1-1 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200
--panning 0x0 --pos 0x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal --output
DP1-2 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 1920x0 --rate
59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal (line 610)
This appears to be a bug. Please help improving autorandr by reporting it
upstream.
Please attach the output of `xrandr --verbose` to your bug report if
appropriate.

I'm reporting this as a bug on xserver-xorg-video-intel since the xrandr
command works after reboot, so it's not related to autorandr (which is
just a wrapper around xrandr).

Attaching output of xrandr --verbose

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help identifying the
problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-04-29 Thread Erik Brangs
I suspect that this might be DPMS related. When I use xscreensaver with
screen blanking but no DPMS, the problem doesn't seem to occur. When I
use xscreensaver with DPMS and standby (setting suspend and off to high
values so they don't get triggered), freezes occur when trying to use
the computer again after the screen has been blank for some time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-04-06 Thread Erik Brangs
I just had a freeze using 4.0.3 so it's likely that the chance of
occurrence is just too low for me to properly bisect this if it truly is
a kernel problem. If someone knows whether this could be a kernel
problem or if it's likely to be something else, I would appreciate the
information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-15 Thread Erik Brangs
** Description changed:

- I've looked at the page at
- https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze and can reproduce the
- bug at will by entering the command
+ I've got Xorg freezes from time to time. Previously, I was able to
+ reproduce it with

  sleep 1; xset s activate

- that's mentioned on the page. The freeze occurs when the screen content
- reappears after moving the cursor. Cursor is still movable but clicking
- has no effect.
+ as described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze .
+ That's no longer possible.
+
+ However, freezes happen from time to time when I try to use the computer
+ after the screen has been deactivated.
+
+ I suspect it's a kernel problem because changing the kernel makes a
difference:
+ - on some kernels it doesn't seem to occur at all (e.g. 4.0.3 from
mainline-crack) or the frequency is just so low that I haven't seen it yet
+ - on newer kernels (e.g. 4.5 rc* and later, including the 4.5 release), the
system restores the screen but Xorg freezes up almost instantly afterwards
+ - on some kernels, the system doesn't properly restore the screen, there's a
pattern with stripes or a single color (e.g. 4.0.4 from mainline-crack)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-15 Thread Erik Brangs
I'm still bisecting, it's probably either
- fcfb5aa246c80df8b0a2ccadd7284b4c189149b0 (
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack/commit/?id=fcfb5aa246c80df8b0a2ccadd7284b4c189149b0
 )
or
- 09af0842dac496aae363719c449cb88dcc953299 (
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack/commit/?id=09af0842dac496aae363719c449cb88dcc953299
 )

from the mainline-crack repository ( https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack ) . AFAIK my Lenovo
T60 doesn't have an i915 chipset so it's probably the vblank commit.

The latest released kernel, 4.5 ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.5-wily/ ) still has freezes for me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-11 Thread Erik Brangs
I'm in the process of bisecting.

The latest kernel ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc7-wily/ ) is affected by a freeze, too. I'm not sure
if it's the same as the one that I'm seeing in the 4.0.x series: On the
latest kernel, the system simply freezes after trying to use it after
the screen has blanked out. The original screen content is properly
restored. In the 4.0.x series freeze, the the screen content shows a
single color or a stripe pattern when the freeze happens.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-03 Thread Erik Brangs
X windows still freezes when I haven't used it for some time.

I can't reproduce it by entering a command but the freeze still happens.

The kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.0.4-wily/ definitively has the problem. The latest
kernel ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/ )
is also affected. I'm currently using http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.0.3-wily/ which seems to be fine for now. If the kernel
turns out to be good, I'll try to narrow the problem down by bisecting.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-02-02 Thread Erik Brangs
I've upgraded the BIOS to version 2.27 rev 2 from 2011 and upgraded the
kernel.

The problem still occurs with 4.2.0-27-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 22
04:49:08 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.

I also tested 3.19.0-43 again and wasn't able to reproduce the problem
with "sleep 1; xset s activate". So it's likely that 3.19.0-43 doesn't
have the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1538741] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2016-01-27 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

I've looked at the page at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze and can reproduce the
bug at will by entering the command

sleep 1; xset s activate

that's mentioned on the page. The freeze occurs when the screen content
reappears after moving the cursor. Cursor is still movable but clicking
has no effect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1308105] Re: Xfce resets TV mode to NULL when power cycled

2015-08-07 Thread Erik Hovland
Adding my me too. I have a ECS Liva X with an intel graphics chip. When
I turn off my Samsung TV the screen goes away. I added the suggestion
above (killall xsettingsd) to the /etc/mythtv/session-settings and was
able to confirm that it does workaround the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1272338] Re: Xorg memory leak on trusty

2015-03-16 Thread Erik Walthinsen
Experiencing this on Xubuntu 14.10 with the ATI proprietary driver with
Radeon 270X 2GB. Right now the X server is over 6GB:

root 3444 10.6 44.3 6303840 5457648 tty7 Ss+ Mar14 238:46
/usr/bin/X -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten
tcp vt7 -novtswitch

Running Firefox, Thunderbird, plenty of terminals, and things like
Cadsoft Eagle (5.12), Saleae Logic (1.1.18), LibreOffice, Evince, etc.
Killed *ALL* of them and practically no change in X usage.

2015-02-23 Thread Erik Karlsson
Created attachment 113754
drm/nv50: Fix backlight not working when PWM_DIV is uninitialised (v4)

I redid the patch for 3.18.6. Not sure what the use of removed
nvif_rd32() chunk was, but it doesn't seem to be necessary anymore.

Could this fix be predicated on the specific PCI ID if the effects are
uncertain?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1407991] Re: Xorg freeze

2015-01-08 Thread Erik Brangs
It seems that this was a configuration problem that did not have any
effect on earlier versions of Ubuntu. It disappeared after reinstalling
GRUB2. It seems that the additional parameter "text" in the kernel
arguments (see the line for "ProcKernelCmdLine" above) caused this
problem on my system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1407991] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2015-01-06 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu 14.10, the system seems to
hang during boot.

I see the following screens:
1. GRUB boot menu
2. blank screen
3. a screen with output. This disappears quite fast so I was only able to read
the first line which is "Restoring resolver state..." or something similar.
4. another screen with output. The last line of the output is "Starting
upowerd...done." . After that, the system seems to hang.

However, I'm still able to switch to another terminal via Alt+F2 and
login there. If I use startx from there, a graphical environment starts.
I'm not sure which one it is, but it does not seem to be XFCE which I'm
normally using (I've configured XFCE to use a dark desktop theme: grey
font on black background). This environment only has a background and
some desktop icons. There is nothing else present, e.g. there are no
bars.

2013-10-07 Thread Erik
i915 Gallium driver on an Atom N270.

-Opening the dash, shut down window, etc. is much faster.

-The overall performance of this driver is much slower. Even fade
effects on context menus cause stuttering. This is not improved by
setting MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=1.4.

-Some visual effects don't seem to work correctly. For example the
background on the dash is not blurred or transparent. It is a solid
color with a gradient.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1208819] [NEW] Terminal shows printouts "radeon: Acquired access to AA optimizations." and "radeon: Released access to AA optimizations." during normal operation

2013-08-06 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

When doing normal work in a terminal (xfce4-terminal 0.6.1) on Xubuntu
13.04, sometimes the following message is shown: "radeon: Acquired
access to AA optimizations." A short time later, another message will be
shown: "radeon: Acquired access to AA optimizations."

I don't recall seeing those kinds of messages before and I don't think
that they belong in a normal terminal.

I installed updates today (including a graphics driver update) and I
suspect that the messages are related to that. They might also be
related to the upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 (from 12.10) that I recently did.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1120245] Re: A program is still running: Unknown Not responding.

2013-08-02 Thread Per-Erik Stavrén
Yes I've done some "experimental work"...I'm running Windows Xp and Ubuntu
on the machine but I guess this should not cause any problem. And yes I've
tried to setup Ubuntu to run Windows applications from Ubuntu but failed
several times.

It doesn't matter if I close all applications or, not the msgbox is always
there.

So you see it's my own lack of knowledge that is causing the problem.

I guess the easiest way, even if it doesn't solve the root cause, is to
reinstall a new Ubuntu package. Yes I will backup important contents first.

I think you can close this issue.

Thanks for your great support and dedication!

All the best!

Per-Erik

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1120245] Re: Problem with system software

2013-07-31 Thread Per-Erik Stavrén
Hi Alan,

Msg always occur after shutdown button has been pressed.

"A program is still running: Unknown Not responding. Waiting for the
program to finish. Interupting the program may cause you to lose work"
Available buttons, Lock Screen, Cancel and Shut down anyway. By pressing
Shut down anyway the computer shuts down.

Only annoying...

I'm a Linux beginner.

Thanks in advance,

Per-Erik

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068341] Re: No way to specify correct dependencies for dkms packages (nvidia driver install fails to get matching header)

2012-12-02 Thread Stein Erik Svendheim
Personally, I have no issues doing some CLI work, but for the average
user, this is a major deal breaker. The fact that this stupid bug still
haven't been fixed is an embarrasment for anyone who advocates Linux
desktop systems.

Not a single person who is considering using Ubuntu is going to get a
new computer with AMD/Intel graphics, just because Ubuntu can't install
the drivers right.

Can you show us the output of:

cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method

and:

cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

I don't think that this is a real bug.

just tried

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 894600] [NEW] Xorg freeze with neauvou

2011-11-24 Thread Erik B. Andersen
Public bug reported:

The facts:
Xorg freezes.
No display corruption
Mouse moves but does not change like it should (for example when over text).
Alt+SysRQ+R, then Alt+SysRQ+K kills X and lets me log in again.
Happens only with Unity, not unaccelerated environments.
Using Neauvou driver on 11.10.
Wasn't a problem on Maverick.
Animations that should be smooth are jittery like showing the unity bar or
searching in Unity.

Not so sure, but think is true:
Seems to freeze with lots of text changes, especially in a terminal. Like
holding down backspace, moving cursor fast in nano. Or searching in Unity dash.
Also, dragging windows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782855] Re: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering

2011-11-12 Thread Erik Wool
Ha! Sure enough, the quickest way to get a bug to manifest is to deny
its existence. It is NOT fixed globally in Oneiric. I made 2 useage
changes in the past few weeks that contributed to my not noticing any
flaws: 1) switched primary browser from Firefox to Chrome, and 2)
switched terminator shell's font from "Monospace 8pt" to "Ubuntu Mono
8pt". I just changed the terminator font back a day or two ago and yep,
it's wrecked again.

Observations:

- bug manifests in terminator shell with "Monospace 8pt" font, but not
with "Ubuntu Mono" at any size. After changing font sizes and faces for
a while, the bug is completely gone from the font chooser, and does not
appear in the shell after closing prefs --- but, after switching to
another app for a while the font is once again damaged in a novel way.
This happens with "Monospace" only, as far as I can see.

- bug does not manifest in Chrome 14.0.835.186 at all. (see zooming note
below)

- bug manifests in Firefox 7.0.1 -- nb. compared same page [
http://getfirebug.com/firstrun#Firebug%201.8.4] in both firefox and
chrome.

- bug manifests in Thunderbird 7.0.1 in html emails, but NOT in message
lists, menus, etc.

- browser view zooming causes what? font re-rendering? In Firefox,
zooming in and out repeatedly with ctl+, ctl- caused the bug to appear
*almost* at random. Sometimes the fonts were damaged in the same way,
but after a few passes the damage changed location, moving from letter
to letter and line to line. No *pattern* of change was observed, per
se. The same actions in Chrome did not provoke any damaged fonts to
appear, even using the same page as with Firefox.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782855] Re: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering

2011-11-11 Thread Erik Wool
I had the symptoms described above with Natty running on a Panasonic
Toughbook W4 with the display goodies below (from lspci) :

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML
Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express
Graphics Controller (rev 03)

After the Oneiric upgrade, I could've sworn I saw it happen again once
or twice, but if I did, it's totally cleared up now -- not a line
missing for over a week -- and yes, I've been deliberately trying to
provoke it by switching up fonts in applications, changing sizes,
visiting "99 more annoying fonts", etc.

So I'd say the bug is gone.

btw I notice that I'm currently using a kernel module labelled i915, and
I believe Natty's autoselected kernel module was labelled i815. Could
be wrong about that, but maybe this is relevant?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-10-30 Thread Erik Zoltan
I'm attaching a screenshot taken with a digital camera since it's hard
to get a picture of this one. This shows the problems I'm having on a
fresh install with gnome shell and all packages up to date out of the
default repositories. One is the font problems in the gnome shell menu,
and the other is the diagonal effect on dialogs and pulldown menus. It
certainly makes for an interesting computing experience ;).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 874819] [NEW] Xorg doesn't dectect 1600x1200 resolution for VGA-1

2011-10-14 Thread Erik B. Andersen
Public bug reported:

Xorg didn't detect that my screen could do 1600x1200. I have to set it
each time I log in with "xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1600x1200" and then use
the display configuration tool to use the larger resolution.

(Hopefully apport gives you the info you need to know. I don't know what
else you need to know, but I'm willing to get more information if you
need it).
