[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04
Followed instructions from #67. Running 'cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_driver' to check for frequency scaling driver shows 'acpi-cpufreq' instead of 'intel_pstate', even *before* adding 'intel_pstate=disable' to /etc/default/grub. After adding 'intel_pstate=disable' to /etc/default/grub and rebooting, 'cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_driver' shows 'acpi- cpufreq' as frequency scaling driver, too. In my case, using kernel 4.15.0-45-generic, 'intel_pstate' frequency scaling driver has never been shown as active, yet the processor overheating continues. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04
I'll leave my hardware specs here, it could help pinning down the problem cause. I'm using NVidia driver 340.107. The overheating occurs under kernel 4.15, both in 16.04 and 18.04, *but* 18.04 runs about 8°C - 10°C hotter. Kernel 4.18 runs just as hot in 18.04. ** Attachment added: "lshw-ThinkPad-T410s.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1768976/+attachment/5230584/+files/lshw-ThinkPad-T410s.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1768976 Title: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1768976/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Same problem here: Lenovo ThinkPad T410s Intel i5 (1st gen, 2.53Ghz) NVidia NVS3100M graphics Kernel 4.4 in 16.04 idles at 35°C - 37°C (fresh, high-quality thermal paste applied a week ago). Kernel 4.15 in 18.04 idles at 48°C - 52°C. Only Dropbox and Megasync in the background; htop shows very low CPU use from these 2 apps. Overall system CPU usage (idle) doesn't go above 1.3% - 2% range. Same workflow from 16.04 + kernel 4.4 runs 20°C hotter in 18.04 + kernel 4.15. Regular operation with Chromium and Emacs drives temperature to 76°C - 80°C. Critical temperature is 95°C before shutdown. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1646140] [NEW] Radeon Xpress 200M - performance regression in video playback with Wily stack (Vivid is last working stack)
Public bug reported: After updating the Ubuntu HWE stack in 14.04 to Wily (kernel 4.2 and xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-wily), system boots up fine, but screen is laggy; although DRI3 is now enabled (according to Xorg.0.log), 2D acceleration seems to be gone. System is an older Pentium laptop (Packard Bell EasyNote) with a Radeon Xpress 200M chip (r300 driver). Video acceleration was working with DRI2 under the Vivid stack (kernel 3.19-64-lowlatency + xserver-xorg-video- radeon-lts-vivid). I'm using a 14.04 LTS-based distro, ElementaryOS, with vanilla Ubuntu HWE stacks. (Testing with Oibaf's PPA or Xorg-edgers repo did not solve the problem either, so I purged the PPAs and reverted to official Ubuntu sources) We already bisected and tested Xorg versions with the package maintainers, and could not determine a consistent culprit, so the suggestion is that perhaps a newer Mesa version after Vivid is impairing video acceleration in 2D content display. Which Mesa package could be showing a regression, I do not know how to assess, so I'm eager for your input. Tested ~trusty2.5, no changes observed compared to ~trusty2.4. Tearing in fullscreen web videos (YouTube, Vimeo) persists, windowed mode runs a tad better, local video playback in VLC and Kodi improved (no tearing/hiccups, but a periodic lag that can be compared to time- shifting about every 4 seconds), but doesn't run as smoothly as the 7.5.0-1 radeon driver yet. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1610591 Title: Video acceleration regression for Radeon Xpress 200M (r300) in xorg- lts-xenial & xorg-lts-wily To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/1610591/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Tested; Chromium allows proper fullscreen again, gtk system GUI is still responsive, but video tearing isn't going away; for a couple of seconds it recedes slightly, but then comes back, both in windowed mode and fullscreen. As for VLC and Kodi, there's no really noticeable tearing now, but the framerate drops intermittently every 3 seconds, in average, like a hiccup. System GUI (GTK) doesn't seem laggy, but web video playback still shows a lot of tearing (Chromium, windowed or fullscreen). Something odd happened in Chromium web video playback: it doesn't go fullscreen properly when using this driver (looks like windowed-mode fullscreen). When reverting to the 7.5 driver, video playback in Chromium does proper, actual fullscreen with constant, fluid framerate. ** Attachment added: "Windowed-mode "fullscreen" in Chromium when using 7.7 test driver" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1610591/+attachment/4735557/+files/Captura%20de%20pantalla%20de%202016-09-06%2012%3A09%3A19.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1610591 Title: Video acceleration regression for Radeon Xpress 200M (r300) in xorg- lts-xenial & xorg-lts-wily To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/1610591/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Tested; fullscreen YouTube playback *somewhat* improved by a notch, but it takes about 5 seconds to begin playing smoothly at 360p. When going back to windowed/embedded playback, framerate plummets. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1610591] Re: Video acceleration regression for Radeon Xpress 200M (r300) in xorg-lts-xenial & xorg-lts-wily
Sorry man, I was just looking for extra help. Yes, I don't have enough space, there's less than 1 Gb free (about which the system constantly warns), I have no external drive to dd my home partition (I've been awfully broke for 2 years), and I can't delete stuff yet until I'm done with some projects on this machine (rendering & plotting). I'm pretty much screwed in terms of testing infrastructure now; a couple of years ago, I could have built kernels daily. Again, sorry for the inconvenience. I tried stock 16.04, and upstream xorg; no improvement. What I've identified is: any xorg version that supports DRI3 shows a performance regression even if only DRI2 is active. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1610591] Re: Video acceleration regression for Radeon Xpress 200M (r300) in xorg-lts-xenial & xorg-lts-wily
I've just upgraded the kernel to 4.4.0-34-lowlatency by installing the linux-image-lowlatency-lts-xenial package. Video acceleration works just fine combined with the xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-vivid (DRI2). Problems begin when using xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-wily or xserver- xorg-video-radeon-lts-xenial. Tearing ensues, regardless of the presence of a xorg.conf config file to enable/disable options to improve framerate. Public bug reported: After updating the Ubuntu HWE stack in 14.04 to Xenial (kernel 4.4 and xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-xenial), system boots up fine and responsively, but screen is laggy; there is a tremendous performance regression in comparison to xorg-lts-vivid. Lots of video tearing that did not occur when using xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-vivid. System is an older Pentium laptop (Packard Bell EasyNote) with a Radeon Xpress 200M chip (r300 driver). Video acceleration was working with DRI2 under the Vivid stack (kernel 3.19-64-lowlatency + xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-vivid). I also tried upgrading to the Wily kernel (4.2.0-lowlatency), and video acceleration works fine with the Vivid xorg. Public bug reported: Performance regression and no DRI3 acceleration in xserver-xorg-video- radeon-lts-wily, unless one specifies Option "DRI3" "1" in xorg.conf. Then, performance is *even worse*, in comparison to xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-vivid: Desktop is laggy, video playback is choppy, tearing occurs. Package is official Ubuntu 14.04. I've been sticking to the -lts-vivid stack for stability, but when upgrading to the -lts-wily stack for kernel 4.2, while the system runs a bit smoother, video performance is severely affected. System is a dual-core x86 Pentium laptop, 2Gb RAM. This report was previously dismissed ad invalid. I'm reporting it again, as it is not. (Testing with Oibaf's PPA or Xorg-edgers repo did not solve the problem either, so I purged the PPAs and reverted to official Ubuntu sources) Here's Xorg.0.log: (with /etc/X11/xorg.conf; removing it did not solve the problem) 39.964] X.Org X Server 1.17.2 Release Date: 2015-06-16 [39.964] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [39.964] Build Operating System: Linux 3.19.0-43-generic i686 Ubuntu [39.964] Current Operating System: Linux EasyNote 4.2.0-41-lowlatency #48~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Fri Jun 24 18:29:28 UTC 2016 i686 [39.964] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.2.0-41-lowlatency root=UUID=1ab2e24a-a209-4061-8dae-a11a19a5059f ro quiet splash [39.964] Build Date: 15 January 2016 10:17:41PM [39.964] xorg-server 2:1.17.2-1ubuntu9.1~trusty1 (For technical support please see http://www.ubuntu.com/support) [39.964] Current version of pixman: 0.30.2 [39.964]Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version.
