2010-01-22 Thread Philip Muškovac
Hi, I wondered if this bug still exists for anyone? If you used KDM
whlie having GDM installed then this bug should be a dup of bug 491483
which was fixed a while ago for gdm. (Still exists for gdm-2.20 though)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-12-07 Thread DerDave
I confirm the bug, since latest updates including xorg and kernel-image-
generic.

I don't think it's driver related, since I'm using *unsupported* fglrx and a
simple /etc/init.d/kdm restart works beautiful...
It really looks like something is loading wrong at boot time, or at the wrong
moment,

Chances are, it's a kdm startup bug, since i read somewhere that gdm
isn't affected.

Hope it helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-12-07 Thread DerDave
Actually, I solved my problem, which was fglrx-related. Removing
/etc/ati/amdpcsdb was the solution to my error message fglrx: Unknown
EDID version 0. X server failed to start and I was in the situation
described above.

Anyway it looks like this is happening any time X11 fails to start.

Hope you'll find your way !

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-12-06 Thread Michiel Brentjens
I see the same happening here: fully updated (dec. 4 2009) 64 bit
Kubuntu Karmic on AMD, NVIDIA 190.42 binary driver from nvidia web site.
Kubuntu with KDM. No problems when GDM is used. console login with
startx works flawlessly. Kernel version 2.6.31-16-generic. Quickly
selecting console from the Low resolution dialog also lets KDE start
properly here.

2009-12-04 Thread Peter Antoniac
Thank you for your reports. To figure out the culprit, might be a good
idea to start from console (without KDM) and login as user and fire up
startx and see if everything works well? Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-12-04 Thread drInfierno
Hi!
I've been struggling with that problem... As far I've seen:
-When kdm is about to init (after starting/restarting the computer), there
is some problem switching to X and the system gets hanged in variable forms:
completely (only the computer's on/off button to scape), or garbage in the
screen, or displaying low graphics dialog. Many times, when loading with kernel
2.6.31-15, was a complete hanged, unresponsiveness blank screen. I could at the
end get the 'low graphics' dialog by loading previous versions of kernel
2.6.31-14 and 2.6.28-16. This required sometimes not to delay to choose the
console option or even the inferior part of the dialog dissapeared under the
bottom of the screen after some kind of automatic resolution change... in
general, quite hazardous situations that may completely block access to the
computer.
-I thought at the beginning in the last Xorg upgrade, but the problem
remained after downgrading. The same regarding the nvidia drivers (removing,
reinstall).
-Then started to play around in console mode: desinstalled kdm and gdm:
startx loads correctly X with nvidia driver and so does startx
/usr/bin/startkde ... but the sound is lost: Intel HDA audio is only accesible
from root: aplay -l results in not finding file while sudo aplay -l detects
correctly the audio (both in kde and gnome).
-Then I reinstalled kdm: the original problem came back.
-Removed kdm and installed gdm: the system starts correctly now, without any
error and with the sound ok.
-Noticed also that when the nvidia xorg driver loads it displays a fraction
of seconds nvidia's logo: it happens with startx, startx /usr/bin/startkde and
now with gdm... but not with kdm... so it looks like the problem is at some
point between kdm and Xserver.
-Another thing: just after reinstalling kdm, from console: sudo service kdm
start, worked ok (even nvidia logo). But after restarting the computer... back
to the problem, as described.

Best regards

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-11-30 Thread D. Wegener
I started experiencing this today after applying the latest xserver
updates for Karmic (1:7.4+3ubuntu10). If you cancel out of the low
graphic mode dialog quickly enough, kdm will restart and run normally.

The problem results in the following messages in the kdm.log file:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
 at http://wiki.x.org
 for help.

 ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
Warning: Failsafe mode was already attempted within 30 seconds.
Warning: Falling back to gdm to report the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-11-26 Thread toasted_one
I too have this problem, I receive the following error in Xorg.0.log file:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): SLI lock timeout exceeded (type 1)

I am running kernel 2.6.31-15 on Karmic
using kdm
using KDE 4.3.2
using nvidia driver 185.18.36
2xNvidia 9800 GTX cards in SLI configuration

rebooting sometimes fixes it.Seems to have started after the latest
updates ( ~approx Nov 24/2009 ??). Worked perfectly before upgrades as
well!

switched to gdm and several reboots, seems to work fine afterwards.
Switched back to kdm to see what would happen and it worked
intermittently after several reboots but overall still exhibits problem.
Seems like a kdm timing problem??

Switching back to gdm seems to have stabilized it for now.
