gene, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful. I can confirm this on an upgrade of Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04 (it was originally a Kubuntu 10.04 installation, but I added the Ubuntu Desktop also). As far as I know, KMS is still running (as I'm not sure how to disable it), and I have essentially the same dmesg output as the submitter. My lspci reveals 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200M] for my Video Card. I am experiencing bug #550850 (which is also duplicated several times), whose main symptom is garbled screen output followed at some length by a crash in compiz, with the error message Failed to parse relocation -12! in dmesg. There may be a correlation between these two bugs.
