[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip

2016-04-08 Thread jerrylamos
A couple weeks ago I did a fresh install of ubuntu-14.04.desktop.iso LTS
and the garbled text bug 1507255 was back. Usual fix of

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

worked.

Xenial new installs have been fine lately. Putting that uxa fix in
Xenial prevents X windows from running.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip

2016-03-20 Thread jerrylamos
Starting in November 2014 Ubuntu X windows screwed up with
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 03)
making Wallpaper badly hashed.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1507255
Then a couple months later even Ubuntu text badly garbled, illegible.
Workarond was:

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

So in every install since Nov. 2014 I've been making that change.
As of March 2016, that change screws up X windows and can't get desktop.

Voila, not needed, Xwindows now running fine. That took Ubuntu a year and a
half to fix.
Wonder how long ubuntu Xwindows will stay fixted

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip

2016-03-04 Thread jerrylamos
Not fixed in 14.04.4 LTS. 14.04 originally did not have this garbled
problem, but a fresh install of 14.04 does.

Should I enter a new bug against 14.04 LTS since this Xenial bug is
fixed? 14.04 is supposed to be supported until 2019 I think.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2016-01-31 Thread jerrylamos
I tested
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

Wallpaper badly garbled.

Images from ubuntu O.K., but any text sent by ubuntu badly garbled
unreadable.

Fix in comment #41 works fine.

Do note, 14.04 LTS had been running fine until 1/29 update screwed up network,
so I
re-installed 14.04
Surprise, 14.04 now garbled too. Fix in comment #41 worked fine.

It's a bit of a struggle. Booting the .iso text from ubuntu unreadable.
I've done enough installs to guess what the choices are.

Re-boot after install complete, text from ubuntu badly garbled, I have
to muddle around to find the fix #41 and reboot. Now fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip

2015-11-15 Thread jerrylamos
My comments on entry #13:
gedit 20-intel.conf
Copy in the lines starting with Section and ending with EndSection:
[code]
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection
[/code]
save
quit
sudo cp 20-intel.conf /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
enter your password

Check to see if the entry made it into the directory O.K.:
cat /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Now /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is read once on boot so you have to reboot for
it to take effect.
What this configuration does is tell X11 to use the method "uxa" an older
section of code, since on this pc the newer code "sna" screws up.

If this configuration doesn't work for you, then delete the
20-intel.conf entry in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d

Now Xenial and Wily install .iso's are a real bear to read on this Lenovo M58p
because of the garbled text. On finish of install, before I do a reboot, I use
the install ubunto to make the conf.d entry into the target ubuntu install.
That's a bit tricky.
Let us know how you do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1509740] Re: Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors

This bug persisted for two weeks.
Installed and updated Xenial problem no longer occurs.
Much safer for me to update Ubuntu rather than risk a bios update - a failed
bios update turns the pc into junk.

Thanks for looking at the bug.

2015-10-29 Thread jerrylamos
How do I tell if this Lenovo M58p has the Intel GMA4500 chip?
Wily gives me fits with hashing. Can't read text even.
Xenial slightly better. Text sent out by Ubuntu is totally hashed. Text I
type in on the terminal window is readable. Wallpaper and images are hashed
unintelligible.

Current workaround, this is Xenial with 3.17.8031708 installed from Ubuntu

Wallpaper badly hashed. Files > Pictures > select jpg displays just
fine.

Some screen text displayed fine, other text hashed such as top line
Close Min Max

Files > Home badly hashed, select Screenshot and displays fine even
after closing Screenshot.

Typing in some text unreadable hash, mouse click outside the window
text now readable.

Wily kernel must be using different X calls.

Best solution is Trusty Tahr linux image on top of Wily.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-09-21 Thread jerrylamos
Shotwell display badly hashed.

Image Viewer display just fine.

Both on the screen at the same time in the attached screenshot.

How do I get the display routine used by Image Viewer to be used by
Shotwell and Lightdm?

Note, part of screen behind the images shows badly hashed unreadable
desktop.

I update most days, verify bad screen display, then reboot Wily using
the Utopic kernel and all is fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-09-12 Thread jerrylamos
Comment #36, this is a desk top so the display is hooked to the VGA
port. I think there's only one display port on this Lenovo M58p.

Interesting, boot with Wily kernel,
Background Wallpaper hashed
Settings Appearance Wallpapers thumbnails hashed
Files Pictures displays same jpg fine
command line Gsettings fails screen all brown does not display the desired jpg
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg'

Reboot with Utopic kernel
Background Wallpaper still hashed
Settings Appearance Wallpapers thumbnails fine
Wallpaper displays just like Files Pictures
gsettings still fails: brown screen instead of the desired jpg
with Utopic kernel,
Settings Appearance Wallpaper works fine.

How come with Wily kernel Files Pictures jpg's display fine but Settings
Appearance Wallpapers is hashed?

What's the difference in the code to display with Files vs. Settings Appearance?
Even in Settings Appearance, the little monitor picture is O.K. but the
thumbnails are all hashed?

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-09-10 Thread jerrylamos
Wily getting worse and worse.

Much screen text hashed unreadable. A couple weeks ago it was just
Wallpaper.

Do note, Files Pictures select jpg displays jpg just fine. Settings
Appearance all hashed.

See attached screenshot.

Do note with hashed unreadable text as in gedit, selecting screenshot
may clear up the text, after screenshot unreadable again.

Status says "Incomplete" What would you like?

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-09-10 Thread jerrylamos
Kernel:

linux-image-3.17.0-031700-generic_3.17.0-031700.201410060605_amd64.deb

works fine installed into Wily.
I think it's one of the last Utopic kernels

So my drill is, update or install latest Wily, verify screen display is
all screwed up,

Then install a kernel that will work.

I'm not a developer so I've got no way to find what changed (lots!) that
would affect screen display.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-09-10 Thread jerrylamos
Thanks for looking at the bug.

I switch between Mily looking for bugs, and LTS when I can't get
something done with Mily because I can't read the screen.

I might try another kernel from kernel-ppa/mainline.

I don't know how to downlevel X to say, whatever it was in November 2014
when everything was fine.

Very strange when Mily Files can display a jpg just fine, then Desktop
and Terminal get it all screwed up. Must use different routines.

I have run other flavors. I come back to Unity when I can. I'm used to
how to get things done with Unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-09-09 Thread jerrylamos
Update complete Wily as of display.

Appearances Background all pictures horizontally hashed, both the ubuntu
supplied ones and my jpg's.

Wallpaper horribly hashed and will not recover even with multiple
wallpaper settings. which used to clear things up until the changes of
last week.

Files Picture viewer looks just fine.

Not only the wallpaper, but the text windows hashed unreadable.

Worst yet.

Earlier Wily much better, 14.04 LTS perfect.

2015-09-02 Thread jerrylamos
Opened a bug for gsettings failure described in comment #26:

gsettings fails to set wallpaper 1490543

Gsettings fails on both the Lenovo M58p with the hashing problem
Gsettings also fails on Acer 5253 laptop which does not have the hashing problem

In both pc's Settings Appearance Wallpapers Pictures folder works, but
on the Lenovo may have to be repeated several times.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1484226] [NEW] Wily after log in wallpaper hashed

2015-08-12 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

As of .iso daily live fresh install yesterday,

Boots to correct wallpaper.

Log in, screen flashes must be some kind of xorg reset, and then
wallpaper hashed.

gsettings no longer works:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg'

Doesn't do anything. Used to reset wallpaper.

Have to go to System Settings Appearance Wallpapers Picture Folder
select the jpg and it works. May have to do it a couple times.

Why is wallpaper just fine on boot, then after log in gets screwed up?

Thanks for any ideas.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-06-29 Thread jerrylamos
Wily O.K. for a couple weeks and I had my hpes up. Then got dread update:
xserver intel update

Now wallpeper usually boots horizontally striped hashed, sometimes boots
wallpaper O.K.

I don't know how to down level xserver intel?

Wallpaper can be fixed by alternately doing the following once or twice
or three times ...:

#!/bin/bash
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg'
exit 0

alternately with

#!/bin/bash
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island2.jpg'
exit 0

same jpg with two different names.

Other jpg's fail similarly including default wallpapers.

Note, similar to bug #1406802

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri

What all does gsettings use? Likely xserver

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-05-19 Thread jerrylamos
Bios update is in 1404247 - if it screws up I've got a dead computer.

1410 and before run just fine.

November and before 1504 ran fine. Win7 just fine. (Well, pretty slow
it's Microsoft)

1504 December and on to now pretty bad. I have to set wallpaper
multiple times.

At the moment, Wily much improved - maybe half the time boots to good
wallpaper just fine, the other half needs one set wallpaper.

Seems to be sensitive to xserver. Any way to try 1410 level of xserver
in 1510?

Thanks, Jerry

How do I tell if the bug fix is in Wily? If so, it doesn't work. If

I looked at the Lenovo support site.
The BIOS upgrade is for Win7 64 so I'll have to boot that ( if Ubuntu Grub

work.
Of course if a BIOS update fails I've got a dead computer.

2015-03-08 Thread jerrylamos
Comment #11 found earlier vivid wallpaper works fine. (as does 14.10, 14.04,
...)
Nov. 10 vivid .iso fresh install on another partition.
Boots with wallpaper O.K. every time.

Vivid as of mid December updated/installed wallpaper screwed up on every boot.
This is a vivid apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade as of early March.
Wallpaper still screwed up on every boot.
Files Pictures Select jpg set as wallpaper
has to be done maybe twice and then wallpaper O.K.
Kernel 4-RC2 or 3.19-7 no difference, wallpaper screws up on boot, then set
wallpaper a couple times to get good wallpaper.

Both the older good vivid and the latest vivid are installed in separate
partitions.

Any way to tell what packages are involved in set wallpaper and how to
tell what changed?

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-02-23 Thread jerrylamos
Testing vervid I do updates most days and installs every couple weeks.
Typically there are a whole pile of packages (!) so us users don't install
package by package so we can't tell which caused the trouble.
I reported the bug on Dec. 19 and the bug persists on every update and every
couple weeks a new .iso install still has the bug example this one zsync'd a
couple days ago.

Now of course 14.04 and 14.10 and earlier 15.04's do not have the bug.
Neither does Win7.

The closest I can get to the bug is:
Boot
Wallpaper hashed. Drop down windows O.K.
File Pictures right click on desired jpg - I've tried a number, both mine
and the ubuntu wallpapers
Set as Wallpaper
After one or two or three tries the wallpaper is correct, no hash.

What packages are involved in Set as Wallpaper?

Thanks for looking at this bug.

I run ubuntu vivid 64 on this Lenovo M58p. I haven't tried ubuntu vivid
32.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed

2015-01-04 Thread jerrylamos
Jan 4 vivid 64 .iso still same problem, wallpaper vertical bars and
hashed.

Rebooted latest update vivid.

Monitor is 1920x1080., vertical bar background. Internet windows and
terminal windows fine.

Tried 1360x768. Wallpaper Vertical bars.

Tried 1280x720. Vertical bars.

Tried 1024x768. Wallpaper O.K. but figure is stretched horizontally,
i.e. fat because resolution geometry 4:3 doesn't fit screen 16:9.

Switched back to 1360x768, Wallpaper now O.K. ???

Conclusion, something screwed up in the calculations for varying
resolution from 1920x768 (tiny print) to legible 1360x768. Only
calculation that's reliable is 1024x768, which is 4:3 does not look good
on this 16:9 screen besides being too coarse.

What code does the calculations for choice of pixels for varying
resolutions? lightdm? Xorg? Unity?

Sure would help if Bug #1405867 were fixed so that selecting different
wallpapers actually changed the wallpaper instead of having to reboot to
get different wallpaper.

Appreciate any thoughts on this situation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware

2014-08-27 Thread jerrylamos
Maybe the problem description is invalid, however the problem is
very real.

See also ttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1359299,
confirmed, multiple users report problem.

Utopic amd64 does not work on Lenovo ThinkCentre. Intel Core 2 duo 3.0
gHz 4 mb.

Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev
03)

Just did an install here today, using the last 3.16.0-6 iso I have
saved. Installed, compiz unity running.

Updated to latest amd64 .iso, 26 August, which includes the 3.16.0-10
kernel.

3.16.0-10 kernel, boots to wallpaper. No compiz hence no unity.

Reboot selecting 3.16.0-6 out of /boot, compiz and unity running.

Whatever is wrong, it's in the ubuntu kernel. Everything else is the
same.

BTW, i386 32 bit 3.16.0-10 compiz and unity run. And of course Lubuntu
amd64 running fine, no compiz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware

2014-08-25 Thread jerrylamos
I get a similar compiz error on amd64. In my case, booting 3.16.0.6
kernels or before work fine.

Booting amd64 3.16.0-7, -8, -9, -10 kernels on the same install the
desktop runs but compiz hence unity do not.

Booting the newer .iso the live session fails the same way. Follow
through with the install and of course compiz etc. fail.

booting the 3.16.0-6 amd64 .iso runs fine.

I don't know if it is the same install are the different kernels chosen
out of /boot using the same Intel video driver?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1359299

Do note, i386 32 bit 3.16.0-10 install and kernel on the same pc run
fine (for a development version).

How different is the 32 bit and the 64 bit compiz?

Of course, amd64 Lubuntu runs fine. Lubuntu doesn't use compiz I think.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: unity, (compiz) fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1

2014-08-22 Thread jerrylamos
3.16.0-9 i386 32 bit boots normally. Very rarely boots to desktop and
cursor no unity.

3.16.0-9 amd64 always boots to desktop no unity. X is up, compiz hence
unity are not.

3.16..0-8 rarely boots to unity, usually to desktop and cursor only.

Viewing utopic as a black box, characteristics are that compiz is trying
to start before X is ready, usually on amd64 and rarely on i386.

Are both amf64 and i386 using the same Intel video driver?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: unity, (compiz) fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1

2014-08-17 Thread jerrylamos
This utopic install was initially linux image 3.16.0-5.

Updated to -7 compiz and unity fail, X11 running fine to desktop no
panels.

Updated to -8 first boot from dead cold overnight boots O.K. Reboots
compiz and unity fail.

Externally acts like a race condition that works sometimes other times
not.

Updated to -9 First boot from dead cold overnight booted O.K. Reboot
compiz and unity fail.

How come same utopic selecting linux-image -5 works every time selecting
linux image -8 or -9 do not?

Recent .iso boots fail every time because there's no linux-image -5 to
be selected.

Recent .iso will install because the desktop icons are there, no panels,
however boot at end of install fails like reboot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1356683] Re: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 breaks unity on some intel hardware

2014-08-16 Thread jerrylamos
This is
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz

Lenovo 6234

This is a major company regular pc good performance running well. Runs
Win7 fine.

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu Utopic Unicorn (development branch)
Linux Lenovo2 3.16.0-5-generic #10-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 21 16:16:35 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

works fine for a development release. -6 also works.

-7 Xorg comes up, wallpaper and cursor, unity panels fail.
-8 same thing.

Starting unity from Ctrl-Alt-F1 command line results in errors, unity
fails. A number of lines with errors. I can't find a log with these
lines. A digital camera picture at 1920x1080 is likely unreadable.

Each day since -7, the daily-live current boots to wallpaper. No
panels. The install icon does appear on the screen and the .iso does
install, booting the installed utopic wallpaper only, no unity.

How do I post a ubuntu-bug that is valid since the current utopic unity
is failing on a regular pc from a major manufacturer?

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1356683] Re: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 breaks 3d support on some intel hardware

2014-08-15 Thread jerrylamos
Seems to me to be a race condition. Sometimes booting the 3.16.0-8
level I get wallpaper, no panels. Sometimes unity actually starts like
right now.

In any case, Xorg does not seem to have any problem. The screen is
displaying if only wallpaper O.K., cursor O.K.

Booted today's utopic .iso at 3.16.0-8, boots to wallpaper no unity
panels.

However the desktop icon for ubiquity is there, it does work. Installed
O.K. except for the wallpaper only no panels.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 I can try sudo unity. Gets a bunch of errors but I can't
find any log with that data to be able to attach it here.

2014-08-15 Thread jerrylamos
With this intel hardware, utopic linux image -5 and -6 unity comes up
fine.

linux image -7 unity always fails. Xorg is running fine, wallpaper,
cursor, O.K. Try starting unity and get a bunch of errors.

linux image -8 rarely boots to a running unity. usually fails.

So I boot changing the -8 to -5 and it comes up O.K.

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I don't know how to find 2:2.99.914-1-exp1ubuntu1 on this, or how to
tell what is in linux-image -5 vs. -8. It's the same ubuntu.

Of course, I'd happily omit 3D support if I could. As far as I know 3D
has nothing to do with firefox or google-chrome or office or whatever,
only non-functional screen appearance.

Would ubuntu-tweak turn off 3D so I could run?

Thanks.

xserver.xorg.video.intel 2:2.99.914-1-exp1ubuntu1

Since there's only one listed, isn't that used by both the linux image

On this utopic:

linux-image -5 works if I select it at boot.
linux-image -7 wallpaper only. unity won't start, lines full of errors.
linux-image -8 wallpaper only. I presume unity will get same errors.

How do I downgrade back to

I didn't see that choice in synaptic.

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910-0ubuntu1

couldn't find it either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1222602] Re: [regression] [gen3] Mesa 9.2 makes Unity unusable on Atom class hardware and 943/945 graphics controllers

2013-10-05 Thread jerrylamos
Acer Aspire 1 D255E Intel Atom N455 Intel Corporation Atom Processor
D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated Graphics Controller

MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=1.4 to the /etc/environment

is a big help on restoring desktop action. This netbook + external monitor has
been running ubuntu fine since 10.10.

Still have a bug1234839 which is launcher unhide/hide leaves the launcher
background as a big vertical black stripe instead of restoring the wallpaper.

Their choice. My choice is sharp and clear and quick. I take sharp
high res digital pictures, not fuzzy out of focus. Fuzzy blurred
reminds me of 1982 when I started on pc's.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1235201] [NEW] saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors

2013-10-04 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

Attached is screenshot. Acer Aspire 1 D255E Intel Atom N455
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor
D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated Graphics Controller
Huge window

Trying modes for CRTC 63
CRTC 63 trying mode 1920x1080@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 0)
many lines off the bottom of the screen.

Monito is actually 1920x1080 which is pretty small on a5.5 screen so I
usually set it with settings displays to 1360x768 just fine, or use
xandr to set it to 1366x768.

Been running development ubuntu since 10.10 and all through 13.10 never
saw this problem before.

I can run xandr and fix it, but issued ubuntu-bug as is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1234839] Re: saucy Beta 2 3.11.0-11 vertical black bar near left edge

2013-10-04 Thread jerrylamos
I did look at bug #123428 mine is not like that in that the vertical bar
is always there. Opening tabs doesn't fix it.

Launcher is hidden, when I mouse over the launcher appears where the
black bar is, however when launcher hides again the desktop is not
restored.

Also, as in #5, sometimes there is a vertical sliver of the desktop at
the extreme left then the vertical black bar then the desktop.

Never saw this in Beta 1 or any previous daily build of 13.10. BTW,
been running development ubuntu on this pc since 10.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1235201] Re: saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors

2013-10-04 Thread jerrylamos
Well, this setup doesn't have xorg.conf.g or xorg.conf. I used to use them all
the time but ubuntu deleted xorg.conf.
so I tried making an xorg.conf with the data which rebooted into into low
graphics mode.
Let me see if I can make a folder xorg.conf.g and put a member vga.conf into it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1235201] Re: saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors

2013-10-04 Thread jerrylamos
Tried again with /etc/X11/xorg.g/vga.conf. No luck. What I do to get a
usable desktop is:

#!/bin/bash
xrandr --newmode 1366x768_60.00 85.25 1366 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798
-hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 1366x768_60.00
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1366x768_60.00

Previously with ubuntu, did that once, works right away, then next boot
got me 1366x768 sometimes.

Sometimes in ubuntu development making a .xprofile with that would work
sometimes not.

Or else go into Settings Displays and set 1360x768 which has been pretty
reliable until last few days.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1235201] Re: saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors

2013-10-04 Thread jerrylamos
Chris, with /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/vga.conf as you specified booted right
up with no problem on configuration.

No big window top to bottom full of lines complaining about could not
apply stored configuration. Yay.

 cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep onitor
[19.831] (**) | |--Monitor default monitor
[19.831] (==) No monitor specified for screen Default Screen Section.
Using a default monitor configuration.
[19.936] (II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 has no monitor section
[20.036] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 has no monitor section
[20.036] (II) intel(0): Output VIRTUAL1 has no monitor section

Now I still have bug #1234839 which is as far as I can tell when the
launcher unhides it has a black background, and when the launcher hides
again the vertical black bar is left. The wallpaper is not restored for
that section.

Timo, I reported bug#1232426 on Lubuntu. I set the display configuration to
1360x768, built in monito orr, save it, working O.K., reboot and get back to
the default 1920x1080 (squint) built in monitor on. No big warning messages
about could not apply. stored configuration like I get with 1235201.. So on
every boot I have to set the configuration again. You people would know
whether this is a manifestation of the same problem.
Come to think of it, I could put this config.d/vga.conf on Lubuntu to see what
happens.

This bug 1235201 on Ubuntu/unity gets a huge window taking up 1/3 of the
center of the screen top to bottom many many lines and says it could
not apply the stored configuration for monitors. Comment #1 in this
bug has a screenshot of the picture.

Chris I can do some limited fix testing - I've never recompiled the
kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1234839] [NEW] saucy Beta 2 3.11.0-11 vertical black bar near left edge

2013-10-03 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

Just happened last couple of days. There's a vertical black bar on left
side of screen. Can't get rid of it with Settings Displays or xrandr.

Acer Aspire 1 D255E with 1.5.5 external monitor set to 1366x768 (will
run up to 1920x1080).

See screen capture attached.

Launcher normally hidden. Mouse over, launcher shows and fills the
black bar. Then launcher hides leaving a vertical sliver of the desktop
and a vertical black bar.

Appears that the code to restore the desktop after launcher hides is not
working.

Note xdiagnose is installed I could do an apport-collect 1234839 however
that does create a flood of data, only if someone is interested.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1232426] Re: Saicy beta Lubuntu does not save monitor configuration

2013-10-02 Thread jerrylamos
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu

** Description changed:

Monitor configuration in saucy beta Lubuntu is set to turn off built in
monitor and set external monitor to 1360 instead of default 1920
(squint, hard to read read 1920x1080 on a 15.5 monitor).

Save configuration. Reboot, saved configuration is ignored and boots up
with both monitors on, 1920x1080 instead of the configuration I saved,
  built in monitor off, 1360x768.

I haven't had this problem with ubuntu saucy beta 1 can't test it with
the latest saucy beta because ubiquity won't run (separate launchpad
  bug).
