[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
More information, it's possible to load the module with these instructions:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/705878/can-i-fix-my-corrupted-lubuntu-splash-screen-having-disabled-the-graphical-term

Looking at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf there is this comment:
# Framebuffer drivers are generally buggy and poorly-supported, and cause
# suspend failures, kernel panics and general mayhem. For this reason we
# never load them automatically.

So it seems that the reason this module does not load automatically is
intentional.

Now that the X.org driver for this chip has been removed and it relies
completely on the framebuffer module, maybe it would make sense to look
into slightly better support for the framebuffer modules?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I still have this problem on Ubuntu 15.10. Note that this version does
not contain the xserver-xorg-video-sis anymore, but it does contain the
sisfb module.

Now the vesafb driver is loaded now, but it does not seem to be a
module. I tried to use the instructions from this thread to load sisfb
instead plus updating the initramfs files, but it didn't work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1423381

I think that the in-kernel vesafb prevents sisfb from loading or it's
not properly added to the initramfs.

Should I reopen this bug or create a new one?

I can confirm with problem with an ASUS Degatto and Ubuntu 13.10. The
mediahacks driver solves the crash. It seems there are still very small
graphical glitches from time to time though.

The chip in my case is: SiS650 revision ID 90 (M650 A1 AA)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999141] Re: Dual monitor DisplayPort stopped working.

2012-10-08 Thread Julius Thor
Just docked my laptop and woke it up from sleep and it detected the two
monitors.

This was either fixed in the latest kernel or after I disabled polling
in drm_kms_helper:

echo N /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

I put it into /etc/rc.local to make it permanent.

Tried DisplayPort again today and this problem still persists. I did
make another test, however:

I can get DisplayPort working if I boot the computer docked and
DisplayPort plugged into the dock. If i then undock the computer and
redock, DisplayPort will not activate again and xrandr shows no
indication of a Monitor being connected to any of the DisplayPorts.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595661] Re: please support h264 hardware acceleration on certain intel video cards

2012-08-23 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
The included Intel driver in Precise still misses support for H.264 and the G45
chips. To solve this issue quickly, one can use these commands:
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/vaapi/intel-driver intel-driver
cd intel-driver/
apt-cache show libva1|grep Version
git checkout 1.0.15 (replace 1.0.15 with the version from above when it differs)
git pull origin g45-h264
./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install

I haven't tested with playing videos yet, but this makes vainfo show
three extra H264 profiles.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 979035] Re: Many glitches after a while with the Intel driver

2012-05-29 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Hi Bryce, the glitches are the typical ones when the driver runs into
memory allocation issues. Black widgets, disappearing windows, etc. I
haven't been able to reproduce the problem anymore. It seems that one
time it occurred after a few days with some heavy use of the GPU with
OpenGL games and videos.

You should look at the attached XorgLogOld.txt which includes the lines
which show the memory allocation issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999141] [NEW] Dual monitor DisplayPort stopped working.

2012-05-14 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

After I updated today using Update-Manager I can no longer use my
secondary monitor which is connected via DisplayPort. This was a problem
a few months ago and it seems to have creeped back into ubuntu? I used
to use VGA while this was a problem and I have reverted back to that
workaround. The image is considerably worse so I hope whatever broke the
DisplayPort code gets reverted back.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 872209] Re: Cannot change display resolution or detect secondary display

2011-11-08 Thread Julius Thor
Hi,

It's sort of solved. After an update later on I was able to output to
a VGA so I can now use Dual head. I am not able to use DisplayPort,
however, but I do believe that a bug report has been made for that
issue.

I guess this one can be closed then.

Thanks!

 Hey joolli,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
 Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
 release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue?  If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

  Hello,

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel

reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the system
making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without freeze and
sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let me
shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that
difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I foun
that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with the
notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi network
connection to my router is not interrupted.

2010-08-12 Thread julius
That's the beauty with GNU/Linux distros, you have the power to choose my
friend. As for me I'm still satisfied with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Maybe when
10.04.1 will be released I hope that most of the major bugs are already
polished.

After 4 years of Ubuntu and 3 months of random freezing I've migrated to
 PCLinuxOS.

It is easy to install, works flawlessly, and is based on later packages
 than Ubuntu.

It appears that Ubuntu devs do not give a c**p about a critical bug in
their distribution. In that case, and with regret, the only way to gain
 stability is to look elsewhere.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-06 Thread julius
Guys, i just found a solution on how to end the random freezing problem
in Ubuntu 10.04. I have tried disabling the Visual Effects a.k.a.
Compiz by going to Preference - Appearance - Visual Effects, then check
the None button. Thats how I did with my system and there are no more
random freeze. The bad thing is that there are no more visual effects
but I can live with the Metacity features in Gnome. My system works
faster, now that I turned off Compiz.

This is the X.org log of the current session. I have tried changing many
options in xorg.conf already but they did not influence anything.
