[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573957] Re: X server crashes randomly
Rytis, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Thank you for your understanding. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573957] Re: X server crashes randomly
This bug also affects 11.10 (Oneiric). Specifically, I get crashes randomly during OpenGL screen savers, when Firefox is opened after a manual logout from KDE (I am running Kubuntu), and occasionally at other times. When this happens, my compositing is disabled automatically, and the crashes become more frequent until I re-enable it. The screen saver crashes tend to happen more often when compositing is enabled. The Firefox crashes seem to happen less often when compositing is enabled (actually, I don't recall Firefox causing crashes at all when compositing is enabled). I believe this install was clean. The Firefox crash is identical to this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1882522, when compositing is disabled. I've attached kdm.log. If any other log files would be useful, let me know and I will include them as well. ** Attachment added: kdm.log https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/573957/+attachment/3183464/+files/kdm.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573957 Title: X server crashes randomly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/573957/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573957] Re: X server crashes randomly
I don't think it is a duplicate. I've never had the crash occur while browsing (though firefox is always open) and don't see a firefox core dump or anything like that. I have intel hardware, not ATI. However, I also cannot find a specific trigger, and it does look like it may be caused by erroneous handling of a null pointer. Uploading the full logfiles from each crash is kinda hopeless as they grow to be rather large. I collect several files after each crash to examine, and the folder of those files is about 700MiB per crash. Unfortunately, I cannot trigger the crash, so getting a full gdb backtrace is going to be difficult. The backtrace I am finding in my Xorg.failsafe.log is: (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument repeated thousands of times (==) FBDEV(0): DPMS enabled (==) RandR enabled snip Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x4a3248] 1: /usr/bin/X (0x40+0x655ad) [0x4655ad] 2: /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x7fd31e80+0xf8f0) [0x7fd31e80f8f0] 3: /usr/bin/X (DamageUnregister+0x53) [0x4d72f3] 4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libshadow.so (shadowRemove+0x33) [0x7fd31b1303c3] 5: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libshadow.so (0x7fd31b12f000+0x1884) [0x7fd31b130884] 6: /usr/bin/X (0x40+0xa77d9) [0x4a77d9] 7: /usr/bin/X (0x40+0x16852c) [0x56852c] 8: /usr/bin/X (0x40+0x2624c) [0x42624c] 9: /lib/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xfd) [0x7fd31d4f8c4d] 10: /usr/bin/X (0x40+0x25d59) [0x425d59] Segmentation fault at address (nil) The kdm log gives this: (note that 'batch' is found once in the file while the others are repeated): ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:957: Error mapping buffer 36087 (pixmap): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 15600 (surface_state): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 15615 (binding_table): Cannot allocate memory . repeated hundreds of times, number after 'buffer' varies ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 16230 (surface_state): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 15863 (binding_table): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 15672 (surface_state): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 16084 (binding_table): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 15820 (binding_table): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 15950 (binding_table): Cannot allocate memory . ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:876: Error mapping buffer 36091 (batch): Cannot allocate memory . I get X crashing on me now everyday. I have lost lots of works because of this. Lucid is suppose to be an LTS(Support/Stable) or am I missing something? The fact that such a critical bug is completely ignored (no one is here to even guide us on how to better debug it, or confirm it, or even asked for more information) does not inspire confidence at all. I feel lots of people having this issue but not many people would think of searching for a bug report for the problem. Its really frustrating when one faces issues like this X randomly crashing without warning. I could be giving a presentation and BOOM! all my works are lost. Seriously Ubuntu can not be taken seriously when critical issues like this are completely ignored. I am not even pissed because the issue is not resolved. I am pissed because from the look of things no one seem to give a heck. -- X server crashes randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I just posted a thread at ubuntuforums.org (before I saw this) in case anyone wants to follow whatever discussion results there: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9300254 (that thread also complains about the hundreds of thousands of lines of output from kmail/kontact and amarok that are needlessly being thrown into xsession-errors, which is probably not relevant to the crashing). $ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 00:03.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset MEI Controller (rev 07) 00:03.3 Serial controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset AMT SOL Redirection (rev 07) 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 03) 00:1a.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 (rev 03) 00:1a.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 (rev 03) 00:1a.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 2 (rev 03) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 4 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev 93) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation ICH9M-E LPC Interface Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation ICH9M/M-E SATA AHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5300 ** Attachment added: .xsession-errors following the described crash http://launchpadlibrarian.net/48464424/xcrash.3 -- X server crashes randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573957] Re: X server crashes randomly
Think I have the same bug. Difference is I'm running Kubuntu. clean install. this is the tail end of Xorg.0.log after i've been logged out (xorg crashed) After that I get a text prompt until i restart the machine. startx will try to start but flashes a few times and fails with the Error setting CPU to domain 3 error shown in 'startx output' both logs tend to point to Xorg so I will also inform them. I'm a user, so apologise if my info isn't up to much yet, but am hopefull i can learn as much as poss through my experiences here ;) thanks, Martin -- X server crashes randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
