Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1664397] Re: Mouse trails and distorted cursor on 2nd monitor

2017-05-18 Thread Edward Gibbs
I checked my setup and I am set to Discrete Graphics in BIOS, not Hybrid.
So the Intel firmware should not really matter, it should be all nvidia. I
am using the x-org open-source driver for the nvidia card, not the
proprietary nvidia one.

16.10 and 17.04 do have their issues on the P50, most notable sleep
problems. I could never get 16.10 to sleep and wake properly, 17.04 is
better but my external keyboard doesn't work after waking. Other than that
(and the lack of LTS, of course) they seem pretty good. One other reason
to upgrade (or at least upgrade the kernel) is that the Thunderbolt didn't
work under 16.04 but does with kernel 4.8 and above. But of you don't have
a Thunderbolt drive that won't matter.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1664397] Re: Mouse trails and distorted cursor on 2nd monitor

2017-05-18 Thread maarten
Upgrading to a non-LTS version has it's downsides, and I have read
reports of people that experience the same problems after upgrading up
to 17.04.

I now installed an Intel version of the 21.20.16.4590 driver for Windows
10 from the Lenovo website, but it's actually not meant for the P50
laptop with Intel P530 graphics but for the X260 and T460 instead with
Intel P520 graphics:

   http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/nl/en/downloads/ds105823.

It installed without complaining though, but I don't know if it also
tried to replace the graphics firmware ...

... the mouse pointer is still flickering and dissapearing though.

I'll try to get Lenovo's attention on this issue.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1664397] Re: Mouse trails and distorted cursor on 2nd monitor

2017-05-17 Thread Edward Gibbs
I would say to try 16.10 or 17.04 if you can, or upgrade the 16.04 kernel.
Sad to say I was never really sure what fixed it for me, one day it was
just better.

I'm not at the machine right now so I can't give you the specifics, but I
doubt if any of the Windows drivers will fix it in Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1664397] Re: Mouse trails and distorted cursor on 2nd monitor

2017-02-25 Thread Edward Gibbs
Well, it was not a firmware update that fixed it. I'm on Qubes 4.2
right now and it still has the problem, Qubes is using Xfce 4.12 as
it's desktop manager, which I believe is Ubuntu based. Some update to
Ubuntu must have fixed the problem and it hasn't been rolled into the
Xfce version Qubes is using.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1664397] Re: Mouse trails and distorted cursor on 2nd monitor

2017-02-25 Thread Edward Gibbs
As requested I downloaded the latest build and ran it from USB. After
selecting hybrid graphics in BIOS I booted up and was delighted to see
no mouse trails on the 2nd monitor!

I then rebooted back into 16.04 leaving hybrid graphics selected - no
mouse trails!

I think there was an Intel firmware update a week or two ago that I got
on Windows, maybe it updated the Intel graphics firmware? Whatever
happened I am happy to say that I cannot now duplicate the problem and
hybrid graphics seems to be working properly in both 16.04 and 17.10.

Thanks for your help.
