[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 759803] Re: Unity-2d not working on KVM with xen and cirrus video devices

2011-07-26 Thread reini
I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 and am getting some really similar glitches with normal
(effects-enabled) KDE (not 100% reproducably, though). 24bpp is a really common
value for all the machines I used in the last 8 years (X has been
auto-detecting this for years). This is physical machines I'm talking about,
btw.
IIRC, it used to be a pretty standard reply that 24bpp and 32bpp were
essentially the same thing and, for some reason I never quite understood, X11
prefers the former.

I believe it is quite safe to say that 24bpp need to be supported
properly...

I see. That must have to do with the part I failed to understand.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 539898] Re: [i965gm] X server crash with KDE SC 4.4 compositing

The issue was present up to and including maverick, at which point I did
a complete reinstall since I had previously confirmed that this would
get rid of the problem. The issue hasn't occurred for me since, even
though I seriously doubt it has been fixed in natty.

Spoke too soon - the crash is still here in maverick. The workaround
using startx instead of KDM still works, even though that means no
standby, suspend to disk or power management functionality from within
KDE.

After more than two days extensive usage, neiter the toggling scroll
lock nor the crashes related to pressing certain keys have occurred in
maverick, so this bug seems to be fixed in Kubuntu 10.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575055] Re: Xserver crash when hitting certain keys while scroll lock is activated

2010-05-07 Thread reini
I have tried several things to work around this problem by now:

 * adding nomodeset to the kernel parameters in grub
 * using the vesa driver instead of the intel driver
 * removing xorg.conf altogether
 * turning off DRI
 * disabling scim
 * using a different user account

None of these made a difference - X still crashes whenever the Enter
key is hit while scroll lock is behaving erratically.

I also tried installing a fresh version of Kubuntu (Lucid, 64bit
version this time) to an external harddrive and it did not exhibit
the bug. I will try to apply my current configuration to that install
over the next few days to see if I can find out what triggers the
bug.

After a day of almost no enter key usage, I haven't had a single crash.
As soon as I actually had to use the Enter key again, the next crash
occured. I also noticed that using either the enter key or pressing
Shif+2 (to geht ) while scroll lock had turned itself on reliably
resulted in the crash.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 450858] [NEW] X server crash while watching video and playing cards

2009-10-13 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The X server frequently crashes if I watch a video using xine while doing
something else (playing cards in KPatience, programming in Eclipse, sometimes
even just switching desktops).
After the crash, kdm re-starts the X server and I can log back in.
The crash also sometimes happens while I'm simply working, although it occurrs
much more frequently when I watch video.

What happens during the crash:
The screen switches to tty1 while any sound (music, from the video, ...) keeps
playing for several seconds (3-5). After a while the X server comes back on and
the login screen is displayed.

I'm using Jaunty.

Sure can. No freezes since I installed it, and I installed it as soon
as it hit the proposed repos +- a couple of hours.

There are several freezes in the intel driver - could you describe

Please report positive and negative feedback about this package

The package in the above repository is considered older than the
current version from proposed (which doesn't incorporate Albert
Damen's patch). It might be difficult for some to select the older
package for installation. It would be nice if somebody would somehow
bump the version or something to make the package from the above

2009-06-06 Thread reini
I haven't had this kind of freeze in several hours now. I have,
however, experienced another freeze where the screen just froze and
nothing reacted anymore (no mouse movement, nothing).

I believe this to be a different bug and will report it separately as
soon as I get around to it.

For now, this should count as positive feedback for the patch in the
green repository.

Am Samstag 06 Juni 2009 schrieb Martin Pitt:
 Hello all,

many thanks to Albert Damen for his comprehensive analysis. The
cited kernel patches are only for UXA and don't backport well, so
we won't backport them to Jaunty (at least not now). However, his
aperture patch already got good feedback and seems to fix the
problem in a much better way than the previous VirtualSize
workaround which is currently sitting in -proposed.

Can people who are affected by this and who run a standard
configuration (i. e. NO UXA, NO KMS, NO 2.6.30 kernel, etc.)

I tend to agree with you.

I'd like to point out that I tried the old (i.e. intrepid) driver
version (don't remember where I found it - it was somewhere in the
ubuntu wiki AFAIR). It didn't change the freezing problem at all
(made it worse if anything).

So switching back to the old driver isn't really a very helpful
suggestion...

That's very odd... the problem definitely wasn't around in
 Intrepid, at least for me.

Same here. It would seem that the bug was already present but not
provoked, I guess.
Anyway, since Albert posted his patch, all my problems with the
freezing issue have gone away, so I'm not switching to
Karmic/whatever until I know that there's a patch that will work on
that platform.
And Intrepid had a few other issues that I don't want to worry about
again.

2009-06-04 Thread reini
I guess from your post that your Hardy and Intrepid were bug-free?
Because mine sure weren't...

The most annoying bugs I experienced had this nice little phrase
somewhere near the bottom of the bug-thread. I went something like
that: Please upgrade to intrepid to see if the the issue still
exists there. (jaunty, for those that existed in Intrepid).
Kinda like Bryce's response to santorc a few posts up...

Now, you tell me what to do when you experience *major*
inconveniences (e.g. network connection being dropped all the time
and no way to properly restore it - that was fixed by an upgrade to
jaunty, BTW; or this screen freezing issue) and being stonewalled
with the above suggestion...

Neither the version in proposed (2.6.3-0ubuntu9.2) nor the one from x-swat
(2.7.1-0ubuntu1~xup~1) actually fix this bug. I can reproduce it by simply
deceasing CPU frequency as much as possible and starting up 4 glxgears. The
freeze usually occurs within one minute.
With Albert Damen's patch, the version from jaunty-proposed ran for the whole
night (6hrs) under these conditions.
