[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip
A couple weeks ago I did a fresh install of ubuntu-14.04.desktop.iso LTS and the garbled text bug 1507255 was back. Usual fix of Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" EndSection worked. Xenial new installs have been fine lately. Putting that uxa fix in Xenial prevents X windows from running. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1507255 Title: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/1507255/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip
Starting in November 2014 Ubuntu X windows screwed up with VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) making Wallpaper badly hashed. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1507255 Then a couple months later even Ubuntu text badly garbled, illegible. Workarond was: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" EndSection So in every install since Nov. 2014 I've been making that change. As of March 2016, that change screws up X windows and can't get desktop. Voila, not needed, Xwindows now running fine. That took Ubuntu a year and a half to fix. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
I tested http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ Wallpaper badly garbled. Images from ubuntu O.K., but any text sent by ubuntu badly garbled unreadable. Fix in comment #41 works fine. Do note, 14.04 LTS had been running fine until 1/29 update screwed up network, so I re-installed 14.04 Surprise, 14.04 now garbled too. Fix in comment #41 worked fine. It's a bit of a struggle. Booting the .iso text from ubuntu unreadable. I've done enough installs to guess what the choices are. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip
My comments on entry #13: gedit 20-intel.conf Copy in the lines starting with Section and ending with EndSection: [code] Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" EndSection [/code] save quit sudo cp 20-intel.conf /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d enter your password Check to see if the entry made it into the directory O.K.: cat /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf Now /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is read once on boot so you have to reboot for it to take effect. What this configuration does is tell X11 to use the method "uxa" an older section of code, since on this pc the newer code "sna" screws up. If this configuration doesn't work for you, then delete the 20-intel.conf entry in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d Now Xenial and Wily install .iso's are a real bear to read on this Lenovo M58p because of the garbled text. On finish of install, before I do a reboot, I use the install ubunto to make the conf.d entry into the target ubuntu install. That's a bit tricky. Bios update is in 1404247 - if it screws up I've got a dead computer. 1410 and before run just fine. November and before 1504 ran fine. Win7 just fine. Comment #11 found earlier vivid wallpaper works fine. (as does 14.10, 14.04, ...) Nov. 10 vivid .iso fresh install on another partition. Boots with wallpaper O.K. every time. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Testing vervid I do updates most days and installs every couple weeks. Typically there are a whole pile of packages (!) so us users don't install package by package so we can't tell which caused the trouble. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Jan 4 vivid 64 .iso still same problem, wallpaper vertical bars and hashed. Rebooted latest update vivid. Monitor is 1920x1080., vertical bar background. Internet windows and terminal windows fine. Tried 1360x768. Wallpaper Vertical bars. Tried 1280x720. Vertical bars. Tried 1024x768. Wallpaper O.K. but figure is stretched horizontally, i.e. fat because resolution geometry 4:3 doesn't fit screen 16:9. Switched back to 1360x768, Wallpaper now O.K. ??? Conclusion, something screwed up in the calculations for varying resolution from 1920x768 (tiny print) to legible 1360x768. Only calculation that's reliable is 1024x768, which is 4:3 does not look good on this 16:9 screen besides being too coarse. What code does the calculations for choice of pixels for varying resolutions? lightdm? Xorg? Unity? Sure would help if Bug #1405867 were fixed so that selecting different wallpapers actually changed the wallpaper instead of having to reboot to get different wallpaper. Maybe the problem description is invalid, however the problem is very real. See also ttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1359299, confirmed, multiple users report problem. Utopic amd64 does not work on Lenovo ThinkCentre. Intel Core 2 duo 3.0 gHz 4 mb. Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Just did an install here today, using the last 3.16.0-6 iso I have saved. Installed, compiz unity running. Updated to latest amd64 .iso, 26 August, which includes the 3.16.0-10 kernel. 3.16.0-10 kernel, boots to wallpaper. No compiz hence no unity. Reboot selecting 3.16.0-6 out of /boot, compiz and unity running. Whatever is wrong, it's in the ubuntu kernel. Everything else is the same. BTW, i386 32 bit 3.16.0-10 compiz and unity run. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware
I get a similar compiz error on amd64. In my case, booting 3.16.0.6 kernels or before work fine. Booting amd64 3.16.0-7, -8, -9, -10 kernels on the same install the desktop runs but compiz hence unity do not. Booting the newer .iso the live session fails the same way. Follow through with the install and of course compiz etc. fail. booting the 3.16.0-6 amd64 .iso runs fine. I don't know if it is the same install are the different kernels chosen out of /boot using the same Intel video driver? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1359299 Do note, i386 32 bit 3.16.0-10 install and kernel on the same pc run fine (for a development version). How different is the 32 bit and the 64 bit compiz? Of course, amd64 Lubuntu runs fine. 3.16.0-9 i386 32 bit boots normally. Very rarely boots to desktop and cursor no unity. 3.16.0-9 amd64 always boots to desktop no unity. X is up, compiz hence unity are not. 3.16..0-8 rarely boots to unity, usually to desktop and cursor only. This utopic install was initially linux image 3.16.0-5. Updated to -7 compiz and unity fail, X11 running fine to desktop no panels. Updated to -8 first boot from dead cold overnight boots O.K. Reboots compiz and unity fail. Externally acts like a race condition that works sometimes other times not. Updated to -9 First boot from dead cold overnight booted O.K. Reboot compiz and unity fail. How come same utopic selecting linux-image -5 works every time selecting linux image -8 or -9 do not? Recent .iso boots fail every time because there's no linux-image -5 to be selected. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1356683] Re: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 breaks 3d support on some intel hardware
Seems to me to be a race condition. Sometimes booting the 3.16.0-8 level I get wallpaper, no panels. Sometimes unity actually starts like right now. In any case, Xorg does not seem to have any problem. The screen is displaying if only wallpaper O.K., cursor O.K. Booted today's utopic .iso at 3.16.0-8, boots to wallpaper no unity panels. However the desktop icon for ubiquity is there, it does work. Installed O.K. except for the wallpaper only no panels. Ctrl-Alt-F1 I can try sudo unity. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1234839] Re: saucy Beta 2 3.11.0-11 vertical black bar near left edge
I did look at bug #123428 mine is not like that in that the vertical bar is always there. Opening tabs doesn't fix it. Launcher is hidden, when I mouse over the launcher appears where the black bar is, however when launcher hides again the desktop is not restored. Also, as in #5, sometimes there is a vertical sliver of the desktop at the extreme left then the vertical black bar then the desktop. Never saw this in Beta 1 or any previous daily build of 13.10. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1235201] Re: saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors
Well, this setup doesn't have xorg.conf.g or xorg.conf. I used to use them all the time but ubuntu deleted xorg.conf. so I tried making an xorg.conf with the data which rebooted into into low graphics mode. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1235201] Re: saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors
Tried again with /etc/X11/xorg.g/vga.conf. No luck. What I do to get a usable desktop is: #!/bin/bash xrandr --newmode 1366x768_60.00 85.25 1366 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA1 1366x768_60.00 xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1366x768_60.00 Previously with ubuntu, did that once, works right away, then next boot got me 1366x768 sometimes. Sometimes in ubuntu development making a .xprofile with that would work sometimes not. Or else go into Settings Displays and set 1360x768 which has been pretty reliable until last few days. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1235201 Title: saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1235201/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1235201] Re: saucy beta 2 could not apply the stored configuration for monitors
Chris, with /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/vga.conf as you specified booted right up with no problem on configuration. No big window top to bottom full of lines complaining about could not apply stored configuration. Yay. cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep onitor [19.831] (**) | |--Monitor default monitor [19.831] (==) No monitor specified for screen Default Screen Section. Using a default monitor configuration. [19.936] (II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 has no monitor section [20.036] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 has no monitor section [20.036] (II) intel(0): Output VIRTUAL1 has no monitor section Now I still have bug #1234839 which is as far as I can tell when the launcher unhides it has a black background, and when the launcher hides again the vertical black bar is left. The wallpaper is not restored for that section. Timo, I reported bug#1232426 on Lubuntu. I set the display configuration to 1360x768, built in monito orr, save it, working O.K., reboot and get back to the default 1920x1080 (squint) built in monitor on. No big warning messages about could not apply. stored configuration like I get with 1235201.. So on every boot I have to set the configuration again. You people would know whether this is a manifestation of the same problem. Come to think of it, I could put this config.d/vga.conf on Lubuntu to see what happens. This bug 1235201 on Ubuntu/unity gets a huge window taking up 1/3 of the center of the screen top to bottom many many lines and says it could not apply the stored configuration for monitors. Comment #1 in this bug has a screenshot of the picture. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1234839] [NEW] saucy Beta 2 3.11.0-11 vertical black bar near left edge
Public bug reported: Just happened last couple of days. There's a vertical black bar on left side of screen. Can't get rid of it with Settings Displays or xrandr.
