Hi Marco, According to the thread in this link, this bug was reintroduced to newer xserver versions. I guess, I should sign up for this bug and tell the developers about your problem. Good luck! I am not an expert either though. I should tell you, if you get an ATI- based machine you should become one :) Other types of architectures can make you think sometimes too. However, most of the issues (on nVidia and Intel) make sense and get resolved pretty quickly. The majority of troubles I and my friends are having due to ATI bad drivers and/or secrecy are not usually fixed. Hello Gene, I've checked both links and yes, it seems similar to mine, specially regarding the error messages in syslog. I've followed a link there to http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7128 where the bug seems to be solved but I can't understand how -- I'm not expert in this topics... Hi Gene, Usually when I boot I've turned off visual effects so I had to turn it on to check your comment. After turning it on it took around 5/10 seconds for Ubuntu to freeze completely. Even the Alt+Sysreq REISUB magic key combination doesn't work... I had to reboot and then check syslog and kern.log. Thanks Marco, It seems you have a different issue. We have different video cards (mine is X200M, yours - Radeon Mobility 7500 ). My freezes happen not right away but over time when windows are being manipulated and only when I boot with the radeon.modeset=1 option. With the next 2.6.32* kernel update I get a locked system with a black screen and no ERROR entries. Hi Marco, I might have a similar issue. Can you please look in the /var/log/kernel* and /var/log/syslog* logs and tell if there are any garbled (non-readable) entries at the time of the crashes. I reported this #489447 bug. My video chip is ATI X200 (rc410) though.
