Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
So it did, you are right. 'vesa' seems to be working when I use 'nomodeset'. I see slight screen corruption on window borders, but nothing serious. At least it works now, thanks. -- [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
Sorry to disappoint, but I just re-checked and indeed all test data I submitted so far had set the DRI=off option (as can be seen from the Xorg logs I posted). This stems from the very first tests I did, and in order not to introduce to many variables, I left it at that setting. So I can confirm at least that nomodeset and DRI=off has no apparent positive effect on my hardware.
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
Update: I backed out xorg-edgers from my machine. Non-edgers driver does indeed work without KMS, and acpi=off seems to stop the freezes. nomodeset has no apparent effect. Summary: -freezes with nomodeset -does _not_ freeze with acpi=off Problems with acpi=off: -no sound -no wifi -no power management -possible other irq-related problems (since acpi is used to configure the hardware interrupts nowadays) I tested with current distribution kernel (2.6.31-15 I think), but mainline kernel seems to behave more or less the same in this regard. Note: additional tests by Andrea could actually be of interest, since he runs the same hardware (Asus M2400N). My device has upgraded wifi (ipw2200), but that should not matter. BTW I have to concur with Andreas opinion: the fact that the current Intel drivers have such severe problems on older hardware and no developer ever seemed to deem it necessary to maintain stable support for existing machines is quite upsetting. I have currently only two options: to either downgrade to Hardy (at least until support is dropped) or to throw away perfectly good hardware. Or is there a possibility to disable the HAL detection of the graphics hardware, thus forcing the machine to vesa graphics or something? That would be at least a little help (I don't exactly need hardware acceleration on that machine).
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
Geir, I am sorry to report that without ACPI support my laptop won't initialize its hardware properly at all, resulting in a (non-functional) low-graphics-fallback. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
I've tried both kernels, and it does not seem to have any effect. The machine starts, then X starts into low graphics mode and a window opens, telling me that the Intel driver is complaining about no kernel modesetting support. I have not made further experiments if I can get it to initialise somehow, though I have no idea what to try anyway. And I have also no idea how kernel mode setting is connected to ACPI, although it seems to be the case, apparently. Note: run in low graphics mode for one session does not seem to work as expected, either. If I select it, I get a window stand by one minute while the display restarts..., and then exactly nothing happens, until I actively click that window away. Then X closes, and everything starts on square one, with the same error message I mentioned earlier.
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
So, finally got round to creating updated logs (including DebugFlushCaches). Updated upstream information, duplicating here just in case. - Slightly updated test case (hopefully not too many changed unknowns, had to do an system update): -mainline kernel 2.6.32-020632rc6-generic, rc5 is still on the machine if wanted -current X.org drivers from 'xorg edgers' PPA: 2:2.9.0+git20091106.dbb68168-0ubuntu0tormod I have also enabled the Option DebugFlushCaches in xorg.conf. Updated batchbuffer dumps and logs are attached. I do not know if this is relevant, but the X freeze produces lots of repeated lines in dmesg like this: snip! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
So, retried with updated Karmic (2009-10-31 13:00 CET), xorg.edgers, xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.9.0 (2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2), mainline kernel (2.6.32-020632rc5-generic). Still hanging, though now I get a complete system lockup when trying to read from /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_regs. I have attached a complete archive, since I don't know what will be needed. If needed, I can also upload this at freedesktop.org. ** Attachment added: Batchbuffer dump logs http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34771176/dri_debug-2009-10-31.tgz -- [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hi, On Thu, 29 Oct 2009 16:56:00 -, Geir Ove Myhr gom...@gmail.com wrote: kalessin, please subscribe to the upstream bug report by adding yourself to the CC: field, so that you may provide the intel developers with any additional information that they might need. I think they would be extra happy if you could test an updated Karmic with xorg-edgers (bleeding edge xorg-stuff, https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) and possibly also the latest mainline kernel at (currently v2.6.32-rc5/, you only need to install the linux-image deb package for your platform), and provide fresh logs and batchbuffer dumps. this might sound like a really dumb question, but: CC field? I assume at bugs.freedesktop.org, I'll have to get an account there. I will re-try everything with bleeding edge updates and get a new buffer dump, hopefully tomorrow, Saturday at the latest. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] [NEW] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Summary: X server freezes shortly after startup. The problem is similar to several problems already reported with the intel driver, but opening a separate bug report (for the time being) since none of the existing entries quite matches my configuration. Feel free to mark it as duplicate if you think it is. System: Kubuntu 'Karmic', updated yesterday (2009-10-09). Buffer dump is attached. Description: The X server locks up shortly after it is started, no matter what I do. Usually this happens when the login procedure is just about finished, but I have also seen it after KDM waiting for some time for the login credentials. Mouse pointer remains functional, apart from that complete lock (esp. keyboard). Magic sys'req key still works, but when I try SReq-(R,E,I), KDM seems to try to restart X, resulting in a *really* complete lockup (even my ssh diagnostics session dies). Notes: I had the same problem with Jaunty, but there it helped forcing the driver to use XAA instead of EXA. The newer driver does not support that ('Option AccelMethod is not used'), and cannot be forced to disable acceleration either ('Option NoAccel is not used'). And thanks to the new near-magic auto detection scheme, it is not even trivial to fall back to the VESA driver... so Karmic is completely and utterly non- usable on that machine. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: i855 karmic -- Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
