Thanks bryce, but this problem happened also with compiz disabled. Anyway I can't reproduce it. Please look to bug #419264 - which is a high cpu issue but on compiz. A kernel patch is proposed which seems to fix that one and maybe this one as well. I'm running it to see the cpu consumption. Anyway after lost of reboots and a change the bug is vanished: - uninstalled virtualbox 3 (deb from the site) - removed the compiled kernel modules This could be the problem, but I can't explain to myself why this happened from the live cd too. Btw, for future reference you can learn the graphics card by looking at the Lspci.txt file for the line that says VGA compatible controller. I prefer to look at Xorg.0.log, searching for Chipset line. I find it easier for newer chipsets like GM45 and Q45 wich has a pretty non- descriptive lspci description. (--) intel(0): Chipset: Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset instead of 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07) (--) intel(0): Chipset: Q45/Q43 instead of 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2e12] (rev 03) Take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Tagging for a list of intel chipsets. I don't know if it's normal that no xorg.conf has been generated, will check. It is normal. I have seen several bug reports lately where there is no xorg.conf and on my Karmic installation there is none either.
