[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397420] Re: jaunty, xserver crash on startup, toshiba tecra m1

2009-11-11 Thread Hanns Fuerniss
O.K. That seem probable, because it's the gdm image that appears.
I removed gdm completly and made the changes /etc/gdm -- /etc/gdm_save too. It
works up to now. Thanks Thomi.

I'm still using Kubuntu jaunty (9.04), but I made the change from Ubuntu
(gdm) to Kubuntu (kdm) and that's why there was a gdm installed on my
system.

Well, during that time I investigated a little more about the graphics system
and found that it could be something with RandR (definitly not the hal package
bacause it's all about input devices - sorry, I didn't understand that.)
My assumption is because of: if I use the raw xorg.conf with nearly no
specifications about my graphics system, it works fine. No message about low
graphics mode - but it's running in 800x600 solution on 800x600 pixels, means
leaves a black frame on my monitor. I tried to modify the RandR configuration
like in http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/RandR but the frame didn't disappear, I
only had a bigger screen 'behind' the frame (like looking through a hole of
800x600).
With the modified xorg.conf (s.a.) and the changes of /etc/gdm it works.
I didn't update to 9.10 because I'm dependent on a running stystem at the
moment. I'll do that as soon as possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397420] Re: jaunty, xserver crash on startup, toshiba tecra m1

2009-11-10 Thread Thomas Winteler
hi all

i have searched trough a lot of bugs with problems running in low graphics
mode in 9.10.
I have upgraded kubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and get also this error.. and found, i
hope for all others using kubuntu 9.10, a solution.

in /etc there is the gmd dir: /etc/gdm
and in this dir is an empty file: failsafe

but the default display manager is kdm:
more /etc/X11/default-display-manager
/usr/bin/kdm

gdm isn't installed on my system.. so..

..i renamed /etc/gdm to eg. /etc/gdm_save, rebooted more then once my
system and voilĂ ... no problem with low graphics mode..

my system:
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
Codename: karmic

graphic:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G73 [GeForce Go 7700]
(rev a1)

graphic driver:
nvidia-glx-185

hope this helps others here...

have a nice time :)
thomi

2009-08-11 Thread Hanns Fuerniss
I didn't try 9.10 alpha3 yet, but with kernel update to 2.6.28-14.47 it works
mostly, means, while booting nearly 95% of the cases the kdm-login (x-server)
starts Korrektly. only sometimes the message you're running in low graphics
mode and ... appears. Then I solve the problem by choosing console login in
the click-box - and after some magical seconds while typing my login (on tty2)
... appears the kdm-login and everything seems normal. weired but working. I
would set this to 95% solved if possible :-)
It does not seem to be an xorg-server-problem. wrong package I think. (still
hal is my suspect)

2009-07-16 Thread Hanns Fuerniss
Thanks,
but how do I know what package it might be? (how do you that it's xserver-
org?)
I suspected the hal package because the old dapper configuration with
xorg.conf worked fine, then the problem appeared with the new hal all-in-one-
hide-all thing (I really don't know how to configure hal! can I at all?).

sorry, I don't want to criticize, only wonder how?
thanks,
hanns
