I too have the same problem. Is there a known fix?

The problem appears to be fixed in Karmic (at least it works for me),
but there have been reports of other problems with Karmic. YMMV. In
the meanwhile, someone has suggested adding these lines to the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf configuration file, in the Device section (mine
looks like this):

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod uxa
Option EXAOptimizeMigration true
Option MigrationHeuristicgreedy
EndSection

(It's been a while so I don't know who to attribute this to). This
might or might not work for you. Good luck!

 Section Device
        Identifier      Configured Video Device
        Driver intel
        Option AccelMethod uxa
        Option          EXAOptimizeMigration          true
        Option          MigrationHeuristic            greedy
 EndSection

None of these options have any effect in Karmic. UXA is the only
AccelMethod available, and unlike EXA and XAA which have been used in
the past, there is no migration involved.

Status in “grace” package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: grace

The fonts in xmgrace, in Jaunty, are incorrectly rendered, as in the
 example attached. This
was observed in more than one jaunty instalation for me.

The fonts appear as if they were selected, but also very poorly rendered.
 This bug
was not present in Intrepid or Hardy in the same machines.

 How to reproduce it:

1 - Install xmgrace: sudo apt-get install grace
 2 - Run xmgrace: xmgrace

 Reproducible always.

This is my hardware, this may be one of the problems related to the Intel
 graphics
driver of Jaunty, but not necessarily:
