I have a Asus G75VW and I've tried 12.04 13.10 and the F5 F6 for screen brightness doesn't work. So Ubuntu can't fix this for us, we have to chase this after Upstream? Personally I thought a big point to Ubuntu was to make for easier end- user usage and support, so I don't think the end-user should have to chase the Upstream for fixes, Ubuntu should be helping here to do this. I would greatly appreciate it if Canonical could get this fixed. - Also my F2 key for the Wifi doesn't work. Got it almost working on elementary OS Lune (based on Precise). Used to modify /etc/default/grub and xorg.conf on my previous installs, but brightness controls would only work after resuming from suspend. I did a new install, and simply installed the latest Nvidia driver in the repos (319), as well as xbacklight. That did the trick. I can now modify the brightness with the xbacklight command without doing any modification to grub or Xorg config, and without having to resume from suspend. The brightness keys and the brightness slider in Settings still don't work though, but I assigned keyboard shortcuts to xbacklight -inc 10 and xbacklight -dec 10 and it works ok. I doesn't really fix the bug, but is much more convenient and simple that tinkering with various config files. Brightness settings work perfectly after installing the latest version of nvidiabl but the fn keys still dont work at all. I can change the brightness using the slider in system settings and by command line but the keys are not working still. Oh the horror... Guess what? What ever upgrade came down the pipe earlier today did not seem to have survived a reboot. What a damn shame. Now, my brightness control NO LONGER works, and we're back to square one. Still the same kernel, still on 13.04. I was so happy to see the brightness control work from the Brightness and Lock settings, and from the Fn Keys... but no... Really, though -- what's happening here? Guys, I found the old bug #726692 (which had been even been filed by myself) which contains a fix at least for my hardware (which is not an Asus but a MacBook Pro, see comment #8). The fix for me is to add this line in xorg.conf: Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1 Then log out and in again, and it works for me. Sorry that I did not think of having filed this report before - I did not have to make this change for a long time. That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug. I don't think this has anything at all to do with the nVidia drivers. The brightness keys require a completely seperate driver from ASUS on windows. Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . I think the problem is outside the scope of nVidia's drivers. It seems to be an issue of a lack of driver for the screen brightness control itself and the ACPI keys on the laptop. The funny thing is, pretty much all other Fn keys work, including media buttons, wifi on/off, suspend, switch monitors, turn off monitor, audio, and even calling up the calculator with Fn+NumEnter works. I've tried building some kernels by modifying the config from the ubuntu defaults matching the settings mentioned in that Gentoo thread with no luck. I would not take this as gospel though since I don't feel that I'm terribly competent with kernel building. In reply to Rainer Rohde: there are only so many developers and so much time, and many of the bug-fixers both up and downstream aren't even getting paid for their work. A non-critical issue on a single model of notebook won't be at the top of the priority list. It seems that other hardware is also affected. Running Quantal, I don't have backlight control with Nvidia drivers on a MacBook Pro 5, (mid-2009) with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. There is a forum thread discussing missing backlight control with this hardware in Precise: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2042999 It says that it helped to install the nvidia_bl module from the same source as was given here i the Asus bug report in comment #5. Nvidia backlight control worked on this machine for all releases I tried starting in 2009 up to Oneiric.
